Some Rangers talk
Ah, the joy of Rangers talk out on the interwebs...
Bob Sturm takes a look at Chris Davis's "all-or-nothing" season so far, and compares his current K rate to his historical rate in the majors and minors...
FanGraphs also has an analysis of Davis up, that looks at whether he's going to threaten Mark Reynolds' record for Ks in a season.
David Pinto criticizes a Bill Conlin piece that canonizes Nolan Ryan for making major league pitchers be men and throw lots of pitches, noting that there's a reasonable middle ground between babying pitchers and insisting on 135 pitches per game. He also notes that Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale would probably disagree with the notion that throwing a ton of pitches won't hurt you...

OT: Going to my first game at the RBiA since 96 Saturday vs. A's
Any recommendations of things to see, eat, or do while in the ballpark besides the obvious of watching the game?
I think there is a Casting Crowns concert before the game on the North Lawn. May check that out.
Anything else?
It is a great thing to know the season for speech and the season for silence.

Try a chicago dog
Or the Taco salad with Jalpenos.

My dad
Big fan of the Chicago dogs. Even though he usually ends up watching half the game with mustard in his beard as a result.

I get one every time I go
Along with the garlic fries. The Chicago dog is very messy but damn it’s good.

The other obvious being to stay as far away from Jim Knox as possible.
Forgot to add that.

You can also bring beer in if...
you empty out some Mountain Dew bottles and pour your beer in. They never check it.

Its always a special day
when Sturm takes time off from holding forth on Hockey, English league soccer and tiddly – winks to write about a sport that people actually care about
Julio Borbon
When does he get the call up? Playing pretty well in AAA and we can move Josh to RF
TCU are going to bust through the BCS this season.......

Martin Perez comes in at #11...
…on this weeks Prospect Hot Sheet
Team: low Class A Hickory (South Atlantic)
Age: 18
Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 4 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 Ks
The Scoop: Pitching four shutout innings doesn’t normally qualify a pitcher for the Hot Sheet, but Perez has been sensational on a tight pitch count all year. With a plus fastball and a plus curveball, Perez now has a 2.43 ERA with a 50-14 K-BB mark in 40 2/3 innings, while 65 percent of his outs on balls in play have come on the ground. His arm is loose and his delivery is clean and repeatable, but because of Perez’s youth the Rangers have yet to let him go more than 5 1/3 innings in any of his nine appearances. But even at 18, he already looks like he’s too advanced for low Class A.
That last sentence...
is amazing.
I have to wonder if he will stay in Hickory all year? Not sure I want to see him in Bakersfield this year.

Bump him up to Frisco
See what he can do there.

I wouldnt rush him that quick
he’s only 18, i think you could consider it an aggressive move to send him to high a before the season ends

I've mentioned this before
The Rangers took an aggressive approach with Feliz and let him skip high A altogether. Since Perez is only pitching out of the bullpen, I don’t think its completely out of the question to talk about him skipping high A and pitching for Frisco this year.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Perez is 18 and Feliz was 20 also.
Who knows if they think he’s ready for that big of a spotlight.
Go Rangers...don't suck...

We'll find out just how much they think of his make-up
If he does move up, it definitely says something.

Harry
Anyone know if Harrison was scheduled to throw a bullpen today? Also, by what time do the Rangers have to make a roster move to get Hunter on the roster by 4:05?

Davis won't break Reynolds' record
It has nothing to do with Fangraph’s cute little projection system that says he’ll finish with 195. If he doesn’t cut that K rate, he’ll be spending July and August in AAA.
I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.
Yep.
He’s just way too replaceable as long as he is hanging out at the Mendoza line.

But then
the Rangers will go on a 27 game losing streak because of bad defense at 1B.

Has anyone looked
at our minor leaguers to see if pitch counts are actually up, or if this is one of those media stories that is really a bunch of hot air about nothing?

Look at the way
they’ve handled Perez and others. They’re being very careful. Some of the older guys, like Hunter, have had longer outings lately. I think they’re being pretty smart about it, taking each pitcher as an individual.

Yes
As usual, I think the media is making generalizations without doing a lick of research.
And even Feliz, as an upper-level pitcher who might be more likely to get the “Nolan treatment”, was on a strict pitch count that yanked him in the 4th the other night.

Kiker and Feliz
I think part of that might have been count, but part of it might have been sit down, you need to be more efficient next time.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
i don't see mention
of the middle ground you’re referring to. And this is a completely baseless statement: “It’s also pretty clear that most pitchers not named Nolan Ryan suffered from too much work in the past.”
Man, I love winning! You know? It's like better than losing!
