Harrison to the DL.
The Rangers have officially promoted righthander Tommy Hunter, who will start Game One of today's doubleheader, and to make room on the active roster for Hunter the club has placed lefthander Matt Harrison on the disabled list, retroactive to May 26, with left shoulder inflammation.
Harrison will be eligible for reactivation on June 10.
This was per an email from Jamey.
Looks like we get to put up with Kris Benson for a little while longer!

So...
We’re not allowed to talk about an event happening(and potential future ramifications of said event) that effects the Rangers, if it comes from Newberg’s email? Gotcha.

Benson
After thinking about it a little, I’m fine with keeping Benson around right now.
Assuming that Padilla replaces Hunter on the roster on Tuesday, when you look to the other options on the 40-day roster to replace Benson, the likely candidate is Mendoza. However, do you really want to call Mendoza up to sit around in the bullpen and pitch once a week when a game is out of hand. After all, when is that last time Benson pitched in a situation that actually meant something? In fact, you could say the same thing about Madrigal, who I would probably option back to AAA before cutting Benson so he could actually pitch on a regular basis.
Just keep Benson around as the last guy in the bullpen and use him in meaningless situations. If it ever gets to where you actually need that spot in the bullpen to pitch when it matters, but him then and add someone you trust.

yeah i guess that makes sense
No use in bringing up a youngster to replace him if they are only going to throw 1-2 innings per week, if that. I think they will probably send Hunter back down in between the two games so they can bring up someone to work in long relief if needed.

100 percent agree with this
As much as Benson sucks and has no business being on a big league roster, what really is the benefit for cutting him loose now?
He’s pitched 3 times in the past 3 weeks. If we cut him and replace him with a Mathis or Mendoza, how does that help them at all in terms of development? It’s not like Wash is going to use the last guy in the pen any different than he uses Benson.
I think we should stick with Benson for now and then DFA his ass once Nippert or Eyre are ready to go.

Thank you
It amazes me the ire Benson draws when all he does is pitch in garbage time once a week if that. And the alternative is Doug Mathis or Luis Mendoza. Its not like Benson is keeping Feliz from coming up.

Hunter in game one, May as well post that one as a loss
20 earned runs in 11 innings last year, wow!, anyone have his minor league numbers for this year?

Im gonna chalk last year up to the fact he was rushed to the bigs due to our extremely high number of injuries
He will probably struggle today. In an ideal world he would stay in AAA all year and start every 5th day down there. But since this is the real world he is on the 40 and we need an emergency starter so he gets the call.

so you are
predicting a loss even though you know nothing about how Hunter has pitched this year. You are qualified to write for Crops on the Farm.

Here's my stupid question of the day...
When Padzilla gets back on Tuesday, is it possible that Hunter goes to the bullpen, and Benson gets released?
and
Would it be any difference?

Hunter needs to pitch every 5th day and develop
Benson doesn’t.

is it possible....yes
Will it happen……highly highly doubtful. I think Benson is here until Nippert comes off the DL. Theres no need to make a roster move unless you have to. Mathis has already been DFAd once so adding him now and DFAing him when Nippert gets healthy would mean we lose him. Hunter needs to stay in the minors as much as possible this season only coming up here for emergencies.

Isn't Hunter already on the 40-man?
I don’t think I said anything about Mathis. If Hunter is on the 40, Benson can be released, and Hunter can hold Nippert’s spot until he is ready to come back, then be sent back to OKC. Don’t forget somebody will have to be dropped when Eyre is ready to came back, also. Thinking Eddie G. there.

I don't think its a good idea to have Hunter pitch out of the bullpen
only to go back later and start in the minors. If you want him adjusting to ML hitters, keep him in the bullpen all season. If his problem is still that he needs to develop that change-up, keep him in the rotation in OKC.

Agree
Again, what’s the point of Hunter taking Benson’s spot in the pen as the last guy that gets used in blowouts? Benson has pitched 3 times in the past 3 weeks and only 4 times in over a month and a half. How is Hunter taking over his spot going to help this team and his long term development? Its not like Wash is going to throw him out there more than he has Benson.
The only logical move right now would be to keep Benson and wait for Nippert to get healthy.
by behindthebag on May 29, 2009 3:41 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Like I said
Hunter needs to stay in the minors pitching every 5 days as much as possible this year so keeping him up here for a month or so until Nippert is rerady and pitching once a week for an inning or two isn’t productive IMO.
I would be all for releasing Benson if he was being used like Rupe was last year. But he isn’t. In fact he is hardly ever being used and when he is it is never in close game situations. So I see no need to release him right now. Releasing him isn’t going to make this club any better.
Also is Eyre on the 60 day DL or is he just on the 15 day?
