Just for fun

Here is the thread on the Keith Law / Chris Davis debate.

http://www.lonestarball.com/2009/4/2/819795/klawchat-wow

Fun to look through there to see where people were on Davis before the season. But as ab03 says, no one predicted this cataclysm.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

by JBImaknee on May 29, 2009 7:01 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I am genuinely bummed for the guy.

I wanted this guy to succeed so bad. It’s kinda overshadowed the team record for me a little.

by shroomer on May 29, 2009 7:03 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm disappointed too

I thought he was overrated, but overrated in the I thought he’d be a solid 1b-man who was adequate at defense with nice power and okay offensive numbers. I didn’t think that this would happen. In retrospect, I think that it is somewhat natural that some of that hype may have gone to his head.

And I’m very encouraged by the defensive improvement. It does suggest that if he can improve his hitting approach he’ll be a very valuable player. But he needs to go to AAA and figure this all out. If he stays up here to even come close to break that record, I’m afraid he’ll be scarred for good.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

by JBImaknee on May 29, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's one thing you have to think management has a good handle on

That being his psyche. If they had even an inkling that this was going to break him they would have had to address it…right? I wasn’t worried about him mentally until the past week, and I am slowly moving toward the send him down camp…though I still remain in the keep him up camp for now b.c. of his defense and the lack of internal options.

Just because he has sucked dog nuts this year

doesn’t mean he is a failure.

It just means he has had a rocky stretch, and may be sent to the minors.

Its not a crisis, and it doesn’t mean he is done, just ask Nelson Cruz who sucked in the majors for a couple of years.

"Guillermo Moscoso despite his stunning game yesterday, is not a legit prospect. He is simply too old, too skinny, too weak, and lacks the fastball to make it at the professional level. ." - crops.mlblogs.com

by DJCahill on May 29, 2009 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

but if nelson cruz doesn't bounce back

aren’t we just calling davis another in the line of botts/cruz

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 29, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There is a big difference between Botts and Davis

Namely, Botts (1) couldn’t field, (2) never showed any ability to hit major league pitching, and (3) was significantly older than Davis.

Davis went very fast through the system, it isn’t unreasonable to think that he may need more time in AAA. Lots of guys need more time after they first come up.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

by JBImaknee on May 29, 2009 7:17 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah not the same at all

just saying cruz may have corrected our perception about potential AAAA players

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on May 29, 2009 7:18 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think Davis is a potential AAAA player though

AAAA player kind of implies that they’ve learned everything they need to learn in AAA but still can’t compete at the higher level. I’m not sure Davis has learned all that he needs to learn. Maybe he knows all the basics, but I’m not sure he’s learned to handle the day-to-day ups and downs of higher level professional baseball.

Of course, maybe he will go down there and dominate completely, but then like Botts and Cruz (for a long while), can’t handle the big leagues. Hopefully that isn’t the case.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

by JBImaknee on May 29, 2009 7:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah that's all true

i don’t think of him in that vain at all

by ab03 on May 29, 2009 7:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I do think some people may

which is why they are freaked out about optioning him. They’re afraid that that’ll start the Botts cycle again.

I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

I think he just needs more reps.

It does not seem he has ever got kicked in the nuts in the pros…learning to overcome adversity is a huge part of success, whatever you do in life.
