M's sign Steven Shell
Maybe it is just me, but every time I hear that name, I think of the character Kramer played on Murphy Brown, when he went out to L.A. and got a spot on the show as Murphy's new secretary.
Anyway, we've talked about Shell possibly ending up in Texas, but instead he's been signed to a minor league deal by the Seattle Mariners.
So so much for that.

So tell me again why were people so adament about signing him
He only got a minor league deal after being released by the Nationals. Thats gotta tell you something

Yeah, his game must not be as good as his numbers have looked. He didn’t look amazing, but he looked like a legitimate major leaguer, and some teams, like us, have guys who aren’t legitimate MLBers in our pen.

Shell
I was thinking about him while watching last night’s bullpen debacle.
Given how Feldman has pitched his last couple starts, and with Holland likely to join the rotation in the not to distant future, we should have signed him, given him a week or so in AAA to get a couple outings in, then cut Benson when he comes off the DL and sent Mendoza back down to AAA.
What makes you think Holland joins the rotation anytime soon?
BMac, Harrison, and Feldman are all pitching well which means there isn’t a slot available for him. I think if all three of those contiinue to pitch well we will look to move Padilla at the deadline and then Holland can slide into th spot but thats a ways away
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Harrison is not pitching well
Well, he had 4 good innings in his last start but other than that he’s been horrible. If he doesn’t build on that last start then his spot is certainly in jeopardy.

Agree
But those 4 innings were really really good. IM of the belief he does build on them. And if he doesn’t I think Benson gets his spot before Holland does. I don’t think we see Holland start a game for anything other than emergency situations before the ASB and I am fine with that
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
meh
shouldnt;’ get caught up in 4 innings. there are so many pitchers who have given us 4 innings like that that went on to do nothing.

The talent is there
You don’t knock him out of the rotation any time soon. Even if he never does that again, you still have to give him until June at the earliest to show the Rangers what he has.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
What talent is there?
Harrison’s problem is the lack of plus pitch that he can consistently miss bats with, which causes him to have to nibble all the time, giving him a very small margin of error.
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 2:49 PM CDT up reply actions
He's got a
fastball in the low 90s that he can work up to 94/95, he’s got a good slider, and he’s got a good change-up. I don’t know if they are plus pitches or not, but he’s got great stuff and has it in him to repeat his last start (those 4 great innings).
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Harrison
He has 9 Ks in 22 innings. That’s isn’t going to get it done. Even in those magical 4 innings, he only struck out 2. He’s given up almost half as many HRs as he has Ks. Last year wasn’t significantly different.
He just doesn’t have the stuff necessary to be very good.
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 2:58 PM CDT up reply actions
That isn't going to get it done
That doesn’t mean that he isn’t ever going to improve.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Ks
Well according to Maddux Ks don’t mean much (he didn’t say it in those words but made a point that 3 one pitch ABs was better than striking out the side). Its a nice weapon to have if you need it but I think the Rangers are more working toward a “pitch to contact and let the defense do its thing” type mantra. It allows starters to go deeper into games and lessens the workload on the bullpen.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Not really
Harrison has generally been bad, other than the last few innings of his last start. I would ride with him for another few starts, but you can’t say a guy with a 7.89 ERA and no quality starts for the season is pitching well.
Feldman has pitched fine his two starts, but he’s not a long-term solution. He’s clearly not the kind of guy that will keep Holland out of the rotation for long.
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions
This team can't afford to just kick Feldman out of the rotation
just because we have another top prospect who will need to be put in the rotation. So what if he isn’t part of the long-term solution right now. He’s pitching well and you keep him in the rotation until he proves he can’t.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
What?
So you have a journeyman-type pitcher who is doing okay in the rotation, and that keeps you from replacing him with a top-notch prospect who forces his way into the rotation?
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 2:51 PM CDT up reply actions
Show me when the Rangers have had a starter
that has been as good as Feldman has been so far. Journeyman type pitcher??? He’s 26 years old in his second year as a starter. If Wash trusts him a bit more in games, Feldman would look even better.
How about we also let Derek Holland force his way into the rotation before we kick out a good SP from the rotation. He’s had a few outings as a RP in the Majors and a small handful of starts in AA and AAA. That’s not forcing your way into the rotation. That’s being put into the rotation because of a lack of options. Right now, we still have some good options in the rotation.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
You're kidding, right?
Feldman had an ERA+ of 83 last year. That isn’t good. You can get by with it for a 5th starter, but it isn’t good. It has journeyman-type written all over it.
I’m not saying Holland has forced his way into the rotation yet. But if he does, someone like Scott Feldman shouldn’t be in the way.
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions
He was a solid starter for most of last season
Before he got tired down the stretch after having a huge workload that he’s never had to go through before. His first 2 starts of this season show no reason to kick him out anytime soon.
Why Feldman? Why the 26 year old who has done nothing to lose his spot? trade Padilla or wait for an injury.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Feldman
His pre- and post-All Star break ERAs were both above 5.00 (5.03 and 5.65, respectively). I think this idea that was good until mid-August and September is a myth. His ERA was over 7.00 in July.
He is a useful pitcher. He’s not a guy we need to be counting on for 30+ starts in a season.
by Darrell McKown on May 3, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions
Feldman
As many know I am an unabashed Feldman supporter on here. Last year was his first as a starter and it is my belief that he was simply left out in games too long. The numbers fully support that also. He is not going to put up flashy or Cy Young type numbers but I fully believe he can go out and put up a 4.50-4.75 ERA in ~180 innings over a season. Given his age I think he needs to be given every chance to do that.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Shell
Is there a back story I am missing as to why the Nationals got rid of him? Looking at his numbers from last season and his minor league career I can’t believe a terrible team like that couldn’t use him.

canned 3 relievers after another dysfunctional outing a couple weeks ago. Kinda like what every fan calls for, but they actually did it. Knee-jerk?
"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."
Yeah
It says we are foolish for having a gascan who put up a 8.67 ERA in 63 innings last year in our bullpen, instead of a guy who put up a 2.16 ERA in 50 innings who we could have had for free.

7 last night. If this team ever makes the playoffs again we’re going to have about 40 GDTs. If they advance to the ALCS, no way SBN’s servers handle it. If they get to the WS the entire internet will shut down, if not the entire power grid.

if the rangers made it to the series
most of us owe it to ourselves to buy tickets and go to the game. especially those of us that have jobs and are even remotely close to being able to buy tickets. I could easily convince my wife (to be) that the look I’d give her for the rest of my life for not letting me go would not be worth the $2000 saved (and I don’t even think that is my highest price).

my brain just started freaking out.

Woah.
So many things wrong with that lineup. Trying to showcase Elvis for the national audience I guess.

"So many things" wrong with it?
Besides Elvis being #2? If he moves to #9 everyone moves up a notch and it looks pretty good to me. I guess with Josh out of the lineup Young is the defacto 3 hole hitter and Wash wants either speed or a good bunter in the 2 hole so if Kinsler gets on he can play small-ball

But you didn’t make any kind of coherant point either. You said there were “so many things wrong with this lineup” and then didn’t identify what those things were. It looked like a decent lineup to me and it worked so what more do you want
