The big question...

can we actually go above .500?

Since my replies to Horns keep getting shut down by new threads

Those guys haven’t sucked, but saying that you can make an argument implies that you can make a reasonable argument. There is nothing right now to suggest that anyone but Kinsler should be starting the 2009 AS game at 2B.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Never

Again, Kinsler would get my vote and i think he should be the starting AS game 2B

that said:

.361/.403/.563
.363/.394/.569
.337/.389/.703

im sure we all know the last one is Kinsler…the other 2 are Hill and Cano respectively…those numbers are competitive, especially when you think about the fact that Kinsler is not going to slug .700, im sorry, he just isnt

the point is merely that those guys are having AS seasons too, as is Kinsler

sadly, the one not listed is Pedroia and id be willing to bet that he is the AS 2B

the silly part of this is that we both agree Kinsler should get the votes…i merely understand why others would argue for a different player

and please dont bash fans for voting for other players when our fans will vote for players who have no business getting votes….it is the stupidity of the fan vote at work

by Horns130 on May 4, 2009 12:59 AM CDT up reply actions

kinsler won't slug 700.

sure. are cano and hill going to hit 360 with 570 slugging?

(the answer is no)

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 4, 2009 1:19 AM CDT up reply actions

thats fair

i could argue that Kinsler would regress more with his .700 slugging than they will with their AVG

truth be told, if Kinsler slugs even .600 that would be amazing

by Horns130 on May 4, 2009 1:30 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not bashing fans for voting for whoever

I’m saying that there is no reason Kinsler shouldn’t be starting the AS game. You’re completely forgetting about defense too. Hill is at -.7 and Cano is at .7 while Kinsler is at 3.0 runs above average. When you add in that Kinsler completely dominates them offensively (don’t forget to add SBs too), they aren’t even close. Its like saying Hanley Ramirez had an argument to win the MVP last year. Yeah, he had a great season, but he wasn nowhere near Pujols.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Ian Kinsler All-Star Game Bet

I’m sure as hell not confident enough to put money on it, but if someone wants to bring this post back at some point or something like that, I’ll say: I’ll bet if Kinsler is leading second basemen in RBIs and home runs with a respectable average (which I think he will) by mid-June, he’ll start the All-Star game.

The NY-Boston effect on the All-Star game is real and annoying, but also overblown.

so, i'm reading through sickels' college pitchers draft preview

i think we should draft this guy:

A.J. Morris, RHP, Kansas State
Morris is 10-0, 1.27 with a 74/20 K/BB in 78 innings, this year, with 55 hits allowed. All of his components are excellent for the context, and he has one of the livelier arms among college seniors this year, getting his fastball into the low-90s. His breaking ball and changeup are also solid, and his command has been very steady this spring. He doesn’t have as much leverage as other pitchers and could be a nice bargain pick in the second round range.

I love Eric Nadel’s style. I hope he’s one of those guys who just keeps going as long as he can. I can’t imagine listening to baseball without him. The only bad thing about turning down the TV is that I miss TAG so I don’t do it all the time.

I’ve lived different places and heard more than a few radio baseball guys, and Eric Nadel is far and away the best I’ve ever listened to. He’s not verbose, yet I can completely visualize the game if the TV isn’t on. Also, he loves the Rangers, but he’s not a homer. I wish the Rangers wouldn’t have been such a turd over the years so he’d have had something good to talk about… there’s still time, I guess.

are you asking

Smoak’s presence in our minor league system has affected Davis’ play? I would hope not. He needs to be more confident and focused than that. From what I have read about Davis, this is simply a sophomore slump. He wasn’t a complete hitter last season but his red hot BABIP covered it up. This year has been the opposite, but he will regulate back to being a .260-.280 hitter with 35 HR power…he has shown he can make adjustments throughout his career.

It's been fantastic.

If the season was only a month and he didn’t win the Gold Glove, it would take some extremely awesome evidence I’ve yet to see for me to believe it’s anything but horribly wrong.

And I’m not seeing any reason he can’t keep it up from getting to watch Rangers games. I thought he could be a solidly above-average first baseman, but being the best in baseball I would have bet against.

picking nits

I think I was away from the GDT when this happened so it might have already been covered, but why did andrus bunt to get kinsler over to 2nd?

He’s already established himself as a pretty good opposite field hitter (a couple successful hit and runs) and despite what you might expect from him, he isn’t the best bunter at all (fine bunter but not really close to getting a bunt single). Thoughts? Or is this just too obvious of a Wash f up to discuss?

He really had one of his best games of there

made a couple nice plays turning a DP and a ball up the middle stopped. Plus, he looked very confident up there at the plate against a good pitcher, I really like his approach.

A terrific bunt is still an out.

In a situation where there was no reason to advance someone a single base at the sure expense of an entire out.

So it was certainly not a terrific play.

well they're saying it wasn't a sure out because the 3b was playing back

covering the bunt

It was a good or terrific bunt. The 3rd baseman was back. But, a very swift-footed pitcher covered it. So, Danks made a play many could not.

In fact, he did that twice during the game (only to forget to cover 1st on one play).

“Logistically” you could debate the strategy. But, again, it was almost a hit. And Kinsler didn’t seem comfortable stealing on Danks.

by 3Bagger on May 4, 2009 1:52 AM CDT up reply actions

uh?

It moved Kinsler to 2nd and he scored on Young’s worm burner between 3rd and SS. And don’t give me the “if it hadn’t been for the sac bunt out, they could have had a big inning” story. Yup, just like all the other big innings they had off Danks.

by twinkilling on May 4, 2009 2:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep, Not only is it nitpicking

it’s making false accusations. It put Kinsler into scoring position and without the bunt, he doesn’t score on Young’s bouncer between 3rd and SS. Nothing wrong with adding a tack-on run when you’re ahead 3-0.

Nice game today...

to get back to .500. Pitchers looked pretty good and had no walks. Harrison wasn’t great, but 5 scoreless innings is 5 scoreless innings. No errors in the field and offense looked pretty good.

I would hit mute when Phillips and Morgan were talking a lot of the time. One thing I did hear is when Miller was talking to Morgan about the other players from Morgan’s hometown. Morgan said he knew a couple pitchers were from there too, but couldn’t remember their names. Then at the end of the broadcast Morgan made it a point to mention that Danny Darwin and one other pitcher were the guys from his hometown. Obviously he had to go back and look it up. When Miller called him on it and said “I thought you couldn’t remember” Morgan said “yes I could, you just didn’t give me a chance to say their names.” I found that pretty amusing. Damn do I hate listening to Joe Morgan and Steve Phillips call a game.

dont underrate Harrison's performance tonight

he battled, and pitched like a major league pitcher. He pitched backwards extremely well, mixed his pitches astonishingly well. It was really really cool watching him pitch tonight as i was at the park. He’d dial up his fastball when he had to, reaching 94 and 93 and really varying his changeup and FB extremely effectively… You could make a microcosim out of his night with the Quentin at bat with the bases loaded in the fifith. He battled adversity in that AB, mixed his pitches really well (he almost blew a FB right by him at the 2-2 count b/c CQ was not ready for it) and he got him out on a 3-2 pitch with what looked like a good hard fastball that tied up one of the better hitters in the AL. I have to say, Im now convinced that the kid can pitch i the majors for us and pitch well for a while. I hope he takes his mental approach from tonight into every start the rest of the year.

yea, he really had Quentin off balance

if you saw the cut he took at that 2-2 FB, you could tell he was uncomfortable with the way Harrison was attacking him with all his pitches. Harrison really established his changeup tongiht and that made his fastball that much better.

Not over looking...

what he did at all. I would take 5 scoreless innings from any Rangers starter on any given night. However I think he can still improve. 100 pitches in 5 innings against a ChiSox lineup with no Thome, Dye, AJ, et al. isn’t great. It’s still something for him to build on though. I liked what I saw from him tonight as far as his FB velocity and secondary pitches.

I’m with you. I think he could be a quality ML starter. He’s still young, but I think the stuff is there. I won’t be one of the people wanting him to get pulled from the rotation when he has another bad outing. I’m sure it will happen because he’s still learning, but I think the Rangers need to be patient with him.

All the pitches

I think its a weird number, but it isn’t that disconcerting. Most of his pitches throughout that game were used well. He wasn’t blowing pitches by guys, but he was deceiving them by setting them up with other pitches. It was actually pretty fun to watch.

The hope is that he can become more efficient in doing that, instead of using all 3 balls to set the guys up for a certain pitch for the K, use only 2 balls. Challenge guys with pitchers pitches earlier in the count so as to get some easy outs fast.

I thought it was a stellar outing for him. Ideally, Harrison pitches those same 5 innings with 75 pitches instead of 100. But he’s young and learning.

by JBImaknee on May 3, 2009 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

exactly

he wasnt pitching just to throw, his entire game was really fun to watch b/c every pitch had a purpose. I was so impressed with the way he thought through the game last night.

O'Day, guys.

I have absolutely hated on JD for not being able to snag guys like this from other teams, but he appears to have found a guy who at least has a chance to be a part of a winning team in O’Day. He will never be a late inning guy, but he certainly looks serviceable.

Good teams with smart talent evaluators have the ability to plug holes like this throughout the year. I really, really hope that Daniels and his staff have started developing that knack.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on May 3, 2009 11:25 PM CDT reply actions

the biggest thing

is that he has not yet walked a batter as a Ranger. He did hit a guy, but we’ll let that slide.

I know it is easy to drink the koolaid after a game like this, but i really believe we have the pieces in place to have a solid team this year. Getting Hamilton back and finding a replacement for Guardardo will go a long way in fleshing out this roster, and the idea of having Holland and Feliz (don’t let his final line today fool you, he was solid in today’s start and flashed why he could be dominant in a relief role later this year) pitching in significant games down the stretch doesn’t seem that far-fetched. It would certainly help if Sheets also signed on.

I couldn't figure out why the Mets let him go.

Their bullpen sure isn’t stacked, and he’s played well in his career so far in a smallish sample size. I tried to figure out what I was missing, and now that he’s been good here, it’s getting harder and harder to understand.

Ed Coffin is trying to save his job?

What does that mean and how does that affect me and the NMLR?

Good idea

I’m going to download the prog right now so I can just ban Josey from my life.

Soon, everyone will experience a Josey-free blog.

Seriously

If everyone simply downloaded and installed the script (it already has Josey blocked when you download it), we could end the Josey troll wars once and for all.

I changed mine to a simple phrase; "Josey Wales Blocked"

Hey Josey, now that I don’t have to look at your idiotic ramblings…

Just wanted to tell you that you’re a douchebag. Have a great life, dick.

Didn't see this mentioned above,

though it may have been in the game threads. Seattle’s looooong game today hopefully means a very tired pitching staff tomorrow night. They used 8 pitchers in 15 innings, and only 4.1 IP came from their starter. Make Hernandez and Bedard throw, take some pitches, get to that bullpen.

i doubt we rough up king felix sadly

although we have been hitting good pitching lately. Who knows with this team.

King Felix

has been bat shit loco recently. But if we can get to Halladay, we can probably get to him as well.

halladay that day

wasn’t really felix like. He was throwing lots of really good cutters but ones that were only in the low 90’s range (and seemed to focus on just that one pitch). That stuff is highly effective but it’s not the same as what felix does

initially his post came up

but when i refreshed the block was there

by cmkelly29 on May 4, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

um

it should work better than that. refreshes will take care of it but it should automatically take care of it too. it “cleanses” every 5 seconds so next time, see if it doesn’t work after waiting.

has been working for me so far.

Wouldn't everything be easier if JD did a good job

and the Rangers won?

You wouldn’t have to go thru all this rigamarole to ignore.

halladay

also have 10+ difference between FB/CHG while Felix only has 6-7. Sometimes, it’s not just about velocity, especially with FB hackers like we have.

Ever made that flight to Seattle from DFW?

That’s close to 5 hours.

If the Rangers were wheels up at 1230 tonight, they won’t land at Sea-Tac until close to 530 CST and then they get King Felix.

One thing you're forgetting...

5:30 CST is 3:30 a.m. Pacific time. The game is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. Pacific time, which is 9:10 p.m. CST.

It’s not like they’ll be working on four hours of sleep.

Also, I’m sure Millwood was in Seattle in time to watch tonight’s game in the team hotel.

We seem to hit Felix

decently from my memory. I could be way off, but it seems like matchup-wise, guys like Blalock, Murphy et al. get a decent swing on him if they’re sitting red and get it.

I even remember Whiffy Wilk taking him deep.

I'm most curious to see Seattle play and how they match-up against us.

I also think Wakamatsu is going to have the red-ass to beat Texas (like Washington v. Oakland).

Good news is that Texas is a legit .500 team this year unlike last year.

thats really solid

against a guy like Felix. If we force him out by the 6th, we’ll be sitting pretty for a sweep this series. Its rediculous that we somehow caught Felix and Bedard in thi two game series, really damn stupid how unlucky we have gotten in that regard

Yeah...kinda

We arent that team though…when do we ever work the count and take lots of pitches?

Hopefully he only goes 6 and it is close when he leaves

you at least have to like our chances since we have Millwood on the mound and hes been decent this year…

Time for Felix to take his 1st loss tomorrow

by Horns130 on May 4, 2009 1:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Uh yeah...
Make Hernandez and Bedard throw, take some pitches, get to that bullpen.

That’s kinda the one thing our offense hasn’t been able to do this year. To anyone.

We’ll likely be the tonic for Seattles overworked bullpen the next couple days, not the other way around.

Don't worry; the M's do the same thing on offense

Watch for Felix and Millwood to each have 10-inning complete games.

by Inkara1 on May 4, 2009 3:54 AM CDT up reply actions

And I'd expect lots of first pitch strikes

Seattle will certainly expect the Rangers to try to get to the tired bullpen as quickly as possible.

One more thing re: throws

I loved the play when Chicago scored and Cruz threw home, then Tea fired to first where Kinsler was sneaking around, and very nearly got Lillibridge.

That was heads-up work by both Tea and Kins, and Joe Morgan was super-impressed with Kinsler’s ‘“sneaking around” as he called it. I am no fan of Joe Morgan, but if our players do things like that and cause Morgan to fawn over them and their “old school nature” or how they remind him of himself and Davey Concepcion or whatever, it’s fine by me. I would love nothing more than to hear Joe interject “well, Ian Kinsler would have done X” in a discussion about Pedroia on a Red Sox/Yanks broadcast.

I think that play that you are talking about

CD actually cut the throw from Cruz and fired to first. Doesn’t change the fact that it was a great looking play.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on May 4, 2009 8:46 AM CDT up reply actions

It happened twice

I think Jennings cut the throw off the second time, can’t remember.

Davis both times, IIRC

He failed to pull the trigger on the throw. It looked like he had him, too.

by jasonhh on May 4, 2009 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions

the first it appeared he

looked over to 3B to check the runner. By then it was too late. It appeared in the replay that TT was pissed that CD didn’ t make the throw.
