OK since this is the official postgame thread I pose this question
When do you start looking to lock up Elvis long term?
Since it looks now like he will be a FA after 2014 at the age of 26 when would you look to get cost certainty through his arbitration years and possibly buy out a FA year or two?
As a comparison Jose Reyes inked an extension at the age of 23 during the 2006 season just before he hit arbitration. 4 years 23.5 million with an option for a 5th year.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Why not?
Cost certainty is a huge deal nowadays for teams
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Give at least another year
There are other guys who the Rangers need to lock up first.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Who?
Hamilton? I agree but his should be pretty easy. Hes gonna let you buy FA years out because he won’t be a FA until 33 I believe so this may be his only really big contract he gets.
Elvis is gonna be a FA at 26. The earlier you can lock him up and buy some of those out the better. The closer he gets to FA, even a year into the bigs, the less I think he’ll want to give those away. Become a FA at 26, sign a 5 or 6 years deal and then become a FA again at 31 or 32 years old.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Hamilton I believe will enter FA at the age of 31
So locking him up through the age of 33 or 34 when you can expect a hitter to start showing significant signs of decline isn’t a bad thing. I think you also can start thinking about FX2 since he will be a FA in a couple of years and is his arbitration years.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Nelson Cruz if he keeps on keepin on.
by Black Francis on May 30, 2009 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Is he going to enter FA the same time as Hamilton?
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
No
He only had 1.082 of service time coming into the season so he will be the year after Hamilton.
I still think Cruz will get traded before he hits FA
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't know about extending Cruz then
He’s great and all, but he’s about a year older and will be entering FA a year later. Doesn’t seem worth it.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Yeah
I may try and lock up his arbitration years for cost reasons but thats about it although i don’t know how exactly arbitrators will look at a guy his age(30+ when he gets to arbitration) and his late blooming when they give their decisions
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
You just don't want to go through arbitration with players
Never a good thing for the team.
I’d have no problem locking up his arbitration years and adding a team option year to the end of it.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Of course you don't
But I think Nellie is gonna be a rare case. If he keeps this up he will be in a league just below Ryan Howard in terms of arbitration award. But then you look at his age and that has to factor into it.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

Ypu have to think he'd at least think about it too, right?
Sure he misses out on three potentially lucrative as ass shit years of FA, but he gets financial security for life.
For a 20 year old that has to be a huge consideration.
Here’s how it’d compare to Longoria’s deal:
08:$0.5M, 09:$0.55M, 10:$0.95M, 11:$2M, 12:$4.5M, 13:$6M, 14:$7.5M club option ($3M buyout), 15:$11M club option, 16:$11.5M club option.
Of course since TB smartly Longoria’d Longoria, they were buying out one year less of FA, and they used club options for the FA years, but Evan was a good bit older than Elvis, too.
Still… maybe a little less for Elvis. I dunno.

Less money or less years?
Buying out a kids potential FA years at the age of 26, 27, and 28 isn’t going to be cheap. I would structure it like this:
1.5, 2.5, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7, 7
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
D-Tron just posted Longoria's contract above
47.5 million total (when his options undoubtedly get picked up). Elvis is a great player and his offense is playing much better than anyone thought it would, but he’ll never hit as good as him and won’t be much (if at all) better than him defensively. Your structuring is also pretty wrong. He might get part of his contract as a signing bonus, but he won’t have a salary of 1.5 and 2.5 million in the next 2 years when he would otherwise be making a few hundred thousand. I think if you sign Andrus to a deal now, you look at something structured similar to Longoria’s (and I’m sure other players’ contracts too). If I make an offer to him this offseason, its 5 years and 15 million dollars to take him to FA and then have 2 or 3 team option years on top of that to kick the total contract up to a possible 35ish million dollars. You can even give him generous buyouts (since that isn’t likely to ever be needed) and fill it with some GG award incentives too.
I don’t think Andrus would say no to that deal. He’ll still be able to hit FA right in his prime and gets a guaranteed huge pay day until that time.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Andrus
For one thing Longoria isn’t 20 years old when he came up last year. Age plays a huge factor in this. And you can structure the contract however you want. I would structure it that way because the next couple years we look to have low payrolls anyway and so an extra million or two won’t kill us. And what it does is down the road in 2012 or whatever instead of having Andrus count 10 million against us its only 6 or 7 so theres 4 million you could have to sign someone else.
The options are fine im not concerned about that. But you can’t compare buying out a guys FA years at 28 or 29 to buying out a 26 or 27 year olds FA years.
Thinking as an agent would think a 26 year old can have two more monster contracts. A 5 year one to get to 31 years old then another long term deal at 31. A 28 year old is probably only gonna have one big contract so whether it happens at 28 or 29 or 30 isn’t that big a deal

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If you wouldn't have considered giving him that type of contract in March
Then I think it is pretty stupid to think about it now.
Well
In March he hadn’t played a single ML inning yet so of course I had reservations
I don’t think I have ever said I didn’t want to extend Andrus. I have said I think it was wrong to start him in the majors and lose that extra year of control and that has nothing to do with this discussion.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
You brought it up
I said if you wouldn’t have thought about giving him 8 years for 40 million in spring training, if you would have thought that was crazy in spring training, then 2 months shouldn’t change your mind.
I wasn't really thinking about extending him when he hadn't played a single ML inning yet
I was more concerned with having him under team control for 7 years as opposed to 6. And I did have my doubts as to how he would perform. He has far exceeded my wildest dreams both offensively and defensively so far. And it is readily apparent how his defense and the teams defense has helped this turnaround from last year. So now 2 months into the season I am looking forward to the future and his future with this team.
I doubt anyone thinks about giving a guy who hasn’t played a single ML game yet that kind of money
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

He was called up right after the date to Longoria prospects, then signed it in late April, so there’s only about a two week window in there that he could have played.

Was there rumors of giving him that contract before the season even started?
I ask because I don’t know. I didn’t and don’t follow the Rays that close but I find it hard to imagine people wanted to lock him up to that kind of deal when he hadn’t played a ML game yet.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
If they did thats a very ballsy move
Do you think if he hadn’t come out and had a .950 OPS his first week they would have still done it or at least waited?

As smart as I think it is
For a FA to look at contract lengths like that, it just doesn’t happen much. The closest thing you get is opt-out clauses. A-Rod for instance got that 10 year deal at the age of 25. FAs will look to get as many years and as many dollars as they can at the time they are FAs. They don’t look at what the contract after that could be unless you are looking at somewhat similar dollar values.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
His opt out was at the age of 31
Perfect FA age.
Pujols came up as a 21 year old, signed a huge deal at 23 that allows him to be a FA at 31 (assuming the Cards exercise his option)
Reyes came up at 20, would have been a FA at 26/27 but signed his deal at 23 to make him a FA again at 29 assuming the Mets exercise his option
I can’t think right now of too many more guys who would have been FAs that young to go off of. Most guys don’t become FAs until 28 at the earliest and they usually sell one or two of their FA years early.

So McCarthy
ERA down to 4.35 on the year.
3.54 with his one bad game taken out.
Stay healthy big guy. Stay healthy
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
bigsteve
master of the “one bad game taken out”.
However, McCarthy did look pretty good after that first inning.
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
Just my line of thinking
A guy has been really good 90% of the time the 10% of the time hes bad shouldn’t affect him that much overall in my mind. Is BMac a 3.54 ERA pitcher…probably not. But I also think hes better than 4.35 so its somewhere in the middle ground.
As the season goes on that one bad outing won’t have the same effect it has now and things will even out. Im more suprised people can’t see how bad games skew numbers in small sample sizes and can’t look past them
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
To be fair though
If you take out his worst game, you’ll also have to take out his best game. You can’t have a trimmed mean with only one side trimmed.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
Fair enough
It would be down to 4.21 which is probably a little higher than I see him as but better than his overall numbers now
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Yep
He’s definitely been very good this season. The only thing alarming has been the number of HRs he’s given up, but he’s gone the last 3 games now without giving one up which is something.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
And all the ones he did give up were solo shots I think
Maybe a 2 run shot mixed in with of course that granny. Hes gonna give up flyballs/homeruns which I can live with. He pitches like this the rest of the year and I would venture to guess he has the better year between he and Danks. Wonder what the idiots will say if that happens?
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
What's funny is that by the end of last year,
people were saying that no matter what B-Mac did from that point forward, the trade was always going to clearly be a loss for the Rangers. Now, Danks has a 4.59 ERA on the season and had a pretty poor rookie year too. Its no longer that much of a given that the deal is a clear loss for the Rangers.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.
-The Outlaw
A 4.59 ERA
Isn’t particularly bad. I would still take Danks w/cutter over McCarthy. From what I’ve now seen from the two of them, it may very well be that McCarthy is the better pitcher but you cannot forget about his injury history.
by Black Francis on May 31, 2009 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions

Just got home from the game
First off, we were in our regular season seats up in 332. Tonight’s crowd was ANNOYING! Our section was FULL of kids/teens paying NO attention to the game. My friend Stephen (you know, the guy who’s clearly audible on the TV broadcast when there’s no one there, and also founder of “Statutory Rupe”) was there also. The kids behind him agreed that they were just going to scream the whole time he was yelling “so no one can hear him”. Most of the kids in our section were also making some stupid-ass noise (that my husband assures me is popular at Christian concerts) the ENTIRE TIME.
So, during the 7th ining all of us went to the Grand Slam. Hung around for a while, then in the bottom of the 8th we sat in the lower home run porch. I guess the bullpen guys aren’t used to people cheering the pitchers, because our chant/yell of “Let’s Go-so, Moscoso!” got them ALL to turn around and look.
Awesome game in spite of the crowd.

He struggled with his control in the first,
but then he realized he was pitching against the Oakland Fucking-A’s. ’Nuff said.

he did his job. We had a big lead. He wanted to go back out there, but Wash told him he was done.

He walked the first two batters, allowed a run, hen Maddux chewed his butt
He was phenomenal thereafter.
But after 6 innings, we had an extremely comfortable lead, so there was no real point in running him back out there if we didn’t have to. Let him have an easy outing for once.

Mike Maddux story...
when I sat right behind the bullpen at an A’s game earlier this month, Mike was over near the pen talking to Brandon about his start that day. As I settled into my seats, he was called over by a couple of youngsters asking if they could have a ball. He said they could not…unless they answered a question.
The first kid got: “What is the capital of Arizona?” to which they kid replied excitedly: “PHOENIX!” and was handed a baseball. The next kid drew: “What is the capital of North Dakota?” and the kid, clearly puzzled and likely shamed by not only a big league pitching coach, his friend treasuring his new MLB baseball, but also about to lose a shot at his own ball, says…“well…couldn’t I just answer the Arizona one?”
He got a baseball too.

Yeah i've made the same point in the past
posting it more as an oddity than some ranger defeating logic
the preceding post was a great success.
Since 1998 (TB/AZ expansion year)... there have been 66 MLB division winners...
Here is a scatterplot showing the maximum number of games out of first each one fell. In red are the teams that fell 5.5 out at their lowest. The Angels are moving into thin air as far as being a division winner would go.

That's interesting
If I were using history, I would think that they’d need to get to that 8+ game range for me to say, wow, they don’t have much of a chance of coming back. For where they’re sitting now, quite a few teams have actually made it, and there is plenty of explanation for a slow start, given their injuries and the fact that most of them are or will soon be at least on the field.
by Brett Perryman on May 30, 2009 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions
Injruries
I don’t know how much the injuries actually hurt them though, their sub pitchers did a great job, better than the real ones have since they came back.
the preceding post was a great success.
Agreed on the pitchers
The two guys who I think have really hurt them and who could make a big difference moving forward if they somehow return to their prime level are Vlad and Escobar…Escobar in the pen.

What's the X axis?
Number of teams? Assuming so, I have to agree with Brett ~ the air doesn’t look so rarefied.
Basically.
X axis would just give a number, 1-66 for the teams.
Only 18 of the 66 (27.3%) have come back from 5.5 or more.
Looking at the schedule through the AS Break
We could have the division by then. There is a tough stretch of games coming up where the Rangers can prove themselves to be true WS Contenders instead of just winners of a weak division, but just avoiding sweeps in all these series and we’re still in a great position.
3@NY
3@Bos
4 vs.Tor
3 vs. LAD
After those 13 games, the Rangers have
3 vs. Houston
3@SF
3@Ari
4 vs. LAA
3 vs. TB
4@LAA
4@Sea
The Rangers shouldn’t have much of a problem dominating in that second stretch of 24 games. With 8 vs. LAA and another 4 against Seattle, the Rangers could easily pull ahead enough in the division to never have to look back.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Man, I love winning! You know? It's like better than losing!
Only 27.3% of the division winners...
…have come back from 5.5 or worse.
But true, they are definitely still alive, and their injuries situation has been somewhat uniquely bad.
Yeah
Maybe the most interesting thing about all of this is that, while they’re still okay where they are, lose a few more games in the standings and you are in real trouble. They’d better hope Hunter keeps playing at this level.
by Brett Perryman on May 30, 2009 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions
Yep.
It’s easy to say it’s still just June… but you get to that 8 games out territory and it just gets really hard to recover… and you need a lot of help outside your control.
At +8 I would be feeling really confident.

The standard deviation is 2.67 games, the mean 4.06 games.

I think the idea is that if you tilt the "Hook 'Em Horns" sign vertically
it looks as if you’re drinking tea from a cup using your fifth finger. The “insult” probably moves on from there…? (Not a very politically correct insult in our day and age…)
It goes way back to the very early days of the schools
A&M students typically came from rural, agricultural backgrounds, while the Texas student body was more wealthy and urbane, i.e. those who were most likely to spend their afternoons sipping tea. Thus, they became known as the “teasippers”, alternately referred to as the teasips and the sips.

The way I understand it, the name comes from a conglomeration of your story and mine
The early t.u. student was most likely to be an uppity tea drinker, and the hand signal just confirmed that train of thought.

And after some quick research
I’m full of it: apparently the “Hook ’Em” sign didn’t come about until the 1950s, and “tea-sippers” as an insult toward UT from A&M predates that by at least 20 years.
My bad.
Yeah, the Gig 'Em was the first hand signal in the SWC
And it didn’t come around until the early teens, IIRC. The insult was already in force by the time the hook ’em came around, the hook ’em just propagated the tea-sipping theory.

Good lord am I the only Longhorn here?
The derisive term came from back when A&M was an all male Military School. A lot of their students poor and rural, went on to serve in the military while Texas students were affluent and had far more vocational options. The idea was that Longhorns were momma boys who sipped tea and never had work hard or sacrifice like guys who signed up for the military. The term came about during WWII.
Supposedly A&M students were fighting and dying for their country while Texas students remained home. It’s completely untrue but the slur stuck in College Station.
Im a longhorn fan
Just never really cared what or why aggies called us

did you get it?
have you been into OOTP for a while? I did the demo of 9, and liked it for the most part. It’s really deep, and there were a few annoying things it kept doing to me… but I’m really looking forward to 10, because I haven’t had a good game to play in a while.
I got 9
Its pretty good. Im not a game freak or anything so I don’t know all the nuances of it. I do like the front office aspect and the detail and supposedly v10 is gonna be great.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
The most annoying thing
about 9 when I did the demo of it, was that I tried starting as the Manager of the rookie league team, thinking I could work my way up… but any time the organization would move players up or down, it would reset all of my lineups, rotations and bullpen… it was pretty frustrating. But playing as the GM of the organization was pretty fun because you have control of everything.
Yep

Do they have the choice? Maybe they chose to hit first I don’t know
Or maybe its a bracket thing where the team on top is away
Good question

Suprisingly
According to ESPNU only 10 pitchers have been used. I don’t follow college baseball much but it sounds like they would have adequate reserves if this went a bit longer or if it ended they would have some guys for the game later today

I think there's a phenomenon
when two teams don’t score for several innings and one finally scratches, it seems like the other does an inordinate amount of the time. I bet BC at least threatens here.
Not sure how often that happens, but it does seem to happen a lot
Maybe it has something to do with the winning team just being relieved to finally score a run and thinks they’ve got it won too early.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

UT Game
I ventured out into the hallways late at night and saw some guy who was dressed in Longhorn shoes, Longhorn socks, Longhorn shorts, a Longhorn shirt, and a longhorn cap. I’m sure he Longhorn underwear on, too, and maybe even a cup. He was also carrying a giant UT flag. In passing I said “watched the game huh” and then he talked for 10 minutes out there about it. Dude was absolutely thrilled. I didn’t try to fuck with him or anything but said I hoped that 170 pitch kid didn’t have any professional aspirations. Eventually we got all the way around to Teagarden, but apparently he doesn’t follow them much after they leave UT, because he thinks he’ll be the best hitter in the Universe. Now I think if he got the AB’s, Teagarden may be better than many of you think with the bat, but it’s like that guy thought he was a Piazza with defensive ability.
Anyway, I think that kind of extreme fanaticism is funny.
I hate to think the lengths I'll go when the Rangers finally make the playoffs again.
