That was kind of disappointing. Still 3-1 for the series, though.

Exactly but today they went away from what they did the entire series.
I'm just goofin' new boot goofin'

so, we really haven’t done anything yet (although the angels didn’t suck as much in 2005)

The winning percentage is not as important
as being up 4.5 games on the rest of the division. Last time that happened was 1999. In 2004 they won 89 games but were still chasing 2 teams with better records. This year 89 wins probably means they’re the ones being chased.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
In other words
they don’t have to be better than the 2004, 1999, 1996, TX Rangers. They just have to be better than this year’s very flawed Angels, A’s, and M’s.

you are the winning run
you should be looking for one pitch
if its not that one pitch you should take it

I actually agree with BG
you are questioning a judgement call a Hitter makes in a split second…. 2-0 is exactly the type of count a hitter of Ian’s caliber is looking to swing in no matter what the situation is. Its stupid to start pissing all over that descision, yea, the result sucked ass, but if he had hit a game winning homer on that pitch it was a great choice. Its really stupid to moan over a choice like that, it happens, its baseball.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
except that it, quite clearly, wasnt a good pitch to swing at
2-0 is exactly the type of count a hitter of Ian’s caliber is looking to swing in no matter what the situation is.
also, that statement is foolish when you are losing….if your ahead, sure swing away…but when you are the winning run in a game your job is to get on base
beyond that, when your the leadoff hitter, you should have better plate dicipline. if it was the bottom of the order, thats one thing. but when its one of the teams best players, who should know better (simply from a baseball perspective) its dissapointing
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

but if he had hit a game winning homer on that pitch it was a great choice
thats the point, he’s a leadoff hitter, and if he isnt willing to act like a leadoff hitter instead of swinging for the fences then i dont want him at leadoff. we dont need a leadoff hitter who swings at the fences every AB, we need a leadoff hitter who can work counts and get timely hits, and honestly, thats simply changing your approach at the plate. its a mental approach and one i havent seen much if ever from IK.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
yup was watching the pitch tracker while sitting at the game
and 3 pitches in a row were out of the zone and it didnt matter. we all made a comment about it when it happened out of frustration. he needs to work on his plate discipline or we need to move him further back in the lineup. we really need him to go into his AB’s with the mindset of a leadoff hitter, if he wont do it, he cant be a leadoff hitter.

Its the last game of the season, nothing matters beyond getting this guy out.
Are you telling me you put holland in over frankie?
the preceding post was a great success.
Not the same
careful with the wording.
I wouldn’t “put” him in the game, but I might leave him in if he had been pitching well and there were favorable matchups ahead.
All things being equal, Frankie is better than Holland and the best pitcher on the team. But that is not the crux of this argument.

you are basing that off of what? you’re gut? you are not basing it off of franky’s numbers. not off of holland’s ML numbers. so far, the only reasoning you have gave is holland’s 8th inning. Is that the crux of your argument? Go for it, but are you sure you want to vilify wash because of it?

i didn't intentionally misread
“getting in someone’s ear” can be interpreted in many ways. anyway, as it stands, it wasn’t the reason we loss and i doubt any of his coaches thought it was a bad idea
"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
It wasn't the reason we lost
but it scares me that our manager can “stick to his gut” and potentially not consult with others prior to certain decisions. I don’t know if I would want my manager to make any single decision by himself unless forced to.

So you think wash made a " stupid gut" decision
because he valued his best reliever in a tie game over getting an extra inning out of holland?
look, you can think leaving in holland an inning would be the best way to go, but to think its some terrible decision to go with your best pitcher? come on. at worst its just two decent paths and the one chosen happened to fail because of a random HR.
the preceding post was a great success.
I'd like to hear his reasoning
but my guess it’s because Wash was once told long ago that you are supposed to “use your closer in the closer’s inning, which is the 9th inning.” I doubt it was because he thought Holland didn’t have it after the 8th inning or wouldn’t fare well against those due up in the 9th.

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)
which is not to say that adam's reasoning isn't right
if the game went into extra innings, we might have been mad that we didn’t have frankie.
but for the specific case of the kennedy hr, it was just a flukey thing

Top of the 8th
1. Ryan Sweeney strikes out swinging. One out.
2. Aaron Cunningham grounds out, second baseman Ian Kinsler to first baseman Hank Blalock. Two out.

this is true
i felt he was a little edgy when he went in but as he pitched more he settled down, i dont blame wash for putting in FF but we had just tied the game and should have been looking to go the distance even if it meant extra innings. To me that meant not forcing your hand with your closer, b/c if you didnt score and he got tired, youd need a different closer and that screws up the roles in the BP.
i wouldnt have put FF in in that situation, but i didnt really think it was way off base, i just thought we were in a position where if we went into extra innings we were a lot better off than the A’s(s), so i woulda rolled with Dutch for another inning.
PS: Milly when they pulled him was at 115 pitches, Their pitcher when he walked out the bottom of the inning had thrown 56 pitches. made me pretty sick

"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Well let's hope the Rangers
don’t go in with that mindset but as as fans I think you have to go in with that mindset.
Jeff Zimmerman for President.
If they play well
and are competitive, who cares?
LAA and Seattle have equally difficult roads.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
We lost vs. the Yankees
because we started two young lefties against them, and they crushed every lefty they faced this year. I don’t like starting B-Mac since he’s homer prone, but Feldman and Pads matches up pretty well.
For the redsox, it’s just the red sox. They have their own history of problems
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
Arn't we like 10-30 against them in boston lately?
whatever the stat is its ugly.
the preceding post was a great success.
anyway, even if we ARE as good as both those teams
they are at home and thus would each have the natural edge to win the series. Thinking the rangers will go 2-4 in those series doesn’t mean I dont think we are good.
the preceding post was a great success.
Home/Road
matters less than starting pitchers to me.
Are we really afraid of lester-penny-matsuzaka?
Or even Burnett-Petitte-Sabathia?

"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
nope he's been awful
the rangers made him look great though
do you think that will change just b/c we relocate to NY
that makes sense
by sam in so cal on May 31, 2009 9:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
they’re not going to be as unlucky (caught line drives) and if they take a similar approach, you might see a different result. It wasn’t an easy 6 innings for AJ (Unless he was facing Chris)
That’s the magic of lucky in baseball. You know, the concept that you repeatedly failed to grasp during the Armando Galaragga discussion?
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
You shouldn't be
Burnett hasn’t been awesome this year, his 115, 6 inning performance against us aside.

I'm sure the legions of Rangers faithful in the Bronx will have him back on his heels

The Yankees fans
will probably boo Burnett a lot harder than the Rangers fans did in Arlington.
"Hustle doesn't cost a dime and it looks good." - Pete Rose as Channeled by Marcus Lemon
well i've got more hope for the boston series definitely
1-2 v the yankes and 2-1 v boston is how I’d end up at the 3-3 possibility.
the preceding post was a great success.
1-5
probably more likely
2-4 would be good
by sam in so cal on May 31, 2009 9:08 PM CDT up reply actions
and home/road is a pretty established advantage for whatever reason
Look at how many playoff teams were 500 or worse on the road and +20 at home last year.

we have any advantage
Feldman isn’t pitching in Fenway vs Boston
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

in what sense?
in the sense that you really think this is the best team in the AL, and you expect them to go on the road, beat NY and BOS when NY beat us soundly here.
ok.
by sam in so cal on May 31, 2009 9:11 PM CDT up reply actions
I think Texas goes 4-2
My guess is we beat Burnett and Pettite, and lose the day game to Sabathia
Then we take 2 of 3 in Boston. We miss Beckett – who is good for something like 16 Ks against this team. Unfortunately we miss Wakefield too, who Texas seems to bang up a bit. But he can be frustrating to a hacking lineup like this one.
I have an irrational hatred of Chris Davis because his Ks are way too ugly and irrational liking of Matt Harrison because he's a lefty - deal with it.

The umps squeezed and balked him
As per usual in his first inning. And Oakland also had a couple really weak hits.
