Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Am I alone? Am I the only one who thinks this whole "Get Alex" movement is becoming insane?

If we are going to make him the next criminal who we burn, could someone explain (with substance, Selena) what the charges are? I am no lawyer (although Hindman is) but what sort of prison sentences do we normally give a criminal who is guilty of the following charges?

He is not liked.

He is not clutch.

He is another who used substances when the sport itself didn’t seem to care.

He does not appear to be very good at marriage.

He seems to be dishonest.

He is disingenuous.

Isn’t it true that if Alex had helped the New York Yankees fight off the evil Boston Red Sox and won a few World Series these last several years that he would be another over-celebrated New York Yankee that is carried about on shoulders? But, because all he has done has not been enough to pull the Yankees out of their annual October gags, and because he stands next to Mr Icon himself, and because he makes an absurd amount of money, he has slowly become the favorite target of the "style over substance" media and blogosphere?

Bob Sturm, on feeling sympathy for ARod. And I know, it is shocking that the longest FanShot quote ever is coming from Sturm...

In a lot of ways people say that he brings it on himself, and it’s true, he has the first and second largest contracts in baseball history and has done nothing but be the best player for many years – just not in October. Anyways, asking Alex to be more congenial or less of a disingenuous creep is like people suggesting that Michael Jackson stop acting like such a freak. He is who he is, so does he bring it on himself? Or does he just make an extremely poor sparring partner with the media? Especially media as vicious as the local NYC daily papers?

by FuturePants on May 5, 2009 12:52 PM CDT up reply actions

not in october?

alex rodriguez has had 2 bad postseason series – ’05 first round against LAA and ’06 first round against detroit. ignoring those 29 at bats, his post season numbers are virtually identical to his monstrous regular season numbers.

i know you cant just throw out all of the outliers, but to me this just shows how overblown his supposed postseason failures are.

His October "shortcomings" have been...

…way overblown.

I have no objection to man walking on the moon.

by Chad Crudup on May 5, 2009 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions

I thought he sucked in the great collapse of '04

vs. Boston. He posted some numbers in the 19-8 blowout, then went 2-17 in the final 4 w/ the infamous slap at first. Sheffield was even worse, but nobody cares about him.

"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."

by scoop16 on May 5, 2009 2:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Overblown, sure, but do they live up to his contract?

No, and that’s the point. Has he performed fine in October? Sure. Has he performed like the highest paid player in October? Far from it. That’s kind of the point, if I understand correctly.

by FuturePants on May 5, 2009 2:29 PM CDT up reply actions

same as regular season

id say a guy that posts top 10 all time numbers in the regular season and basiscally duplicates those in the post season, outside of what amounts 9 consecutive games, is performing like the highest paid player in the game. unless you expect him to actually improve on his ridiculous regular season numbers.

Not saying it’s right or wrong, I’m just saying that is what local media seems to be saying.

by FuturePants on May 6, 2009 3:23 PM CDT up reply actions

my own personal outrage

is based on the info that Arod tipped pitches to opposing batters in blowouts hoping to get the same treatment in future games. thats flat out cheating. there are hundreds of fellas who took PED’s and ive read stories of MLB itself promoting their use to MLBPA at points, but to sell out your teammates for hopes of padding his numbers by cheating to that level, is unforgiveable. For that, as commish, i would think about banning him for life. It betrays the integrity of sport to a level that is unacceptable even beyond the impact of the black sox and pete rose’s gambling.

Sure, fine

IF you can prove it. Confidential sources speaking in the dark mean nothing to me. Before Arod is tarred and feathered for something like pitch tipping it needs to be investigated and proved by people going on the record. Innuendo sells books, but it wouldn’t get my vote on a jury.

He said that he heard someone else say that they thought he might be... How is that

proving anything?

there is just so little of a logical reason for him to do that that i’d be truelly blown away if it was true. The mechanics of doing something like is just not very likely. Add to that, Arod was calling the pitches and doing other things to help call a game that Im sure that some of the other players on the team didnt know what was going on and took it as that.

I don't know if I believe that ARod tipped pitches?

This is afterall coming from the leader of the Duke Lacrosse Witchhunt.

However, if it is true, its worse than PEDs to me, also. Then again, as some folks know, I really don’t give a shit about PEDs in sports.

Tipping

is a time honored tradition in MLB.

There are many cases noted throughout history. As Neyer notes, most of them are considered cute and fuzzy stories. When they’re Arod tipping it’s of course considered to the most offensive act imaginable.

Neyer on Pitch Tipping

Not sure if you’ll see my response two days later…

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/sweetspot/0-1-152/Suspend-A-Rod-for-this—too-.html

“the oral histories are loaded with examples of pitch-tipping. … Usually it’s a favor to the batter — to get him out of a slump, or help him hit his 500th home run, or whatever — with no expected reciprocation. … And when it’s an old story, everyone smiles and laughs and finds it all just so amusing. When it’s Alex Rodriguez, we ask the Commissioner what’s going to be done about it. I actually lean toward doing something about it — again, if you can prove it — but once again I’m struck by the double-standard.”

i find that whole story to be pretty hard to swallow. basically, we are supposed to believe that A-Rod is the ring leader in some intricate conspiracy in which other teams’ players are stabbing their own teammates in the back just to help out A-Rod in return for a promise to return the favor. and of course, he is the only one catching any heat for it. if anything like this is going on, it would be huge, and i dont see how you can put all the blame on A-Rod for something that has to involve several players.

What I'm wondering

We are now seeing a pretty large group of people start coming out to “defend” A-Rod. They aren’t really defending him, but more putting this whole thing in context and pointing out how little of what is said is proven or important. The question I have is how much of this reaches the mainstream. Is it just going to be restricted to the blogosphere group of fans or will we eventually see the rest of baseball fans out there realize how shady this book is and how full of insignificant garbage it is. There is nothing I’d like to see more now then to have Selena Roberts trashed publicly for printing such crap time and time again.

by tricer on May 5, 2009 1:34 PM CDT reply actions

The sympathy isn't from that

Its from having a bitch like Selena Roberts use the NY media to write a book filled with inaccuracies and unproven statements presented as facts that completely trashes a guy for being unlikeable. How would you feel if you have had someone who shouldn’t even write for a tabloid paper write about every single imperfect detail of your life and then adding a couple of hundred pages that says you punt babies.

Remember the Duke lacrosse team? I kept up with that story, saw some questionable reporting and even more questionable actions by the DA. Then what happens. The case gets dropped when its proved that the whole thing is BS. The DA eventually gets disbarred. What does Selena Roberts do after that? She goes on a tirade against A-Rod. gone out of his way?

really? he is intentionally being unlikeable? i guess you could say that about signing those contracts, but thats a reach at best

by Fireal20 on May 5, 2009 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

examples of Bitch Tits being unlikable

the comment he made about not signing the contract with Texas if he would have known he was going to be playing with 24 kids,

the comments about only using steroids while he was a Ranger,

the announcement in the middle of the World Series that he was opting out of his contract,

Plus the fact that nobody in baseball (except our own FOTF) will defend him.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on May 5, 2009 2:17 PM CDT up reply actions

meh

i thought the 24 kids thing was somewhat defensible. with the obvious caveat of not being privvy to the actual conversations and only relying on his story, tom hicks promised rodriguez that he would spend the money necessary to put a winning team around him. did that happen? they gave chan ho a massive contract, but they had guys like herb freakin perry playing 132 games at 3B. rodriguez was just saying that he never would have signed the contract had he thought hicks wouldnt live up to his promise. while its pretty douchey to say that, i dont really have a problem with him thinking it.

how is it unlikeable that he said he only used roids as a ranger? aside the fact that youre a ranger fan, whats the problem?

kinda funny to put the contract announcement on him when you consider who his agent is.

so being not liked means he is intentionally being unlikeable? i think the guy is just hard to like, but i dont think its on purpose

by Fireal20 on May 5, 2009 3:10 PM CDT up reply actions

The guy came to TX purely as a mercenary yet portrayed himself as a wonderful benefactor for the area, the local kids, and the franchise. When things cratered he put as much distance as he could between himself and the franchise. He attempted to minimize his cheating by saying “It was only in TX”. His intent was that it was OK to cheat in TX because the place was a backwater and not relevant like the hallowed yankees.

I don’t and won’t tire of seeing this guy get his just desserts.
