14-12
Hell of a performance by Vicente Padilla.
4 in a row. Half a game out of first place.
I'll have some thoughts about the bullpen situation later on tonight, but for now, let's just enjoy this.

Scoring question
so, in the 8th inning (I think) when Young was on 2nd and Jones hit a single, then Young was thrown out at the plate…..does that count as a one left on base?
Also, is it 120 degrees in the duggout? Vicente’s hair always looks like he just climbed out of a sauna….

Starters ERA of late
Since this stretch of 20 days without a day off started April 21st in Toronto our starters have an ERA of 4.10 over 85.2 IP (including today)
Thats damn nice
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Mike Maddux for MVP!

My measuring stick
goes all the way back to Apr11 and the Greinke-Millwood showdown. That was the day after the Royals torched the Rangers for 12 runs. Since then, 16 games, the Rangers have given up 4.44 runs/gm. Keep that up and they will win the AL West!
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
That was april 18th
And including that game and the next game the starters ERA since April 18th is 4.15
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Great win!
Now, about the BP useage—Wash is like a LL coach who pitches the same kid every game until his arm falls off mid-pitch. Frqankie and O’Day may not be able to comb their hair by July.

Holland
They have a plan regarding how they want to use him and I doubt they had any intention of wasting him for an inning.
Their plan is to pitch him in situations he can succeed right?
Closing out a game with a 6 run lead is a pretty good chance to succeed IMO. Plus he hasn’t pitched in 3 days so an inning won’t hurt him. Now you are at 4 days rest and are gonna feel forced to use him sometime in the next couple days. What if Feldman is at 80 pitches thru 6 innings tomorrow and pitching well? DO you pull him simply to get Holland innings?

OK
So like I said are we going to start pulling starters early just so Holland can get his innings?
Millwood was under 90 pitches into the 7th yesterday, Padilla under 90 into the 8th today, Feldman under 70 into the 6th his last start. Our guys lately aren’t using alot of pitches and are doing really well. So unless you want Holland to sit and wait for a blowout you are going to have to pull someone who shouldn’t be pulled just for a 23 year old rookie. I don’t think thats the right thing to do.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
At 7-1 going into the bottom of the 10th, the Rangers had a 100% WE
They had plenty of options.
6 run lead
If you can’t trust Mendoza and Eddie there, then there is absolutely NO reason for them to be on the roster.
Definiton of insanity-doing the same thing and expecting different results
"Introducing your 2009 Texas Rangers-Built for Insanity!"
I don't know if you saw it, but there was a decent explanation
he had gotten up to throw 3 times already, and it very possibly was enough to eliminate him for tomorrow anyway.. so to lock down the game they just pitched him anyway.
given the situation they probably could have waited to get him warming until they had a lead, but oh well.. not that huge of a deal. most of his outings have been very low counts.
we will just have to blow out the A’s tomorrow.
the preceding post was a great success.
CJ could get another shot to close!
At least for a game. If he was going to face at least 2 lefties in the first 3 I’d say roll with it if the situation was right. That or give Holland a shot to nail down the last couple of innings.
But yes, blowout preferred.
Saw it and agree
But think past tomorrow-into Aug and Sept-and it would be nice if FF has something left.

do you really think
That’ll he’ll be ready by then and he’ll be with us? Or just wishful thinking?
I'm just goofin' new boot goofin'
wishful
I have no idea when he will be ready.
But I do think the rangers will have a decent shot at signing him when he is ready. I don’t think getting surgery is going to make all the teams scared off by his health feel better. The guy literally agreed to sign here in the offseason..
Of course if some team that had earlier declined has some hurt pitchers and is in the playoff race maybe they would jump in and steal him. But if he does get healthy, its certainly possible.
the preceding post was a great success.
here's the thing:
if he’s not ready until September, but we sign him right after the draft, to a 2 year deal with a 3rd year option or something like that, and he comes back in September and helps us during a playoff run, that alone is worth it. but if you get that 2nd year and a 3rd option, that’s the real beauty of it all

A theory i have,
do you think that playing all these great pitchers made our hitters really bare down on their at bats and get more out of them than they were earlier in the year? Yea, we still struck out alot, but that happens against these types of pitchers, but i feel like we were patient and didnt miss many pitches that were hittable… Also, I wonder if we will go back to our hacking ways after this, but im hoping this stretch of games taught our hitters something.

it seems that the Mariners need to decide by a certain time before the game whether the roof is open or closed. The fact that it was opened during play in the top of the first, creating a shadow (however briefly), is unacceptable. Then the fans basically get screwed over later in the game when it starts raining hard on them – do you really plan on bringing a poncho or umbrella to a stadium with a retractable roof?

byrd hit 2nd on friday
vizquel hit 2nd on saturday
andrus hit 2nd on sun, mon, tues
so that’s 3 for andrus. 4 for shortstops, 5 for NOT mike young
Omar Vizquel: your starting shortstop for the 2009 AL all-star team.
Thank you sir
looks like MY may be keeping that 3rd spot. Man when Hammy gets back there will be some decisions by Wash.

Bench Hamilton?
heh, kidding of course
im not sure i agree with keeping Elvis in the 2 hole when he comes back because then everyone moves down 1
Cruz hits 7th, CD 8th, and Salty 9…
im just not sure that is right
either way im fine with it, this lineup can move around and it is still plenty effective
Man that would be interesting
It seems they keep using Blalock to showcase him right now.

i really really think it will go back to MY 2nd when hammy comes back.
Wash said he thinks MY is most comfortable 2nd and hamilton third, and he likes blalock enough to be fine with him cruz.
andrus is doing ok offensively, but not so well that he demands to be early in the lineup or anything.
the preceding post was a great success.
damn right
maybe another year or two.

Do we use him as long relief?

We haven't needed a long relief guy in about a week
I’m still amazed how this starting 5 is pitching right now.

Just got done watching the whole game on MLB.tv
Wow what a great, great game.
What’s impressed me the most is the confidence that is evident now in the infield defense. MY is still getting used to third, but these guys very sure of themselves right now. They’re smooth, and making it look effortless at times.

Weird schedule.
Two two-game series on the coast, then fly to Chicago for a Harrison-Danks rematch.
So, tomorrow, the Rangers have Feldman-Holland with Benson, Jennings, and CJ in the pen. There’s a good chance they should be able to give frankfrankkkkkk a rest for a day or two and have him primed for the White Sox series.

I'm kinda mad that I had to work throughout the entire game
It looks like it had a little of everything we could want… Padilla (!!!!!) going eight innings and a Salty salami.
The Rangers could very well be in first place in the division during May… when’s the last time they’ve been in first in May or later?
No reason to be mad as long as we win
Taking two in Seattle has to make every one of ecstatic right now. It was actually a pretty slow game. Bedard and Padzilla both worked quick. Before you knew it, it was 1-1 in the 9th inning. Then Salty opened it up. O’Day got hit for a few, then came in FX2 to save the day. Overall we’re only .5 back.

So at this point is it
really worth having Eddie in the bullpen over Mendoza, I mean aren’t they 1a and 1b, and one of them we have to figure out what he has going forward because he is out of options following this season
Benson just brought up, Mendoza back down
Now what happens to Eddie?

Line-ups
I was interested in the batting order discussion, so I thought I’d take a purely objective angle and go to Baseball Musings and see what they’d say.
The usual caveats, of course: batting orders don’t make a huge difference, this doesn’t included splitting up lefties, base running, protection or other tiny but still worth pondering issues, and I’m also not sure when a sample size in the regular season becomes large enough to tinker with the batting order you wanted in spring.
Also, this has Andruw against righties, Murph against lefties and Byrd on the bench just because (this does not reflect my personal desires). This is using 2009 stats thusfar. It ignores having a batting order built on splits (something I personally like but very teams use) other than the change in left fielder.
Lefties
1) AJ
2) MY
3) Salty
4) Kinz
5) Cruz Missile
6) Bank
7) Crush
8) Hammy
9) Elvis
(6.3 RPG)
Righties
1) MY
2) Kinz
3) Elvis
4) Bank
5) Cruz Missile
6) Crush
7) Salty
8) Hammy
9) Murph
(5.4 RPG)
Murphy
He has about an average OBP (though in Arlington is pretty below average) with awful-ass slugging. That amuses me.
What doesn’t amuse me is that he makes the offense almost a full run different PER GAME than Jones right now.
So Cruz batting 5th on both
What does RW see that they/we don’t. This seems to be a Crush Davis 2.0 from last year.

by lost in space on May 5, 2009 10:21 PM CDT up reply actions
that explains why i think those are the dumbest things ever created
MY/AJ leadoff
Elvis 3rd, Salty 3rd against lefties…
those things are worthless
Also, I believe I said I didn't put in lefty/righty splits.
It ignores having a batting order built on splits
As far as Jones and MY leading off, I'm not sure what on earth your issue with that is.
Like, even from a face-value glance, that makes a ton of sense. Since, you know, this is based on 2009 stats thusfar, as I said. Young is third in OBP and AJ is first. So. . .
As far as what I'd personally like to see. . .
Kept my opinion out of the initial post for a reason, but for whatever it’s worth, not thinking about handedness and acknowledging lineups are mostly unimportant and that I don’t have intimate knowledge of if or where hitters are actually going to hit better because of the pitches they get or whatever. . . here’s roughly the every day lineup I’d be happy seeing.
2B Kinsler
DH/LF Jones
LF/DH Hamilton
RF Cruz
3B Young
CF Byrd
1B/DH Davis/Blalock*
SS Andrus
C Salty
*Get Davis enough ABs to try and break out of his slump and Blalock enough ABs to try and help us win ‘cuz, y’know, he’s hitting better.
You would put MY at 5th?
I like the line up. I may switch MY for Jones though, other than that, I could definitely live with that everyday.
"So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?"
by lost in space on May 5, 2009 10:35 PM CDT up reply actions
Yes, statistically, you're best off with your 4th or 5th best hitter batting 5th.
Leaning towards someone with very good contact rates. Jones may fall a part, but for now, I’d want him 1st or second, I want Cruz 4th, and that would make MY a perfect choice for a five hitter.
I put Hamilton third mostly as a matter of trust.
Funny to think
we would be ok with the guy that hit the grand slam today as our #9. It makes sense though with the power that we have.

Does this help?
Player G GS W L SV BS HLD CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP BAA
Kris Benson 2 2 1 1 0 0 0 0 0 11.0 16 12 11 3 5 5 9.00 1.91 .333
Eddie Guardado 10 0 0 1 0 0 1 0 0 5.1 12 6 6 2 3 2 10.13 2.81 .429
Also, three-fifths of our rotation has ERAs in the 6-7 range, and the alternative is that first guy. Also, the main guys we might have hoped would be able to help the pen appreciably, Diamond, Strop and Moscoso, have these numbers:
Player W L ERA G GS CG SV IP H R ER HR BB SO
Thomas Diamond 1 0 6.55 6 1 0 0 11.0 12 8 8 1 7 8 (and injured)
Pedro Strop 1 1 10.61 8 0 0 1 9.1 12 11 11 2 4 10
Guillermo Moscoso 1 1 5.50 5 3 0 0 18.0 22 11 11 0 7 10 (AA)

I gotta say it....
Even though I know Adam and the vast majority here will disagree…. Marlon Byrd has to be mentioned when talking about the success of the team this year.
I am being lazy here, and not looking at the numbers, but I LOVE the energy he brings. Lets just call it the Darin Erstad/David Eckstein factor. I am sure everyone can agree how important that is to any winning team. They should create another line in the box score that tracks things just like this…..
In all seriousness though, with the recent A-Rod pitch calling witch hunt in full force, I really cannot discount what having a good character guy can do for a team. Even if his hustle and passion do not affect the standings at the end of the year (I think it will…), he certainly makes it more enjoyable to root for the Rangers.
He is the real Bird-man, screw that chump from Denver….
"Shut the F*** up Lloyd!!"- Superagent Mr. Gold
I don't think Adam...
would agree with your reasoning, but, he’s been a huge Byrd backer for a while now.
