This is weird. The Rangers are normally 8 or 9 games below .500 before they rip off a 5 game winning streak.

It could be a picture of a guy eating a turd sandwich without a subject line and it wouldn’t matter.

that said, some of you are being incredibly unfair to Wash
a great many of you said the bullpen is all Maddux but when its a decision you dislike it is suddenly wash…
ill say this, they all have info that we dont have, so who knows what all was going on
i still agree that it shouldve just been Holland pitching in the 9th….however, i know for a fact this entire board would be saying how stupid wash is if we did that and Holland blew it
the simple truth is that wash will never win with a lot of you

I'll admit I was worried when I checked on my phone and saw Fx2 was in to close
I’m sure glad he saved it though. It’s nice to win one of those 3-2 games Washington was talking about. So now the Rangers are in first place and the Angels (who are the team to worry about) not only fell further behind, but got their asses beat bigtime.
So now… is Fx2 definitely unavailable tomorrow?
Also… the Rangers are now on pace to give up only 882 runs this season.

He has been
a detriment to the team this year. A 660 OPS middle of the lineup presence who is hacking at everything being thrown isn’t exactly a plus.
Eventually he’ll get it rolling, but thank God they didn’t keep plugging him in every night while injured. I’ve always hated seeing the starter “play through pain” and hanging a 600 OPS when there are decent bench options.

great to feel like a 1st place team but
what’s up with FF walking the leadoff tying run in the 9th? Surely if BGL did this people would be calling for his head right now. FF is being overworked but this is the same 9th inning drama that drew such vitriol for CJ last year.

Is it?
Yes there is the caveat that Frankie has been overused lately but he makes a point. Peoples biggest gripe with CJ is they feel he walks too many people and doesn’t have enough 1-2-3 innings.

You must not remember how good CJ was to start last year then
His first 16 games he allowed a runner to score in two of them. He allowed a baserunner in 7 of those first 16 games. Frankie has allowed a runner in 7 of his first 14 games this season.
Its hard to know when exactly CJ started feeling pain which led eventually to his season being shut down but there is no denying that CJ was pretty damn good at the start of last year.

The difference is
its a rare occurance for FF. For CJ, it was damn near every night.
FF has gotten through half his appearances without a baserunner.
The last two months for CJ, he allowed baserunners in 21 of his last 26 games. CJ is still basicly on that path this year allowing baserunners in 3/4 of his appearances.
FF has simply shut down a lot more of the situations he shows up in.

I haven't said CJ sucks
However, I don’t think he has been as consistent as FF has been.

This year no doubt
I was more comparing them as closers to start the last two years.
If you want to go compare them as setup men through their first 14 games the last couple years in 2008 Frankie had alot of trouble with walks. 13 in a little over 18 innings while this year CJ has 6 in 12 innings. Frankie also gave up 17 hits in those first 18+ innings while CJ has given up 14 in his 12 innings so far this year. The biggest difference is in ERA where Frankie was at a 2.95 last year while CJ is at a 5.25 this year. Of course take out the Detroit debacle and hes a 3.08 which again looks very similar to Frankie last year as a setup man

I'm not really sure what the point of this argument is.
by octoberty on May 7, 2009 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
Mainly because you called a legit comment stupid
About how if CJ had walked the leadoff man people would be on here wanting his head but because it was Frankie its ok because there is this belief that he does this stuff much less than CJ did as closer. In actuality as closers through the first 14 games of the last two seasons both have been very similar.
When compared as setup men over the last two seasons they are also very similar.
Yet Frankie doesn’t get 10% of the criticism or complaints that CJ gets on here and people try and justify it by saying its his performance that they are criticizing.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

But CJ Wilson was the closer more than just 14 games?
And Frankie has improved since the start of last season?
And CJ Wilson is healthy, but pitching just like he was when injured?
Frankie hasn’t allowed a run in how many innings now?
IT is the performance. You crop CJ’s numbers to make them look good… take out his worst outing this year, and forget all his bad outings last year… otherwise they’ve been pretty similar.
I don’t understand how you can’t see the difference.
by octoberty on May 7, 2009 8:45 AM CDT up reply actions 3 recs
he sure was the closer more than 14 games
Its just easier to compare similar sample sizes. Its hard to look at his numbers from last year clearly wihtout knowing when exactly he started experiencing pain which I believe directly led to him struggling.
Im not cropping any numbers to make someone look good. Pointing out how one bad game inflates a relievers numbers so early in the season isn’t cropping its stating a fact.
I hope Frankie doesn’t go the way CJ went last year and start struggling. And just like so many of you don’t come on here today and blast Frankie for walking the leadoff man I don’t do so when CJ does it.

He certainly has had decent stretches before.
hopefully he has a strong streak. God knows this bullpen needs guys to step up. He was fairly poor in mid to late April though.
If he pitches as well as he has before, and FX2 can keep pitching well, and the starters can go 6, that could cover a lot of weakness in the bullpen.

I also don't think
its a coincidence that CJ has pitched better since RWash has chucked that 8th inning guy role for CJ.
