not the same

standings are listed everywhere, and i will concur that it’s great to see texas atop the standings.

i can assure you that seattle fans aren’t having a wet toast party today because they are (wherever they are) in the wild card standings – despite a great turnaround similar to texas’.

Wish list for May

- Hamilton comes back healthy and goes on a tear
- Jennings pitches on back to back days and provides the team with more flexibility in the 7th and 8th
- Benson acclimates to a long relief role and stays healthy long enough to give minor league guys time to grow
- McCarthy keeps trending upward
- Kinsler hits on the road as well as at home (mvp talk if that happens)
- Davis gets going
- I win the lottery
- no one starts yet another Rangers blog and posts about it here (probably the least likely on this list to come true)

by Josey Wales on May 7, 2009 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps

though, if my wishes for Jennings and Benson both come true the pen looks alright for now. Then the only weak link would be Guardado, and I expect them to try Murray soon if he doesn’t turn it around. I don’t expect O’Day to keep this up all season, but he might keep it up long enough that some of the minor league guys are more ready to step in.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on May 7, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm sorry, Tball

Benson & Guardado suck and need to be replaced.

If somebody in the rotation goes down with an injury, Holland moves up.

We need somebody who will be able to be the bridge that Holland currently is when Holland moves up and that ain’t Benson or Guardado.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on May 7, 2009 11:24 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not disagreeing with you at all

The team is one injury away from really hurting in the depth department. But I made a wish list, not a “I expect to see these things happen” list. I’m more optimistic about Benson than Guardado right now, but that’s not saying much. But if the team can win like this when Hamilton, Blalock and Davis aren’t doing much, than they may be able to stay around .500 even if the pitching takes a likely step back when those guys get going again. I don’t expect the defense to suddenly suck, that improvement is real.

speaking of the Ms
The Mariners do not have any 2010 options. Instead, they’re looking at the completion of the Adrian Beltre, Jarrod Washburn, Miguel Batista, and Erik Bedard contracts after ‘09 (among others). Those four represent $40MM coming off the books. However, it’s also 40% of the starting rotation and the starting third baseman.

They are going to have plenty of $$ to spend on FAs. But next year’s FA pool isn’t exactly very deep.

Yeah

I don’t think that you can understate how much the M’s want the Nats to pass on Stephen Strasburg. They have the money. They have the near term (1-2 years away) opening in their rotation…

At the same time, Strasburg probably desperately wants the Nats to pass, because he knows the M’s have all that money and need pitching. I suspect he could milk the M’s for $10 million more than he could the Nats.

I wish he could fall to the Rangers

But I know that’s impossible. Why is it that no matter how bad the Rangers are, the best pitchers are always out of reach in the draft?

I propose a 5-year moratorium on trading any young Ranger pitchers who throw over 90 mph.

by Ajax68 on May 7, 2009 12:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Because the Rangers are never that bad

From our bubble, we see some awful Ranger teams, but the Rangers are rarely the worst team in the league, or anywhere close. Living in San Diego, I get to see what a truly awful club is most years. The Rangers are frustratingly volatile, but with an offense always in the top tier, they’re going to always have 70 or so wins, even in the worst seasons.

by JBImaknee on May 7, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

You are correct

This is why the Rangers have to build through trades for the most part. Rarely will the Rangers ever get a top 5 pick. This is why crappy teams can pass us because they get one of the top 5 picks year in and year out see TB.
