Manny Ramirez suspended for PEDs - 50 games
He's blaming it on medication from a doctor:
http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-manny-ramirez8-2009may08,0,6324894.story
Is anyone surprised? He probably tested positive for pot, crack and horse tranquilizers as well.
So, who's going to be the next one outed?

I know he earned another huge payday
But still.. you’d think these active Hall of Famers wouldn’t press their luck with more steroids with everything that has happened.
It reflects much worse to me to still be doing it now than to have been doing it when virtually all the power hitters probably were and the league looked the other way. And I’m sure there are plenty who still are.

I was actually talking
about late 2004 early 2005, when he was throwing up 500, 600 and 700 OPSes.
A lot of players seem to look fairly lost when coming off roids, and I’ve heard its because it takes awhile for the body to get used to making testorone without artificial aid.

Has just FedEx’d a bottle of Cristal and a new Ferrari to Manny.
Seriously, all of the crap going around about A-Rod and now Manny just grabs that spotlight from him in time for him to return to the Yankees?
Rivalries aside, RIP Nick Adenhart 04/09/2009.

btw
I looked up the deadball era ending and I guess a few things happened then.
Ray Chapman got beaned and died, and they changed the rules to force a new ball to go in the game when the old ball got dirty. Before then, baseball asked fans to throw balls back, and a ball might be used for an entire game.
The spitball was outlawed.
Babe Ruth came along, and “smallball” became less popular and playing for the big inning seemed to be a better option.

Bill Plaschke is a fucking cartoon charatcter. His fake righteous indignation is hilarious. He is a riducluous blowhard…he went so far in the SC interview to claim that Manny is lying and it was definitely steroids. A few simple phone calls and some leaked MLB paperwork will probably end up showing Plashke’s ass in public, as it sounds right now like it wasn’t roids. I’m glad we don’t have anyone like that in Dallas. Say what you want about Grandpa Urine, but he falls more into the class of “Old, stubborn crumudgeon that is argumentative for the sake of being arguementative” instead of “completely incompetent” like Plaschke.

some quotes
Without Novitzky’s work, there would have been no BALCO scandal and the Mitchell Report would have had significantly less heft. It wouldn’t have included Clemens or the names of dozens of players connected to Kirk Radomski, the former clubhouse attendant for the New York Mets who said he distributed steroids and HGH. Novitzky wrote a 27-page affidavit in 2005 that spelled out the allegations against Radomski.
The public controversy surrounding the IRS agent dates back to an article published in Playboy magazine in May 2004 by Jonathan Littman, an acclaimed author who writes for Yahoo! Sports. According to the article, Iran White, who worked the early stages of the BALCO case with Novitzky, made the following allegations:
• That Novitzky seemed to care only about busting Bonds and that he expressed disdain for baseball’s home run king.
• Novitzky used Bonds as the lure in persuading law-enforcement agencies to pursue the case and enlist the help of White, an undercover cop forced to leave the investigation when he suffered a stroke.
• That he heard Novitzky talking excitedly to one of the drug agents about a book deal.

by Kinslerhomer on May 7, 2009 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
its moot now
its hella long but the highlights were/are:
1) hGH is untestable
2) the only way to get someone for it is to follow the money (GMJ and co), have someone admit to it (ankiel/byrd) or to have evidently “other evidence” that a player was around it (if you believe what jordan schafer claimed – a story in the atlanta paper said that “Schafer was suspended for anecdotal evidence in an investigation of hGH. It has never been disclosed what that evidence was.”)
3) hGH is not proven to work alone — makes you “thicker”
4) hGH is not proven to help with injuries
5) “Heavy users might quickly experience carpal tunnel swelling in the hands, and long-term use can lead to heart disease, diabetes and debilitating joint swelling”
6) hGH may work well in conjunction with other substances (like testerstone)
which leads to 7) there would be no good reason for manny to be taking hGH unless basically he was trying to recouperate from an injury (of unknown origins) which might explain the reason the contract talk dragged on so long but not because he was “working hard” to “get in shape” in the offseason

new news per yahjoo sports
A source close to Manny Ramirez(notes) said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not "an agent customarily used for performance enhancing."
At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.
Ramirez tested positive for the substance during spring training, then was administered a second test more recently, and it also was positive.
Ramirez, the source said, acquired the substance through a prescription from a doctor in Miami for his medical condition. The source intimated that Ramirez might bring legal action against the physician.

see longhorns links below — bsically it can lead to hypergonadism
Hypogonadism may be induced by chronic use of anabolic/androgenic steroids (AAS). The negative-feedback system of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis (HPTA) shuts down pituitary production of gonadotropins after extended exposure to AAS. This has been documented both in patients receiving AAS for legitimate medical reasons such as AIDS or cancer and in athletes using AAS illicitly.
Hypogonadism may persist for some time after steroid use is discontinued, or indefinitely until treated.

Manny's statement
Recently I saw a physician for a personal health issue. He gave me a medication, not a steroid, which he thought was okay to give me. Unfortunately, the medication was banned under our drug policy. Under the policy that mistake is now my responsibility. I have been advised not to say anything more for now. I do want to say one other thing; I’ve taken and passed about 15 drug tests over the past five seasons.
Again. Why didn’t he go through the team physician? He deserves to be suspended just for his stupidity. Why any player would not get any prescribed medication throught the teams doctor is beyond me.

From what little I know
I doubt this is a problem he’s had all of his life without treatment as he wouldn’t have been able to have put on much muscle mass naturally.
This doesn’t rule out that he could’ve gotten it later in life without steroids because that definitely does happen, but prior heavy steroid useage is a much commoner cause.

per WC/twitter
injuryexpert:: Manny took HCG. Confirmed.
so now the questions are
1) did he take it because of anabolic-induced reasons or has this been a historical problem (should be easy to find out )
2) why was it leaked what he took (medical privacy)/failed – MLB really needs to get a damn hold on these leaks
3) hGC helps “sythasize” testeostone so does he have other probs that have led to him producing low testeostone?
i still think the dodgers/agent/manny has to have something up his sleeve — if you can get it in latin america (clearly you can in mexico), why did he get it in miami/the US?

It could just be following a doping cycle
Takes some form of testosterone between testings (probably with a masking agent for safety) and then takes the HGC as a follow up.
by cstorm15 on May 7, 2009 1:34 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
right
and im saying i wonder if a) he has a medical history that would require him to use the drug (would be easy to find out i would think) or if b) it is fairly clear he has been on ’roids —> c) are there ANY other option other than hGC to “restart” the synthesizing?

1:30pm: ESPN’s T.J. Quinn and Mark Fainaru-Wada say the drug was hCG – “a women’s fertility drug typically used by steroid users to restart their body’s natural testosterone production as they come off a steroid cycle. It is similar to Clomid, the drug Bonds, Giambi and others used as clients of BALCO.”

yes and no
yes – because theother guys were using undetectable stuff + his comment about 15 drug tests last 3 years and passing all of them is a lil fishy
but no – because it could be because of a previous health problem (i really want to know if he has one) or it could be a part of any steriod

by t ball on May 7, 2009 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That is the reason why these sorts of drugs are banned substances
Masking agents are illegal because you wouldn’t use them unless you are masking something. Likewise, a recovery agent was decided on being illegal and likely agreed upon by the players association because people don’t use them unless they are masking something.
Maybe there is a medicinal purpose for it, but there is a reason that the ball must be in the players court to clear it with the league first.

So it is indicative of something performance enhancing...
Lets be rational for a minute here: if he had a real medical problem than required this, a long term medical issue that had been documented before, Selig would not have suspended him. A suspension of Manny Ramirez is not a good thing for baseball. If there is any sort of medical rationale for it, he wouldn’t have been suspended for 50 games. Maybe a short suspension or fine for “not following appropriate protocols” or whatever. Not the full deal.

I agree
However, I do want to remind everyone that this is AJM’s favorite commish handling the issue and his ego is not to be overlooked.
But in general, I really agree with this line of thought. Also the fact that Manny immediately rejected the right to appeal.

These are drugs that mess with sex hormones! Sex hormones include testosterone. That seems like something I’d at least look into regarding whether it is banned or not. This isn’t giving some pill to help relieve stress that happens to affect the adrenal glands.
Any doctor that a multi-million dollar baseball player goes to should know that this is something that may be trouble.

David Bell:
Linked To: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG)
The Story: Bell ordered and received Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) from Applied Pharmacy in April 2006. Bell said the hCG was for a ‘medical condition’ which he declined to disclose. Bell’s name was revealed in a Mar. 6, 2007 Sports Illustrated article entitled Inside the Steroid Sting.
jay gibbons: (from SI)
source in Florida with knowledge of Signature Pharmacy’s client list alleges that between October 2003 and July 2005, Gibbons received six separate shipments of Genotropin (a brand name for synthetic Human Growth Hormone), two shipments of testosterone and two shipments of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), a hormone produced naturally during pregnancy, but taken by anabolic steroid users to stimulate the production of testosterone, which is suppressed as a result of steroid use. The information regarding Gibbons only pertains to receipt and not actual use of the drugs.
JHJ
The “Almarashi” signature was also affixed to prescriptions for Genotropin and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) allegedly sent to Texas Rangers outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. in 2004. In Hairston’s case, the drugs originated from a compound pharmacy in Alabama, according to documents reviewed by SI, but similar to the Gibbons’ case, the information pertained only to the receipt of and not actual use of the drugs. Moreover, Genotropin was not yet banned by MLB.

The Rationale for Banning Human Chorionic Gonadotropin and Estrogen Blockers in Sport — David J. Handelsman from Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism
Abstract
Context: The objective of the study was to review the rationale underlying the banning of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and estrogen blockers (antiestrogens, specific estrogen receptor modulators, aromatase inhibitors) in sports for male and female athletes in the light of gender differences in regulation of reproductive physiology.
Evidence Acquisition: We reviewed well-controlled clinical studies of exogenous testosterone effects on human muscle size and strength in men and all available evidence relevant to the effects of hCG and estrogen blockers on blood testosterone in men and women.
Evidence Synthesis: Well-designed placebo-controlled clinical studies in men with suppressed pituitary-testicular axis establish a strong case that, across a wide range from sub- to supraphysiological doses, muscle growth and strength is proportional to exogenous testosterone dose and resulting blood testosterone concentrations. In men, there is unequivocal evidence that hCG and estrogen blockers cause consistent and sustained rise in blood testosterone concentrations. In women, although there has been no direct testing of ergogenic or myotrophic properties of exogenous testosterone in healthy women, either hCG or estrogen blockers do not produce any consistent or biologically significant increase blood testosterone concentrations.
Conclusions: In men undergoing potential stimulation of endogenous blood testosterone concentrations, blood testosterone concentration is a reasonable surrogate measure for muscle growth and increased strength in men. Because hCG and estrogen blockers produce marked increase in blood testosterone concentration in men, this provides strong evidence to support the banning of hCG and estrogen blockers in men. In women, however, the negligible effect on blood testosterone suggests that drug-induced performance enhancement by hCG or estrogen blockers is highly unlikely. Furthermore, routine urinary hCG testing in young women risks invasion of privacy by detecting unrecognized pregnancy. These considerations suggest that prohibition of hCG and estrogen blockers should be restricted to men in which they are well justified.

hCG
So hCG isn’t produced in men, it’s only produced in women by a developing pregnancy and it maintains the pregnancy. So much hCG is produced that it overflows into the urine and that’s how pregnancy tests work, they test for hCG.
hCG is very similar to another hormone, LH, that is produced by the pituitary gland by everyone, including. LH stimulates leydig cells in the testes which produce, you guessed it, testosterone. Yes, hCG can act as LH and stimulate testosterone production.

ok are there other
non-“illegal” choices other than hCG?

Hmm
I would have a hard time saying there were, because any other choice is also going to stimulate testosterone production, which is what the problem is here. hCG in men is used medically as a treatment for hypogonadism, but if he had that he would have very little to no testosterone without taking meds.
This whole thing seems strange to me, like somethings missing or not being said. There’s no way he should have been anywhere near something that increases testosterone knowing baseballs rules.
Plus, they keep saying hCG is untestable; while I don’t all the chemistry about it’s breakdown in the bloodstream, it definitely is testable. Maybe not if used as a testosterone stimulant though. I don’t know.

my understanding
is that hGH is what is untestable, not hGC — but then again the way they got bell/gibbons/JHJ was by following the money — but they got the reds draftee via a failed test?
like i said above, feels like there is something up manny/dodgers sleeve — manny simply has too much to lose by seeming liek he has taken steriods (both in legacy after basbeal
and earning potential after baseball @ signings, etc)
theres the other question/thing that you bring up though, which is was he taking it for the testerstone increases or was he taking it to recover from using PEDs or was he taking it for a “real” reason?

Sean Casey says no one expected a guy of this caliber to be on the positive list.
Um. . . is he really that stupid? Isn’t that illogical and best and the opposite of sound reason at worst?

ha yeah, what is ARod's caliber then?

I'm pretty sure he meant, from the rest of the context, you don't expect good hitters to use.
And that’s kind of stupid, and the sort of thing I’d expect from a player trying to stick up for players.

So there is still something fishy about this
Why is Manny waiving his appeal of the suspension?
Something about this says that Selig and Manny came to an agreement about this – Manny agrees not to appeal (because, that is really the only reason not to appeal) in exchange for something. Because if the story were true (it was an accident, Dr misprescribing, whatever), then he’d have a strong case for appeal, at least publicly
This is like getting a huge speeding ticket, saying “Judge, I was going 60 because the speed limit sign was covered and I mistook the 55 for 65, but I’ll go ahead and agree I’m guilty anyway”

I doubt there was any deal
Manny probably wants the story to go away with as little knowledge out there as possible…the impossible dream. If he says that it wasn’t a performance enhancing drug and that it was prescribed by his doctor, it makes him look likes less of a cheater. If he doesn’t appeal and accepts that it was his ultimate responsibility under the rules, then it makes him look like he’s trying to be responsible now.
Unfortunately, that plan only works if people don’t find out the real reason for his suspension.
