That sucked
Only the Rangers could manage an entire game without a walk against a guy who has 18 walks in 26 IP.
And the Kris Benson thing is as done as the Guardado thing. Neither of them should be here.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I think everything you just said is agreeable.
I award you an imaginary point. Consider it one positive numerical value, if you will.
B-Mac sucked and the offense needs Hamilton back at full strength.

Thankfully Hamilton is coming back, and Davis finally had a good day.
the preceding post was a great success.

15-12 second-order record.
First in the division by three games. And, if I’m not mistaken, we just out-hit the A’s, so that probably won’t change much.
Silver lining, people. Silver lining.
By the way, third order record (which is the most meaningful): 14-13
Still best in the division by two wins, though.
There is no silver lining
Serioulsy, the Rangers inability to draw walks is disturbing. What in the hell is wrong with them? This could be the high water mark this year. Or yesterday, anyway.

Oh.
Well, I’ll still take being the best team in the division by a not-insignificant margin more than a month in to the season as a point of pride.
However fleeting it may eventually be.
um.

I didn't see most of the game (or beatdown, depending upon how you look at it)...
So would someone care to fill us in on how McCarthy looked (and what went wrong)?

Not as bad as any stats will tell you.
His peripherals probably go down as a little better than raw value. And his actual performance probably a little better than that.
He was locating excellently for much of the game just on the edge of the zone, but the ump started with a huge zone and then shrank it over the course of the game. It was insane. And then when he started getting squeezed, he lost it.
Benson
I take it he allowed 2 inherited runs to score in the 5th?

And I'll say, the large zone was not too big and the small zone was not too small.
The problem was that it got changed over the course of the game.
If you want to waste a little time
Look at MLB gameday batter by batter. I think that will tell a lot of the story.
I’m not too concerned with the strike zone changing, it’s not the first time that has happened. I’m much more concerned that Brandon obviously got flustered, failed to adapt, and let the wheels fall off.
His post game comments
he seemed to realize that from what I read at the Rangers site wrap up.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I don't like that BMac is easily flustered.
But, I still wish someone would bitch about the crazy strike zone. I really think Washington should’ve been faster out of the dugout, like after the 2nd or 3rd ball call to Giambi, to settle BMac and bitch at the ump a bit, just to show BMac that Washington has his back.

The 4th inning was really weird.
His last game through the 3rd inning today, McCarthy had thrown 110 pitches of which 34 had been called a ball.
The first three batters of the 4th inning had 11 pitches of which 9 were called balls. It seems weird that he suddenly couldn’t throw a strike at all. So, I’m buying into the theory that the strike zone suddenly shrank, especially when it seemed to shrink to a couple of sluggers that have been fairly high OBP guys in the past.
Nevertheless, I agree with tyd3311 that it didn’t have to end in a meltdown. I think McCarthy’s perfectionist mentality has a much bigger chance than his stuff of keeping him as a #4 rather than developing into a #2.

Now I have to go about my evening resigned to the fact that we lost, and I have to wait until tomorrow for us to try to fix that fact. Sucks.

According to Fangraphs
Our BB% is 7.2. Don’t know if that’s been updated to allow for today’s horrid display of anti-discipline, but that’s second to last in the entire major leagues. Seattle is last with a 7.1.

It would appear after yesterday we’re now dead last in the majors with a 6.9 BB%. Sweet.

Whatever, I'm done with that game
Tomorrow its Harrison vs. Contreras. We scored 7 off of him last time. I think we can manage that again.
Its a sweepable series with Millwood facing off against Danks and Padilla facing off against Bartolo Colon.

How much longer do we have to watch Blalock bat clean up?
Good lord, he’s killing me.
"So, is there any tread left on the tires? Or at this point would it be like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?"
I don't get why he's getting ABs
The guy with the shittiest plate discipline on the team (minus CD) is somehow starting over the guy with the best plate discipline on the team.
I think they are forcing RW to use him there purely for trading purposes

That's what it looks like to me too
you would think after 20 something games it become apparent that he’s not a clean up guy. I would take him at 6-7 though, either way there is no real valuable explaination having him stay at the 4 spot.

Nate Gold is in Taiwan now
In other news the La New Bears have signed first baseman Nate Gold. In 2008 the 28 year old batted .255 with 23 HRs and 90 RBIs in 127 games with the Oklahoma RedHawks (AAA).
He is keeping a seat warm in OKC
for Smoak. He was just signed to a AAA deal.

Cahill
So now after watching both Anderson and Cahill pitch against the Rangers, I have to say I’m somewhat impressed with Cahill (Anderson, not so much).
I thought Cahill was extremely lucky today on some balls that were scorched right at fielders (Young’s liner to third comes to mind)… but the fact is, he put zeros up there. I can’t say I saw many pitches that the Rangers swung at that were balls (usual suspects, Blalock and Davis excepted). I thought his control was good, good movement on his pitches, and if he keeps pitching like that the Rangers will have to deal with him regularly for the next five and a half years (at which point Beane trades him to the Yankees and his arm falls off three days later).
Yeah, not that it was the difference in a win or loss most likely.
But we were on the wrong end of the luck see-saw today.
Some photos... (please click on this subject line if you hate pictures of baseball)

Kris Benson sharing with C.J. Wilson and Derek Holland the art of the 84 MPH fastball. “The key, fellas, is not being good at baseball.”

The pre-game Red Bull toast brought to you buy Derek Holland’s pink rookie backpack.

I love you, but, if barbed wire doesn’t say Oakland, nothing does.
I took more photos of the actual game, but, it was terrible so I won’t show action shots of failure.

I hope it was learned...
…that after throwing Jack Cust a first-pitch, off-speed strike, don’t throw him a fastball for a strike on the next pitch. Ninth inning single last night, grand slam today.

I'm seriously stunned.
I really thought he had the ability to be solidly above average, but he’s looking like Pujols out there. Maybe with a little less range, but better reach and reflexes.
With the value defense holds nowadays, this is an awesome development
So if, if, we do decide to trade him, were not trading a one dimensional player whose future is at the DH position.
Ugh
If the Ranger’s could just not have an embarrassing loss at the end of a winning streak, I would lose my mind.
McCarthy and Benson were both
just trying to ensure that FF got the day off yesterday and that no one was tempted to use him. They were thinking of the team first, that is the kind of teammates they are.
