Brandon Freakin' McCarthy
I try my hardest to put aside what we lost to get McCarthy. I remember being at my tramp ex-girlfriend's house, sitting on my wi-fi, the moment lonestarball.com reported Jonboy Daniels was trading John Danks for Brandon McCarthy. I had been 100% on board with the rebuilding through draft concept, and was ready to give them 3 years of leeway, as long as they stuck to the plan. But I digress...
Is Brandon McCarthy a good pitcher who just suffers the occasional lapse - one that will get things straight and stop making those 1-2 BP pitches per 3 innings? Or is he just a strikingly average MLB pitcher who says the right things but simply doesn't have what it takes to excel in the MLB? I'm already reserved to the fact that he will never, in a million years, be John Danks. He will never be a #1 starter and an all-star. He will never make Jon Buffoon Daniels truly proud of his trade decision. But will he at least be a decent #4 starter on an excellent rotation?
When McCarthy first came to the Rangers, he did an interview with GAC, where he pronounced himself as a "sleep all morning" kind of guy who woke up 30 minutes before he had to be at the park. Is he like that anymore? He says the right things now, namely that he occaionally makes "awful, awful pitch(es)", and that his high pitch totals are unacceptable, but does he do anything about it? Is he working on his weak mechanics? The leverage he should get with his long legs should be immense, and yet he pussyfoots down the mound.
Final question: How long before Derek Holland surplants him?

forget about him changing his mechanics
to me, he looks the same as he always has. honestly, he needs to stop thinking so much about his mechanics so much and just pitch. the big leagues aren’t a place to have doubts about your mechanics.

Coincidentally Hogeboom was a pretty good pick in the 1980 draft. Only person better the Cowboys could have picked was Eddie Murray.

McCarthy...
I may be one of the few that thinks he will be fine. I really think he can be a quality ML starter and if he stays healthy can put up a decent season. Somewhere in the range of a 4.50 ERA and 180 IP or so. I don’t think the problem is his stuff. I think he’s still learning how to pitch at this level. Look at how much he has pitched in the last 3 years or so.
Perhaps I’m too optimistic about him, but the only issue I see with him is health. If that is fine then I think he will be fine. In my eyes he hasn’t looked that bad this year at all.

im sorry but john danks was not a 130 era+ guy before he learned the cutter
from fangraphs:
Danks lowered his ERA by well over 2 runs this past season. Will that dramatic improvement hold? In a word, yes.
Danks upped his K rate slightly, from 7.06 in ‘07 to 7.34 in ‘08. He also slashed his walk rate significantly, from 3.5 BB/9 to 2.63 BB/9. However, the biggest difference in Danks’ numbers came in the home run department:
2007: 1.81 HR/9, 13.8 HR/FB, 34.8 GB%
2008: 0.69 HR/9, 7.4 HR/FB, 42.8 GB%
With a few more strikeouts, as well as significantly less walks and homers, Danks cut his FIP ERA from 5.54 in 2007 all the way down to 3.44 in 2008. To what can we attribute this dramatic turnaround? A look at Danks’ pitch data reveals the addition of a new weapon:
In addition to gaining nearly 2 MPH on his fastball, Danks added a cutter to his repertoire. A look at Josh Kalk’s pitch F/X data reveals why this offering is so important to Danks’ development: the cutter gives him a pitch to work away from lefties and in on the hands of right-handers. Essentially, the offering opens up a whole new quadrant of the strike zone previously unavailable to him.
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

if you were told you could get a guy who did this:

well i mean
poveda k’s a little less than danks, btu also has a lower bb/9 + about the same whip
so its not perfect but i would think that a guy who has a 10 k/9 + 2 bb/9 is a pretty damn good pitcher worth getting (oh yea, and hes 6’7’’)

This Clod
…probably never even heard of John Danks before he was an established big leaguer.
When that trade went down I was somewhat skeptical but could understand the reasons it was made. I think it’s a shame McCarthy ended up being hurt. He may have been very good. In spite of the fact that he’s still young I’m not really sure they’ll ever get anything out of him.
Anyway, my point? If it wasn’t worth bitching and moaning about then, then it’s not worth bitching and moaning about now.
I hope to God that McCarthy not only establishes himself, but goes on to win 15 Cy Young Awards and own every pitching record in the book. Reason number one — I’m a Texas Rangers fan and like it or not, McCarthy is on the team. Reason number two — I would love to see all these dumbasses crawl back under a rock.
The Daniels’ front office has made some mistakes. So has every front office. The only one I can really say is indefensible is the giveaway to San Diego. That was years ago now, and there have been so many big successes since then that even I don’t give a fuck about that anymore. For all of my pessimism about what this team will do in 2009, I’m confident they’re building a winner for the long haul. Unless all goes to hell, the team on the field a couple years from now ought to be good enough to make us all forget about the bittersweet late 1990’s.
So quit bitching about water under the bridge already. You sound like my mother, complaining about crap I did when I was 10 years old.

Anyone who ever followed the Rangers
Knew John Danks when the Rangers drafted him. DVD was the future of the organization, then they dumped him for who they considered “a more major league ready pitcher”.
I hope McCarthy becomes a great pitcher, but I don’t know if that will happen. I’m a lifelong Rangers fan, but I’m not going to be a Jon Daniels pollyanna and apologist like so many seem to be.

That's a good point.
Every team makes mistakes, including every team before the Tigers that failed to nab him. There’s not a single team in the league that wouldn’t have room for him in their starting rotation.
by Black Francis on May 8, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't say they hadn't screwed up.
In fact I said that they did, and that was the primary move I was thinking about when I wrote.
You say “dumped”. I say they traded Danks and a spare relief arm for a very talented pitcher who was about the same age and already had some success at the major league level. Like I said, I was skeptical but at the time I understood why they made that move.
This is the classic situation in which a person thinks without nuance and complains on the basis of hindsight.
You have to understand that people JUST LIKE YOU will appear out of nowhere and bring this shit up, I guess after they’ve listened to Randy Galloway or something. While I cannot speak for everyone, in general I think it’s safe to say the LSB faithful are sick of hearing about it.
And I don’t really think there are a lot of “apologists” here, either. Maybe a couple, I don’t know. But most simply realize that Daniels and the people he has working for him have this team going in the right direction, and are happy about that. Do not mistake that kind of sentiment for being an “apologist”.

Allow me to clarify
1) I quit litening to d-bag Galloway 2 years ago. He thrives on misery in Dallas sports just like Hansen.
2) I’ve been posting for a long time, just not an individual fan post. It bums me out a bit that I try to get into the fray a bit and the reply is as if I’d slapped someone’s mother. If there’s a rule of etiquitte in terms of what to fanpost, please let me know and I’ll adhere. A lot of these clowns remind me of the kids I grew up with in BFE, who’d known each other forever and hated all outside opinions.

As far as a book of etiquette, I think it’s just common sense to lurk a while before you post. I don’t think you’ve done that, regardless of what you say. If you had you’d know the community a little better. You chose baptism by fire, though. More power to you.

They obviously saw something in the guy
Look, he cut Galarraga to make room for Jennings, which is deplorable. Jennings is getting better, but it’s just one more example of Daniels probably being a better scout than GM. Is there anything we can do about it? Unfortunately, no, but I’d like to see a little accountability from Jonboy.

What's with...
the trend of calling Jon Daniels dismissive nicknames? It doesn’t help your argument any. There are lots of people here that acknowledge Daniels’ mistakes, but you’re not going to convince them with silly little jabs.

Point taken
I just wasn’t aware so many Rangers fans were so sensitive about a GM who has kept them near the cellar. I’ve been a huge fan since 1982, and I’ve never been particularily surly until last year.

They're not in the cellar right now.
Cheer up.

Amen, they're not
I like this group of players, and they’re defying predictions.

near the cellar?
like andrew friedman!
got it
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

While everyone feels pretty good about the Tex trade,
I think it’s important to point out how good the Milwaukee trade looks. We have Cruz, Beavan, and Borbon. We lost a closer(that we’ve more than replaced), a 5th outfielder, and a guy that might be playing in Japan.
All GM’s have their ups and downs. The downs are just easier to bitch about.

He's had some ups lately, and I hope they continue
It’s just tough to think what our starting rotation could be like… I’d never trade the Unbeliveable Josh Hamilton for the world though. Great guy, great story, great player.

i mean a strong GB guy who has had success in the past
Anthony Andro, of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, reports Texas Rangers SP Jason Jennings (elbow) underwent surgery on his right flexor tendon Friday, May 30, and will miss the rest of the season. It was the second time in less than a year that he has underwent this surgery.
it wasnt like he had a torn labrum

There is no perfect GM
Daniels has made some crazy trades i.e. Young/Gonzalez and Danks, but he has done a lot more good then bad. He has perfected the art of picking up a former great player(Lofton, Everett, Sosa, now Jones) and flipping them for quality prospects. He has also done VERY well in the Teixeria trade.
I used to be leary of Daniels, but looking at his record, his positives are starting to heavily out weigh his negative moves.
Get off this ripping session of Daniels and enjoy first place.
So...why is John Hart still being paid?
