Jon Daniels chat session
The DMN hosted a chat session with Jon Daniels yesterday, and I know that there was some discussion of it yesterday, along with a FanShot, but I wanted to make sure everyone saw it and checked it out, as there was a lot of good stuff there...

Slightly OT
I’m going to throw this link in here from Maury Brown at Biz of Baseball called “Anatomy of a GM”. I think a lot of us give both too much blame AND too much credit to Daniels for making moves when he’s really part of a complex team of decision makers and evaluators. This post may not apply to the Rangers’ organizational structure in every detail, but it seems like a pretty good summary of the way things get done in general.

Great read
Maury Brown & TheBizofBaseball is a great website. A lot of information from Brown is the basis of my thesis regarding MLBAM.

Interesting article on the temperature's effect in baseball

over a year old but I had never seen it.
the preceding post was a great success.

Interesting
So, because the Rangers spend more of their season with temperatures above 70 than probably any other team, pitchers here have a harder go of it, perhaps. I wonder if Ranger hitters typically have more disparate home-road splits early and late in the year when temps are likely to be colder up north?

I wish Jonboy would get roasted for sucking
He’d make a very good scouting director, but you’re getting what you pay for with him as a GM. Shall we discuss what our rotation would look like had he not made his bonehead trades and cut of Galarraga?

RE: Nolan
I know our media doesn’t want to hear it, but we actually work very well as a team.

Great stuff
Every time i get frustrated with JD, his silver tongue woos me all over again. He’s like Obama: short on track record, high on potential.
And i loved the shot he got in on Galloway, putting him on par with the British tabloids. If only Galloway got to show boobs in his columns. It would certainly help his readership.

JD
That said, I’ve been pleased with Ron’s moves – he gets a lot of heat on some blogs and not enough credit, in my opinion.
FIRE WASH NOW, WHILE WE’RE STILL AHEAD!!!

actually
i think we should keep the “Fire Wash” campaign going all year. This team has a weird trend of stepping up when he’s on the hot seat, and then falling off when he seems secure.

This sounds right in line with everything I've been hoping:
Derek’s going to start for us this year but there’s no date set in stone. If there’s an opening in the rotation, he’ll be at the top of the list to fill that spot, but we’re not going to shake it up when the five guys in there are going well. Plus, we feel there are some significant benefits to having him in the pen right now – he’s building confidence & learning how his stuff plays in the big leagues, we’re able to control his innings on the year rather than needing to slow him down at the end, and he’s helping us win games.

I hope it's sooner than later
I know he’ll get knocked around more with less experience, but at the same time if he gets used to pitching in the pen for several months and then needs to stretch himself back out to be a starter, that would suck.
Not that his has anything to do with the discussion at hand but for some reason I thought of it…
If a starter is pulled because he’s sucking or there’s a rain delay or whatever, and his pitch count is low, why don’t they send him directly to the bullpen to finish throwing 120 pitches or so? Like with Feldman, when they keep taking him out at 85 pitches or whatever, why doesn’t he just go directly to the pen so he can throw some more and get stretched out?

stretching out
Part of me thinks that is one of the reasons why McCarthy has struggled since returning to the starters role. Probably not related, but I can’t get rid of that thought.
