Z on the upcoming pitching matchups

Our man Z has a post over at the DMN blog, looking at the upcoming pitching matchups for the next 6 games...

There's been some discussion about how the Rangers have seemingly been catching everyone's best pitchers lately...well, that changes the next six games, as Texas is set to face John Danks and then a bunch of guys who aren't real good (at least anymore, since Bartolo Colon and Jose Contreras used to be good).

Of course, the hitters are going to have to take advantage of the soft underbelly of the rotations that is being presented...the offense has a history of occasionally going into Operation Shutdown against weaker pitchers, particularly finesse guys, so we shouldn't be pencilling in a huge offensive explosion just yet.

But the opportunity is there to have a nice little stretch going forward...

OT. K-Law chat
Tom (NJ): Keith, what are your thoughts on the Jarrod Parker, Tim Alderson, & Madison Bumgarner being promoted to AA already? Too soon or should they be challenged? Also, were the Rangers too aggressive in putting Feliz in AAA?

Keith Law: (1:30 PM ET ) I have no problem with steering good pitching prospects out of the Cal League as quickly as possible. Feliz to AAA was what I would have done as well – have to push a guy like

xxx (yyy): Rangers #1 minor league prospect right now: Smoak or Feliz?

Keith Law: (1:42 PM ET ) Smoak.

steve(pittsburgh): Do you like what the Rangers are doing with Holland? Doesn’t a player of his caliber need more innings to perfect his craft?

Keith Law: (2:02 PM ET ) I believe young starters should be broken into the majors as long relievers, period.

long relievers

Has he said that before? I don’t recall him being that clear and point blank about it.

heres the thing, t.

good teams with good pitching prospects have no real place to put those prospects when they come up, so they go in the pen and get their feet wet. when u are a shitty team and you have no choice but trail by fire, fine, but most teams dont use that as their ideal sitch

Very few teams

have 4th and 5th starters so good that a top prospect couldn’t fit in there unless they had a plan to start him off in the bullpen.

Hes behind on the times

Silva has been booted from the M’s rotation i believe

the preceding post was a great success.

Don't know

I just heard before the start he had to improve or they would remove him, and then that Wakamatsu confirmed he would be out after the game.

Although I hope thats all wrong, I’d love another crack at silva heh.

the preceding post was a great success.

If the Rangers don’t make Silva and Washburn look foolish, ooh, boy

By the way, since we love updating ex-pitchers stats

’Ol Armando has given up 11 earned runs in his last 11 innings.

the preceding post was a great success.

Whenever Galaragga gets brought up, I always think back to that photo

of him dressed up in drag with the rest of the Rangers rookies that year. Dunno why. Makes me think he should try that out on the mound.

that's because

i added him to my fantasy team.

and because he hasn’t been pitching against the Rangers.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

he isn't exactly dangling

on many waiver wires. i guess i should have drafted him in each league instead of Nolasco, who has given me a bag of nothing this year.

I got the real Florida ace

Josh Johnson, several rounds after Nolasco was off the board.

Doctor please. Some more of these.

by tricer on May 8, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

he's dangling

better than McCarthy.

I damn sure hope McCarthy does better this year. But, I seriously doubt it.

JD fucked that trade up and people who still think McCarthy is better than Danks are just plain STUPID.

Against the Angels

they will also miss Joe Saunders who is scheduled for the the game before the Angels play the Rangers.

i'd like to see

them go 4-2, at least, during this stretch. but i would hardly be shocked if they went 2-4. Colon and Washburn haven’t sucked this year, and our staff is full of jekyll/hyde pitchers.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on May 8, 2009 1:20 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmmm...

Who would you rather take the hill for your team, Jekyll or Hyde? Jekyll probably has a good understanding of proper mechanics and the physics of breaking pitches (although executing them is another thing). Hyde probably brings serious heat, likes to pitch inside (but what batter would charge the mound with him pitching?).

K Law

also has been saying all spring that Smoak is already better than CDavis. He is not a fan of davis. He is looking pretty smart right now.

by JTodd on May 8, 2009 3:13 PM CDT reply actions

I don't know about already better than davis

but there were plenty of people on here who said they’d take smoak over davis if they had to choose. maybe a majority. smoak is a legit super prospect, its not really much of an insult to davis.

its still only been one month, davis is essentially missing 50 points of batting average and striking out an extra 12% of the time. its whats known as a slump. hes still on pace for 40 HR regardless and the average will come back. as has been said, noone would care nearly as much if those was after a good month rather than to start the season.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 8, 2009 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it is that he isn't a fan of Davis

It is that he’s not as high on him as some people are, and he really likes Smoak.

by Adam J. Morris on May 8, 2009 4:18 PM CDT up reply actions

hes not reading right now

you don’t have to defend him

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on May 8, 2009 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Keith Law

is a fucking idiot saying Smoak is better than Chris Davis. For Law to jump out there and say Smoak is better than Davis is idiotic. I’d like to bitch slap his ass right now

I can’t wait to burn his ass come July when Davis is batting over 300

Probably around the same time...

the Rangers do the same thing with MY.

Although as long as MY keeps hitting like he has so far this year he can hit wherever he wants in the lineup.
