Game Report: OKC vs RR

RANGERS PROSPECTS:

  • Jose Vallejo -- I have always thought of Jose as a speed/defense kind of guy. Not so much anymore, here's why. I brought my stopwatch to the game last night and timed a few players going from home to first. Borbon and Boggs were easily faster ( by about 0.2 of a second ). Even Duran and Arias were faster to first and they both swing righty. I would not have believed it if someone else had said it. I am going to tonight's game also, so I'll double check the numbers. The main reason this would downgrade his prospect status is due to the decreased range factor. I'm totally bummed by this. I have heard it mentioned that Vallejo has put on about 10 or 15 lbs in the offseason. Has he? I don't know. He now wears a very baggy uniform so I honestly can't tell.
  • Julio Borbon -- High fly clanked off his glove in the first inning for a 3 base error. Eh, don't sweat the small stuff, at least he got to the warning track and had time to camp underneath it before butchering the play. The main concern with him has always been his plate discipline. It's not gotten any better, if at all. Which brings me to this point. Players like Julio, who don't strike out much, aren't really penalized by taking a few strikes. It bugs me that he doesn't make the pitcher work a bit more since he's really good at putting the bat on the ball. I can envision him roaming center field for a few years in Arlington, but I don't see him helping much on the offensive side. He tried to bunt twice last night. Not on his own, but from the 3rd base coach's signals. That would be a good development if he could augment his OBP a bit with a few small ball hits. The 2nd time he bunted the home plate umpire called him out for being out of the batters box when he made contact, and it appeared to be the right call. He didn't argue. He has some work to do on the bunts.
  • Boggs -- Looked great. I have always been partial to players who show great patience at the plate. He got his walk last night to help his OBP. He also hit a rope single and a huge wind aided homerun, batting against a lefty pitcher. I spent more than a few minutes trying to determine if I could detect any residual shoulder soreness/injury. Couldn't do it. He never cut loose with a big throw. So I would venture a wild guess that he could play right now in Arlington if they wanted him.
  • Maximiliano -- His stroke is coming back. He didn't start behind the dish though. We all know he can hit and that's why I wanted to see his defense. Poor Kevin Richardson couldn't hit his way out of a glass phone booth.
  • Neftali Feliz -- He throws tonight and I will be there to see it.  Right behind home plate as a matter of fact. I want to see how his control/command is for myself. If there's any questions you want answered about him, let me know before 5:00 today. Please no requests for photos or videos. Sorry, photography is not a hobby of mine.
  • Arias -- I tried to check on his arm too. He never had to make a difficult long throw so it's still a question mark in my head. He hit a mammoth blow to the upper deck in left field though. For such a thin guy he can really bomb them every once in a while.
  • Doug Mathis -- Control, OK. Velocity, OK. Pace of game, OK. Holding runners, OK. But that's the problem with him. He does nothing better than OK. Can't strike guys out, that's a big minus.
  • Other things -- Nate Gold is back at 1st base. He still Nate... Will Duran ever hit for a decent avg again?... Dell Diamond (roughly the equivalent of Frisco's park) has added some billboards on top of the press box and above the homerun porch. Not a fan of that. I wouldn't have even mentioned it, except for the fact that Nolan Ryan owns the team, and there have been a few whispers that when the OKC contract runs out ... Who is this left fielder we have named Royce Huffman and why were so many Round Rock fans cheering him?... Don't expect this OKC team to make a huge push to move into 1st place in the division, I don't see it happening...  If you're going to the game tonight, find me in section 119, row 20, seat 7, mention you're from LSB and I'll buy you a beer...
  • Astros Prospects -- who cares?

Otherwise, good info. Love hearing about Boggs’ plate work.

Sadness:

I don’t really feel like going now if Feliz is not throwing. Two clubs fighting for last place. I still want to double check on Vallejo’s speed though.

On a side note: I already had my story straight to give to the wife. Neftali Feliz, once in a lifetime view in this area. You see, her side of the family is celebrating Mother’s Day tonight. I was planning on gritting my teeth through the coming guilt trip, emotional pain, yada, yada, yada. So now maybe I’ll just throw the 12 buck ticket away. But, let me be clear about this, I’m not asking anyone to feel sorry for me.

Vallejo

Maybe he has put on weight or something, havent really seen him this year.
But i can say from seeing him often last season the guy was fast. Faster than borbon or andrus i’d say.

Borbon

I’ll be satisfied if he just hits about like Darryl Hamilton while playing good CF.

I loved Darryl Hamilton

But the last thing the Rangers need another free-swinger. He seemed to show patients in the AFL, so hopefully it’s just an early season regression, and will be sorted out by the buckle of Bobby Jones’ belt. I know JD is a fan of the prototypical leadoff hitter (see Kenny Lofton) — though I’m sure nobody’s complaining about Kins. But, I can’t imagine the organization will allow Borbon to go to Arlington until he can play that role.

That's why they call them business sox

Vallejo

Getting an accurate time from home to first is often dependent on the situation. Potential double-play balls are the best, but anything hit to the left-side of the infield also gives you a chance to get an accurate speed grade. I prefer 60 yard times, but that isn’t always possible unless you are working the player out.

The fastest Vallejo time I have is 4.0 from the left. He has consistently been in the 4.0-4.1 from the left block and slightly slower from the right block. However, his stop times shouldn’t be used as an indicator for his defensive range. Range has more to do with first step quickness, agility, and positional awareness than overall straight-line speed.

What is true is that Vallejo has added some bulk since last season, but I don’t think the added muscle will limit his effectiveness on defense or his natural speed out of the box. It’s entirely possible that Vallejo is short of 100% or that you happened to catch him on a bad night. If Vallejo is running anything over 4.15 from the left something is wrong.

Good stuff. I enjoyed the report.

Beau Vaughan

did get rocked very hard in his 2nd inning. I did see something very interesting with him. When he was warming up, I noticed that he appears to have arms and legs flying everywhere with that delivery of his. But his torso is almost motionless. It was beautiful to watch. Really, I mean it. Then when he got into trouble in that next inning his torso started moving around a bit. A noticeable difference to me and I’m not an expert on pitching mechanics by any stretch of the imagination. His breaking ball can make some guys look stupid-silly. Back to back K’s on 3-2 pitches. Beau’s fastball is usually 85 or 86 mph. The breaking ball is generally 75-76. It was the fastball that was getting damaged.

John Bannister, while he did sit at 91-93 mph all night, I don’t see the club’s fascination with him. Hope I’m eventually proved wrong on that.

Great report!

First-hand accounts with this level of detail are awesome. Thanks for taking the time to write it down.

May 10 Observations

Neftali Feliz’ right arm is still attached to his body. He three ~60 pitches at ~60% effort in the bullpen during the first inning. A trainer was there to remind him a couple of times not to overdo it.

Max Ramirez looked much smoother behind the plate than he did when I saw him last year in AA and AAA. He looked very comfortable blocking pitches in the dirt and popping out of his crouch. He’s never going to win any throwing awards, but he’s beginning to look like an average major league catcher. At the plate, his swing is as compact and strong as ever but his timing seems to be way off. I wonder if he might not be working extra hard on his defense at the expense of his hitting.

AJ Murray‘s ceiling is now a major league LOOGY. His side-arm delivery is producing very nice sweep across the plate, but his mid-70’s to mid-80’s stuff is going to get killed by ML right handers unless he keeps everything on the outside black.

Jose Vallejo made a great play diving to his right to stop a ground ball that was well on its way to right field. Based on internet reports, I was convinced that Vallejo should get looks at SS and centerfield where his bat might play in the major leagues. After seeing him for the first time, I am not convinced that he has the arm for either position. To my untrained eye, it looks like Vallejo has the short, flippy arm motion of a second baseman.

Brandon Boggs’ greatest contribution to the Rangers might be to become Julio Borbon’s personal tutor. Borbon showed some ability to get ahead in the count, but instead of working for a walk, he used 1-0 and 2-0 counts as opportunities to try to hit balls hard. If only he would take a few more pitches and learn Boggs’ short, foul ball stroke then he could become an absolute terror.

Bud Norris (Houston’s #3 prospect according to BA) has a dandy mid-90’s fastball. The 24 yo, RHP needs to improve his control, but if the Astros expressed interest in acquiring someone from the Rangers, I would be excited to see Norris as a part of a trade.

Greg Golson looks like a smaller, faster John Mayberry Jr. Both players have excellent tools but neither look to have the fire that you expect of a major leaguer.

Ramirez

That’s nice to read, and I hope that opposing teams’ scouts are saying similar things. The extra work on his defense, along with his wierd WBC spring, may partially explain his bat being down lately, but I expect him to start raking again soon, either way.
