16-14
Kevin Millwood did his job. Derek Holland and Darren O'Day did theirs, realistically speaking. The bats just didn't produce.

Politely go jump off a tall building
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Whether it was incidental or not
We’ve hit 7 of thier guys.
They threw behind one of ours.

Hawk Harrelson with the conniption on WGN
Claiming no way Jenks was throwing at Kins. The GM and the mgr declared they would throw more at opposing batters in the paper recently and Millwood just plunked a guy and whizzed another. OF COURSE he was throwing at Kinsler. idiots
Have you ever watched him freak out about the time Nolan Ryan murdered Robin Ventura?
He freaks out about Ryan not getting tossed and says the only reason Ryan won the fight is because Pudge held Ventura.
Jenks had just struck out two batters....he was putting the ball exactly
where he wanted to during those at bats and did the same thing with Kinsler

i don't know how you doubt it
jenks had ridiculous control that 9th inning. First pitch of the AB to the guy when there are 2 outs and nobody on base. Of course it was intentional
I don't think
Jenks would of been afraid to face Omar with Kinsler on 1B. Jenks missed Kins, is Ozzie going to DFA send him dowm to AAA now?

the bats
bring back MY and Hammy please. Just one more game…
and slap some patience into hank/byrd.
the preceding post was a great success.
yeah
honestly, we have too many holes right now and kinsler isn’t lighting it up.
you would expect to score more than 2 runs but not have a realyl high expectation
Davis would also fall into that category.
And realistically, having your two best hitters (not sluggers) out of the lineup does hurt. And Danks threw the ball very well tonight too. It’s tough to ask a lineup missing two key bats to do a whole lot with the pitching that they saw tonight.

I'm not upset with the loss
The bats bit ass, that’s disappointing.
But the pitching was solid, I’m happy.
happy after a loss?
I’m never happy after a loss. i’m just bitter I guess.

The offense still sucks though.

CD
can’t catch up to a FB and can’t recognize a breaking ball. Gee. Pitchers have the best of both worlds against him. The Rangers need to get Smoak up to OKC quickly. If he can handle AAA pitching and CD is still struggling at the ASB…
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year

But this “OMG Davis sucks we need Smoak now!!!!” nonsense is ridiculous.

Smoak, but only if he proves himself in AAA first.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Actually....
depending on how well Smoak proves himself at the AAA level by the ASB, I would like to see a Davis/Smoak platoon @ 1st.
And then, hopefully, the Hacktastic Hank days will be over.

for real though I wouldn’t mind seeing Hank at 1st and AJ just be full-time DH for a little while until Davis gets things together
that is completely unacceptable
i will not take the defensive hit for a guy who only strikes out marginally less than davis
I don't know
At what point do you just shitcan a 23 year old who is supposed to be one of the cornerstones of the future and who had a great rookie season?
Good grief, it just stuns me how quickly people have turned on this guy, particularly given how much love he was getting at the end of last year.
People have short memories.

Well, people shitcanned Salty for a 28 y/o backup catcher who had a couple good months last year
So somehow people shitcanning Davis so quickly doesn’t really surprise me.

Well
They’re both highly touted young hitters who have struggled in the beginning of their second go-round in the majors. And as a result, they’ve both been shitcanned by those with the “what have you done for me lately” mentality. So yeah, I think the situations are pretty similar.

Why?
Because Davis had a nice half season in the majors before his struggles? That seems stupid to me. A highly touted young player is a highly touted young player. You can’t defend one and say it’s okay to dump all over another.

whoa whoa whoa there AJM
If CD is still struggling at the ASB, the Rangers in a pennent race and Smoak is handling AAA, I think the Rangers have to consider replacing CD with Smoak. I am not turning on the guy but at some point he becomes a liability.

He's definitely not a liability right now.
He’s a disappointment, but not a liability. He’ll become a liablity when his defense bottoms out or his offense gets even worse. For now, he’s not as good as we may have unreasonably expected, but he’s still solidly above a replacement.
And, more importantly, if he’s considered a future cog in this machine, he needs playing time to show what he can do and to try and break out of his woes.
Davis is on-pace to be about a two WAR player.
Disappointing offense, but still not killing the team.
And even if he were a one-WAR player
or only worth hafl a battle, you don’t even think about shitcanning him after 30 poor offensive games.
23 years old. Made huge strides defensively. Plenty of time to work out his struggles at the plate. The Fuck?
Yeah, even if it were only 1, if you're building for the future and that player is supposed to be a part of it. . .
. . . there should be no doubt he’s in the lineup regularly.
+1
Let Smoak come at his own pace. He’ll be here soon enough.
What I’m thinking about is Davis becoming trade bait at the deadline if we’re in contention and looking to snag a pitcher. His value is obviously down from what it was this winter, but he’s still young and he’s been playing great defense.

Well
Smoak is going to make one of MaxRam or Davis expendable if all goes well. Max isn’t hitting right now in AAA, so right now he looks like the most expendable, but if we can get something good for Davis…

by LSJ on May 9, 2009 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Davis sucks, and Smoak should be brought up as soon as possible
if Davis continues to suck, at which point the Rangers will get something good for Davis?
Like I said above
He’s still young, plays good defense and has power potential. Even if he’s struggling, that seems like a fairly tradeable peice.
Hopefully however, he won’t continue to struggle and he’ll revive some value by the ASB break. At which point I would feel fine trading him for the right return because of his K/BB tendancies.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying we should start shopping him, just that he’s expendable in my eyes should the right deal present itself. I’m afraid I’ve come around to OC’s line of thinking on that one.

I've been on the "Davis might be tradebait" wagon
since last season, but I’d hope the Rangers wouldn’t even consider that until Smoak establishes himself and Davis’ value is at more of a relative maximum. Trading Davis should be a best, not worst, case scenario.
Good point
I’m just thinking though that given the weak nature of the AL west this year, dealing him could be more likely to happen at the deadline than in the winter heading into 2010. Nolan is going to be pushing for some kind of move at the deadline if we’re still in contention, and Davis seems like the most likely young piece to go.

by LSJ on May 9, 2009 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions
The thing is
any deal at the deadline better not just help the Rangers this season, but for the next two or three years as well. It better be for young, MLB-ready, front-of-the-rotation pitching that the Rangers can hang onto. Maybe Davis can be a part of that, but not unless he really turns it around at the plate. There’ll be too many questions for him to be a centerpiece, and he’s too valuable (even in a bad season) to have him be a throw-in.
In a perfect world, Smoak would be ready for the majors at the deadline (with the promise of above-average defense to go along with that bat), Davis would be performing to expectations, the Rangers would be in it, and a guy like Matt Cain would be available at fair value. The Rangers would then have some tough choices to make.
If Davis doesn’t tear it up over the next 50-70 games, though, I’d really hope he’s not dealt at the deadline unless some team’s willing to trade on his potential, not his 2008-2009 performance.
Good points
I wouldn’t want to see Davis dealt as a throw in, but I think I could handle him being #2 piece behind somebody like Martin Perez, provided those where the only two impact players we where giving up. Like Perez+Davis for Ricky Nolasco for example. But I definitely wouldn’t go trading that package for Roy Halladay or something, who’d only be under control for 1 more year.

So we trade Davis when his value is low...
…because…well, just because.
I still don’t understand why there seems to be such a push to move him.
by Adam J. Morris on May 9, 2009 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Expendable?
That idea is just as bad, that somehow you have to trade one of those guys (and soon!) just because Smoak looks to be ready by September or April 2010. Smoak is not “blocked”, and both Davis and Ramirez are still quite young.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
well
Smoak is about the only reason I would send down Davis. No way I roll with Hank or anybody else at 1b
MY's slump is grounding out to SS 9 times out of 10.
Davis’s is striking out 5+ times out of 10.
I still think its just a slump. A really ugly, long slump that I wish would end.
the preceding post was a great success.
Regarding Smoak
Does Nate Gold have anything to do with the org’s plans on leaving Smoak at AA?
I know you don’t let a Nate Gold block a Justin Smoak… But why did they sign him? Just an attempt to jump-start a bad offense for the time being?

So here's what I've been worried about all this time
Greinke is awesome, but the Royals can’t hit well, and the Angels had their one good pitcher against Greinke and so the Angels won 1-0. Now they’re 1/2 game behind the Rangers and have been hot lately. That’s the Angels’ dream scenario… Lackey and Escobar are on rehab assignments right now, and the Angels have been winning even though Ortega is stinking up his spot in the rotation. Lackey at 50 percent is still far better than Ortega.
This upcoming week will probably be very telling. The A’s look like a non-factor this year, the M’s have started to fall by the wayside after the generally bad offense has caught up with them… and if the Angels are able to climb back into first place even before the reinforcements show up… well, this is going to suck.
Geez...
hope you plan on taking your antidepressant this evening.
She say she are the manager.
by rockin_rangers on May 9, 2009 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions
There is no doubt
when the Angels are full strength it is their division without a doubt, they have more talent by far than any of the other west div teams, even if Hamilton hits like he did last year when he comes back the rangers will still likely end up like last season in 2nd place, the Rangers offense is not going to be as good as last year but i think pitching and defense will be better so they may actually finish a couple of games over 500…..next year though, lookout!
LOL seems that what we always say every year
When will this Rangers Pitching Nightmare Ever End, Year after year after year, it just goes on and on........
OT: Mavs stuff
Here is a quote I found from somebody on another website
“Since 2001, the Mavs are 53-50 overall in playoffs. Dallas’ record when Danny Crawford is NOT working the game is 52-35. Dallas’ record when Crawford IS working the Mavs game is. … 1-15.”
