Draft Day #2 Thread #1

The second day of the draft is almost upon us, so here's the opening thread.

First Day Picks:

Matt Purke, LHP, Klein HS (TX)
Tanner Scheppers, RHP, St. Paul Saints
Tommy Mendonca, 3B, Fresno State
Robbie Erlin, LHP, Scotts Valley HS (CA)

That's three pitchers and a hitter. Expect a few more hitters today, along with what I would expect are a high number of both college relievers and a few starters mixed in, similar to last year. The Spokane roster needs some filling out, as does the AZL roster, and the Spokane roster most notably needs a catcher or three, unless Tomas Telis will debut stateside there.

Best names still available:

Max Stassi, C, Yuba City HS (CA) - UCLA Commit
Luke Bailey, C, Troup County HS (GA) - Auburn Commit
Sam Dyson, RHP, South Carolina
Zack Von Rosenberg, RHP, Zachary HS (LA) - LSU Commit
Kent Matthes, OF, Alabama
Brooks Raley, LHP, Texas A&M
Kendal Volz, RHP, Baylor
Jeff Malm, 1B, Bishop Gorman HS (NV) - USC Commit
Brody Colvin, RHP, St. Thomas More HS (LA) - LSU Commit
Madison Younginer, RHP, Mauldin HS (SC) - Clemson Commit
Keyvius Sampson, RHP, Forest HS (FL) - Florida State Commit

Those are just a few names to keep an eye on, though they're not all signable.

I'll be chatting live here.

Jason Cole will be blogging live here.

BBTiA has draft coverage here.

Z is here.

I am very tired

I think I’ll spend a little less time in front of the computer today. I was up late reading recaps, reports, etc. and my baseball weenie is tired from being so wound up.

Kent Matthes

I think he’s the name i want in the fourth round. he’s a college senior so we know he’s signable. he reminds me of Eric Thames, the Pepperdine OF from last year’s draft who exploded with a huge senior season and then inexplicably fell in the draft.

From what I’ve read, Matthes was already established as a strong defensive OF with loads of OF assists before his breakout offensive year. I would love to add another guy like Mike Bianucci to our system, because power hitting corner OFs are always at a premium.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

And I have to say

I really enjoyed the “prime time” draft last night. It was so nice to be able to sit back and enjoy it, as opposed to clicking back and forth during work hours.

Thanks

Is it worth the Rangers even drafting a guy like Stassi in the 4th or 5th round? I know there are signability questions. Or is this a guy that some team takes much later in the draft just in case with the belief he is going to college?

by Michael Cave on Jun 10, 2009 10:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Stassi

He’ll need a signing bonus of at least $1 million, possibly as much as $2 million, to keep him out of college. I doubt the Rangers would take him at this point, having already taken Purke and Scheppers.

by naropean on Jun 10, 2009 10:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I could see the Rangers going with either strategy (high school or college-heavy)
The reason is that the organization is already loaded, and they've got a bunch of older/2008 draft guys sitting in extended right now with no real home. They don't need to pick up a bunch of collegiate organizational soldiers, so they may go after big-time high schoolers that fell and see if they can't sign a couple of those guys.

by JasonCole on Jun 10, 2009 10:24 AM CDT up reply actions

that's good to hear

I had always taken the org soldier approach to the later rounds as a given, but this gives me hope that we might snag another two or three legit HS prospects.

by naropean on Jun 10, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I hope they take a swing

at a couple of tough signs in the 10-15 range (for 3rd/4tth rd money) now that our system is stacked and balanced. I think JD flubbed those picks in the 2007 draft and hasn’t been criticized enough for it despite the fact that we had five 1st/supp picks. They were 1 for 5 in reeling in the tough HS signs, only succeeding with Ocampo.

Kids that slid that I like today( if signable) -

HS catchers: Bailey, Stassi
HS pitchers: Colvin, Rosenberg, Younginer

College players who slid that I like if coaches are conident they can fix their mechanics -
Clg Pitchers: Dyson, Dwyer, Doyle, Volz
Clg Hittes: Mathes

Some speculation on who slid and why here.

Guys I like who have a 4th round grades (per BA)-
Tier 1
Cowen JC Rhp
Tier 2
Dekker, HS cf; Hazelbakker, clg cf
Tier 3
Fellbauer, clg cf; Sierra, HS of; Dennis, HS SS;

Sleeper
6th/7th round
Randy Henry, JC Rhp

from the college ranks

also college guys

I’m high on LHP Del Howell from Alabama and reliever Jason Stoffel from Arizona who’s still available (and will likely sign for slot).

yeah

i had mentioned howell in a thread yesterday. he pitched very well in the TCL last summer and his K rate was strong this season, but his overall numbers weren’t there. If we got Matthes in round 4 and Howell in 5, I wouldn’t have a problem with that. Roll Tide.

in fact

getting a live armed lefty with poor college stats in the fifth round would have some nice symmetry with another guy who has worked out well for us (CJ).

by clark on Jun 10, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

Stassi suprised and not asking for the moon:

“I don’t know,” Stassi said about why he wasn’t selected on the first day of the draft. “I was expecting to go off the board pretty high too. The thing about signability was that I didn’t really put out too high a number. I stuck out a solid number, but I felt it was fine. Whatever happens happens and I’m perfectly fine right now and I’m excited to see what’s coming. Hopefully I’ll be picked on day two.” BA

by Goyogringo on Jun 10, 2009 10:35 AM CDT reply actions

i have a feeling

he won’t be there when we pick at 124. I bet plenty of teams called him last night and figured out some numbers that might work, and some team will pay him first/sup round money for a first round talent.

So Brooks Raley seems to have really fallen.

Read that he had a bad appearance in the Big-12 Tourney. Are people thinking he’s hurt?

by jcAustin on Jun 10, 2009 10:52 AM CDT reply actions

He was awful the last month of the season

Texas shelled him, as did Oklahoma. He also is a sophomore which means he has tons of leverage.

I hope we draft that Turley kid just so KoK can shut the eff up about him.

I’d love Younginer or Stassi here, but in all seriousness once you get to this point in the draft it’s almost a given that we’re gonna take someone I’ve never heard of. And that’s fine.

by clark on Jun 10, 2009 11:13 AM CDT up reply actions

BA had him a 3rd rounder
#87 ANDREW DOYLE, RHP, OKLAHOMA
Doyle has solid stuff and a craftsman’s approach to pitching. The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has the arm strength to dial a four-seam fastball up to 93-94 mph when needed, but he prefers to throw 89-91 mph two-seamers on the corners, allowing their sink to create groundouts. His slider isn’t a swing-and-miss pitch but it is an out pitch, generating off-balance swings and more groundouts. His changeup gives him a third pitch that induces weak contact. Doyle has an easy delivery and is always around the plate. He doesn’t have the sexiest arsenal, especially compared to flamethrowing but erratic teammate Garrett Richards, but Doyle does have 15 wins in two seasons in Oklahoma’s rotation. He projects as a possible third-round pick and potential No. 3 starter in the big leagues.

and it includes this text
Approximately 30 scouts were on hand last Wednesday to see the highly anticipated match up between Randleman RHP Daniel Tuttle and Ragsdale RHP Nick McBride. Tuttle entered the game as the consensus top prep pitcher in North Carolina, but it was McBride who stole the show in a 12-0 Ragsdale victory, throwing a six-inning perfect game with 14 strikeouts. While the score is indicative of a blowout the game was actually much closer as Ragsdale was leading 1-0 after three innings.

Nick McBride was in control the entire game with a fastball that sat at 88-91 range and touched 93. He has a lean athletic build and he looks to be around 6’4" and 180 lbs. Nick has the type of body that should fill out well and his fastball projects to be an above average pitch down the road. While he was not forced to throw many off-speed pitches, Nick would occasionally show off a curveball in the 73-76 range. Nick showed a fairly tight rotation on some of his curveballs, but scouts would like to see more velocity on the pitch.

by gamerabcd on Jun 10, 2009 11:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Perhaps

the Rangers are thinking that if they ever need any bats, they can just trade their really deep pitching. Dont know, but it is possible i guess

by Michael Cave on Jun 10, 2009 11:31 AM CDT up reply actions

You have to think

that the Rangers have now settled on a strategy to draft pitching heavily early unless an obvious hitter is available (Borbon, Smoak). Pitching is a longer-shot to develop, so you need more numbers. And if it develops, you can always trade for bats

if anything

the rest of this draft is indicative that we are going to do everything to sign purke and scheppers. last year we took some guys that fell in the lower rounds, but would have higher demands (which we paid over slot to get some of them). this year, we knock out a lot of the budget within the first round, and the supplemental. so we need to get some guys that will sign for slot to fill out rest of minors

Little Ruben's BA write up
#124 RUBEN SIERRA JR., OF, SAN JUAN EDUCATIONAL SCHOOL

Like his father, Sierra passes scouts’ eye test, standing 6-foot-2 and 175 pounds with room to fill out. As that happens, Sierra will likely have to move from center field to right field. He certainly has the arm strength for right—his throws from the outfield have been clocked at 92 mph. His other tools are impressive as well. He runs a 6.4-second 60-yard dash and can put on a show during batting practice. It’s a different story, however, against live pitching. As a lefthanded hitter, Sierra has a tendency to bail out—his step is toward first base—causing him to become exposed against pitches away. Despite his natural tools, Sierra sometimes looks like he’s just going through the motions. Still, teams that value tools and projection are dreaming on Sierra, and he’s seen as a player who will greatly benefit from getting into pro ball, getting better instruction and playing every day.

17tth prospect in GA
Another athletic outfielder, Braxton Lane, had a down spring. He’s a 70 runner on the 20-80 scale and has committed to play football at Oregon. His father played football at Oregon State, and he’s the nephew of former NFL running back MacArthur Lane. He switch-hits and would fit the profile of a center fielder if he could hit, though he has a below-average arm. The scouting consensus was that Lane can’t hit enough to buy him out of his football commitment.

Okay

I’m now advocating that Texas picks some of the Rice guys falling. Ryan Berry is a good pitcher who had an off year. He’d be a tough sign (Rice juniors often are, and he’s coming off a year with some injuries). Diego Seastrunk is a very versatle player who can catch or play infield and has a solid bat as well.

Maybe not this round but they should consider them soon.

Braden Tullis, rhp, Skagit Valley (WA)
Tullis is very intriguing on the mound. He sports a fastball that touches 91 mph, sits in the high-80s, and has armside run and sink. He is an outstanding athlete (he’s the fastest player on his team), and he throws all 3 of his pitches for strikes. He obliterated competition this year, allowing just 2 runs in 55 innings.

also this from BA

Braden Tullis, rhp, Skagit Valley (Wash.) Community College
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Tullis went relatively unnoticed at Timberline High in Boise, where he pitched and played the outfield. Tullis is a great athlete, who also played linebacker on his school’s football team and ran the fastest 60-yard-dash for Skagit Valley this year. Though he’s played outfield in the past, his future is on the mound. Over his first 28 innings, Tullis is 4-0, 0.33 with 27 strikeouts and 11 walks. He’s getting it done with a fastball that’s sitting 88-91 mph and has good armside run and sink. “He’s got a lot of movement, which you can’t teach,” Skagit Valley coach Kevin Matthews said. “He has a real good feel for the change and he’s working on his breaking ball. He throws all three pitches for strikes and all are quality pitches.”

BA #121 Prospect...good value
  1. JABARI BLASH, OF, MIAMI DADE JC

Blash played some high school baseball in the Virgin Islands, enough to try to use baseball to go to college in the U.S. mainland. He attended Alcorn State for a year but wasn’t academically eligible, due to transcript issues. He redshirted that season, then wound up transferring to Miami-Dade JC, where he didn’t even earn a starting job when the season started. He’s quite raw and has holes in his swing, owing in part to his large 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame. He also has big-time tools, and several observers called him Florida’s best five-tool prospect. Blash has plus raw power, with 10 homers in just 102 at-bats this season, and above-average speed (he runs the 60 in 6.7 seconds) and throwing arm (it’s a right field arm, if not the cannon reported earlier this spring). Some scouts dream on Blash’s frame and see a future Jermaine Dye, who also was a JC player.

Enough guys

get drafted into the pros, spend a few years in the minors, and then go back to college and play football if it doesn’t work out. Depending on how much of his college will be covered by signing, he shouldn’t have a hard time getting onto a college football team by signing later if things don’t work out with the Rangers

From Andy

Jabari Blash, OF, Miami-Dade CC (FL) – Another Florida JUCO outfielder, Blash has been most impressive this

Spring, hitting .353 with 10 homers in a tough JUCO environment. A Virgin Island native, Blash failed to qualify academically for Alcorn State as a recruit, and he ended up at Miami-Dade after playing in the Great South League last summer. Everything about Blash screams raw, but his tools are above and beyond that of normal college kids in the draft. For that reason alone, some team could take a risk on Blash early in the draft, with the third round being his possible ceiling. He’s got plus power potential, and while he’s not quite athletic or polished enough to handle center field, his defense in right shouldn’t hold him back. At 6′5", 215 lbs., Blash is a physical specimen that catches the attention of anyone watching a game, so he’s sure to have moved up boards this spring.

Go Rangers...don't suck...

17th Prospect out of Ariz
Pitching-Heavy High School Crop Disappointed

Righthander Thomas Lemke stares down at hitters from atop the mound. He has a great pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-7 and 205 pounds, but has gone backward this season. Sitting at 89-92 mph in the fall, his fastball was down to 85-88 this spring. He doesn’t use his height well, and his fastball comes in flat. Scouts also question his passion and say he looks lethargic on the field. He’s reportedly asking for $500,000, so teams will likely let him head to Nebraska and check back in three years.

Seriously, how fucking old are you? I know there’s such a thing as freedom of speech and expression, but this kinda shit should be banned. Theres is only one God and one Holy Word. Why dont you people get that? How much sense does it make to say that decreasing numbers of pirates lead to an increase in average global temperature? Drafting Purke and Scheppers

Does it free up your minor league bond a little to guys like Main or Perez or Kiker should the Rangers do a package trade at the deadline which includes a few of our present studs?

by Jayslick on Jun 10, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

If Texas moves

Perez I may start a fire. As for Main how much value does he have? Also most of these guys are going to be in the lower levels not the upper levels. Someone still has to pitch in Frisco, Bakersfield and OKC.

by Hull Fan on Jun 10, 2009 12:47 PM CDT up reply actions

Undervalued?

I think that using Main and Beavan as trade chips right now would probably be undervaluing them. They’ve both struggled at High A and, barring some major consolidation of skills, I’d say both are a safe bet to start next season wherever our High A affiliate will be.

by Mister Naxal on Jun 10, 2009 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

go look at your stats on beaven then call me back

by Jayslick on Jun 10, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep, I Was Wrong

Hello? Is this the right number?

I laid a brick on Beavan. I think I’ve looked at Main’s line so much that I conflated ’em.

He’s consolidating. That’s good to see.

by Mister Naxal on Jun 10, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Not Beavan

He has been better each start if not consistently getting better. Main still is lacking control, and Cali league is destroying it.

by gamerabcd on Jun 10, 2009 12:51 PM CDT up reply actions

All of the above need to remember

that one of the reasons you have a deep farm system is so you have trade chips. They’re not going to hang onto all of these guys. If the Rangers get to a point where they are one key player away from a division title in the next two months, I will applaud them for trading away Kiker, Main, maybe even Perez if the return is right.

If you have a chance to win now, you take it.

I don't disagree

about moving one or so. I just question the one. I also question whether a guy like Kiker or Main is enough for Nick Johnston or someone like that.

by Hull Fan on Jun 10, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

But is a division championship all that great

I know we havent had that here, but I have higher standards for this team, and the farm this team is developing. I want a team that will consistently win, not just take a chance this year and have to rebuild again next year.

by gamerabcd on Jun 10, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions

Trading one or two pieces

from this farm will not keep them from having the ability to “consistently win”

Just afraid of trading guys that will develop better somewhere else

Ie, Danks, Gonzalez,

Also, we have not seen the depth of the pitching really influx the pitching rotation. This is still an older pitching squad.

by gamerabcd on Jun 10, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

patience grasshopper

patience

Losing Danks/Gonzalez etc doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ever trade again

You have the prospect depth

for that, though, I’m not worried about there suddenly being not pitchers in the minor leagues.

Not even close?

They’re in first place now, what the hell are you talking about?. If they’re still in first place in mid-July it’s not even close? If you’re trading for a top of the rotation pitcher the price will be high, but I take the gamble.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Jun 10, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Were first place is relative

The rotation is smoke and mirrors. True Millwood and Feldman have been solid. But, who thought Feldman would be this good. Also, Millwood and Padilla are pitching on free agency yrs, so next yr both could be gone and we go from having a rotation to not.
