Yeah
Also Byrd and Cruz. Very weird, but I would bet you money Ian Kinsler had something to do with it.

A guy like Scheppers to the Perez and Fonts of the organization. Scheppers is polished, basically college senior who if not for injury concerns would be among the top amateurs in the country. So I know a lot of LSBers spent last night giving reacharounds
to each other congratulating JD for being so good at what he does and putting the Rangers in the unthinkable position of being annointed the number one system once again by Baseball America but think about it…in less than four months he will have been here 5 years.
5 years.
The best replacement in our system that we could find to take that start last night was Doug Mathis.
Oh yeah, somebody named Ted Lilly hung a Game Score of 70 on the Stros last night.

Not at all, FP
but I pay much more attention to what goes on between the lines at the major league level than most.
This year is much more about winning at the major league level.
We are desperate for both a starting pitcher and reliever plus it’d be nice if the supposed “sabermetric savvy GM” would impart some of what he knows to the dumbass currently putting our line-up together every night.

This team is in first place, is set up well for the future, and had a hell of a first day in the draft yesterday.
But you’d rather bitch about Doug Mathis, the fact a lot of us got enjoyment out of the draft, and take another shot at Daniels.
That’s pretty sad.

Maybe they pan out but it’s more likely they don’t. That’s just the nature of the draft and one of the reasons the best pitcher we could come up with was Doug Mathis.
Donuts has done a good job of getting this system recognized (although the AAA & AA teams are struggling, not sure about A team) but I wanna see what he does with a first place team that has glaring needs.

Seriously, what’s your point? He’s assembled a team that is currently in first, which you claim is the only meaningful measure of his success, and he has more talent scattered throughout the system that may or may not pan out. but that is hightly regarded by people whose job is to regard such things.

I hesitate to say it because it's very old turf but all of us
saw up close what Donuts was like without Nolan so he’s not going to get the credit that Beane or (can’t remember the guy’s name in Seattle with all the consonants) if they turn their franchises around and make it to first place.
Unlike Donuts, they’re given budgets and then have final decision capabilities.
Donuts is a much more effective GM this way but now he needs to come up with some very good trading ideas to run by Nolan because the team at the major league level has glaring needs. I loved the O’Day move and that was clearly a Donuts move but there’s much more to do, as evidenced by the team starting Doug Mathis last night.

I guess that’s my point. Donuts has much more work to do when it comes to the major league product because we had to start Doug bleeping Mathis last night.
I’m very excited that we’re in first place. You look at the landscape of baseball in the AL and there are no true juggernauts or dynasties in place and the AL West is especially weak. The window of opportunity is now open.
I’ve always doubted the abilities of Donuts to make moves that help the major league team but I have much more confidence with Nolan making final decisions.
The next 6-7 weeks could be very entertaining.

You keep mentioning Mathis
but the only way Mathis was winning last night was if he threw a CG giving up -1 runs. While the starting pitching is concerning now that BMAC has gone down, an even bigger issue could be how pedestrian our hacky offense is looking.

"Maybe they pan out but it’s more likely they don’t"
The odds are certainly against any particular player turning into a major league star. That’s why it’s such a dangerous exercise to pin all your future hopes on a couple of high-ceiling guys in a system otherwise devoid of depth (see D, V, and D).
But when a team has borderline unprecedented high-ceiling depth, as we do now, the odds are in the team’s favor. Only the most negative human alive could see otherwise.
We have probably five guys who could legitimately become a #1 starter. Will all of them turn into aces? Certainly not. But the depth is so scarily deep that I’m not at all worried about the pitching in the next decade.

Rotation spot
Boston has three starters right now with an ERA over 5.00.
The Yankees’ fifth starter’s job has been a revolving door all year.
Toronto has Roy Halladay, a mix of young guys, journeymen, and some spit and bailing wire holding their staff together.
The Tigers have Willis; the Angels’ staff has been riddled with injuries.
So it’s not like the Rangers are the only contender with rotation issues.

It's just a stupid, stupid
thing to argue about. Probably to be expected by someone who quotes game scores.
It would be like arguing about the Rangers backup OFs after a few injuries. There isn’t a team in baseball with infinite depth.
For all the crap Benson has taken here, his signing was just another attempt to bolster depth for injuries. Sometimes plans work out, sometimes they don’t. Hopefully Harrison gets back quick and has us covered.

it is certainly a crapshoot
but i would rather take a chance on these types, as opposed to guys like Scott Heard and Drew Meyer. Player development is a battle of attrition, and JD recognizes that. There is no reason to start projecting these guys into the 20XX rotation, but it is important that we keep adding new milk and allowing the cream to rise.

Doug Mathis was also #9 on the season's depth chart for starting pitching by my count..
Millwood, Padilla, BMac, Harrison, Feldman, Hurley, Benson, Holland all were ahead of him in the pecking order.
Think many teams round up anyone better than him at this point in the season??

Unfair use of a timeline..
It is currently June 10th, as I just learned, and yes Doug Mathis was the 9th guy in line to start.
Come October, which was your reference point for grading JD, Mathis may well have been passed by another guy or two, such as Feliz.

Even the great pitching teams have to deal with players like Mathis who aren’t going to be good starting pitchers on your team but still log some innings in the rotation. Injuries happen and even when you have depth in the minors to deal with those injuries, you’re still going to have to hope for those pitchers being on the right schedule to contribute to the Majors.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

You don’t turn around a franchise overnight when you choose to build within, especially considering the putrid level of farm talent JD was handed by previous regimes.
It took the Yankees several years to build that dynasty with their magic beans too.

by Anonymous New Guy on Jun 10, 2009 9:41 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, he can't
And with the “JD’s only doing well since Nolan took over” argument, he’s set himself up nicely to avoid giving Daniels any credit when this team goes on an extended run of AL West titles.
Never minding that, as a number of us have pointed out, that Daniels was perfectly capable of making good trades (including the best one of his tenure) without Nolan’s so-called supervision.

Wow, really?
You’re going to make that argument? How desperate of you.
McCarthy went on the DL monday, and they had to scramble to find a starter for the next day. Unfortunately, the Rangers depth at SP wasn’t available Tuesday, to no fault of Nolan Ryan (or JD). Remember, the team has three starters on the DL (McCarthy, Harrison, and Hurley), and three pitchers at AAA weren’t available because they had just pitched (Hunter, Corey, Rupe). Bringing up 21-year-old Feliz for a spot start out of his regular rotation schedule would be stupid. That’s 7 pitchers unavailable to make the spot start on Tuesday.
Thus, you’re basically saying it’s JD’s fault for not carrying a 12 man rotation. Is that really the argument you want to make?
Not that you’ll respond to this anyways…

Instead of spending $12-14 million on Lofton & Gagne before 2007 I would have liked to have seen that money used in a different way by Donuts.
I’d much rather have Ted Lilly right now on this team instead of getting a couple of half-ass seasons from vets who didn’t give a shit that were ultimately flipped for Beltre, Gabbard, Murphy and Max Ramirez.
The argument can also be made that if Donuts would have signed Lilly he wouldn’t have felt compelled to deal Danks for McCarthy.
Ted Lilly isn’t great but he’s very good and (like Danks) he also posts every 5th day. When you have pitchers that post every 5th day, you don’t have to run crap out there like Doug Mathis.

has something like 55 Game Scores of 50+ in 80 starts for the Cubs.
You may also say you don’t like Game Scores either because John Lackey got a 48 when pitching to one batter last month but it’s one of the best measures of how a starting pitcher can influence whether or not a team wins.

Right.
I love how you’re saying that we should have spent the Lofton and Gagne money on Lilly. Lofton and Gagne were one year deals worth $6 mil each. Ted Lilly signed a 4 year/40 million commitment. Also, Ted Lilly has been much better than anyone predicted since joining the Cubs, and there are 29 other teams that wish they had overspent like the Cubs did. Why don’t you go to their blogs and criticize their management for players they didn’t sign in 2007.
Here’s the argument you want to make: the Rangers should have signed Lilly instead of Padilla before the 2007 season. However, if we had signed Lilly, we wouldn’t have signed Padilla. Thus, the problem with not having a starter for Tuesday’s game would not have changed. Even with Lilly, we would not have had a starter for Tuesday’s game because Lilly would have taken Padilla’s spot in the rotation.
Since signing Lilly would not have changed whether or not Mathis started last night, you want to come up with a new theory as to how JD screwed this up? Or do you want to pretend you didn’t read this?
by cstorm15 on Jun 10, 2009 10:28 AM CDT up reply actions 5 recs
The Rangers could have signed both Lilly & Padilla
if they wouldn’t have signed Gagne & Lofton.
Given how Donuts obviously felt this team was still a starting pitcher short going into 2007, hence the boneheaded trade of Danks for McCarthy, it was a glaring misuse of his budget.
We’re still paying the consequences for the learning curve of Donuts and throwing Doug Mathis last night was yet another example.

Who cares.
Despite the winning, we’re still in a rebuilding year. If Holland starting this year makes him ready to play a major role in 2010, then it’s the right move, even if we lose a few more games this year.
by cstorm15 on Jun 10, 2009 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right, so your dream rotation has $33 million/year tied up in Millwood, Padilla, and Lilly
Unless you’re going to blame JD for having Hicks as an owner, having half the team’s salary tied up in 3 pitchers is not sustainable. That’s why it’s important to realize that Gagne and Lofton were only one year rentals signed to be used as trade commodities.
And you know this. This is why you still haven’t explained away how you’re substituting a $12 million commitment for a $40 million commitment. Also, you never explained why JD should have done something that 29 other GMs also failed to do (sign one specific pitcher).
Also, if we were supposed to try and win in 2007 (I’m assuming you actually believe this because you refuse to recognize any rebuilding efforts), who is your 2007 starting centerfielder? Remember that you’ve completely maxed out the budget by signing Padilla and Lilly in your fantasy world.
This is, by far, the worst argument I’ve seen you attempt to make. You’re better than this. You’ve run away and hid after better arguments than this.

Probably sometime
(maybe after the 23-42 start) during the 2007 season after Donuts got a good look at that steaming pile he put together.
It’s all kind of confusing because Donuts recommended that we give Tex $ 18 million per in mid-July which would have meant two players would have taken up half the allotted budget.. Jamey assures everybody the offer was serious and that the Rangers wanted Tex to take it.
Factor in that Millwood/Padilla were getting $ 21-23 million combined and it’s difficult to imagine how it all would have worked.

Well, they've already replaced Padilla with Holland.
Also, Mathis as a callup was more a matter of the rotation timing. They could’ve called up Hunter, but he pitched just last Sunday. Poveda pitched Monday.
When they call up Feliz, they want it to be for the longhaul.
Moscosco would’ve been the only other choice, based upon the rotation schedules. Mathis has been on a roll. He deserved a shot.

We built up Laird’s trade value (started him 39 of the season’s last 53 games) for that ? I’m unimpressed.
Feliz has an electric arm but he doesn’t throw enough strikes just yet so I’m not expecting too much from him in The Show this year.
I love DHolland. The kid’s going to be a stud but I’m not sure we have any other internal options that can be depended upon to help this year which means Donuts may have to part with some of these blue chips to help the major league team this year.

Jim: With Scheppers, when I was making my nonstop phone calls for first-round projections, I could see that coming. I think teams are leery of a shoulder injury. Not sure what he’s asking for financially, but I think it was more a healthy concern, not that there’s something horribly wrong right now, but just the history of being hurt. How about the Rangers getting Purke at 14 and Scheppers at 44? If those guys stay healthy and reach their ceilings, and you package them in a rotation with Holland and Feliz. Wow.

TCU
I worked as a delivery driver for the Mr. Gatti’s on Bluebonnet Circle for a couple years.
I used to love making runs to Greek Row- the frat guys were usually drunk or high, and tipped well, while the sorority girls would come out in their shorts or a long t-shirt and not much else.
I’ve had better jobs since then, but not many that were as fun.

Mr Gatti's?
They had to have the worst pizza I’ve ever eaten.
Of course, that doesn’t matter to stoned frat boys. And I can only hope you had a few special tips from the sorority girls when they didn’t have quite enough cash on them to cover the pizza

The Pitching Drought is Over
I thought about the draft for awhile last night and I came to a final conclusion. Within the next 3-4 years, if not sooner, the Rangers will have a true #1 starting pitcher in their major league rotation that they developed. I am not saying Scheppers or Purke will be that guy but the simple truth is they have acquired too many big time arms up and down the system to not have several pan out and at least one in a big way. I don’t know who that guy will be, but I believe strongly they have him. Someday in the near future I will be able to watch a guy like Roy Halladay or CC Sabathia or Josh Beckett in the Ranger rotation.
I have been a Ranger fan for a long time and watched as the likes of Kevin Gross, Brian Bohanon, Mark Clark et al were rolled out onto the mound. This morning I am happy and I will happily wait for the day when the ace of the staff shows up, whomever he might be.

Ok, just remember
that some of the guys we’re so excited about will turn out to be Gross, Bohanon, and Clark if they reach the big leagues at all, nature of the beast. Hopefully enough of them turn out well that we don’t have to rely on GBC’s.

When is anybody else going to tell the manager that Salty isn’t cutting it as a hitter, especially when put behind Crush in the line up?

I would have to think Bakersfield
He was pretty advanced coming out of Fresno last year, and if people really consider the Indy leagues to be A-level ball, Bakersfield would make sense. Though if he signs fast, maybe you put him in Hickory first and try to move him quickly.
Also, unlike some people who think that Texas will take a while to sign him so as not to hinder negotiations with Purke, I actually think the Rangers will try to sign him quickly. And I think he wants to sign soon – he’s barely pitched this year and needs to get back out there for real and he knows it.
from this interview:
Tanner: I would love to sign as quickly as possible, get into the system and start off. Hopefully improve out there and just move up as quickly as I possibly can. I’m going to work as hard as I possibly can to make sure that happens.
Go Rice Owls!

Some other great comments from Scheppers in this article...
Marc: Did they pinpoint what caused the injury? Was it a pitching injury or was it from lifting weights or doing something else?
Tanner: Ah, no it was pitching. It was over-work. I’ve seen Dr. [Lewis] Yocum and he said it was normal wear-and-tear on an over-worked arm. I threw a lot of pitches and a lot of games.
Later
Marc: So then what made you choose to go the independent league route, rather than return to Fresno State for your senior season?
Tanner: I’d rather not comment on that, if possible.
It’s pretty obvious why he went independent ball, I woudl say.
Marc: How close were you to signing with Pittsburgh last year?
Tanner: You know, I’m still confused by the situation. (Laughs) I don’t really know exactly what happened there.
Marc: Did you think you were going to sign with them?
Tanner: Oh yeah, I thought I totally made it. But they told me it wasn’t going to happen.
Marc: That must have been frustrating.
Tanner: It was definitely a big surprise.
All I can say is “Thank You, Pittsburgh!!!” Tanner seems like a matured, level-headed, freakily talented dude in this interview. I would not be surprised if he rivals Feliz for Rangers’ top prospect by the end of the year.

OT: Strike zone
Does it bother anyone besides me that the umpires consistently miss strikes at the knees?

I think it bothers McCarthy.
It also bothers me. Hard to implement “pitching to contact” when forced to put the ball in the sweet zone.

McCarthy and Padilla have by far gotten the worst of those missed calls.

There’s a few links I found on Google that suggest it’s OK.
I know the Straight Edge crowd isn’t real big on premarital/casual sex. Though the one straight edge kid I knew in college was really, really into Asian porn.

In spite of all their issues
The Mariners are only 5 back. The Angels are, what, 3 back?
Of course the door is wide open for anybody. Divisions aren’t won in June. Having said that, I don’t think the Rangers have what it takes to win it. I thought it would be the pitching that got them but it will be awful AB’s. And pitching. I’m not exactly convinced their staff is for real.
I’ve been living here for a few years but I didn’t exactly grow up a Rangers fan…my unbiased prediction would be a sub .500 second half.

My thoughts
Given their history, I just don’t expect the pitching/defense combo to keep excelling the way that it has. Millwood, for example. I don’t expect him to contend for the ERA title. And Feldman, as much as I have to defend him against Beisbol Jesus, probably isn’t going to be completely flat out awesome all the way through September.
And like Boog says, the way they’re hitting right now SUCKS. It’s far enough into the season that it’s going to be difficult to get the hitters to change their approach, and I don’t think they’re going to be able to hit well enough to cover for any regression in the RA department. It’s really sad because even with Hamilton out, the talent is there to do much better but they haven’t and it’s 6/10.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they had a .500 or so record from here on out. If that’s the case I think CAL definitely beats them and the Mariners might pass them, too, though I doubt it.
But I still have hope. As long as the talent is there I will have hope. I predicted something like 77 wins for the team this year and I’d really, really love to be proven wrong. It’s just that the hitters are so fucking maddening. Damn. Completely the opposite of what I thought this year would be like.

Reading Jamey's morning report - how did I not know until now
That Purke is repped by the same agency that reps Nolan, and which is part owned by Don Sanders?!?!
That should allay some concerns about Purke’s signability, at least with respect to this ballclub, especially if Sanders has some interesting purchasing a stake in the club.

I feel like it's just sinking in to my brain that Scheppers is a Ranger.
He’s gonna sign. And, he’s gonna be incredible. He WILL rival Feliz for the top prospect in the Rangers’ stable, but maybe only for a short while, since Feliz looks to be on schedule for a Holland treatment early next year.

Same here, I was just reading Jamey's report, 18 or however many hours after the pick
And I stopped to think, holy crap. This is Tanner Freaking Scheppers. Then I read Jamey’s comment about his heater sitting mid-90s and touching up around the century mark. I might be more excited about Scheppers than any pitcher not named Feliz or Holland, just thinking how close he is to helping. I think 2010 is extremely likely, but what about Keith Law’s suggestion to get him in the big leagues this season. You reckon we could use him in September as a power righty coming out of the pen to throw gas in the 7th inning?
Good grief. The pitching in this farm system has to be approaching borderline unprecedented levels of talent, in terms of quantity and quality.

Scheppers
I think he’s going to move pretty quickly, especially with a season of indy ball behind him.
Maybe giving him a major-league contract lowers his bonus demands somewhat?
"I dont care to debate with a troll." - Sharky
by RCCook on Jun 10, 2009 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's a good point, it might
Of course he seemed pretty eager to sign, so maybe his bonus demands aren’t too whack.
Scheppers is a case where it makes a lot of sense to offer a major league deal in lieu of extra bonus dollars. If things work as planned, he’d be almost certain to have his contract purchased at some point in the next 12 months. So, if you can afford to give him a 40 spot this winter, then IMHO it’s worth giving him the ML deal.
So the question becomes: can you afford the spot this winter? I know there’s a crunch looming there (though I don’t have time to look up the names and see how bad it is), but if the club thinks they’ve got a way to work it out and if they think that he can be of help down the stretch this season, it’d be a wise move.

by JBImaknee on Jun 10, 2009 3:33 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
The way I figure it, we probably subtract 8 names from the 40
Padilla, Guardado, Jennings, Grilli, Vizquel, Byrd, Jones, Blalock.
Four on the 60 day DL: Hurley, Eyre, Nippert, and Benny. Hurley gets added back at some point, and for sake of this discussion let’s say we keep one of the others and let the other two walk (Benny is a FA, the other two probably expendable).
The 40 is full, so subtracting 8 and adding 2 back leaves six spots open. Feliz is a lock. Castillo ought to be. Then I would add Kirkman, Beau Jones, and Zach Phillips. Barring no other roster moves (e.g. getting rid of Mendoza, which seems very possible), that leaves one spot open for the remaining contenders: Cristian Santana, Pina, Chad Tracy, Whittleman, and Swanson. Can’t imagine that Whittleman, Tracy, or Santana would get drafted in the Rule 5. Swanson, who knows. Pina might be the biggest threat, you may could stash him on the ML roster as a defensive replacement for a team who carries 3 catchers.
That doesn’t include a spot for any off-season/mid-season signings like, oh I don’t know, Benjamin Sheets. Or Smoak, if he gets called up later this season.
It’s not as desperate as I thought, it’ll just require some tough evaluation decisions on guys who are borderline prospects at this point (and probably not even that in this system).

this year is not too bad
Diamond and Arias might slide through waivers if they needed a spot on the 40. At this point losing them wouldn’t be a big deal.
Next year there might be 10 names that are worthy of being protected.

Fabio
I don’t see him getting added.
Maybe, maybe, if he gets significant (successful) innings in the Cal League this year.
I guess somebody could really stash him back of the bullpen, a la the Fabio we did lose to Rule 5, but he just hasn’t had any sustained success as a pro in low-A even.

If they sign him to a ML deal, doesn’t he have to get added to the 40 right away? I can’t see us doing that mid-season.

yeah
Scheppers could easily be the Smoak of this year’s draft, with the added benefit of getting him at pick #44. 44! If the Rangers had taken him at #14 I’d have been intrigued (though skeptical). It is very possible that Scheppers ends up as being the 2nd best pitcher in this draft. Yeah yeah, it’s also possible that he gets injured and never makes it out of AA, but whatever. He may have the highest probability of failure of the major pitchers in this draft, but he may also have the highest probability of being a strong major league rotation piece of any of them.
