TR Sullivan on DeFazio
The Rangers used their 12th-round pick on catcher Vin DiFazio from the University of Alabama. He lost his uncle, also of the same name, in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. His uncle was his first baseball coach.
.
DeFazio then contracted a viral nerve disorder that limited his strength and mobility. It caused him to miss the entire 2007 season. He hit .329 in part-time action for the Tide this season. If he reclaims the form he showed while attending Indian River Community College, DeFazio could be an excellent pick.

Interesting to see someone drafted from Tally...
I don’t know anything about the local baseball scene, outside of FSU. But I did find this about Revell on the Tallahassee Democrat website…
Recent Florida High graduate Mike Revell found out he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the 16th round of the MLB Amateur Draft this afternoon — from his friends.
"I feel kind of lost in the process right now," Revell said. "It’s all just hitting me. I didn’t even know it until everybody started texting me."
Revell admitted he was a bit frustrated when he wasn’t selected in the first three rounds Tuesday night, so he decided to just go about his day as normal at home with his girlfriend.
"It came as a surprise for me, just getting (the news) from other people," Revell said. "I had to call the Rangers and ask them about it."
Revell was drafted 484th overall as a third baseman. He broke career records at Florida High with 32 home runs and 155 RBIs.

some interesting posts on Mendonca over at BBTIA and the conflicting reports on his D
The defense question is absurd, it truly is. Mendonca was hands down the most pro-ready third base prospect in the draft. While his power led him to become Fresno State’s all-time home run king, his glove is FAR better than his bat. That’s his No. 1 tool. If Baseball America says otherwise, they’re absurd too. http://bulldogbounce.blogspot.com/2009/06/ping-thats-sound-of-credibility-out.html
I’ve seen Mendonca play in person at Fresno State’s Beiden Field at least 60 times. Here’s a breakdown:
—Great power bat, should translate to wood well
—Top fielding third baseman in the nation
—Clutch hitter; always seems to come up with the home runs at the perfect time (see grand slam to tie the game at Sac State in regular season finale series)
—Struck out 99 times in sophomore year, but cut that number nearly in half as a junior
—Raised batting average as junior, raised home run total to 27 as junior
—When he reaches top speed, he might actually be Fresno State’s fastest runner (don’t believe the knock on speed; it’s just not usually a big part of his game)
For anyone who watched the CWS last season, you saw Mendonca’s glove make him the talk of the town. Every town. Search for some on youtube

whoops, i obviously cannot fomat, all of that was supposed to be quoted
That report from Baseball America was filed in the wake of Mendonca’s CWS Most Outstanding Player performance last season when he played the whole postseason with 2 dislocated fingers on his throwing hand. That is why his “squirt gun” wasn’t up to par. He literally had to use his whole body to make the throws around the diamond in Omaha due to his injury. Funny enough, it didn’t seem to have any bearing on his outstanding defense in the CWS as well as his production from the plate. That report is extremely old, I remember reading that a long time ago. It doesn’t matter if it was filed for their draft preview or whatever, the report was filed at the beginning of this season as it references a game against Loyola Marymount. Not exactly the most up to date.
You might want to actually do some of your own research into the players that the Rangers are drafting or at least get the most recent scouting reports from Baseball America. If you are going to form your opinions off old scouting reports, why don’t you just rely on Tanner Schepper’s scouting reports when he was injured? That would make a lot of sense. Not. Mendonca is the best defensive third basemen in the Rangers whole organization right now, in the minor leagues or major leagues. He is that good. If his arm is currently a squirt gun, then what does Michael Young have? A little league player’s arm?
obviously a little bit of impassioned speech, but if he’s right about that report, which i think he is, I do think we have a legitimate quality defensive 3b in our Org, something we desperately needed, especially after losing Metcalf. Hopefully his power bat comes along enough that he can make up for his strikeouts.
Anyways, I found those two posts from people who had seen him first hand pretty encouraging

Arms, arms, arms
I’ll be honest, I have never heard of most of the names on this list until today. But I’m glad to see the team placing such a heavy emphasis on pitching. As much as we love to think all of our current crop of prospects will pan out, the fact is that some inevitably won’t for whatever reason. And if by some miracle they all do become all-stars and we don’t need any more pitchers, the new draftees will make great trading chips to fill other needs. Other clubs will always need pitching
