my boy Andrew Clark

who i mentioned in yesterday’s thread, went in the 31st to the Cubs. He is a walk machine, but more than likely he tops out about where Jordan Brown did in the Indians system.

I am a little bummed they didn’t ever grab Diego Seastrunk from Rice, who went in the 31st also. I just like him as a player.

The fact that they are still taking HS kids on the third day makes me think they simply aren’t looking to sign very many from this draft class.

im still crossing my fingers for you know who....

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Scout to KG: On Sandoval: "Man, that fat [expletive]-er can hit."

wow, thats quite the tumble for Williams

i dont mind us taking shots at HS guys like this, very unlikely to sign, but definitely more likely to ever be a prospect than some fourth year college guy

BA's 119

REGGIE WILLIAMS JR., OF, BROOKS-DEBARTOLO COLLEGIATE HS, TAMPA

Williams’ father Reggie spent parts of four seasons in the major leagues with the Angels and Dodgers and played pro ball until 2001. The younger Williams has been a baseball enigma in some ways, as he didn’t play high school baseball as a sophomore and junior. Instead, he focused on playing for his father’s travel team, the Tampa-based Dawg Pound. This spring, he and his brother Jadamion (J.D.), a top 2010 prospect, suited up for Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate HS, a first-year charter school program in North Tampa founded by NFL linebacker Derrick Brooks and NFL ownership family the DeBartolos, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers. No matter where he played Williams’ speed and bloodlines attracted interest, as he committed to Miami. Long and athletic at 6-foot-4, 190 pounds, Williams is a switch-hitter with speed, rating as a 70 runner on the 20-80 scale for most scouts. He’s shown some 80 times as well such as running a 6.2-second 60, according to his high school coach, and 3.9-second times to first base. He led the state of Florida with 59 steals this spring in just 20 games while hitting .604. Williams’ bat will be the question, as he’s drawn some Gary Matthews Jr. comparisons both physically and in terms of his future potential. He hasn’t shown much present power despite being an older prep senior (he’ll turn 20 in the fall) as he hit only one home run this spring. The Yankees and Blue Jays worked Williams out this spring, and he even got hitting tips from Toronto manager Cito Gaston. Williams didn’t show up in Sebring, much to the disappointment of scouts on hand.

i had seen Dirkatron mention the A's tweet

but i had not put it together that they were the ones scrolling along the side of the draft. it is pretty awesome that they provide a quick comment on every kid they draft with info like “young for a college draftee, we think he could add velo”.

i found this on PG

from back when he committed to OSU

This year’s top "Out of State" prospect is RHP Chad Nading, a 6-5, 190 lb right handed pitcher from Anchorage, Alaska who has signed with West Coast power Oregon State. Nading is the most heralded baseball prospect to come out of Alaska in memory and his presence in Cedar Rapids this weekend is a testament to how serious he is about his baseball future. Nading is scheduled to pitch on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

he’s a big kid, if nothing else. he is only a sophomore due to his transferring around, so he’s got eligibility left.

JD basically said

in the article on the team’s website, that they are really only targeting kids who they believe have ML talent. I know teams say that every year, but this year i believe it. They seem to be drafting very few guys who will merely flesh out a roster.

PG Crosscheckers top 250 and some BA stuff....

1 Purke 7
1s Scheppers 3
2 Mendonca 96
3 Erlin 185
4 Doyle 119
5 Mc Bride N/A
6 Sierra 123
7 Lane N/A
8 Tullis 242
9 Blash 116
17 Paul Strong 152

BA writeups that weren’t there yesterday

5 Nicholas McBride
McBride, an East Carolina recruit, showed an average (87-90 mph) fastball and mid-70s slider at his best this spring, coupled with a projectable 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame.

7 Braxton Lane
Another athletic outfielder, Braxton Lane, had a down spring. He’s a 70 runner on the 20-80 scale and has committed to play football at Oregon. His father played football at Oregon State, and he’s the nephew of former NFL running back MacArthur Lane. He switch-hits and would fit the profile of a center fielder if he could hit, though he has a below-average arm. The scouting consensus was that Lane can’t hit enough to buy him out of his football commitment.

8 Braden Tullis
Skagit Valley righthander Braden Tullis flew way under the radar at Timberline High in Boise as a first baseman and closer. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Tullis is a great athlete who also played linebacker on his high school football team and ran the fastest 60-yard dash for Skagit Valley this year. His future is on the mound. On the season, Tullis went 4-0, 0.33 with 27 strikeouts and 11 walks, good enough to earn him NWAACC MVP honors. Tullis has a fastball that sits 88-91 mph with armside run and sink. He has a good feel for a changeup that could be a plus pitch down the line and is working on his breaking ball. He keeps everything down in the zone and throws all three pitches for strikes. The stuff isn’t exceptional, but he has good command and you know what you’re getting—which is a rarity in the Northwest this year.

9 Jabari Blash
Blash played some high school baseball in the Virgin Islands, enough to try to use baseball to go to college in the U.S. mainland. He attended Alcorn State for a year but wasn’t academically eligible, due to transcript issues. He redshirted that season, then wound up transferring to Miami-Dade JC, where he didn’t even earn a starting job when the season started. He’s quite raw and has holes in his swing, owing in part to his large 6-foot-5, 210-pound frame. He also has big-time tools, and several observers called him Florida’s best five-tool prospect. Blash has plus raw power, with 10 homers in just 102 at-bats this season, and above-average speed (he runs the 60 in 6.7 seconds) and throwing arm (it’s a right field arm, if not the cannon reported earlier this spring). Some scouts dream on Blash’s frame and see a future Jermaine Dye, who also was a JC player.

10 Thomas Lemke
Righthander Thomas Lemke stares down at hitters from atop the mound. He has a great pitcher’s frame at 6-foot-7 and 205 pounds, but has gone backward this season. Sitting at 89-92 mph in the fall, his fastball was down to 85-88 this spring. He doesn’t use his height well, and his fastball comes in flat. Scouts also question his passion and say he looks lethargic on the field. He’s reportedly asking for $500,000, so teams will likely let him head to Nebraska and check back in three years.

Shane Zagarac St Josephs college
The left-handed pitcher recently completed his senior season at St. Joseph’s College of Indiana where he went 5-4 with a 4.09 ERA in 11 starts for the Pumas. Zegarac led St. Joseph’s and was fifth in the GLVC in strikeouts with 72 in just 61.2 innings. A durable pitcher, Zegarac tossed three complete games with two shutouts.

oh no doubt

but a lot of times, we’ll draft four year college kids after round 20 or so and you basically know going in that they’ll probably never make it to AA ball. We’ve draft a lot of younger guys, HS or CC guys, who are a lot harder to peg this year. That’s all i was saying.

i love this years draft theory

right in line with how i like it. draft the highest ceiling guys regardless of round and pay them all, sign them all and screw the world, screw the yankees, screw the sawks, and most of all screw bud.

i just dont know why a club like Pitt doesnt just spend 30M on the draft one year and get every awesome guy in the draft. sign them all and do it a couple seasons in a row and you have a dynasty on your hands. i always hear MLB draft is a crap shoot, but if you spend big money throughout the draft its more of a sure thing than any1 can imagine

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

Pitt

actually was pretty smart this year. Mayo said that they had a great second day, drafting 21 guys who are all demanding 100k plus. They will reallocate the money they saved by drafting Sanchez in the first and sign much higher quality picks in rounds 5-20 or so.

We went the opposite route because we need less depth, so we are probably going to spend a huge percent on our top 2 picks (who happened to be top 10 talents) and then try to sign about 20-25 more guys if we can.

Certainly

the seniors will sign but I was only going on what Jason has confirmed with these kids. Gunter is interesting. As is the idea that Purke will sign for a reasonable amount because it’s the Rangers. That’s just cool if they can lock up Purke and Scheppers for six million or so then they can sign a lot of these late drafted kids.

I agree

offer him 2.1 and I think he’d have to jump. Purke gets his four million or so and the Rangers are happy. The players got paid and there should still be money left over for some of these later round picks.

Cole said they’re going to watch a couple of these guys in the Cape league. I have to imagine at least one or two will show good stuff and make them want to sign them. An extra $50k here or there saved from the first two picks can make a huge difference.

by Hull Fan on Jun 11, 2009 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I read

that he’d agreed to 1.85 when the Pirates said no because of his injury. If that’s the case he should be pretty signable. It’s hard to turn away from 2 million dollars, taking another chance that something happens with his arm. Not to mention losing yet another year of development and a step away from the major leagues.

Braxton Lane, 7th Round Pick

Considering his options

The family had hoped for Braxton to be taken somewhere in the top five rounds, so falling to the seventh was something of a disappointment.

"Yes and no," Carl Lane said. "You’re disappointed because he feels he’s the best athlete in the draft. I know he believes that, so from that standpoint he probably should have went earlier. But if that’s the road he takes, that’s fine. Now it’s about production, whether it’s at Oregon or with Texas, proving all this attention you got (was merited)."

As a Beaver, Carl Lane won’t actually utter the mascot of Braxton’s potential college destination: He spelled out D-U-C-K-S twice during a phone conversation today. But he said Braxton still follows the D-U-C-K-S, and still wears their apparel.

Still, the family doesn’t have a strong sense of whether Braxton will ever actually play for Oregon, or sign with the Rangers.

"You don’t know—with the economy the way it is, you want value," Carl Lane said. "If it’s not there (from Texas), we have our options to do something different."
