Nah
the rest of the division is hardly tearing it up, though the M’s have been better lately and the A’s went on a streak for a bit. This division is far from won but still very, very winnable. The Rangers need Hamilton to come back healthy but Francisco is the one that really worries me.

if we can’t produce enough runs to get Frankie Frank into meaningful situations, it’s all for not

I still haven't figured out if I can dismiss
the Oakland A’s.
Last year was an exception (besides that team wasn’t good) but Beane’s good teams usually scuffle and then hit their stride starting right about now.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
pros and cons to that theory
These are definitely not the Hudson-Mulder-Zito A’s, they are not going to win that many games. However, they may not need to if the other weak AL West teams falter. All 4 teams have big question marks, but I see little reason to think the A’s will play something like .600+ ball the rest of the way. If the Rangers play .500 ball the rest of the way the A’s would need to go 60-44 to win the West. The Angels are a much bigger threat, and even the M’s have a better chance in my mind.

A's
First, they aren’t very good. Second, they have been ravaged by injuries sapping the little depth they had. Third, they will probably trade Holliday in the next month. I don’t think they are much of a threat unless they play a lot of games against Baltimore.
The scary thing with the A's
is that young teams can turn on a dime and come in a hurry.
I’m going to stay safely on the fence and not predict that the A’s will see success in 2009 but I’m leery of them.

Young teams
like the Rangers? I’m not going to discount the A’s until I see the decaying corpse, but the Rangers also have a lot of young talent and every reason to succeed that the A’s do.

Nelson Cruz is still defining what he is but with the exceptions of Kinsler, Salty, Crush and Tiny E, the Rangers pretty much are what they are.
Kinsler keeps coming and is on the brink of true stardom.
Salty is better defensively but he sucks as a hitter and that obp makes me think nothing’s changing this year.
Ditto Crush, only his obp is much worse. How the fuck does Washington think this team will get better if their 1B has an obp below .260?!?!?!
Tiny E keeps fooling me but I’m hesistant to say he’ll get better this year and will hope/settle for the status quo. I do think Tiny E takes mammoth steps towards possible greatness in the next couple years because 20 year olds simply don’t do what he’s doing.

*cough* bitch *cough, cough* tits ???
I’m a little surprised that one gets under your skin so bad. Usually I read your posts and think that we have a similar way of looking at things, but I guess that particular person tends to polarize us differently.
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
Why
are the Rangers young players “pretty much what they are” while you seem to think the A’s young players have more room for growth? And what on earth makes you think Washington thinks this team gets better if their 1B continues to have that OBP? Why would he think that? Do you really think Wash doesn’t realize Davis is struggling and they need more for him?
You didn’t mention Holland, who obviously has room to improve his performance; Hamilton, who hasn’t been healthy or anything close to what he was last year yet; Harrison, Feldman, Feliz might come up and help the pen at some point…
The Rangers can go toe to toe with the A’s on young talent, oh jaded one. And the A’s are pretty much “what they are” in many ways, too. Crosby? Chavez? A rotation full of Hollands in terms of age, talent and experience.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
My bad on not mentioning Holland.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
That'd be true if the A's were truly a young team,
however with an infield of Kennedy, Cabrera, and Giambi, I don’t see much in the way of improvement there.
I think you're right about upside
The Rangers and the Angels still probably have the best teams structured to go on something like a 20-8 run while the rest of the division is floundering, allowing them to pull away. My worry is that the Rangers would have to do that with consistency from their offense, which just hasn’t been there this year.
I guess the M’s could get hot like that over a short burst, but I can’t see them sustaining it for long enough to put both LAA and Texas away. And I definitely don’t see the A’s doing it. They just aren’t that good a team.
Go Rice Owls!
Angel's face Price in Tampa Bay tonight.
Santana pitches for LAA, whose last start was great against Detroit. He went 8.2inn gave up 1 earned w 6K and 2BB.
It's all about Frankie
He’s the rock on which or bullpen rests. If he’s out for an extended period of time, or is consistently back and forth in and out of commission, the pen will get over extended and the leads our starters have been able to accumulate will really begin to be threatened.
Sometimes
I wonder about all the Billy Beane worship. Its been a while since they were good and thats in a weak division. Mostly it just seems like at some point every year he says we dont have what it takes to win it all and so we will look to the future. He trades a bunch of players for prospects and every one talks about what a heist he made and look out for the A’s in the future. Then the next year he does it again and the next year again.
Half the pitchers in MLB seem to have come from the A’s organization and the other half seem to come from the Rangers system. We could all agree that the Rangers were messing up in the past and hopefully we are not doing that anymore. I’m not sure what the A’s excuse is
I know he wrote a book that makes the saber enthusiast all horny and all but at some point the results should show up on the field
i agree
he got nothing for harden. although brett anderson is solid, the rest of the players he got for haren are pretty meh. and i have always though his theory regarding jeremy brown was hilarious. he makes it sound like a steal to get brown in the first round for cheap when he could have had him in the 10th round for cheaper. and having seen jeremy brown play on numerous occasions, he does absolutely nothing that could ever contribute to a winning team.
One more time...
Billy Beane did not write Moneyball.

getting scarier
but still nice to be up there.
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."
interesting rumors over at
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
The Phillies are “hunting quietly” for right-handed outfielders. Ryan Spilborghs is on their radar.
What happened to JMJ?
One official said Dan O’Dowd would consider moving “anyone” on the Rockies.
The Rangers are believed to be watching Huston Street closely.
If Frankie keeps having shoulder issues would Street be an option? I’d think BGL would be pissed if they brought him in as a closer. Brad Hawpe?
The Angels seem willing to listen on Mike Napoli, Jeff Mathis and their entire infield, which consists of Kendry Morales, Howie Kendrick, Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins.
They appear to have interest in young, high-upside pitchers, which could mean they’re unsure they’ll re-sign John Lackey after the season.
The Angels are getting old fast and their young players are not picking up the slack.

That'd be nuts
if the Angels started selling off pieces.
Boy has Howie Kendrick disappointed.

Huston Steet
I hope that’s not the reliever target that JD has set his sights on. That guy just doesn’t inspire any confidence in me.

Heath Bell or Chad Qualls would be my first choices.

I think Qualls
has some injury issues right now, doesn’t he? He had a “sore forarm” and “wasn’t available to pitch” last week. Sounds like Francisco.

Not to the level that his ERA would indicate
Dude has been really unlucky (.376 BABIP). He doesn’t walk many, throws a lot of strikes, gets a ton of ground balls. Doesn’t get a whole lot of swing and misses, but not too terrible. Mostly we may be able to get him without giving up much because of his contract. Not a bullpen ace, but should be solidly above average.
We have our Benson replacement!
