Why?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Because the Rangers
have very little major league ready depth. Seeing TheAsianKid in the rotation should have explained the why question.
Its the same reason the Rangers signed Benson to an NRI this year.

Yeah...
I know it’s derivation, I just think it’s dumb. It’s like, “Let’s call Andrus ‘white boy’, because y’know the most famous Elvis was white” Just doesn’t make sense, doesnt fit the person as a nickname should.

Bad pitcher
deserves a bad nickname.

He's lucky that he even gets a nickname
poor souls like Benson just get an adjective, like “DFA”
Now Mathis is going to lose his number
Jason Grilli was recently dealt to the Rangers and now he’s working on a deal of his own. According to his Twitter, Grilli plans to exchange “cash or an item to be named later” for number 49.
but he might get paid

Hernandez is done.
I don’t see him ever helping the major league team. The starts that would potentially be given to him would be better served giving to Hunter/Moscoso/Nippert…hell, give pirate a few starts.

He's Old...
And likely older than everyone thinks.

Yay!
We have our Benson replacement!

Face off
Would you rather see El Duque or The Asian Kid?
They both suck.
I think JD’s doing this to spite all the "when we gon’ get sum pitchin’ in here" idiots.

Suck off
Would you rather see El Duque or The Asian Kid?
I'd rather not have either around me in a suck off

Why did this make me cry?
Something about the progression of this thread, good grief…

Well it's not like we just signed someone good to a contract...
A most likely crap pitcher being signed deserves a mostly crap thread :)

No
I’d rather not have either around me in a suck off
In a totally juvenile way this made me completely crack up. Anyway, carry on…

probably El Duque
but if you can have both in the system for no real cost, why not?

What's the average age of the AAA rotation now?
Benson is 34. El Duke is 43. lol
Other news
I don’t know if this has been posted anywhere else but Stark says the Rangers are also heavily scouting Huston Street.
Why not Paul Byrd?

Wow
Kinda sounds like he screwed himself…

I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Byrd, stats weren't bad last year.
4.60 in the AL, I could live with that on the back end of our rotation.
I thought it be all warm and shitty, but it just tasted like normal beer. It was still cold.
He is a perfect filler til Sheets is ready
Also, never heard of him being linked to Rangers before, amazing they got him compared to one of the NY teams getting him. El Duke at 39 or 43 is better than Benson. He was never a stuff guy, more about deception, which can play at 40 something.
There is nothing wrong with this.
Its one of those signings that if it works out, then you have a serviceable starter and if it doesnt, what have you lost? Why not take the chance?
Elvis has "shook up" Arlington!!
Ha!
I was pushing this on multiple threads during the offseason when i read on MLBTR that he wanted to return, but I figured he gave up the ghost when he hadn’t signed by the time the season started. He has remained effective even in old age, but he just can’t stay healthy.
As with any low risk/X reward scenario, I’m for it! Make me proud, El Duque!
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
yay
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."
Imagine a rotation at AAA of...
Kris Benson
Orlando Hernandez
Pedro Martinez
Tom Glavine
Think we could coax Greg Maddux out of retirement to join that group?

i love it

There should be more credibility than some 42-year-old blogger typing in his mother's basement."
There are 2 guys who have had decent success at this level that I've never wanted on this team...
Orlando Hernandez and Jose Contreras.
well, hell...
WS here we come….
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
My thoughts:
… why?
If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339
because it doesn't cost anything
and he might be pretty good.
Wouldn’t you say there is a decent chance that he is at least better than Luis Mendoza or Doug Mathis? As we’ve seen those guys are just an injury or two away from being on the staff, why not grab a free insurance policy when you have the chance?
"He's old school in that he give up his groin like that. It hurt me when he do that" -- Worsh on Chris Davis' stretch at first base to end the game vs. the Angels on 5/16
Eh, I guess.
Can’t be any worse than Kris Benson.

he hasnt pitched in the majors since 2007 for a reason
im pretty sure its b/c many teams didnt agree that there is a decent chance that he is at least better than Luis Mendoza or Doug Mathis

You guys are mostly aghast
but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if he is pretty good out of the bullpen. I don’t really want to see him get starts, but out of the bullpen he’d probably be a decent long or middle guy.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
I don't love it
But only because I remember him when he was a damn good pitcher for NY. How I hated those Yankee teams…
That was my thought as well
Could be much more of a help just by playing around with Feliz on off days and showing him different breaking pitches and explaining the art of pitching. Kinda like an Latin American Nolan for his to work under
