Around SBN: Penn State Recruiting Roundup Is Set For A Big Junior Day

Minors 6/11

C - Perez/Brigham tag team combo of doom (!!!!!!)

  • Perez got knocked around in the 4th, ending up with a line of 3.2/3/6/3/5/3.
  • Brigham was decent enough though, pitching the last three innings for a line of 3/4/1/1/1/3.

BAK - Gomez at 9pm cst.

  • Typical mystifying Beltre night.  No hits, but a walk (!?), an error and two steals.
  • Gomez got his fair share of K's, but between his horrific defense and SF's ridiculous A+ team, his numbers aren't too great.  6/8/7/4/2/8.

FRS - Harrison Rehab start (!!!)

  • Harrison:  4/3/1/1/3/1.  Not too impressive, although he put up a strong 9:2 GB:FB ratio.
  • Tim Smith went 2/4 with a double.
  • Whittleman:  Golden sombrero.  Assuming he signs, Mendonca is basically our best 3B prospect already.

OKC - FELIZ WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Feliz ran into trouble in the 3rd, giving up 4.  Someone also stole home off of him.  However, he only walked one and only needed 72 pitches to get through 5.  Positives!
  • Max went 2/3 with a BB and a 2B.  Please start playing well so you can bolster a trade package.
  • Mendoza's been horrific as a reliever in his latest stint for the Redhawks.  Gave up 4 runs in an inning tonight.

Shroom's obligatory props for being awesome.

That boat has sailed long ago. The kid just isn’t very good. I’m in the same position with West though. He’s still got time but nothing with his bat says he’s got what it takes.

This was probably mentioned somewhere

but Frisco has Beavan scheduled to start on the 15th. They have their rotation listed as Harrison/Hyatt, Kirkman, Kiker, Roark Beavan. OKC lists theirs as Feliz, Hunter, Rupe, ?, ?

Today's updates

haven’t filled in all of the spots yet. OKC has Elizardo Ramirez going in the #4 slot and TBA in the #5. Frisco has a TBA in the spot in which Harrison and Hyatt pitched last night. I’m sure that there will be jockeying at least at the MLB and AAA levels when Harrison goes back in for his next turn, Moscoso being bumped down to OKC, stuff like that. I would figure that Frisco just has to pick from among guys on their roster, though.

no offense

i am starting to get a little worried about the position players in our farm system. can you name five guys who are really worth getting excited about? Smoak, Borbon, post-injury Max, and I guess Moreland and Bianucci. Lemon and Tim Smith and Vallejo might be a tier below them, and Beltre still has to be in the mix because of his age. Still, it really seems like a weakness in our system, and this draft certainly didn’t address it. We better hope some of these young Latin position players start to develop.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

by clark on Jun 11, 2009 11:11 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think that Vallejo is a tier below

Moreland and Bianucci, for what it’s worth. Agreed though, there are a lot of position player gaps at the moment.

Position prospects

There’s a lot of room for debate as to whether all these guys are legit prospects but…

OF – Borbon, Boggs, Golston, Beltre, Moreland, Tim Smith, Bianucci,

SS – Garcia, Arias, Duran

2B – Vallejo, Lemon

1st – Smoak, Murphy, Ortiz

C – Max, Pina,

Plus all the latin kids I know nothing about that are hiding out in Extended.

Is the list impressive? Not really but the roster is getting younger and a pitcher like Poveda or Kiker can always be flipped for a bat if needed. I think the comment JD made to Durrett that I posted about the dirth of position players in this draft certainly showed in their choices. Still if they sign some of those toolsy outfielders plus a couple of the higher dollar guys like Revell they’ll be okay. Especially if they do well with some of the Latin position prospects they’re supposedly attempting to sign.

by Hull Fan on Jun 11, 2009 11:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Catcher

Add Macumba (L. de los Santos) to that list.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Jun 11, 2009 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I kept thinking

de los Santos was a pitcher. So noted t ball.

And how bout this for a theory. JD has a history of getting a young kid, Beltre, Pasiano, Melo added onto trades. Instead of focusing on young pitchers I expect a few position players to start coming back when a catcher is dealt, along with one of Smoak/Davis. Mitch Moreland is trying to convince me he’s for real as the DH starting Sept. 2010 so dealing Davis won’t bother me.

by Hull Fan on Jun 12, 2009 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

There are two de los Santoses

Miguel is a pitcher, Leonel is a catcher.

Yes I knew of him but didn't include any of the Latin guys.

I know there are a couple of kids in extended but beyond Telis knew nothing about them. Are we going to get a Spokane/AZL primer when rosters are announced? Especially all those latin kids that I know you know about.

You also have to look at the majors

C – Salty/Teagarden
1B-Davis
2B-Kinsler
SS-Andrus
3B-Young
OF-Hamilton/Cruz

Pretty much all of our positions have long-term solutions. So is it bad that we don’t have premium hitting prospects besides Smoak? If anything, I rather have great fielding prospects to help out all of our premium pitchers out. Great defense can go a long way in developing their skills and mental part of the game.

by Coolbean04 on Jun 12, 2009 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

No offense.

Bit I think system depth is overrated.

Having great prospects at every single position looks great on paper and all, but as long as we have good players coming up that’s all that matters.

Other holes can be patched together through trades and signings.

I’d much rather have 15 good pitching prospects and 5 good position prospects than an even split.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

Chris Davis will be fine. Relax.

by thedirkatron on Jun 12, 2009 1:46 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not sure that pitching is overvalued in the current market, but...

It appears that the Rangers may believe that is the case. The Rangers are pulling ahead in the arms race, and if they sign Purke, Scheppers and only 1 out of 3 of the other guys they drafted, you can probably say they’ve got a comfortable lead over everyone else.

Guys like Buchholz, Hughes, and Kershaw are essentially priceless. The only real counter-example is that Edwin Jackson was given away for Matt Joyce.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 12, 2009 3:42 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a good take

on the current value of top pitching prospects.

G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....

by t ball on Jun 12, 2009 9:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Having great prospects at every single position looks great on paper and all, but as long as we have good players coming up that’s all that matters.

Lots of truth to that. There is a component for position prospect development where quantity is a plus. You’re more likely to find a Rusty Greer or Max Ramirez if you strive for positional depth, but I’m not sure that you’re that much more likely, because, for one thing, position prospects are more predictable than pitching prospects and don’t see the same kind of attrition due to serious injuries. When it comes to position prospects I’d take a handful of Justin Smoaks, Buster Poseys and Elvis Andruses than a whole slew of Marcus Lemons, Mitch Morelands and Jose Vallejos.

I’d much rather have 15 good pitching prospects and 5 good position prospects than an even split.

In a vacuum I’d probably prefer that as well, but the downside is that you are less likely to have as many good players. There is definitely a trade-off that could change that dynamic, depending on what sort of shape your organization is in. If I’m the Giants or A’s, for example, I might not mind being closer to even right now. Given their park and everything, the Rangers will probably almost always benefit from having more good pitching prospects, though.

Unless someone like Tatusko
