Years ago

before I became a cop I was a sports reporter at a small West Texas TV station and I got to go to Cowboys camp when it was in San Antonio. Bill Parcells hilariously destroyed Renner in the daily press conference…needless to say, it was really easy to not be “that guy” when Renner was around.

So

a pretty rangey play, but gloved and thrown pretty routinely.

by shroomer on Jun 11, 2009 10:12 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah

like i said, really hard to tell if it is rangey or not. The eyes deceive me a little – hardly looked like he went over there with any effort, but he was on or on on the other side of 2nd base. don’t think he was playing over that direction any more than usual

You do realize that Elvis is in contention for ROTY, solely because of his incredible defense. He’s WAY better than MY ever was at SS, and has saved an incredible amount of hits and runs this season. Plus, HE’S 20!!!!!!!!!!!! I just——-you know what. Forget it.

I’m not going to argue with someone over whether Elvis Andrus is good defensively or not.

You forgot to mention the part where Elvis Andrus leads all AL SS's in UZR

His 6.0 is almost a full run better than Marco Scutaro’s 5.1.

And to give a measuring stick as to how good they’ve both been, third place is Alexi Ramirez at 2.5. Everyone else is 1.5 and below.

So, to conclude, not only is Elvis Andrus better than MY at short, he has been a fucking greek god of defense there this year.

I live in that general area

and it’s nicer than many believe…definitely not as fun as Austin, but as far as Oklahoma goes, it’s terrific. And it’s a good academic school, as much as a Texan born and bred hates to admit that there are good things about o.u. If my son goes there (in 17 years), I think it’d be good (except for 12 Saturdays in the fall, of course).

OU has a great medical school also

Look I grew up in Oklahoma and I moved because there is nothing there for me outside of my family. I got a college education there and it is nice for the small town. Football playes go there because of tradition.

but i could give 2 shits how many extra base hits he has. i want him to quit swinging at 1st pitches and not working counts and not making pitchers pitch to him and throw a bunch of pitches.

if your leadoff hitter isnt making the pitcher throw lotsa pitches, he isnt doing his job. right now, he is a #6 hitter pretending to be a leadoff hitter.

Messi v. Cristiano Ronaldo in the CL was like that maybe moreso

only both are under 24, it was like if labron and koby were peers, which they really arent since koby is a good bit older.

What's wrong with our farm teams?

Shouldn’t the best farm system on the planet be dominating their leagues? Anyone else concerned about Feliz, Main, and Kiker?

II Cor. 4:17-18

by TedFord on Jun 11, 2009 11:19 PM CDT reply actions

Kiker has been fine

Feliz in 20 in a 22-24 yr old’s league.

Main, I’m worried about him.

by jdh90 on Jun 11, 2009 11:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep.

Getting kicked around some by the CAL league is to be expected, but walking 6 per 9 is not. FWIW, he’s got a BABIP of .362 and his FIP is over a full run below his ERA… but yeah, I am kind of worried.

Main

if there were one of our high ceiling arms I would be trying to trade, it’d be him.

After he ups his value of course. I just don’t see him putting it together. Hopefully he puts together a nice 2nd half this year, and then ups his value by next trade deadline.

by Jayslick on Jun 12, 2009 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Not really

That’s kind of unfair, don’t you think? At least Main still has a shot at turning things around and living up to some of his hype. Drew Myer never really did.

yeah ur right, but...

i just cant shake the feeling that we passed up something really special and played it safe. its why i was so pleased with this years draft, i think this years draft shows JD & Co. learned their lesson on that one, but watching that kid dominate makes me wanna cry.

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

by Jayslick on Jun 12, 2009 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I can see that

But there was a lot of signability risk with Porcello, IIRC. And at the time, we didn’t have the depth of having guys like Main in the system already, which is kind of what allowed us to roll the dice a bit with Purke and Schepps this year. So I can’t really argue too much with the Main pick, myself.

i just hate that argument

the concept that its better to “know” ur gonna get rusty greer or “know” your gonna get roger pavlik, so you pass on potentially getting dwight gooden is about as dumb a concept as you can get in my book. i think thats why teams end up with systems like we had, and not system we have currently. i dont think a separate other 18 year old prep pitcher with less upside is in any way remotely “safer” than popping the guy with the biggest upside and just nutting up and making the commitment to the better kid. teams that arent willing to nut up in that situation are generally losing teams that will continue losing

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

by Jayslick on Jun 12, 2009 12:40 AM CDT up reply actions

Well it's not just Main vs Porcello

It’s Porcello vs. the five other guys they drafted. How much of a huge money difference is Porcello beyond the four other guys?

That’s your choice. The Rangers chose to play several rather than one.

This year they choose to pay two rather than several. Sometimes that’s a good strategy sometimes it’s not.

by Hull Fan on Jun 12, 2009 12:46 AM CDT up reply actions

you know you can sign the porcello last so that the others arent pissed and want above slot after you have given the guy his huge above slot check

if you dont make it a standard draft procedure you’ll be ok and it wont come back to haunt you.

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

by Jayslick on Jun 12, 2009 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

except they had a budget

you can’t give Porcello that kind of money then give Beavan his. Main his. N Ramirez his and the like.

by Hull Fan on Jun 12, 2009 1:01 AM CDT up reply actions

how much money do you think this club or any club makes if they are a contender or even a playoff team?

the answer is a lot more money than all the guys you listed made in signing bonuses combined. you dont pass on superstar potential to save 5M bucks or even 10M bucks. if you do, you get everything you deserve.

mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.

by Jayslick on Jun 12, 2009 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Jay you aren't this dense.

In a perfect world JD can pay to sign everyone. But the reality is Hicks has a budget. Even now with this draft there’s a limit as to what they’ll spend. Just like in Latin America. If you go and throw money at Porcello is Martin Perez a Ranger?

JD isn’t going to throw mad money at everyone. It won’t happen ever. Heck not even the Red Sox and Yankees do that. So again I’ll ask, do you want Porcello and a bunch of over draft cheap slot players early in that draft class or do you want what the Rangers did. Looking at Porcello now it seems they messed up.

The good thing is that they seemed to have learned this lesson and will now show Purke and Scheppers the money.

Max, heard you on the radio last night. Playing some David Axelrod.

Props.

Got my first taste of Sounds of Animals Fighting. Good lord, those vocals sucked. The music was awesome, just too annoyed with that singer. Too nasaly, didn’t compliment the track and it reminded me too much of the Mars Volta.

Explosions In The Sky was dope.

Thanks man

I gotta give you the credit for turning me onto Axelrod. That whole album is tasty.

Sound of Animals Fighting can be a love/hate with many. Their concepts are really cool though, and I’m a big Anthony Green fan.

I play Explosions almost every night; they’re too good not to play whenever possible.

yay team!

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."
