Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

If you guys didn't already hear this...
ARLINGTON — The Rangers signed six Draft picks from this week’s First-Year Player Draft, including outfielder Ruben Sierra Jr.

Sierra Jr., the team’s sixth-round pick, signed two days after being picked during Wednesday’s portion of the Draft. He is the son of Ruben Sierra, who signed with the Rangers in 1982 as a free agent out of Puerto Rico and played parts of 10 seasons in Texas.

Sierra Jr., who played for San Juan Educational School, is a 6-foot-2, 172-pound center fielder who may eventually shift to a corner-outfield spot, where his father played. Sierra Jr. possesses a powerful arm, much like his father. His fastball has been clocked in the low 90s.

The Rangers also signed catcher Vincent DiFazio (12), right-handed pitcher Sam Brown (22), shortstop Danny Lima (23), shortstop Shon Landry (30) and third baseman Taylor Vail (40).

He is down to an .872 OPS for the season.

It’s interesting to me that so many folks are worried about Kinsler’s slump, but the fact that Young is .284/.321/.392 over his last 25 games has sort of gone under the radar…

by Snark on Jun 12, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions

how does that compare to Kinsler over the last 25?

I can handle a slump like that. The power is the only thing really struggling.

Oh, Kinsler's been pretty terrible:

.186/.307/.423

but it’s not that much worse than Young… (better OPS, but worse OBP, which ain’t what you want to see from your lead-off guy, eh?)

Well, at least Byrd actually got a hit with the first pitch.

Most of them.

Okay I had no internet at work

today so I was bored. I spent most of the afternoon putting together a list of our draft picks with some quotes and comments about who is likely to sign. It’s six pages in wpd. Is there interest in making it a fanshot? It’s a nice guide for me but I figured others would appreciate it as well.

Yes, No, Maybe?
