I went through season 1 just recently

It’s okay I guess. Extremely slow for about the first half of the season IMO, though they make up for it by showing plenty of tits.

Really the best thing about it is the theme song. “Bad Things” by Jace Everett is shooting toward my iPod’s 25 most played list.

It's basically a TV version of a drugstore romance novel

In fact, I think it actually is based on a series of novels.

It is based on a series of novels.

And I don’t know what the fuck kind of drugstore romance novels you read, but it involves lots of vampires and supernatural shit. Yes, most vampire-related fiction is heavily romance influenced, but don’t reduce a good TV show into something petty and stupid like a romance novel.

The first few episodes...

I was embarrassed to be watching it. But the boobs kept bringing me back, and the show grew on me. I’m now quite looking forward to the new season.

Also: Anna Paquin’s boobs!

They were great;

Amy’s were amazing.

And yes, a very good show that is embarrassing to admit that you watch, until you realize that 50% of the people around you have seen it, loved it, and are just as embarrassed.

the problem with Amy is that everybody knew someone like that in whatever college town they lived in. Man, she was a beating. With a great rack.

Anna Paquin

According to a couple of the reviews I’ve read for tonight’s show, we’re gonna get to see a whole lot of Anna Paquin in this first episode. In a good way.

It’s not as good as Six Feet Under, but it’s still pretty entertaining. I just hope Lafayette’s not dead!

Make an example of Davis.

Sit him. Jones at 1st.

Tolerating a .200 hitter about to smash the MLB record for strikeouts in a season sends a terrible message.

He sucks the life out of the bottom 3rd of the lineup.

by Texas_Dawg on Jun 13, 2009 11:21 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Good plan

Clearly, the reason Davis and the rest of hte lineup are struggling is because they don’t care enough. You need to make an example of someone. Particularly someone who has actually hit pretty decently the last 10 games.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 13, 2009 11:23 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is a joke and a total rally killer.

Jones at 1st.

The difference in their defense has been greatly overstated by the Davis apologists.

by Texas_Dawg on Jun 13, 2009 11:27 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is a joke and a total rally killer?

Come on. He’s a 23 year old who has been hitting over his last 10 games.

The difference between him and Blalock at 1B (because Blalock would play there, not Jones, if you sent Davis down) is probably 20-30 runs over a full season.

That’s not insignificant. And it isn’t as if Blalock has been lighting it up with the bat, anyway.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 13, 2009 11:35 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...

you got to send a message. And the way you send a message is to bench the rookie when he finally starts heating up.

by benmor78 on Jun 13, 2009 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Heating up?

It’s only heating up because of how awful he was beforehand. And it’s been over a very small number of ABs.

And I’d be willing to bet Blalock or Jones would net out to more runs (defense/offense) in our favor over the year.

by Texas_Dawg on Jun 13, 2009 11:41 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

.320 over the last 10 games, no?

That would be heating up for just about everybody in the lineup.

I just think its a little silly for the administrator of a site to complain about something he is literally the only person who has the ability to control. Theres no moderating knee-jerking (which I clearly don’t think needs to be), but much of the rest could be shut down in a heart beat.

And I can’t run both the gameday threads and the MLB.com media player in FF without my comp slowing to a crawl once the threads get past 200 comments or so. I have to use Opera during the games, which means no troll script.

Plus theres lots of people on here who don’t use firefox in the first place.

Racism

I can’t point to much direct racism of late, but it does seem like it’s sort of right underneath the surface. Mainly with Jewish comments…maybe those just stick out more to me.

That could get pretty ugly and embarrassing.

A lot of the stuff in the GDTs is just total nonsense. It does seem they’ve gotten worse over the last two years but for some reason it amuses me lately. Seems to be a lot of groupthink going on. I guess it’s kind of interesting from psychological point of view. Most of what’s on there is people being light hearted and funny, though sometimes pretty coarse.

Well I think oc is an earnest and intelligent guy who adds a lot around here. Just because his every post isn’t a recap of Player X’s randomly-inserted-advanced-statistic doesn’t mean he’s not contributing.

I agree, OC can add a lot to the discussion when he wants to

But in my dealings with I’ve learned that if he doesn’t like you, he’ll try and drive you crazy with his abrasive/dismissive schtick. And I know how tiring that can get.

But at the same time, you do have to learn to deal with him or ignore him at some point. Which is the point you’ve tried to drive home to Micah in the past, I have to admit (just perhaps not in the most ideal fashion).

Game Day threads

Immediate reaction isn’t the same as talk away from the ongoing action. I seldom comment until after a game, almost never during one. Not that I’m not interested in commentary, since I am. Scanning GDT’s later lets me pick out informative stuff and slide past any yips and yaps. And either watch or attend the game at my own leisure.

Reminds me of a conversation 20+ years ago with a younger co-worker. He asked “When do boys stop having temper tantrums?” knowing my kids were about 10 years older than his own. I replied “Let’s see – Chris is 23 now ………. ask me again when he’s 50”.

I think you are right here

and maybe part of why last night’s GDT irritated me so much is because we skipped the game and I was in the GDT “live”. Usually I do the same thing – go to the game, then read the GDTs later. It’s much easier to scroll on past things after the fact.

Ranger offense WAR numbers so far this year...

Cruz: 2.9
Kinsler: 2.6
Andrus: 1.4
Young: 1.0
Hamilton: 0.9
Vizquel: 0.7
Jones: 0.6
Blalock: 0.5
Murphy: 0.4

Davis: -0.2

I think everyone is aware...

…that Davis hasn’t hit this year.

The question is, does it make sense - in the short or long-term — to send him down so that Hank Blalock can play first base every day and Andruw Jones can DH every day.

Basically, you are replacing Davis against lefties with Blalock — who is worse against lefties than Davis is — and against righties with Jones — who hasn’t hit well the past six weeks after a red-hot start. And you are getting a significant defensive downgrade at first base, as well.

You have a questionable short-term gain, while potentially screwing up your long-term plan by sending down the guy who people thought this offseason should be our starting 1B for the next 10-15 years.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 13, 2009 11:58 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And you are getting a significant defensive downgrade at first base, as well.

I disagree. His defense is good… but it’s first base. Jones/Blalock would not be that much worse.

You have a questionable short-term gain, while potentially screwing up your long-term plan

If he’s really that good, then going down to AAA to figure out whatever his problem is should not be any big deal… and should help him get back on track even faster.

by Texas_Dawg on Jun 14, 2009 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rudy, Washington, et al disagree

They think he’ll get on track faster in the big leagues. This has been addressed at some length of late.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 14, 2009 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is not a questionable short term gain by playing Blalock over Crush.

Crush right now is the equivalent to Doug Mientciewicz (sp?) in a slump plus he’s drowning and this team is in a pennant race (although it’s early). Crush has a good future but he’s killing the team right now with his bat.

Everybody with a brain knows you can’t rock every day with a 1B who has an obp hovering around .260.

Blalock is an established major leaguer in a contract year. To say he’s not going to eventually get to a .330+ OBP is just dumb. Play him every day the rest of the year and he’ll give you an OPS of .850-.900 with acceptable defense.

Benching him the day after he goes yard is just stupid, especially when the alternative is Davis.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

by Josey Wales on Jun 14, 2009 12:08 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You've been saying for some time he's going to have a .330+ OBP

And yet, he’s still sitting there with an OBP below .300.

I don’t have a ton of confidence that Blalock is going to hit significantly better the rest of the way than Davis.

Particularly against lefties, given that Blalock is already playing every day against righthanders.

Which makes the Blalock argument such a red herring…you act like Davis is forcing Blalock to sit, but Blalock is playing against every righthander. He sits against lefties, who he has been terrible against this year, and has been terrible against his whole career.

The argument for sitting Davis is that Andruw Jones is better than him against RHPs.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 14, 2009 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

AJM

Blalock’s obp has jumped close to 30 points in the last 2-3 weeks and he’s also had several good ab’s where he’s lined out (twice to Jeter in NY and once to VWells this week).

He is much more of a given than CDavis.

CDavis, right now is flat-out awful. He got a hit tonight but that was home cooking and surely you weren’t fooled by that. Then he strikes out twice and hits a wet newspaper to CF.

It is the SOS with him every freaking night. He wasn’t worth a fuck in spring training and 2.5 months into this season his obp hovers around .260.

Einar Fucking Diaz laughs at pussies with obp’s below .260.

"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."

Blalock against LHPs this year

.200/.216/.340

Blalock against LHPs in his career:

.229/.282/.369

This false dichotomy between Blalock and Davis is crap, because Blalock is playing everyday against RHPs, and he’s sitting against LHPs, which is as it should be.

If you want to sit Davis, you need to find a righthanded hitting first baseman to platoon with Blalock and you let Jones DH every day. Or you find an everyday 1B to replace Davis and retain the Blalock and Jones platoon at DH.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 14, 2009 12:19 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Adam

the current plan employed by Wash (giving all those pa’s to Davis & Salty) sucks. Unless the rest of the line-up is hitting, we can’t overcome the Black Hole.

Blalock has 50 ab’s v leftys this year. Last year when given 92 pa’s v. leftys his obp was .337.

We know he is capable of hitting v leftys but his season has been stop-start and he’s not being allowed to play every day.

We don’t know that Crush can make adjustments to a league that has clearly made adjustments to him.

Adam Dunn power with less walks and a better batting average

I have no idea

why you think he would have a better batting average than Dunn. I’d guess it’d be more like comparable BAs, much less walks, although I can see similar power.

You raise an interesting point

That was the comp thrown around last year, as Davis’ rookie average was 40 points higher than Dunn’s major league career average. However, I just looked it up and Dunn was a career .304 hitter in the minors while Davis minor league average stands at .302. So based on what we’ve seen this year, Dunn’s major league average may not be such a bad comp for Davis’ after all.

I think if you look at Dunn

who is roughly 250/380/520 and convert that OPB to 310-320 or so, thats about the best case for Davis.

Although, I suspect he will have trouble sustaining that. Dunn’s ability to draw walks forces pitchers to throw decent pitches at him. I think Chris’s High Ks and mediocre walks mean that pitchers aren’t going to be real aggressive at throwing strikes to him. I think its tough to maintain a 500+ slugging without a high average or high obp.

I think its damn tough

to get an average in the 300s with a 30%+ strikeout rate. Lets say you are like CD, and have a 6% HR rate, and a 7% walk rate.

You figure he will have a BABIP of around .300 on his 57% remaining PA. Thats .171 AVG* from balls in Play, + .060* AVG* for HRs, or .231 AVG* based on PA, adjusting to ABs is .231/(1-.07) = .248. (By the way AVG* is like batting average, but its hits/PA, I end up adjusting via the walk rate at the end to get to a true avg).

So, for a guy like CD, counting on a .300 BA is just kind of a pipe dream. Its tough to see how he hits dramaticly better than 250 unless he gets his walk rate up, his HR rate up, or his K rate drastically down, or becomes a LD hitter with a freakishly high BABIP like MY or Ichiro, and I really don’t see any of them happening. You can have higher BABIPs in the minors, but I just don’t see carrying it in the majors.

Thats kind of how I figure he is a 260/330/500 guy best case, and if his power drops do to lack of selectivity, he starts looking like Incaviglia et al. at 250/320/450.

So in other words, nothing like Adam Dunn at all.

I’m thinking more along the lines of Ryan Howard. Only with less walks. Or maybe more accurately Chris Young (the outfielder) with more power.

I don't see Davis having 50+ hr seasons, but that's a good name

I could see him as Ryan Howard with less power, fewer walks, and much better defense.

I don’t know what to think about Chris B. Young. He was always going to be a low BA/OBP guy but was going to make up for it with an unprecedented speed/power combo. While he’s shown flashes of it, he certainly hasn’t become the guy they thought he would. .192/.252/.361 with 6 HR and 10 SB is just bad no matter how you try to analyze it.

Yah, Ryan Howard is the name for me.

Obviously Davis is looking really bad right now, but his minor league production was always really, really good and he was good last year.

Is he really going to be one of those guys who just can’t hack in the bigs cause he can’t lay off of a good breaking ball buried in the dirt by his feet?

Maybe.

But when I look at the whole track record here I still think there’s enough hope that I’m not gonna write him off as a Ben Broussard type at this point.

The guy has got mammoth power and a track record of domination in the minors.

The 40 Trumps All!!!

So did

Jason Botts. Maybe Jason can get CD a spot in the Jap minor leagues with him if it doesn’t work out here.

Davis was much better in the minors than Botts

Botts minors OPS = 877

Davis minors OPS = 952

Of course there’s about a 2,000 minor league AB difference between them.

Not to mentioned that Davis was much younger for each level (a huge consideration) and is a plussy plus defender.

And honestly I think Botts would’ve Custed or Branyaned if we’d given him enough time, but we gave him chances to earn that time and he never showed even a real glimmer, so I can’t really fault the team for cutting bait.

I think you will need to find someone

who has a walk rate of 6 or 7 percent to compare him to. I doubt CD will be able to hang with any of the 10-12% walk guys in terms of Average or SLG. Its just going to be too easy to get him to chase.

That was quite the line-up our manager put together tonight.

Shocking that we only scored one run.

And I gotta tell ya, I was completely shocked that Crush was overmatched by Bronxton.

and lest we forget, he’s the same Mensa who thought it was a great idea to play Sammy Sosa against RH pitchers and hit him clean-up although his OPS in those situations was below .700.

never thought i would say this....

the rangers have no offense, they have pitching and defense, when will this team ever get all 3 phases of the game going at once? maybe they will pull one out tomorrow, but i don’t like the match up (Rangers offense against that guy, shutout likely!)

I was just thinking the same thing earlier this week. Ironic that the Rangers have a reputation for offense, and now everything is clicking but the offense.

Another target I've been thinking about is Jim Thome

Leads the majors in BB/9, and the White Sox kinda suck this year, although they’re still in long shot distance, I guess. Only thing is, he’s damned expensive, now that I check his contract out. 13mm option this year. So strike that idea, I guess.

Thome has always been beastly at our park

.307 / .421 / .608 in 247 plate appearances.

Yeah, probably too expense, but that'd be a great addition

His power and patience would be much appreciated right now and he’s a career .307/.421/.608 hitter at TBiA. He’s clearly a DH, so Warsh wouldn’t be tempted to play him in the field over superior fielders (like I could see Warsh doing with other guys). Plus, one would think that he could be a good influence, at least on Davis—if this future Hall of Famer, LH 1B/DH is standing up there taking lots of pitches and drawing walks, the 23 year-old LH 1B/DH is probably going to take notice.

Yep.

With that pricetag, I would wonder if he might even be a bit cheaper prospect-wise if we where willing to absorb the contract. But we really can’t.

Nick Johnson still looks like the most realistic target as far as price and how willing the Nats might be to move him goes.

I don't see someone

who is purely a DH as a plus.

The slots it looks like the Rangers need the most offensive help is OF, 1B and C. It would be a plus if we got someone who could man one of those positions while Hamilton gets healthy, or we send someone down to the minors to work out problems.

Blalock is hitting righties pretty well at DH, and its an open question whether April was just a fluke for AJ or if he can bring some production for the other side of the platoon, but DH really isn’t our big problem.

Getting a patient high-OBP hitter in here to anchor the lineup is the problem

The outfield really isn’t a problem. Cruz and Murphy are fine, it’s just Byrd is a bit of a weak link and he’s not going to be subtracted from the mix even if we do acquire another OF. And there’s no sense in sending Salty or Tea to the minors at this point because Max needs to be the full-time catcher in OKC to prove he hasn’t burned out.

Davis is the only guy who can actually be sent down, and there’s no sense in acquiring a placeholder for him when we have Blalock, who does seem to be improving (.375 OBP his last 12 games).

So I don’t see how a guy being a DH could possibly be a holdup if he can serve as the OBP anchor this lineup needs.

And as for Jones

Fuck him. The way he’s hitting lately, I have no problem with kicking him out the door if we can bring in Nick Johnson or the like. He’s not the kind of player you keep giving chances to improve if you can find someone better.

Well, no matter what you need a RH bat to platoon with Blalock at either 1b or DH, cause Blalock can't hit LHP.

Ever since he went from a spray hitting line drive machine to this bulky pull happy version he’s been completely unable to hit LHP.

He’s great against RHP, but no Hank versus LHP.

Please.

Just, no.

I haven't seen much

to convince me Blalock can hit lefties. So you want someone to play at least platoon 1B. Also, Blalock isn’t particularly good defensively.

Offensively, DH has been our 4th strongest position this year, after 2B, RF, and 3B. Getting another DH really doesn’t seem more valuable than getting a 1B or C. Now, I doubt we can get a catcher, so getting someone who can fill 1B, especially against lefties would be nice.

Replacing our strong players with stronger players doesn’t seem nearly as good of a strategy as replacing our sucking black holes with stronger players.

Hawpe

I would worry about Hawpe though. He was remarkably consistent last year with his home/away splits considering he plays in Colorado, but this year is a different story.

2009:
Home: .435/.488/.725
Away: .276/.364/.520

He also had big home/away splits in ’07. I think he may have turned the corner into being a legitimately good hitter, but I would still worry about him pulling a Matt Holliday.

True enough.

I made this point earlier when his name brought up.

I spoze it would depend on what Colorado valued him. If they’re gonna value him like a ~.950 OPS guy, then no thanks. But if they’re reasonable and vaue him based on his true talent level as opposed to the inflated Coors Field version, then that might be fine.

Plus there’s his defense, which is epically bad. He’s a pure DH. There’s no way he could possibly hit well enough to make up for that defense of his. It’s bad to the point where I think we might actually be better off putting Hank out in the OF rather than Hawpe, and I’m only kidding a little on that. And do you trust Wash to not run Hawpe out there in the field if we pick him up, cause I don’t.
