Nope
We were done with day games after the last Sunday day game, anyway. It’s just too damn hot.

Yes, I expect it to be pretty bad
Normally I’d avoid day games but I had to make an exception today.
For barely any extra money I could have gotten pretty decent seats in LF but instead chose upper deck high row seats trying to get in the shade and wind.
the preceding post was a great success.
Went Last Night
As frustrated as I’ve been in a long time. No Ranger offense, 90+ degrees with no wind and extreme humidity. Plus a 19 month old at her first Rangers game who couldn’t eat enough lemon chillo’s (sp?) to keep her cool. Ugh…

Topic for discussion
Since Adam has left the natives to their own devices today, here’s a question I’d be interested to hear everyone’s thoughts on. Assume for purposes of the hypothetical that the package we’d give up for each player is extremely reasonable and a great value for the Rangers. Say we can trade for one, and only one, of these players in June/July:
RHP Huston Street
1B/DH Nick Johnson
OF/DH Brad Hawpe
RHP Roy Halladay
Based on our needs now and later this season, how do you rank those potential trade targets?

Plus, I don't think Drayton's ego would allow such a deal
1) He doesn’t ever want to admit his club is out of contention
2) He’ll never “blow it up”, see #1
3) He’d sure never trade major pieces to his cross-state rival and have to listen to the media talk about how the Astros have tanked as a franchise while the Rangers are headed the right direction.

Well then yes I want him, yes I'd want him at his price in terms of dollars, but no way in hell am I gonna throw the kind if package their way that it'd take to land him.
You’re talking Kinsler + Feliz + Smoak + Teagarden.
Or something around that much in terms of value.
You’d have to put something stupid like that together and just bowl them over for them to even think about it.
He’s that valuable right now.

They're not trading a young ace with a nice long term contract.
They’re just not.
I mean sure he’s gettable in the same way anyone’s gettable, in terms of, “If you make a silly offer, sure we’ll give him to you.”
Think Kinsler + Smoak + Feliz + Teagarden.
But why would we want to do that?
Teams simply don’t trade young aces under team control for a number of years going forward. They just don’t.

More, I'd say.
Just as good (if not better at this point) pitcher, less health question marks, plus he’s younger and under team control for a longer period, which is really a key. Haren’s nice long contract makes him almost untouchable, imo.
Webb: 09:$6.5M, 10:$8.5M club option (w/buyout)
Haren: 09:$7.5M, 10:$8.25M, 11:$12.75M, 12:$12.75M, 13:$15.5M club option ($3.5M buyout)

Halladay – how can you turn him down regardless of how bad your offense is.
Street – at some point our bullpen is going to be a major issue
Hawpe- just the type of hitter we need.
Johnson- would be a solid addition as well.

i dont know his contract situation, but thats a guy id love to have around here this year and possibly next year as we transition into have Smoak and hopefully a turned around Davis playing at the end of 2010 together. I wouldnt mind dealing for him if Davis cant turn his season around by mid-July, send Davis down for the rest of the season to figure it out as Hank takes over playing first most games with Johnson playing a couple here and there and DHing mostly

Trade targets
Halladay isn’t going to be traded.
Hawpe is the perfect guy to add to this lineup, and has a very reasonable contract. Getting Hawpe and Street in the same deal might win the division, but the price tag would be huge (i.e., Feliz).
Johnson is probably the more reasonable target, who would be a big help. Plus he a one-year rental, so he wouldn’t cost nearly as much and wouldn’t block Smoak in any way. He’s probably the guy I’m looking at right now, along with maybe Josh Willingham.

that far down in the 6th spot but it may just be crazy enough to work. I kind of like seeing Murph in the two hole. Nice dispersion of leftys into the righty lineup. I’ve wanted Andrus in leadoff for a while. It would be an experiment but could have awesome results.

GET THIS THROUGH YOUR HEADS PEOPLE!!! OPS FOR A LEADOFF HITTER IS A BULLSHIT STAT
look at Pete Rose’s OPS for individual seasons and tell me how many years he had over .800.
how many years has Ichiro hit over 800 ops?
slugging % for a leadoff hitter isnt important. you can use these new fandangled stats all you want, but f’n use them right, or dont use them at all.
give me a list of the greatest leadoff hitters of all time and i bet 90 % never had a slugging % worth a shit, but hey add that to a .400 OBP and look at that… he’s a sub 800 ops, he sucks.

Well if you want to compare
just their OBPs, its 313 versus Chris DAvis Shiteous .266.
I wasn’t comparing their place in the order though. I assume a good manager can juggle a lineup, and Rangermad said nothing about the leadoff position.
"He (Padilla) shouldve gone back to Venezuela and watched on his Direct TV waiting to find out who his new team would be!!. ." - crops.mlblogs.com
I completely disagree.
I think OPS is a fine (if imperfect) stat to judge hitters on, and I see no reason why a particular spot in the order should be judged completely differently than all the others.
Ooh! He’s hitting in front of the 2, 3, 4 guys, so doubles and homers don’t matter!
No, I disagree.
XBH’s always matter.
I agree that OBP should be wieghted a bit more heavily with top of the order guys, but to say OPS is completely irrelevant for them is folly, imo.

i agree with ya, i just think that when it comes to leadoff hitters, if you got the right one, it doesnt matter if its a single a walk or a double. Rickey Henderson spent most of his career above .800 ops (2 of those above 1.000 holy shit right?). 15 seasons over and 10 under in a 25 year career, but hes the greatest ever. ichiro is an above .800 ops career wise at .820 iirc but that will drop as he ages more and more. pete rose spent half his career as a sub .800 ops leading off
it really just doesnt mean a whole lot in terms of what i want a prototypical even HOF worthy leadoff hitter, even today.
mormons stole me and held me against my will with Oklahoma beer and 12+ hour work days.
OPS
Pete Rose had 11 seasons with an OPS greater than .800, and two more seasons than were just a few points below that.
The best leadoff hitter ever, Rickey Henderson, had 15 seasons with an OPS greater than .800, and several seasons with an OPS greater than .900.
Both of them had career slugging percentages over .400.

Pretty classy move by Cecil Cooper
Rodriguez will catch his 2,225th career game, which will tie Bob Boone for No. 2 on the all-time list and leave Pudge one behind the all-time leader, Carlton Fisk. That will put Pudge in position to match and pass Fisk’s record during the upcoming Interleague series in Arlington against the Rangers — where and with whom Rodriguez had spent the first 12 years of his career.
“I looked at the schedule two, three weeks ago. Yes, I thought it’d be nice to set it up like this,” admitted Houston manager Cecil Cooper. “That’s where he started out. It’ll mean a lot to him.”

i love it. absolutely love the respect, loyaly, and class some of these managers who are now getting their shot are showing. drove a borrowed Lexus up to the gate, State Trooper rejects me saying the lot is full. Park and walk a mile away crossing a railroad track and going over/under a fenced in manufacturing plant, sweating like a stuck pig, only to walk up to the same State Trooper who is freely waiving people into the Lexus free valet area, including another one of my friends.
Sweating swamp-style up to our seats, it was actually a decent game minus the heat until the lights delayed on us. I don’t understand how it took an hour and a half to get those things on. Did they mention on TV exactly what went wrong, and why it took so long?
We finally get back to playing, and of course the Feldman vs. Wolf gem is scratched…
It was good to see the Jones HR, and Davis extend his hitting streak to 4 games (despite striking out twice), but the offensive futility was even more difficult to witness live after such a long delay.
6-0 was a nice game two days ago, but I want a 10 spot against these guys today. Massive breakout. I guess that’s not possible with Bill on the mound
