Happy birthday, Dave Liddell
Happy birthday to Dave Liddell, who turns 43 today.
Never heard of him? He's a modern day Moonlight Graham...on June 3, 1990, he came into the game for the Mets in the 8th inning, New York trailing 8-1, to pinch hit for Mackey Sasser. He singled and came around to score, caught the bottom of the 8th, and was left on the on deck circle when the Mets went down 1-2-3 in the top of the 9th.
He never played in the majors again, ending up going 1 for 1 with a 1.000 batting average.

Well, at least he has one great Major League story to tell
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

That's one more than the rest of us.
Just to say you made it.

Yep
Make your mark and get out. “I had the highest batting average ever in the major leagues”.

When I saw the name Dave Liddell,
all I could think of was the comedian who had the Insomniac show on Comedy Central a couple of years back. Then I remembered his name was Dave Attell, not Dave Liddell.
at least he got to
wink at the pitcher.
Man, I love winning! You know? It's like better than losing!
god bless him
Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."
Interesting
Going 1-1 with a single gets you a 454 OPS+
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
Ended his career in the Astros organization
Barely hit over .200.
Another career 1.000 guy was Jeff Bannister (Pirates 1991) who overcame bone cancer and paralysis to make it to the bigs for one game. He beat out a grounder to short for his only hit.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
