The Game Day Threads

I'm trying to decide what to do about the game day threads.

The LSB community has grown to the point where we have multiple GDTs per night.

And that's great...but it presents a problem in that it means I have to be at the computer throughout games to close threads and open new ones, which is problematic for me right now.

So I'm trying to decide what to do.  I could simply schedule new threads to open every hour or hour and a half, and close automatically after a given amount of time.  Or I could get someone to volunteer to be in charge of GDTs, so I don't have to deal with them (except when the volunteer is out of pocket or unavailable).

Or I can keep doing what I've been doing, knowing that periodically we're going to have a 700 post most thread that doesn't get closed and a new thread opened.

Give me your thoughts.

I'd be okay with new threads popping up on schedule

We usually get at least 3 per game so 1 per hour would do the job.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Schedule them for every 45 min

Schedule the original to open up 45 min before gametime instead of an hour and then each subsequent one to close after 45 minutes. A typical game is 3 hours which including the pregame thread would mean 5 GDTs. The last one can stay open until you close it for the recap.

For division games as long as we stay in the race

We would probably need about 7 threads.

I agree about the first game day thread

Before a game even starts there are over 100 comments most nights. Delaying the posting of that thread just 15-20 minutes would slow down the need for subsequent threads.

whatever happened to those posts Ben was doing?

A look around other SBN sites. I liked those except when BG would tell Ben that he wasn’t funny then they would get in extended pissing match. Actually, I liked that part too.

do the every hour

the really big games where the threads fill up faster, you’ll probably be around anyway.

occasionally we’ll have the extra long thread and everyone will know to be quiet until the new one comes around.

of course, if the rangers lose the first time this system is in place, you’re going to have to can it. choose wisely for the first game.

Fanshots can't be scheduled

so scheduled posts would have to sgo back to being front page articles. Unless you went back afterwards and unchecked the front page box — effectively burying them so they are could only be found through a search.

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

freeloading GDTers

I’m surprised that nobody has really stepped up with, “sure, I’d be willing to help”.

Maybe I’m mistaken, but I think that is what Adam was looking for when he said:

This.

I, too, would volunteer but I could only do away games. I am in favor of automagic threads, but there would have to be a link to the new thread at the bottom, especially if they will disappear from the front page. I may be a nerd, but I do actually go back and read GDTs later if I went to the game.

Reading the GDT’s is always nice if you attended the game because you can see if you missed anything, which you probably did.

Just let us fend for ourselves

Somebody’s computer will slow to a crawl and somebody will make a new thread before it gets to 700 comments.

I’d set an official line for a new thread at 450, and leave it to the GDTers to make their own once a thread goes past that.

This isn't a bad idea actually

if a mod had power to close threads. That seems to be what kills us for a bit – when someone other than you or Z makes a new fanpost GDT, it takes a while for people to migrate over to the new one, because they can still post in it.

Yeah I like this.

Based on some of the games this season, the GDT would grow to LL-like proportions if they were scheduled every hour. I’m more of a lurker than a poster but I’m watching on average 5 games a week start to finish. On a given night there’s got to be a few people available to moderate GDTs. I’ll even volunteer despite my lower status in the LSB Community.

by drizzle on Jun 16, 2009 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here's an idea...

Why not disqualify every poster who cannot refrain from dropping the f… bomb when he expresses himself? There are those of us who can express ourselves without resorting to profanity who are communicating with each other about what can be done about the gutter mentality of many on this forum who can’t.

Of course, that extreme form of censorship won’t happen, but I would like to get the word out that many of us are horrified by the lack of decent expression found here day after day.

I tend to think of my right to drop the F-bomb in a GDT akin to my right to bear arms.

I suppose I could make an effort to go the BSG “frak” route a little more often, but when Ian Kinsler pops up for the 4th consecutive time and Marlon Byrd GIDP’s the next pitch I reserve my right to let ’er rip.
