Live Chat with JD!!
Check out the chat that JD participated in over at DMN blog site! Some really good questions, and of course you had some pretty stupid ones as well.
I am more and more impressed with JD's willingness to interact and engage the fans of this club! I am sure there are other GMs out there that do this sort of thing but I have to think they are pretty few and far between. Between these chats and events like the Newberg Night, just shows you that JD cares 1) about this team and 2) cares about the fans that pay his sallary!! He even responded to a question stating that he freaquents LSB and would be willing to participate in conversation with us here!! Get on that AJM!!!

Also, see the fanshot below that highlights Josey's question.
Overall, it was a great chat. I was really happy to hear that they hope to sign Scheppers much earlier than the Aug 17th deadline, because they feel he could move quickly.
Start him out in Hickory and if he dominates, jump him to Frisco. That would be my dream scenario for Scheppers.

It was my question about Scheppers and the deadline… ouch, I dislocated my shoulder patting myself on the back. I need to email Josey and ask him ho whe does it.

Do you ever visit sites similar to LoneStarBall? If so, have you ever engaged in conversation there? Would you ever discuss Ranger’s items there?
Jon Daniels: Yes I visit there occassionally. No I haven’t gotten involved other than reading some of the entries, but yes I’d participate if asked.

When I read "Comment from Josey"
I immediately thought this was fixing to get bad. Then I read the question.

Oh it was him.
The more I think about it. I think it was more of an invitation by the Outlaw. Josey wants to try and exert some punishment on Donuts in a venue that allows for cursing.
The Outlaw might better watch what he wishes for. The Ivy Leaguer may send him away with his tail between his legs.

At first I thought it was a dumb question
1:37 [Comment From Hightower]
This morning Jeff Miller ran a story about Matt Purke, saying the player’s optimistic about signing, but that his demand for Porcello’s deal is real. Will the contract get done? And might we see Tanner Scheppers sign before the deadline?
1:38 Jon Daniels: I’m not going to get specific about negotiations, but we took both players with the full intent and expectation to sign them. Ultimately both sides have to make compromises, but if that happens, I don’t see any reason why they won’t sign before the 8/17 date.
If you take him at face value, maybe Purke and Sheppers negotiations happen irrespective of the deadline.
But I thought the exact significance of it was you can’t sneak over-slot deals past Bud except…right at the deadline?
Maybe he means like a few minutes before the deadline. I don’t blame him for any vagueness…negotiations are ongoing.
"[Font} doesn't turn 19 until the end of May and his heater can already hit 99 on the gun. That's baseball porn." - Jason Parks
priorities
I think they put a big effort into signing Scheppers as early as possible. Could they intice him to sign early by giving him a ML deal? JD thinks he could move quickly. Sign early, get some innings in at Spokane, go to FIL and AFL and the Bakersfield next year?
As for Purke, I think they won’t mind if he signs at 11:59. He needs some tweeks to his delivery and will probably go to FIL and then extended next year.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Skip Bakersfield, hopefully.
Hopefully, Tanner can get something like 60-80 innings this year. That would put him on track for something like 120-140 next year, and a full ML season the year following that.

I agree
I think with Scheppers being more advanced and presumably more physically mature, as well as still having a light load this year, time’s a wasting. With the HS guy it would certainly be nice to get him going, but he’ll still have instructs and all. I see a lot more in it for Texas to sign Scheppers early.

Heh
That’s why those who keep yearning for a showdown are spinning their wheels.
Sidebar: Myself and 3 others tend to talk politics frequently at work, and all 3 of the others are big right wingers. With 2 of them I enjoy the discourse consistently and thoroughly, and w/ the third I avoid as much as possible. Reason being, I can’t abide a discussion w/ somebody that is so obnoxiously dogmatic that they won’t concede a clear point against their point of view. Whether your views are to the right or to the left, there are some size large assholes on your team, and to defend those douches unfailingly is deal-breakingly offputting.
Josey calls for accoutability w/ others, but sneers at it when it comes to his own views. If a dude can’t admit when he or those he supports is wrong, and do so in a straight shooting manner, why would you give a frog’s fat ass what else he has to offer.

Josey is exactly
that kind of guy. The world is black and white, and those two colors are decided by his beliefs and only his. The world is a frustratingly gray place and too many people look for easy answers and convenient labels. I hate the two party system because it encourages this kind of crap from both sides, where the concern is more on packaging your message than in making sure your message is the right one.

Such as, even though you think the Tex trade may turn into something good, you still don’t give JD any credit at all.

"I am one of the biggest Texas Ranger fans out there but I'm also one of the smartest. Deal with it."
-The Outlaw
Donuts looks to have been very fortunate with the Tex Trade.
He had a HOF potential player in his prime with 1.5 years left on his contract and was able to deal him to a GM who didn’t give a damn about the future.
He still has a long way to go to make up for the failed Soriano, AG/CYoung, Danks trades.
When you factor in all those failed deals in with the state of our pitching staff (going into 2008) at the major league level – it’s obvious the little twit didn’t have the first clue how to build a successful major league organization without somebody like Nolan Ryan around to pick up the pieces and show him how.
"Dying ain't hard. It's living that's hard."
by Josey Wales on Jun 18, 2009 11:28 AM CDT up reply actions
Not fortunate
He made a good trade, he talked to several teams for weeks and negotiated the best deal from the interested parties. He didn’t get lucky. If you’re going to say that than you’d have to say he was “unfortunate” in the SD trade.
How many players on the current first place club did Nolan Ryan acquire? None. Whose plan did Ryan endorse after a year of observation? Daniels’ plan.
