James Johnson, actually in his "mock 5.0"
Analysis: At No. 22, the Mavs can sit back and see who falls.
Johnson could be a terrific sleeper pick. He has the raw ability to be great, but has hurt his stock a bit in workouts.
Dallas would be walking away with a real talent, albeit not necessarily filling a need.

“el” agua.
"Yeah, like I had a chance there" - Lancaster batter, after striking out against Derek Holland
You don't
Speak Spanish, do you?
To say “la agua” is silly. It leaves your jaw open for every syllable.
That’s why it reverts to “las” in the plural—it brings together the jaw and tongue.
Although from the tone of your comment, I’m inferring that you believe it’s all totally random—an excellent thesis if I’ve ever heard one.
by brettgardner on Jun 17, 2009 8:08 AM CDT up reply actions
As a kid
I just thought that the “a”, “e”, “i” were the “girl” vowels, whereas “o”, “u” were the masculine vowels (“u” being more masculine than “o”, and thus able to override many “girl” vowels, hehe)
the deal with “la agua” is that it sounds as though you were saying just one word (lagua). When you switch it to plural, then the distinction between words is much clearer, so the pronoun goes back to fem. It also has to do with the fact that you put stress on the first syllable of agua (á-gua vs. say…. “la” a-lón-dra) but I’m not sure how to explain it right now.

That's a pretty bonehead thing to say
To the rest of the world, English is the hardest language to understand. Imagine the frustration of a non-English speaker when having to decipher one of the ten different meanings of the word ‘cock’
english is hard?
depends on where you’re coming from. If you come from a culture that already uses the alphabet, then it shouldn’t be as hard as it is to someone who doesn’t. Now freaking japanese has more than 50 characters in their “alphabet” and three main types of writing (katakana, hiragana, and kanji). They also use chinese characters (kanji), but guess what? even if you’re chinese, kanjis in japan do not mean the same as in china.

Don Sanders "longshot" to invest in Rangers
It’s clear, though, that if Sanders is to invest, Ryan will be heavily involved. He called Ryan one of the best businessmen he has ever known and said whoever utlimately invests in the Rangers would be wise to keep Ryan in the loop.

I didn’t press him on the latest specifics and meetings, as that’s his business and it really doesn’t matter to me, but we did talk some about a couple family friends of mine that they have spoken with about the sale… and neither are pursuing it currently.
I did come away with the impression that they aren’t in any panic or any rush to make a sale though. Sounds like they can ride along in default at their $600M asking price a lot longer than I would have figured.
Well ok that wasn't so hard

Ordered my copy of The Book last week.
Should come in anytime now.
Based off that post, how does your top of the order look?
Assuming Hamilton comes back to injury and bats at expected levels, and Murphy continues to improve:
Young
Kinsler
Murphy/Jones/Elvis(?)
Hamilton
Cruz
I think that’s a decent interpretation of what I read in the post…
The tough thing is finding someone to lead off
I don’t really think I’d want MY there – he had a .296 OBP his last 19 games coming into tonight and just doesn’t take many walks period. I don’t really think he’s got the OBP skills to be a leadoff guy, although his overall OBP right now still looks fairly decent thanks to his early-season hot streak. He’s actually the guy I’d think would be ideal for #3, because of his struggles to hit with RISP and men on base this year.
Murphy would probably be the guy I’d stick at leadoff right now, seeing as how he’s drastically improved his approach at the plate this year, but he hasn’t walked in 8 games now himself.
If Hamilton where healthy I’d go Murphy-Kinz-MY-Ham-Cruz for the first 5, but with the guys we’ve currently got, I’d probably go Murphy-Kinz-MY-Cruz-Blalock against righties.
It gets more complicated against lefties. One thing is, I think Elvis could actually be your leadoff man against southpaws. He’s hitting .271/.386/.396 and has had 9 walks in just 58 PA’s against lefties vs. .258/.292/.379 with just 4 walks in 133 PA’s against righties. He shouldn’t sniff leadoff vs. righties, but he might actually be the best option there vs. lefties (Boggs and MY are about your only other ones, so…)
Kinz would remain at second and Cruz at cleanup, but then there’s the matter of what to do with Andruw and MY. ’Druw has not hit lefties well this year despite the fact that that was what he was brought here to do (.222/.362/.426) and MY has ripped them up (.342/.377/.534) so I actually might flip flop MY and the DH spot, putting Andruw 3rd and MY 5th.
So vs. righties:
Murphy
Kinsler
MY
Cruz
Hackin Hank
and vs. lefties:
Elvis
Kinz
’Druw
Cruz
MY

Jonathan Sanchez’s value is dropping but Blalock is not a fit for SF.
Padilla might be a type A FA next offseason. No way the Rangers decline his option and then offer arbitrtation. However, it does increase his trade value.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
I think with the Juan Cruz situation from this past year
Quite a few more guys will accept arbitration if they are type A FAs or quite a few more teams will decline to offer it to guys
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Would JD decline his option
and let him walk? Doesn’t sound like his M.O.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
I think alot depends on the young guys
If Sheets looks to be healthy and still wants to come here then I think he would let Padilla walk and take the draft picks. Also Holland has to show hes ready and Harrison and BMac need to continue improving. I don’t think he would allow us to go into next year with a rotation of Millwood/Harrison/Feldman/BMac/Holland.
My thinking however is with the economy the way it is and teams wanting to shed salary around the league teams will be less likely to offer arbitration to some guys for fear they will take it. And with the Cruz situation from last year the way he stayed unsigned for so long solely because of his FA type A status I think teams will be scared that players will accept arbitration to ensure they get paid.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I thought you don't get draft picks if he purely lets him walk?

I was thinking of that yesterday after seeing his name among the possible Type A’s over at mlbtraderumors. I don’t see how he’s a type A, but the guy who thinks he’s “reverse engineered” the process has him there. I don’t see why a team would be ready to give up a first rounder to sign Padilla as a free agent. Offering him arb would be dangerous.

I’ve also seen him throw his bat twice, helmet 4 times, and ankle brace four times. So yeah, low confidence

Talking about Millwood trying to nab grounders bare handed on the radio
"BIg whoop, wanna fight about it?"
Its purely reflex
Its just annoying because a broken bone in his hand probably knocks him out for a month or two and hes been our best pitcher this year. We lose him and we are toast

Instinct should tell him he has the Blue Blur behind him.
But I know what you’re saying…

Playing in front of Michael Young for two years can permanently damage a pitchers psyche.

Instinct should say....
“Ouch, those types of balls have hurt my hand in the past, I shouldn’t stick my hand out and hurt it again.”
When you’re cooking something in a stove, instinct tells you to pick it up to move it; however, experience tells you to use pot holders or gloves.

Cool, a righty instead of a lefty.

Not cool
I was hoping we’d finally have a Brandon Boggs sighting on Thursday.

Hampton is not a "tough" lefty.
Remember, RW said Murphy will start except against the tough lefties.

Two scoreless innings for Hickory tonight . Every one of his outs were K’s. Although he did give up two walks.

7 for 30 with a .258 obp in June (took his only walk of the month tonight) plus he missed a hit & run sign with his team down 6-3 and no outs in the 8th inning.
Why would anybody complain about the amount of playing time Teagarden is receiving right now?

How do you miss a hit & run sign
when none was given? I believe Wash has said TT will be getting more playing time. I am sure he will start tomorrow.

El Duque is in OKC
“That’s in the past,” Hernandez said. “My concentration is on the future, in the present. My present is that I’m going to the mound out of the bullpen. I’m no longer a starting pitcher.”
.
The 6-foot-2 righthander has not pitched in a professional game since July 17 of last year, when he lasted one inning, allowing two runs, in an Eastern League start for Double-A Binghamton.
.
“He hasn’t faced hitters in a long time,” RedHawks manager Bobby Jones said, “so we’ll just give him a feel for it. The Rangers just said ‘get him ready and then let us know,’ so that’s what we’ll do.”
.
Hernandez will work on the side in Oklahoma City, then eventually pitch batting practice two or three times.
Just got back from the game
It looked to me like the pitchers were getting squeezed early but that the strike zone expanded as the game went on. Did it look like that on tv?
