Crops on the Farm: Draft Review

Just a brief review of the Rangers first 6 rounds of the 2009 amateur draft.  Here is the link: Crops on the latest Crops

Here is a taste:

R1 (14) LHP Mathew Purke: Color me tickled. Purke might turn out to be the best first round selection since fellow Texan John Danks in 2003. Purke who is from Texas, was one of the best left handed pitchers in the draft with an explosive fastball and a very good slider. He is a tall kid with room to add more mass as he gets older. This is the type of draft pick the Rangers needed to make. He might just blow away the competition and reach Arlington before all the busts not-named Blake from the 2007 draft. Mark my words. Purke is going to be an ace. Apparently he only fell to Texas because of his bonus demands but that wont stop Billionare Tom Hicks from writing the check Jerry Jones style. (Is having three Billionare owners good for Dallas sportsfans or bad? Discuss.) Purke seems like a lock to sign and should reach Hickory by the end of the season. I cant wait until this kid makes it to Arlington. Start the timer.

Grade: A+

Honest question man, why do you even bother plugging your site here anymore?

You know what’s coming, if all you can offer in the way of analysis is calling Mendoca a horrible pick because he was “unknown” and Sierra a great pick because his daddy was pretty good.

At this point I’m starting to think this is a schtick.

This is greatness

1. Everyone from the 2007 draft but Beavan is a bust? That’s rich. Considering JD said Borbon is high on the priority list to get a call-up right now.

2. What publications do you read? Because all the important ones knew who Mendonca was. You know, when a guy is named Most Outstanding Player in the College World Series, that kind of kills the whole “unknown” bit.

3. Robbie Ross “hasn’t even been good enough to pitch” Uhh, what do you think he’s been doing down in extended? Drinking Snapple and playing Boggle all day?

clearly you do not believe the scouts on erlin
R3: LHP Robert Erlin.

Well, it looks like the Rangers drafted another throw away player. Erlin who? Erlin is a very short lefthanded pitcher that doesn’t throw hard and doesn’t have a high ceiling. He was a cheap player to sign and not much else. How many little pitchers do the Rangers need? Kiker has potential but Ross hasn’t even been good enough to pitch and we drafted him last season. If Erlin is the new Ross than Rangers fans deserve an apology.

Grade: F

read a lot of things about him that basically said his problem was that he is too short, if he was 2-3 inches taller he would have been a 1st rd pick

equally ross was a 1st rd talent last year but dropped because of his committment to kentucky (i think it was KY) and his bonus demands to buy him out of that committment. ross has not pitched this year because he has been at extended ST and the rangers want to limit his innings pitched — what would you rather them do? start him off early and then end his season early or start him off later and let him pitch through the end of the year?

quick search talks about erlin on a mets site

5/28 from BA: Multiple scouts have said the same thing about Erlin: “If he were two inches taller, you’d be talking about him as a first rounder.” One scout regretted that it had to come down to that. “That sucks that what we do for a living is look at kids and cookie cut them like that.” Erlin is a 5-foot-11, 170-pound lefthander from the Santa Cruz area. Despite the small frame, he still has some life to his fastball, pitching at 89-92 mph. He commands the pitch to both sides of the plate and also has a well-above-average curveball—a hammer he can throw for strikes in any count. He can get underneath his changeup a little bit, but it too has a chance to be above-average. Erlin is regarded as a great kid and is committed to Cal Poly.

jim callis:

Bryan (San Francisco): I know he doesn’t have the greatest size, but do you think LHP Robbie Erlin from Scotts Valley has a chance to go in the top 3 rounds? Thanks!

John Manuel: Sounds like he does, spins a breaking ball very well, if he were bigger he’d be a first-rounder but we’re hearing 2-to-4 on him.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

just face it and agree that you screwed the pooch on erlin and mendonca

because to be honest, you did

also, calling erlin a “throw away” player is fucking dumb, hes a top 200 draft prospect per BA and he would have been a 1st rd guy if he was 3 inches taller…

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

by knockoutking on Jun 17, 2009 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

That doesn't matter

Erlin has command of two pitches, has already developed an above-average curve, has a good feel for a change-up, and according to several scouts, had a first-round arm.

Potential first-round value in the third round? I’ll take that every time, especially when it’s left-handed. There’s a fair number of successful pitchers in the majors under six feet tall.

this is kind of my point

and i saw it a lot of places regarding the rangers draft — even when someone (a reviewer) didnt particularly like the draft, they were quick to say that the player chosen was good value for where the pick was made (ie, sierra, erlin, etc)

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

by rentz on Jun 17, 2009 11:29 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

You missed the point

The issue is not that if he were three inches taller he’d be a good pitcher. The issue is that he he doesn’t have the prototypical body type for a starting pitcher, so he probably got overlooked or at the very least, dinged a little bit by scouts.

If he was a fastball only guy, the height would definitely be an issue. But short pitchers with good breaking balls and/or changes can be extremely successful in the big leagues. See Oswalt, Roy.

I’m going to side with Baseball America on this one. They’ve no doubt analyzed Erlin much more than anyone on this site.

Of the top ten ERA leaders in each league, the following are 6'0" or below

Cueto: 5’10"
Lincecum: 5’11"
Billingsley: 6’0"
Lilly: 6’0"

That’s 20% of the top 20 ERA pitchers right now. Four others are 6’1’. Those are just the ERA leaders among starting pitchers, not to mention the rest of those starters and relievers who are “above average.”

Well, not that many are drafted.

So… even if they fall off at a lower rate than taller pitchers, there will be fewer of them around.

The might succeed more often (percentage-wise) but that’s because to get drafted/signed as a short guy, you need to have something special. Sometimes tall guys get drafted just because they’re tall. It skews the numbers.

Like I said below, ultimately the individual determines his success, but scouts are always going to favor the tall guy unless the short guy has far better stuff.

It's not bad because he's lefthanded.

That’s not even what Finnerty was saying.

It’s questionable because he’s short and doesn’t have overwhelming stuff – at least, according to most reports. I haven’t seen it, so I can’t really comment on it.

The scouting reports certainly aren’t as glowing as you’d like to see for a 3rd round pick.

I disagree
Well, it looks like the Rangers drafted another throw away player. Erlin who? Erlin is a very short lefthanded pitcher that doesn’t throw hard and doesn’t have a high ceiling. He was a cheap player to sign and not much else. How many little pitchers do the Rangers need?

He mentions Erlin’s stature twice. If height wasn’t the reason, he wouldn’t mention it more than once.

your wrong

your asking for good to great 5’11" lefties (again, for the record, how many guys do you think that are listed in the MLB at their “real” height?…)

not asking for players/pitchers who made the big leagues and held on for a while

so you dont want to have players who are solid, only who are All Star Caliber guys?

Your knock on him seems to be that he's short

Therefore, isn’t it useful to look at the success of short pitchers in general, rather than arbitrarily looking at ONLY 5’11" pitchers who also happen to be lefthanded? Have you heard of a phenomenon called sample size?

I'm wrong?

You listed a few names. That proves my point. Not many short pitchers, regardless if they are 5’10 and 5’11’’ or even 6’0’’ find success at the major league level compared to taller pitchers. Drafting a 5’11’’ lefty without dominate stuff is a throw-away pick in my opinion. Hes a longshot at best.

What are the odds exactly?

I’d love to see something more quantifiable than just listing pitchers who are short that pitch in the majors. What’s percentage of pitchers 6’0" or shorter drafted/signed that make the majors? What’s the percentage of pitchers 6’1" or taller who are drafted/signed who make the majors?

My gut feeling is that it’s not that big of a margin…

by jcir454 on Jun 17, 2009 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Percentages are pointless on the individual basis

There’s a reason some “short” pitchers never make it to the Majors as a successful pitcher while others do. Each one needs to be looked at as an an individual.

I agree...

but there are two posters who are arguing that taller pitchers have better odds to be successful major league pitchers than shorter pitchers. They did not, however, back that up with any statistical measure.

by jcir454 on Jun 17, 2009 12:08 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gdawg actually makes a good point.

Scouting is about the individual, not the odds. A short guy who throws 100 mph with dominant breaking stuff will get drafted high every time because despite his height, he has a very high ceiling.

Tall guys with average stuff have an advantage over short guys with average stuff. That’s a matter of physics.

Ultimately, the individual determines how good he’s going to be, but because of the nature of scouting, more 6’ 0" or taller pitchers are drafted because of the natural physical advantage.

Just so you know

And knockoutking alluded to this above- a lot of pitchers who are listed at 6 feet or 6’1" are really not that tall. It’s pretty common for pitchers to “add” an inch or two of height, precisely because of the scouting prejudice against “short” pitchers.

Also- it’s “dominant” stuff. “Dominate” is the verb, “dominant” is the adjective. Just a small pet peeve of mine.

In high school

i didnt throw hard at all. Serioulsy sat 75-77. Got recruited by one JuCo that sucked and went there. Started working out a lot, gained another MPH on the fastball. Then started working Ray Burris full time and Coach Smith at UD. Dropped my arm angle and fixed a few mechanical things starting sitting in the low to mid 80s (touched 88 a few times one summer). So basically a 8%-12% increase. That is why i HATE cookie cutter approaches to pitching. There are certain fundamentals that everyone needs to adhere for safety and effectiveness but other than that everyone is different.

There's a nature vs nurture argument there.

Technically speaking everyone is the same until muscle memory is built up and the stress of pitching causes structural changes. Even then, the human body is still going to behave the way everyone else’s does (without regard to metabolism).

If you’re brought up to throw side-arm, you’ll probably always throw harder from there. That said, if you had been brough up as an over-the-top pitcher, you probably would have had a higher peak velocity and better health.

"Cookie cutter" isn't the right way to approach it.

The human body begins to differentiate/adapt/adjust/reform as soon as muscle activity increases. The body responds to stress/activity by getting stronger.

Nearly 100% of untrained throwers will throw exactly the same way. They haven’t trained to throw, so their bodies are doing as little as possible to accomplish it while joints move naturally. This is the definition of mechanical efficiency.

Trained throwers put large torques on their shoulders and elbows because they’ve taught themselves to throw inefficiently and/or unnaturally. The act of training builds the muscle memory and causes the structural changes.

Obviously, the longer you throw like this the more natural it feels and the harder it is to correct injurious flaws.

is this why the tigers (i think)

were interested in and signed those two guys from india who threw 90+?

or would that be a reason to sign them (no experience throwing) ?

Those guys were trained by Tom House.

They don’t have the fitness that comes with years of training.

That’s an awful combination from an injury-risk perspective.

I was brought up throwing about as over the top as possible however

my arm action seem to suggest that a low 3 quarters arm slot was more natural. Basically, i had a really long arm motion in back and then forced my arm over the top. Burris was big on putting emphasis on feet, fingers, and neck. Have solid foundations there and everything else will fall into place. There more is to it of course but would be a lot to type.

Being a douche makes one a douche. Your explanation for my categorization of CJ is rather simplistic. I think what CJ does with his own time is his business. However, when you constantly draw the ire of your contemporaries for opening your mouth when you shouldnt and by acting like a hypocrite in regards to your straight-edge lifestyle, then yes, you are being a douche.

There are also people on this board who like CJ because he decided to post here and because some find him attractive to the eye. Apparently, that makes one a fan.
