The reality is, we shouldn't have had to go through all that to get that win.
But I’ll take it.

Houston has a lot more reason to be frustrated than TX, they had lots of chances.

well, Houston is in last place
and the Rangers are desperately trying to hold off a hot Angels team.
This game was winnable for each team but the loss would have been more of a heartbreaker for the Rangers.

I meant based on things that happened during the game itself
the Rangers had several things go their way and were lucky to win in my view.

Lots of DESERVED hate hurled at Wash.........
I’m still amazed this team is in 1st place in spite of their moron manager.
Using Jennings (who has been effective) in a 6-1 game yesterday, and then Eddie in the 8th inning of a 4-3 game today is ridiculous.
And pinch-hitting Andruw for Omar was just dumb.
We’d better hope the injuries catch up to the Angels before Washington’s “gut decisions” catch up to this team.
by Hard8 on Jun 17, 2009 10:22 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I dont think that part was dumb
the part where you pitch hit Andrus for CD and the AJ for Omar was the part he missed. You only need one run, dont leave CD out there who is not gonna move the runner over 75% of the time, get a guy who can actually make contact and move him over either by ball hit to the right side or bunt. Elvis for CD in that situation was the obvious move whether you wanted to bunt or not, It doesnt seem like is that obvious, but when you break it down, it becomes pretty clear that A) elvis is more likely to get a hit (we need a single, not a HR) B) Elvis is much, much, much more likely to move him over even if he doesnt get a hit. That would then make it an easy descision to put AJ in for Omahh.

I think blanket statements are the dumbest thing anyone can make
CD is up…salty is on deck…
that is not a situation conducive to bunting
i laugh more at the fact that no one is blaming CD for not moving the runner over….how is it just forgotten that that is still his job there
also, as AJM states…a bunt does not = 100% win

You are an idot
Who should never watch baseball ever again!! Come on man, every little leaguer knows that with no outs, bottom of the 9 with a runner at second, you BUNT HIM OVER!! No question about it.
And why would you bring in a reliable reliever who you will not let pitch back to back nights in a 5 run game late instead of bringing in a guy who is really only out there for mop up time?
Washington’s bullpen management is god aweful and his decisions at the plate are just flat at stupid!

It was a tie game and I don’t think Wash wanted to put AJ at 1B if they didn’t score. I think that is why he didn’t PH for Davis.

it is not some profound insight or strategy.
or, if you are taking it to its extreme, it is just stupid. not guarding against the possibility that your 40% chance of winning might not work out is stupid.

Possibly.
Bottom of the 9th with the game-winning run on second ain’t exactly an ideal situation to lay down a first bunt, though. I don’t believe Davis’ defensive advantage at first relative to Jones covers for the advantage gained by pinch-hitting for him.
by Snark on Jun 17, 2009 10:52 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well.....
you most likely never ask a guy that can pop 20-30 homers to bunt in a different situation. He’s not getting the sign in the 3rd. We play in the AL and push for the big inning.

Andrus likelihood of contact and chance of moving runner over, or even getting a game winning single>>>> than CD’s chances of doing either one of those. Id understand leaving CD out there if were down a run or especially down two, but we just needed that single run and Andrus out there would have definitively increased our liklihood of scoring that run.

Anybody else here wish the save was a subjective stat?
Like allow the official scorer to give saves out sorta like errors. Right now “closers” are saved until the 9th inning. Because thats the only time you can really get a save (yes I know about multiple inning saves). But if a save was a subjective stat and the official scorer could hand it out as they pleased it would allow managers to bring in their “closers” in the tightest spots.
Like today we would have brought in CJ in the 8th to pitch to Berkman, Pence, and Pudge instead of saving him for what would have been the bottom of the order in the 9th.

Always good to win against the bad teams
I hate losses against teams you are better than in every single way. I can handle losses against more talented teams.
- Ron is extremely frustrating sometimes, but I cant say that I completely disagree with what he did and I cant say that out of who we could have hired two years ago that any of them would have done better. This team believed they could win, and I think Ron had a big hand in that and he deserves credit for it.
- Matty is still struggling… Needs to throw strikes, sheesh.
- I was at trivia night at Drungos tonight (Austin bar, great small pub at 29th, right across from Texas French Bread) and we had " which NL hitter holds the record for most consecutive games with a hit… We didnt say Pete Rose, dumbasses.

I love Chris Davis but...
just how long does this go on? The one-game blips of success on his downward spiral don’t constitute justification for his still being here and not at OKC. Granted, his defense has been spectacular. But there’s a reason you want your first baseman to be threat, a real banger. I’ve never heard of one being played full-time with his defense as the reason.
I know Smoak is recovering from an oblique injury. And I know he probably isn’t ready. Neither was Andrus. I saw enough of Smoak in spring training to know he hits, he takes walks, and he’s a smooth operator at the bag.
Were I JD, as soon as Smoak is healthy, I’d make the switch. I would not be surprised if secretly, Davis would rather be at Frisco working this problem out rather than pulling his buddies down night after night.
Just the opinion of one back-seat general manager.

I don't want Smoak up
But if Davis isn’t hitting dramatically better by the end of the month, it might indeed be time to send him down, and work hard on getting Josh Willingham or Nick Johnson.
Not that we shouldn’t already be working hard on getting Willingham or Johnson in the first place.

Why?
Why trade away young players when you could have the answer in smoak?
by Horns130 on Jun 18, 2009 2:09 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because Smoak should come at his own pace so there's less of a chance he'll struggle like Davis is?
If the point is to find a guaranteed improvement for the rest of the season, I don’t know why people want to rush Smoak. He still has yet to sniff AAA, and has spent the last few weeks on the DL.
I’d rather dip into our system’s insane depth and get a lineup anchor like Willingham or Johnson – something that we need to be trading for anyway, if we’re really gonna go for the division this year – and kill two birds with one stone than risk rushing Smoak.

Im still kind of torn
on whether you bring up Smoak but remember that Davis was high K in the minors too. he is just adding to it in the majors with better pitchers. Smoak walks as much as he Ks in the minors so if he struggled in that dept you would probably see a a 2:1 ratio or something. I just think that Smoak is better equipped to handle being rushed and still have long lasting success than Davis is/was.

Yep.
Minor league numbers
Chris Davis 25 K% 7 BB% 6.4 HR%
Justin Smoak 15 K% 15 BB% 3.6 HR%
Its just going to be tough for Davis to have lots of success in the majors with high K rates and mediocre BB rates.

Smoak is not the answer
Send Davis down at the ASB for 2 weeks. Blalock can play 1B for the 10 games he would miss. If Davis’ bat comes around, problem solved. If not, then Blalock gets the chance to play everyday and maybe his bat gets going. If not, then you still have a week or so to trade for a firstbaseman. Or Royce Huffman.

So according to this thing named Texas Dawg
criticism in here thrown towards Wash is racially based? You know, cuz we’re in Texas.
If blacks really want to be viewed equally, they should want to be criticized equally. Otherwise they’re getting special treatment and really aren’t equal.

I was listening to the game tonight and it appears that Wash made some very questionable decisions but I’ll have to defer to others who actually watched the game.

I agree, even though, I definitely think he royally fucked up that ninth inning
but overall, I still like having him as our manager. He’s not the best at in game management, but he does alot of things that help even that out. Its hard for a manager to truely cost his team more than a couple wins total in a year with his in game managing, and i dont think Wash is even that terribly worse than some of the other managers in baseball in that regard. He makes up for it by getting his players to play hard for him and keeping the clubhouse well under control.
He still royally f’ed that ninth inning up though, the eddie in the 8th is questionable, but really, its hard to fault him when you dont wanna overuse the only two reliable guys we have in the pen. We need to get some better RP out there for me to even begin to question that descision. But im not gonna give him a free pass in the ninth, there were two poor moves he made, and i would have been ok with having one good move and one bad move (PH Andrus for Davis to simply give us a better shot of either bunting or putting it in play to advance the runner and then Subbing AJ for Omahh), but he had to go and screw it up on both accounts allowing a guy who almost 75% of the time is not going to move up the runner in CD hit.
Anyways, Im glad we won that so i dont have to be really pissed off at wash for a while b/c i genuinely like the guy. I just hope he doesnt keep doing things like that.

Let's be perfectly clear:
I’ve never accused you of racism in regards to your criticism of Washington. Not once.
In fact, I find it ironic that you’d make that claim. All I did (over at Newberg’s forum) was post a crack alluding to your old observation about Washington’s haircut. You’ve steadfastly denied that observation was racially motivated, and I’ve never argued to the contrary. Yet now you claim that I consider that observation “racist” ~ when, again, you insist it wasn’t racially motivated, and when I’ve never argued it was.
Appears as if you’ve got some issues you need to resolve.
by Snark on Jun 18, 2009 9:48 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And one quick addition:
What’s especially ironic (in the American sense, perhaps): when you were hammered after making the observation about Washington’s hairstyle on Newberg’s forum (and hammered right back, resulting in the deletion of the thread in question, which actually had some pretty good discussion of bunting strategy), I had a back-and-forth with Hodson and a couple other folks, asking them to drop the whole, “Josey is racist” bit.
But whatever suits your shtick.
by Snark on Jun 18, 2009 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
And the context of the discussion involving Washington and his haircut
came from a discussion that involved how superiors in the workforce talk and the appearance they have.
The Rangers were 7-16 at the time and a major league scout was quoted as saying he could never remember seeing a team that played the game in such “a loose, unfundamentally sound, sloppy style.”
I said that Washington (who absolutely kills the english language and is the most uneducated manager I can ever remember listening to) would probably get more respect if he spoke in a more educated manner and embraced “the Michael Jordan hairstyle.”
For whatever reason, black men (as opposed to NBA big men from Europe) look much better with shaved heads …is it racist to say that? So is it also racist to say that Orlando big man “Gortat” looked like he was from Mars with his shaved dome?
The thread was deleted but it didn’t stop Hodson from claiming from that moment forward that I supposedly said “Black men who wear afros are stupid.”
Of course everything Hodson had to say about the subject was allowed to run ad naseum on there because it portrayed the person who continually kicks little Donuts in the nuts in an especially negative light.
You knew the context of the conversation yet last month when the topic of racism raised it’s head again, you showed up with a snide little comment about me, Ron Washington and his haircut.
A real chickenshat thing to do because it perpetuates a myth and especially when you know I didn’t say it, Snark.

You're full of shit.
My comment on Newberg’s forum wasn’t in response to “the topic of racism.” It was in response to the posting of an A’s Nation evaluation of Washington as a manager. The evaluation was complimentary in the extreme:
This double-header was painful for me to watch, but not because the A’s lost twice, not because the A’s fell 10 games under .500, not because the A’s dropped to 10 games out of 1st place. The most painful part was the occasional shot in the dugout of Ron Washington, whose intelligence, intensity, and high expectations cannot be denied by anyone who has followed his career. The A’s aren’t going to win the West, so I hope the Rangers do – they were smart enough to hire Ron Washington to manage their team and they deserve, as he deserves, some success.
My comment:
Did they have anything to say about his hairstyle?
Race hadn’t been raised at all up to that point, as anyone can see by following the link above and reading the thread.
Your observations about Washington’s hairstyle and its relevance to his potential success as a manager were ~ and continue to be ~ moronic in the extreme. I’ll continue to make fun of those observations, because anything that stupid should be mocked mercilessly.
I have no idea if you’re racist or not ~ and for that matter, I don’t much care, unless you shove your views in my face.

Note: Not “racist in the extreme” ~ “moronic in the extreme.” If you read race into my comment, that’s your issue, not mine.
