New Rangers Top 20
The latest installment of my weekly ranking of the top 20 prospects in the Rangers’ farm system was posted this morning on the official Rangers website, www.texasrangers.com.
Here’s a direct link to the column:
Also, please note that the column is set up to allow fan comments at the bottom of the page.
(Please also note that I'm aware of the three mistakes. They weren't my doing. Trying to get them fixed.)
(Also, please don't let Finnerty see this. I don't want to get schooled.)

Not even a mention of Bleier…
Main’s place on the list is starting to look genuinely weird. Has he been injured more often than healthy as a pro? 30, 40% of the time? I at least want to know what’s wrong with him right now.

It's better news than I'd feared.
(And I probably shouldn’t have left Bleier off this time. Felt I needed to get MDLS in there.)

Not a bad list
and btw you will never be as great as Crops on the Farm. Your list merely is a commentary on what happened, Finnerty’s list tells us what is GOING to happen :-). Im sorry Jamey, you may have met your match haha

Its interesting to look at that list b/c while its been dissapointing to see some of the top guys
struggle, or just not utterly dominate, I think we may be even deeper this year than we where last year. Just looking at some of the players in the bottom half of that list, I think we may have some legitimate big leaguers in there. It will be interesting to see just how many true “prospects” we have to look after the season and get somewhat excited about. I like the development of Bianucci/smith/Moreland as viable corner OF in the future, that was something we had been lacking in.

wow on font
The South Atlantic League is hitting just .250 off Font, with only two home runs, and he’s set an impressive 44 hitters down on strikes in 39.1 innings, but he’s issued an unacceptable 30 walks.

Jamie
have you heard any scouting reports on Fabio Castillo’s stuff? Coming into the ‘08 season he had a plus FB/CB with sometimes nasty splitter, but reports were that he lost his feel for the curve, and it flattened out drastically. I’m glad you gave him some love, and I’ve been dying to hear a scouting report on his stuff this season.

Beltre, Moreland
Very disappointing the last couple of weeks. Every time I think he might be breaking out a little bit he slumps right back down.
I’ve long been driving the Moreland bus and I think he’s becoming a realistic candidate to be someone’s starting 1B or RF in the next year or so. A good trade chip if the Rangers don’t keep him. Part of me wants them to keep him just to have another guy with plate discipline in the lineup.

The only thing you crave is attention. I guess if you are reaching down from your level to attack me then your level must be closer to the ground than it has been in the past. Not sure why you need to poke at me though. Just because you put out a top 20 list for the Rangers doesnt make it any good. No need to start flaming me.

Mr. Newberg took it upon himself to fire an unprovoked shot at me in his post. I guess people missed that. I guess the great Newberg has enough credit to attack who he wants when he wants. All I did was counter that shot by firing one of my own at his top 20 list. I dont think the rankings are very good. Deal with it.

Ugh.
I can’t let this one slide. (Personality flaw, I guess.) I’m usually very, very good at not letting this stuff get to me, but not this time.
Fin, you seem to mean well. I actually kinda enjoy the subtle, sarcastic restraint in some of your posts on LSB. But your prospect evals are so offbase in most cases, not because your opinions themselves are whack (hey, I thought Dan Peltier would still be in the bigs today) but because your basis in almost every instance makes absolutely no sense.
I apologize to everyone else on this board for the comment at the end of my FanPost — I needed to get up to 75 words and make a bad choice. (Even D.A.Tron reacted in the spirit in which a similar comment was made a few weeks ago.)
I guess your assessment of it as an “unprovoked shot” shouldn’t surprise me, because you missed the point as badly as you miss on the significance of a player’s height and age and lord knows what other touchstones drive your exquisite prospect analysis.
I’ll give you this: I suspect AJM is a big fan, because in no time you’ve managed to trigger traffic diarrhea on his site every time you show up in a thread.

Count me in the pro-Miranda crowd too
I don’t get the analysis that she sings songs for 12 year-old girls. Songs for 12 year old girls are the shallow pop trash of Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc. that fit into the hollow “feel good” subgenre or the overly sappy “feel sad/sympathetic” subgenre.
Miranda is actually a legitimate songwriter and musician who writes and sings real country music topics. This is because, unlike many of her contemporaries, she actually comes from a rural background, so she has the real-life experiences to back up her words. The fact that she does that AND is hot too AND is a Texan is a perfect combo in my book.

Finnerty
I can’t speak for everyone with regards to what they like in their prospect analysis reading but there seems to be a few trends that apply to the most respected ones.
1. People want tangible proof on any analysis that tells us that a prospect is good or not. This obviously means using numbers such as statistics. People have varying opinions on which statistics they think are the best but any argument better have some numbers to back it up.
2. People also like to know about the things that don’t usually show up in sabermetrics like mechanics, competitiveness, athletic ability, tools, etc. That data HAS to come from someone that has actually seen these players firsthand. Quotes from multiple scouts as well as actually going to see them in person yourself would help your arguments exponentially. Jason Parks was awesome at providing this for BBTIA.
3. People do not like spelling or grammatical errors. It does not take very long to re-read something you wrote for these errors and letting someone else read it before you post it to your website.
These are just trends that seem to be prevalent in the most respected of blogs.
These things may not be your style. It is your blog. You can do whatever you want with it.
We as a fanbase do crave prospect analysis from multiple sources to see which names to pay particular attention to when we look at the box scores on shroom’s calendar each day. We just like to have certain things present in that analysis
It is a great thing to know the season for speech and the season for silence.

Good pt
We need a DH and 1B. Seems like a nice insurance policy if CD and Smoak dont workout at that tandem. Ive been really impressed with how Moreland seems to command the strike zone. He doesnt strike out a lot for minor lg power hitter.
by Michael Cave on Jun 18, 2009 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea, and by the sound of it, he makes good if not great contact going the other way (I think he hit a HR the opposite way the other night), doesnt strike out a whole lot
and judging by the amount of doubles, hits alot of line drives… We’ll see if that holds up the rest of the year.

Do you think that Zach gets an extended look back in the rotation?
Did his recent pretty dominant start open any eyes?
I love what he’s done as a RP, and thats more than likely gonna be his way to the Majors, but as the saying goes make ’em a SP until they prove they cant do it.
Judging by Zach’s track record, it seems like he’s struggled in his first stints at a new level, but gets better and better with time. It will be interesting to see how long it takes him to master the AA level.

gawd i hate to be a downer
but if that’s our top 20 prospects, we have taken a significant step back this year (at least from where we were last year and where I hoped we would be this year). Even the guys who have “graduated” have seen their value fall, so its not like we can play that card. Main has no business being in the top five of an elite farm system. We have oodles of intriguing young guys with lots of tools, but the results for many of them simply aren’t there yet. That could change quickly, though, and hopefully it will.

Andrus
is the obvious exception. Derrick Holland certainly hasn’t seen his value increase with his 6+ ERA, although he hasn’t exactly bombed either. And Teagarden hasn’t seen his value rise with his scarce playing time and lack of a HR.
I didn’t include Harrison because I didn’t think he maintained his rookie status this year. Nor did I include Davis.
God forbid anyone say anything but the highest praise for our farm system.

font, boscan, weiland, etc
Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

by knockoutking on Jun 19, 2009 8:03 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i would also be surprised
if they finish this year outside the top five, especially if they sign their top draft picks. But they haven’t had many players make huge strides this year like they saw last year with many of their young pitchers and a few of their top hitters. Smoak has been great when healthy, and Moreland, Smith and Bianucci could be for real, but their glut of pitchers has been very up and down. Beavan is the only one I can think of offhand who has exceeded expectations, unless you count someone like Kirkman or Phillips.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

That entire Hickory rotation is doing great
Maybe they are meeting some people’s expectations, but look at Perez, Boscan, Weiland, and Bleier. Font’s showing how dominant he can be though he definitely has to work on the control still. Brigham has also been great for the most part. Plus, there’s still a ton of depth throughout the system.

I don't give a flying fuck about people "insulting" our farm system.
I have a problem when people say ignorant shit.
(For instance: " have seen their value fall" and “hasn’t seen his value increase”… do you see the difference there?) (Cause there is one.)
I’d drop the persecution complex and the “Everyone is stupid but me” attitude, Clark-y boy.
It’s unbecoming on you.

i don't feel persecuted at all
If I didn’t enjoy coming here and posting, I wouldn’t do it. And i wouldn’t post on here if I thought I was speaking exclusively with stupid people. I was just commenting that I feel our farm system has taken a small, yet significant step back so far this year, and that the players that have graduated, with the exception of Andrus, have not taken a step forward with their development, either.
And I usually get your jokes (and even enjoy some of them), but I don’t get that last line. I certainly didn’t mean to get you all hot and bothered.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

It’s nice.
That’s all I was saying.
And, yah, the last line “God forbid anyone say anything but the highest praise for our farm system” that’s some haughty snark if ever I’ve heard it.
Also I like how you’ve backpedalled and now it’s a “Small but significant step back” as opposed to just a significant one.
Personally I disagree, but who cares!? I’m just a dumb-dumb who sits around clutching my blind love for Rangers prospects to my chest and face punching anyone who dares give them anything but the highest praise. (God forbid!)

I never took a shit on our farm. I do feel like they have taken a step back as a whole, but when you’re as highly regarded as we were this past offseason, that’s almost impossible to avoid.

Beltre
Anyone think that some anti-ADD medication may be in order? I know the beginning of last year, the talk of Clinton was that he just didn’t have concentration. Yeah, he’s still young for the league, but not by too much.
Not trying to create a crutch, but really, these monthly splits are worrisome.

My main thought with Beltre
It may hurt his prospect status but leave him in A+ another year if necessary.
I mean, outside of a few weeks this season, obviously there’s nothing to base a promotion on so far anyway. But he’s young.

Beltre
I would like to know a few things.
First, hows his defense been? I know the Bakersfield park is weird and apparently Borbon was basically standing on 2nd base so he could go back on balls last year.
And second, how are his at bats? The kid led the Midwest league last year in hits so its not like he can’t put bat on ball. My main worry is instead of going up and swinging at the first thing he sees like last year he is doing like coaches are telling him and watching more go by. That leads to deeper counts and then more strikeouts and more defensive swings which may not lead to hits.
Admitedly i am a huge Beltre fan but without seeing him I can only hope that his numbers are the only thing bad right now but he is actually making progress. Hopefully he has a good second half to the season and then next year can start out in Frisco as still a young guy and in a couple years be in Arlington
