Thursday a.m. Rangers things
And the Rangers are back to 10 games above .500, after last night's 10th inning win. Still 2 games up on Anaheim.
Anthony Andro writes that it was redemption for David Murphy last night, who came through in the 10th after struggling earlier in the game and not getting a bunt down in the 6th.
Jeff Miller writes that, although Pudge Rodriguez was honored last night, it was Jarrod Saltalamacchia who starred behind the plate, with a homer and a couple of big plays in the 9th that kept the score tied.
Salty's strong game comes on the heels of the news that Ron Washington plans on getting backup Taylor Teagarden more playing time.
Richard Durrett says that Murphy is still probably a fourth outfielder.
Jim Reeves has a column up on Ruben Sierra and the steroids issue, with Reeves defending Sierra against suggestions that he used PEDs.
Frankie Francisco pitches for Frisco on a rehab assignment tonight, and hopes to immediately start closing again once he is activated.

I haven't read the article
but why in the hell would anyone defend Sierra re: PED’s?
I'm Ron Burgundy?
With those young LA back in the last 80s/early 90s
guys it is a werid dynamic because a lot of them got to the bigs at a very young age. They definitely benefited from better facilities. How much of them getting that big (think sierra, pudge, and juan) was filling out and working out in better facilities year round OR did they take PEDs as well?
by Michael Cave on Jun 18, 2009 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions
I would say a combo of both
I just remember Sierra showing up at ST one year looking like he was going to have trouble wiping his own ass.
I'm Ron Burgundy?
Yeah Sierra
got HUGE one offseason. So did pudge and then Juan got really big and started having a lot of hamstring pulls, etc which sometimes can be a pretty good sign of taking roids because the muscles tighten up so much
by Michael Cave on Jun 18, 2009 9:33 AM CDT up reply actions
Won't the muscles also tighten up from simply lifting too much, stretching too little?
I may be mistaken, but I don’t think the presence of PEDs changes your body in a markedly different way than just training does, it just increases the speed at which you can change things. Over-reliance on lifting without flexibility training would result in all those pulls too. I think the difference would be that the loss of flexibility from the extra lifting would outstrip the normal amount of flexibility training.
Aside from your junk changing, of course.

I have to wear boots to sleep at night if I’ve worked out or ran that day. No wonder I’m single.
Also, I had a procedure in my left heel where they went in with a huge horse needle and poked around until they found the nerve (3 different nerves) and then put a heating element in there and burned the nerves…filled the surrounding area with water, then heated the water up to finish off the job. All of this without any anesthesia because, “they needed to know the exact worst location of pain.”
I have never wanted to stab another human being as much as I did for those 30 minutes of hell. And on top of that, I still haven’t had it done to the right heel.

Yes Bking they do
but most PED’s dehydrate the muscles. There needs to be massive amounts of water consumed just to maintain normal levels which was all pretty well known way back in the 90’s. Plus the players had and have extensive stretching exercises as part of their daily routine. Considering all the info available today, it seems obvious(i.e. drawing a conclusion) that half if not all the players on the team were taking something. As they say, “I’m just saying…”

Last night's win was a relief.
I may have a stroke the day we’re only 1 game or, gasp! .5 game ahead of the Angels
She say she are the manager.
here's the tough part for me
we have known all along (before/during this season) that LAA was/is the best team in the division. texas has been blessed with their own good play, combined w/ LAA’s bad play. i was struggling to get ESPN standings to work, but it looks like TEX is 4.5 games better than last year on same date (yesterday) and LAA is 4.5 games worse. LAA just swept SF, and TEX won’t be able to do that – specifically cain/holland looks insurmountable. TEX lost 2 of 3 at home to dodgers. LAA certainly won’t do worse. i see an Angels team that is playing a lot better and a TEX team that is flattening out. we BADLY need the sweep today, but i definitely see LAA in the passing lane.

That will be key..
We have something like 16 games remaining against them. That will most likely decide things.

There is not much to talk about here
Salty's defense really looked great last night
But I don’t really think hitting a home run and then striking out three times qualifies as a strong game.
If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339
Huh?
His defense was literally game-changing. He had as much to do with that win as any other player last night, a game that put the exclamation point on how much Salty’s defense has improved. I suppose it would be nice if he hadn’t struck out 3 times, but that’s a pretty odd thing to focus on for this particular game.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
His defense last night was great
I’m glad he’s improved in that area. Very glad.
Now that he’s proven he can be a more than adequate option defensively now, however, he needs to hit, or at least get back to where he was last year, getting on base via the walk. He’s got an OBP of .250 his last 12 games, and a dinger and three K’s does nothing to help that.
I still really like the guy, but it’s time for some tough love. Start getting on base at an acceptable clip or die.
If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339
I'll take
a HR and 3 K’s every night, though I agree he needs to get the OBP higher.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
A HR and 3 K's would be fine if he where Chris Davis
But he’s not. A middling (at best) power guy like Salty needs to have at least a league average OBP, or he’s not going to be more of a drain on the offense than whatever power he has is worth.
If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball. - Section 339
Not much you can do
The only possible action is to play Teagarden more, which is no guarantee for too much improvement. Another problem is if you play Teagarden now, what will you do with Salty now and in the future? If Teagarden struggles, then you end up switching back and forth. If he gives you pretty much what you expect from him (low-to-mid 700 OPS), do you give them even split on playing time? If Teagarden goes on a hot streak, do you make Salty the backup for the rest of the season? What about next season and so on?
I think the organization feels that they “know” more about Teagarden than they do about Salty, so I’d prefer that they find out everything they need to know this year. Keep doing what they have been doing for the remainder of the season, then evaluate afterwards.
The more I watch them play
this season, the more equivalent I think they look. Salty has improved his defense to where he is an above average defensive catcher, but his bat is not much better than Teagarden’s. Weird how that has played out. If I am JD I hang on to both of them unless I am blown away with a pitching deal.
yeah I've been really disappointed how Salty has been at the plate this year
He’s still my choice to keep though, if I had to choose.
Honestly it is close to a coin flip for me
Salty’s age and purported offensive upside tip the scales ever so slightly in his favor for me. Plus the fact that he can show that much improvement defensively in one offseason. I thought his defense was abysmal last season- no way he guns down Bourn in the 9th inning if it was 2008.
Yep
He’s still got the tools and age advantage.
Now he just needs to use the fucking things.
Get on base or die, Salty.

Any game where you have a HR is a strong game
You’re over thinking things too much on yesterday’s game.
It looks like Salty’s done the same thing Laird did a couple of years ago where he spent the entire offseason worrying about his defense just to see his offense suffer the entire season. Hopefully, Salty can snap out of this earlier than Laird did.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

His only option
is to go to arb once he is arb eligible, and frankly, his numbers don’t warrant a big payday. However, even year to year, we control him until 2013 or so.
He is great when he is on his hot streaks, but over all, he appears to be a platoon only OF who will give you a sub 350 OBP and around an 800 OPS. Its good to have, but not really worth locking up long term unless you can do it cheaply.

My irritation stems from the fact I had typed a solid paragraph regarding Murphy’s difficulty hitting LHP in his career and this season in order to back up my claim that he’s no more than a 4th OF. The fact someone can overlook numbers and shout “lock him up! I need my jersey!” is just one of those things that makes me facepalm.

Well,
your original post talking about the “worthlessness” of Murphy was a little overstated. Donnie Sadler (.180/.268/.261 as a Ranger) was worthless, Murphy has a place on a major league team.

Well
First of all, you are assuming you get the bunt down, and the runner on third advances, neither of which is a given, no matter who you have up there (remember David Murphy in the 6th?).
Secondly, you are putting a runner on third with one out for Saltalamacchia, who is a high-K guy himself (and if you recall, he ended up striking out anyway).
With a runner on third and one out, you need the next batter to hit a medium-deep fly ball, or else there’s no advantage gained by bunting.
I just don’t see, in that situation, it was a good percentage move.

man on third also allows pass ball
among other bad things that can happen for the team in the field. a bunt creates an opportunity for fielding team to make error – more so than K which was most likely outcome or routine fly.

I disagree AJM
Who knows what the other 2 batters do if there is a man on third with one out. With the runner on second, the batters tried to get a hit possibly leading to the K’s. You make a valid point concerning CD’s ability to get the bunt down, but IMO it is something he must be able to do. Bunting is one of the easier things to do in this game. Every batter practices bunting during batting practice. He wouldn’t have been trying to bunt for a hit.

I almost always wince when the Rangers attempt to bunt,

That depends on your view of Andruw
If you see him as a hitter with a mid 800s OPS, then the pinch hitting makes perfect sense.
If you see him as a overachieving and/or slumping hitter, then it doesn’t.
Wash obviously believes in the former, which not at all surprising.
People can't get mad at Wash all the time
People get mad at Wash for “playing his gut” and going with supposedly hot batters when they aren’t markedly better. Then they get mad at Wash for going against the rugged veteran in favor of the better, albeit slumping, bat on the bench.
Go Rice Owls!
Well, we all want this mythical manager

Agree,
AJ has been sucking, and Omar has a chance for a big moment there, breaking the Aparicio record and winning the game. Wash doesn’t have a feel for the big moment.
yup..that would had been awesome. I hated the AJ move
cause they had both had some success, but AJ less experience in facing Verlander. So in that case I’d rather not waste the bench bat.
It’d be nice for Omar to break the record in SF though.
yeah
you have to think that if you were dead-set on bunting, bringing someone like Kevin Millwood up to bat who has years of bunting experience in the NL would be the way to go. That or Elvis, who has a chance to beat out the bunt to first.
I wasn’t paying attention to the game, but I don’t know if I would bunt with Davis. The 2nd to 3rd no-out bunt is I think an even money decision, but given that a> Davis probably hasn’t bunted more than a dozen times in his career and b> taking him out of the game would leave the team in worse shape in extras, I think you’re better off just praying that one of the next three batters gets a hit
Go Rice Owls!

Whether or not you bunt there,

The reason Washington didn’t pinch hit for davis is that he didn’t want to shatter his confidence even more….

Why not have Andrus pinch hit
and give him one swing to hit the ball behind the runner? If he falls behind in the count, you have him bunt.

personally
I don’t really care. If he did pinch hit to bunt and it didn’t work, we’d be talking about why he didn’t have Davis swing away. Idle conversation I suppose.

Who heard Mike Rhyner on play by play?
I missed this somehow but he apparently did play by play for a short time. Anyone hear it and how was the ’ole Grey Wolf?
He was pretty good actually.

Pretty good.
He did Roughriders games their first season, IIRC. He can certainly handle it well, the question is if he liked his gig.

I soo wanted lewin to ask him if he liked his gig
instead he asked if he could put his hand on his knee

There was a great awkward silence
When Lewin asked if he could put his hand on Rhynes leg.

A Jim Knox interview was going on at one point
with Rhynes still up there… I don’t remember the conversation line-by-line, but Jim Knox slipped in a “Rhyner’s dead”, and Mike I think replied “Yes he is”.
Anybody else
notice that Harrison and Teagarden didnt happen last night… interesting..
This is our year.

Todays a getaway day
Wash doesn’t like his catcher to catch both the getaway day and the first game of the next series so if Tea had caught last night he would also catch Friday. I don’t think Wash wants that regardless how much sense it made.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I don't think there is any kind of "plan" for the catchers.
Salty seems to get 80% of the starts regardless how well or poorly he’s playing.

I think that is the plan
Wash wants Salty playing more for whatever reason and so he does whatever it takes to make that happen. If that means Salty catches Harrison so he can catch the opener in SF then so be it

yeah..I was glad.
I’d like to see Tea a bit more but I hate the notion of Harrison having his own personal catcher.
Davis
When the hell is he going to learn to lay off that inside breaking ball? It drives me fucking crazy! Everyone in the park (except Davis) know it’s coming when he gets 2 strikes! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

only 1 K last night
and I believe it was on a high FB. He is getting better with his pitch recognition lately.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
I agree
but still……you’d have to think that the tape would show they are consistently throwing him that pitch and he cannot hit it. Lay off dude….get a good look at it for a while

Rangers interested in Brad Penny
I think JD’s doing this to spite all the "when we gon’ get sum pitchin’ in here" idiots.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"~ RCCook.
No
Boston newspapers are trying to stir up trade interest in the perennial “We need pitching” Texas Rangers. I’m surprised the article doesn’t say “Texas has offered their nice prospect Justin Smoak, but Boston is probably going to hold out for someone ready to join the major league club, like Elvis Andrus.”
Go Rice Owls!
interesting theory
and why not use the #1 system in baseball to up the price?

Ugh
If we trade away a package of mid-level prospects it better be for Nick Johnson and not another starter who doesn’t strike hardly anyone out.

Reminds me of the Bobby Witt acquisition in 95.
So, so mediocre. Only makes sense if he comes cheap.
The most you can say is he’d probably perform better than Holland in the rotation the rest of the year.

I don't think that's more than a 50-50 shot
Holland’s gotten a lot of his rookie mistakes out of the way. He’s going to be learning and adjusting this entire season. From this point on, I’d take Holland’s talent over Penny.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

Pass on Penny
Unless the price is ridiculously cheap- which it never is with Boston. If I were Boston I’d hang on to him- Dice-K has not been good this year, and Smoltz has yet to make a start.
OT: John Mayberry Jr called up
Raul Ibanez to the DL with groin strain
Sucks for the Phils
Ibanez has been insane this year.
He’s even been good at defense.
Dear Salty: get on base or die.

also tend to get pure breed dogs, most people just never think to check for one at a shelter

He does animal rescue stuff… basically, animals over at animal control that are crippled but otherwise adoptable, he takes back to his hospital, amputates their limb or whatever, and then adopts them out. He says that he’s never been bitten by a handicapped animal, because people are nicer to them.

wild donkeys caught on BLM land can’t be slaughtered. So they have wild donkeys that they’ll pay people to take, but they’re not particularly… friendly. So they need to be “gentled” so they can be adopted.

have you ever seen that episode of Reno 911 where Jones is doing the PSA for the animal shelter? Also, Diablo doesn’t like black people very much.”
