Nor do I.

Even with him, this thing needs a different approach. As tired as that sounds, it’s so true. We need an OBP acquisition in the worst way.

I guess Johnson is the OBP du jour.

I’m sure others will be out there eventually. I’m terrible at trade propositions.

What was/is Washington supposed to do about a game like tonight’s?

This team is what it is. It has holes in every facet of the game. Some games it has the ability to overcome those flaws manifesting repeatedly; some games they’re simply hugely exposed. Tonight’s game was one of the latter.

Honest question here, if you please...

1. Last year, people were up in arms because young, overmatched or just plain bad pitchers performed poorly and wanted Connor’s head on a platter.
2. Wash gets hammered for something everytime the team loses, even for not ranting and raving like a lunatic.
BUT, 3. every season except last(which he missed most of), people complain about the hitter’s ability to get on base, the number of K’s, hitting with RISP, yet no ever questions Jaramillo and his approach.

Can someone please explain this to me?

People on Rangers forums, including this one, question Jaramillo all the time.

Typically, after a loss in which the Rangers offense didn’t perform well.

I've never seen it, I guess

Seems like after a decade of the same “big bang” approach, people would be more fed up with it. Even in the playoffs vs the Yankees, the offense was the problem, IIRC.

Because folks hammer Washington even when there's no real reason to do so.

Like tonight, for example. It gets old, and worse, it dilutes the legit criticism that Washington should take for some of his bone-headed in-game moves.

I can’t imagine what would happen if Jaramillo started taking that much shit. (Actually, I can: it’d be Connor, Mark II.)

by Snark on Jun 18, 2009 11:56 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with that

but he deserves a fair dose of criticism-this is getting ridiculous. No approach, so situational hitting, no 2-strike approach, no hitter willing to give himself up to move runners-it is pathetic to watch right now.

I sure wouldn't mind.

Cleveland got him pretty cheap. A rookie league pitcher, Class A pitcher, AA 25 yr. old reliever. I don’t think any of them have real significance.

I love D-Ro, and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him back here if the cost was cheap

But I don’t know that he’s really the catalyst we need in the lineup. He’d be an upgrade over Blalock if all we’re looking for is a cheap stopgap at first base, but I think if we’re gonna try and upgrade 1B/DH we might as well go for the gusto and get the kind of hitter we really need.

Get on base or die, Salty.

I'd like to get Adam LaRoche.

He’s got a nice OBP and a swing for the BPiA. He’ll be a free agent this offseason, and could probably return a decent draft pick to help offset what we’d be giving up.

Eh, not a bad name

I’m still in love with Josh Willingham, but if the Pirates don’t try to oversell on him he’d be a nice pickup, I guess.

we had D-Ro here but nearly all here thought he was over priced and did not think he would be “Good” enough for what he was gonna ask for and get. So, he went away. In my mind, that is the same thinking that let Pudge get away. No one could believe that he would or could still catch as many games as he did and still be effective. Granted his shelf live might be approaching its “sell by date” now. Still he has played at a very high level since he left here.

I don't remember it that way.....

I remember he was essentially a man without a position.

Tex -1b
Kinsler – 2b
Young – ss
Hank – 3b

I guess we could have stuck him in left.

Yeah, I know.

I was just being sarcastic. I kind of doubt D-Ro would’ve wanted to be a starting OF anyway. I think he wanted to start at an infield position, didn’t he?

you can damn well bet I’ll never renew my season tickets and will tell rangers mangement to go to hell. i’m tired of the insanity with supporting this team

lineup

Murphy (.379 OBP) should bat 2nd against RHP, Andrus (.377 OBP) should bat 2nd against LHP.

On the contrary

I think they should lead off, and Kinsler should move down to second against righties, and maybe hit cleanup vs. lefties.

And man, looking an Kinsler’s splits just now I had no idea he’s been this bad against RHP’s this year: .227/.317/.426 (743 OPS). Jesus. That needs to improve.

the thing that pisses me off

about Kinsler is that he appears to be trying to yank a homer to LF every at bat. How often does he drive the ball to RF? Someone as good as he is has no business having a .267 BA, which is dragging down his OBP.

Yeah, he's become a dead-pull hitter

And he’s really got no business leading off with that approach, and that split against RHP’s. Only thing is, we don’t have hardly any other viable leadoff options…

Wasn't that the case later on in 2007?

He was pulling everything back then. Then apparently he was told by teammates to go the other way more often in 2008 and of course, he really flourished. But now again…
