OT: PIZZA. DOWNTOWN. GOOD.  DELIVERY

I live just barely south of Downtown in a very large apartment building situated on Lamar Street, and yet I cannot find one decent place that will deliver here.  I used to get my pizza from Carmine's, a little place on San Jacinto.  But they've changed their ingredients or something and it's not good anymore.

It's my God given right as a Murican to be able to order decent NY style pizza and have it delivered to my door if I want to pay for it.  And I do, yet I cannot find the place.  I've searched Yelp.  I've talked to friends but they have their heads up Zini's ass, and that's horrible pizza.  I know some of you have to work downtown and you have to know of a good place.

Gotta bum ankle.  Don't really feel like driving to go get it.

You can complain all you want about me making this fan post, but I do not care.  Worse tripe has littered the fanposts lately and hell I'll even delete this one if I get an answer.

Thanks.

I've eaten there while in the neighborhood

It’s awful. Too much sauce. NY style doesn’t have too much sauce. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Nope. Sure didn't.

I’m beginning to think it doesn’t exist. There’s a place over by Baylor Med that’s supposedly awesome but I called and they won’t deliver here. Why I don’t know. It’s not very far away.

Really jonesing for a pizza right now. I’d rather go down to the basement and buy a Totinos than eat most of the shit out there.

More bitching

Seriously, there’s nothing to eat around here unless you want to eat at a sit down restaurant. It’s not just pizza. There’s nothing to eat around here. There’s not even a grocery store nearby unless you count that atrocity called Urban Market. It’s no wonder Downtown’s so dead. I think I’ll move out of here when my lease is up.

by Black Francis on Jun 19, 2009 7:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Downtown

those are all reasons why downtown dallas will never thrive as an urban living environment. Theres just NOTHING there for daily things such as picking up food, or going to a good grocery store.

There's a half dozen drug stores and a million restaurants. Bars a plenty

Liquor store? No problem. Groceries wouldn’t be such a big deal if I lived in downtown proper or uptown. There are a couple of supermarkets in Oak Lawn, but due to traffic they’re hard to get to from here.

I think it’s the city. There’s a lot of people living downtown now. Probably more than ever before. Who knows how many. Take this for an example. In the basement of my building there used to be a convenience store. Well, Urban Market leased the space after that but then it took them months and months to open just because they wanted to have a deli counter. Something to do with the permits. They don’t even make the food there…they bring that from their store downtown. So I blame the city.

similar conundrum here

I live by SMU and I hate Campisi’s pizza.

I love Louie’s but they don’t deliver :(

I like campisi's

It’s different at the very least, and the ambiance of that place rules. But it gives me agita something fierce.

crust

i hate their crust

for being a thin crust pizza, its not even crispy

but then again, i usually get it from the kroger campisis

by kumizi on Jun 19, 2009 8:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah go across the street to the real campisis.

If it’s the crust that’s your problem, it likely won’t be anymore. Campisis, to me, just has a weird taste. I sort of like it but lots of people don’t, and like I said it gives my stomach hell so I can’t eat it anyway.

I was telling you there was, but it’s been nine years since I lived there so it’s hard to remember what the places names were. I lived in Arlington and worked on the hill. Never had trouble finding a slice or a whole pie.

The only one I'm sure of is in Allen.

I thought there was one in the Downtown area. I may be mistaken. I much prefer it to the pizza from the Carmine’s near UTD (not sure if they’re the same family/chain).

Nah there are two carmines.

One is separate and has a couple of locations. The other is just one place downtown.

There is a Grimaldis

in west village. In the new section they built out across the street from the main little hub where mi cocina and taco diner is. Not a whole lot in terms of selection and toppings, but a good pizza nonetheless.

Also if you like campisis try Pregos. They used to work together and broke off, very similar restaurant and pizza (and crab claws) except the pizza has a little extra seasoning that I think makes a big difference. Used to work at the one on Trinity Springs a couple of years ago before it closed down. The original is off greenville I believe.

Cafe Roma is a tiny franchise style thing.

Same as Napoli’s.

The Grimaldi’s I speak of is in the Market Street shopping area just off 75. I can’t remember the cross street.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 21, 2009 12:54 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking about trying the Cafe Roma in Sachse today.

Would you recommend? I’m not a big fan of Napoli’s, if that’s what it’s like.

"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."

by scoop16 on Jun 21, 2009 1:05 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm 95% certain it's the same stuff.

I tend to like Napoli’s (specifically the one near Plano East) a bit more than Cafe Roma, but that’s probably just small variations in the amount of sauce and number of toppings and ovens, etc.

There’s a similar restaurant in Wylie near 78 and Brown, but I don’t remember what it’s called.

by NoNameOnCard on Jun 21, 2009 1:28 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've gotten good slices @ Schiano's

It’s on the NW corner of Los Rios and Renner, a couple miles south of that Napoli’s. They have the same issue w/ me, make sure you tell them you don’t want the extra cheese they put on the toppings for individual slices. Can’t stand that. Anyway, it suffices for NY style, but still not the real McCoy.

grimaldis

west village is in between blackburn and lemon off of 75. They built a new phase across the street behind where the borders is. They have a few restaurants including grimaldis and a wine bar over there.

I think they’re pretty good if you haven’t tried them. Now and then they’ll put some menu fliers around here. I don’t know what was up with the last pie I got from them but it seems they’ve straightened out that issue except that the crust still isn’t quite right. You may like it. It passes in my book.

I have a question

Were there some pizza places and grocery stores near you when you moved there that have since closed down? If so, then that sucks.

If not, then it’s your own damn fault for moving to an area devoid of things you apparently want to have close to you.

by DaheelzCM on Jun 20, 2009 9:16 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Well

I bitch about not being near a grocery store, but in reality they’re not that far away in terms of miles. Not at all, in fact. First there was the Urban Market downtown that I knew about. It ended up that I just didn’t like that place. Then there’s a Tom Thumb not too far away in Oak Cliff, but to get there actually takes 20 minutes, and they don’t have a lot of things I like. There’s a Minyards in the Fair Park area I can actually drive to in under ten minutes, but when I go there I always feel like I will have to kill someone to get out alive. Place is fucking crazy.

So normally when I go to the grocery store it’s at the end of a workday and I go to the Kroger at the corner of Mockingbird and Greenville, which is pretty far if there’s traffic on Central Expressway. And when is there not traffic on central expressway? But it’s a fine establishment and that’s usually where I go. In the winter it’s not really a problem but you can forget about buying frozen stuff in the summer because it’s not going to make it to my place.

And like I said, there are supermarkets uptown and in Oak Lawn, too, and obviously those are also close in terms of distance. But it takes forever and ever to drive to one because you have to stop for every fucking traffic light in between here and there.

Anyway when you know things are close by and you move into a place but it turns out that it takes forever to get to any of them, I don’t really think that’s my “fault”. I have never lived in Dallas proper before. I was real familiar with it and knew where shit was in general, but I didn’t know what it would be like to live in a place day to day. A lot of times you’re just can’t know until you move in.

I did know there wasn’t much fast food around here, but that doesn’t bother me that much because I don’t like to eat fast food a lot. There is the night every now and then that I’d like to have a Whataburger, but the closest one is near the Citiplace tower. Not far, but again, you need Central EXY to be clear in order to get there in a reasonable amount of time and that’s a gamble. No big deal, though. I look at the lack of fast food options to be an advantage rather than a disadvantage most of the time.

But I think if you were to move to any downtown area in the United States of America, you’d think you could find more than one decent option for delivered pizza. It’s not like there aren’t pizza places near by that deliver. For some fucking reason they won’t deliver here is all. That’s not something you can find out before moving in, either.

And there’s also the fact that the same group that owns this building owns just about the entire fucking neighborhood, and when I moved in they said there was a lot of development in the works. All I’ve seen is demolition, a dallas community college campus move in, and that’s it. Nothing has been built that hadn’t been started when I moved in two years ago, and that’s a condo tower. The rest is just a bunch of empty buildings and vacant lots. But they said and even showed me some site plans of things to come that just never came.

But I guess that’s one reason my rent has only gone up $10 a month since I’ve lived here so you take the good with the bad. With pizza, however, I have a God given right as a Murican to it and you can’t say that I or anyone else in this building doesn’t. Don’t live in fucking Belarus.

Picassos

is very good, but very different. You have to try it a couple times to find what you like. Not traditional pizza in the slightest. I tried the buttercrust or whatever it is cause I figured it was closest to normal and did not care for it at all, too much for me in a crust. Then I randomly tried deep dish even though I am not a fan of deep dish pizza usually and it was awesome. They also have a ton of toppings, I mean a ton. Have had some delivery problems with the north dallas location and they didnt handle it well (kind of a stickler for me cause I used to do that in college). Ironically even for delivery they have really good ribs.

I will say that it is pretty expensive. There are a couple of locations and I think there is one around oak lawn and blackburn, not sure if they would deliver to downtown though. Also a great pizza place is Fireside Pies. I am almost positive they don’t deliver but it is much better to eat there anyways, as I’ve had the takeout and it was not as good. There are two locations, one at legacy and the tollway and one at 75 and knox henderson. I would try that for sure when your ankle heals, or for anyone else when you get a chance.

for the record

im eating a totinos right now. it could never compare to a real prepared pizza, but for a buck twenty-five its pretty damn solid.

i generally concur

but for affordability and a more reasonable portion, the party pizza is a surprisingly appealing treat.

The $1.25 isn't bad...

but the saturated fat and sodium more than make up the difference.

Oh yeah. 88cent for whole pineapples, woah...I bought two.

I’m gonna grill some hunks tonight, quite good that way actually.

Their handmade daily sausage is great too, 1.99# right now, always get the spicy.

Papa Murphy's

Chain that sells bake-at-home pies.

Just tried it for the first time today, got the stuffed pizza and it was damn impressive.

There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

They're really big...

out here in Salt Lake. Along with a local pizza place called “The Pie” that started up on the campus of the U of U.

Both are very good pizza places.

ugh....really?

I think they are pretty much terrible. That’s the pizza I would buy (because it’s cheap) for the babysitter and my 4 year old.

Here is a general rule of thumb, if it bakes in your home oven it’s not good pizza. It’s edible, it’s probably cheap, and it’ll do….but don’t mistake that for good.

Seriously?

That is a giant building and does anyone know what you look like?

Get a grip.

by FuturePants on Jun 23, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not to mention you said where you live.

How else would I know? I don’t know you – you explained where you live. Only thing there is the Southside on Lamar.

I'm not pissed I was just hoping it would get deleted.

1. It’s a giant building but there are others in the area that are pretty big, too.
2. Actually it would be very easy for anyone to find out what I look like.
3. I don’t think I’ve ever came out and said on here the name of the building in which I live. There are enough hints around that a smart person could figure it out, and that’s what I figured you did. It’s the not-so-smart people I don’t want knowing where I live, though.

But now that I think about it, I don’t really care. That blog in my signature? First three numbers are my apartment number. If any of you motherfuckers are crazy enough, bring it on! haha. (I’m talking to you, Josey Wales — make my day)

Seriously I don’t care. I was just taken aback a little when I saw it there in print. No worries.
