Brandon Boggs is in NYC, Guillermo Moscoso is not
Jeff Wilson reports that Brandon Boggs is in New York City and at the stadium...if the Rangers decide Josh Hamilton needs to go to the disabled list, Boggs will be able to be activated for tonight's game.
Hamilton's appointment with the hernia doctor was at 2 p.m., so he's not going to start tonight regardless.
Wilson also indicates that Guillermo Moscoso has returned to Oklahoma City, as he's being optioned to make room for Vicente Padilla on the 25 man roster. Padilla is being activated from the disabled list to make the start tonight.

Interesting
Might not be the worst thing in the world to have Boggs up during this stretch. He could teach Byrd how to take a pitch and maybe even a walk.
It is a great thing to know the season for speech and the season for silence.

Byrd
He did have 46 walks last year (one for every 10 AB’s) and a .380 OBP, so it’s not like he doesn’t possess the ability to take a pitch.

This year
he is pretty hacktastic. I have no idea what happened to a lot of players on this team this year whose walk rate has tanked.

Unfortunately,
we don’t have the soft part of the schedule coming up. I suspect this next week is gonna hurt a little.
2-4 will be a nice week.

The next two weeks...
will show us the way. How good are we? On the road? Against great pitching?
But what a ride the last month has been!

I'm not expecting
much from our offense. Hopefully they can explode enough for a game or 2.

How does that explain these walk rates--
Player 2008 2009
Blalock 6.8% 3.5%
Byrd 10% 3.6%
Cruz 12.8% 9.5%
Hamilton 9.1% 6.5%
Salty 13.5% 7.4%
Young 7.8% 6.7%
Only Kinsler’s Teagarden’s and Murphy’s walk rate is up.

Bradley being here somehow magically made every other player take more walks. I don’t buy it.

Last year
was unusually good, some of these guys just suck at taking pitches or are naturally very aggressive, some of them are pressing, and Bradley plays a part as well.
Most stuff in baseball (and life) is a combination of factors, not one big thing we can easily point to. We spend far too much energy looking for one simplistic smoking gun.

better…but no, I don’t buy that he had a major impact on their walk rate.

And that was actually a bit of an abnormality for his career
The only other time he’s had a walk rate over 7.7% was 2006 when he played just 78 games for the Nats.

its not like we were getting a load of offensive production from him anyway yet. Hope he gets healthy and returns swinging like the 1st 1/2 of last year. I don’t think we will lose too much defensively, but still, this sucks a fat one

I imagine
it will be somewhere between those too. I doubt he can sustain the 1.3 OPS of April.
Luckily his walk rate is so high that even with a .245 average in May, he still delivers a .339 OBP, so he wasn’t a complete out machine like some have been.

Borbon's got a .366 OBP and .315 BA
over his past 450 at bats. Any chance they call him up for CF duties, or is it Boggs for good and he platoons LF with Murph, giving Byrd full time CF? That’s still only 4 outfielders if Jones is full time DH and Hank takes over at 1B (IF Davis is sent down at some point – which, in combination with losing Josh’s bat for a month or two, seems to be more of a necessity now)…any chance Golson or Borbon are called up soon as well? Or will they bring up Max or Smoak (not on the 40 man yet) to platoon at 1B/DH?
"Hang-Dai, Wu...Hang-Fu$&ing-Dai"
by Walter Sobchak on Jun 2, 2009 5:06 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
I think if Josh...
has a full blown sports hernia and will be out at leat two months then it could be Borbon’s time in CF. A lot will depened on how much time Hamilton misses in my eyes. The Rangers still have to find playing time for Cruz, Byrd, Jones, and Murphy (who has played much better lately) so Boggs may not get a lot of playing time. Although I think him and Murphy could be a very nice platoon. Boggs and Borbon need to be ahead of Golson imo.
The other wild card here, as you mention, is the situation with Davis. If he ends up going down after say another month of struggling, then that puts Blalock at 1B and Jones at DH which would open up a lot more playing time for another OFer like Boggs or Borbon. A lot of things could happen in the next couple weeks.
I think MaxRam and Smoak need to both get healthy and rake for a month or so at OKC before they become and option. Just my opinion. I’m sure some would like to see Smoak skip OKC altogether.

I don't see Davis being demoted
Despite how ridiculous the strikeout thing has gotten. Smoak is hurt and Max Ramirez has actually been worse than Chris Davis.
I think Boggs is the correct choice to replace JH right now. I’d expect about a .340- .360 range OBP with SLG somewhere around .400 which makes him pretty similar to Murphy actually.
If JH is out for 2 months, I think Byrd will be fine holding down the fort in CF. But if not, and if Boggs gets off to a slow start, we’ll probably see Borbon.
I don’t think Golson has done anything to merit consideration for another callup.
ut that would still make himHe’ll probably I’d already consider him one of the better OBP guys on the roster and we one of the better OBP guys on the roster
