benmor,
I’m really proud of you for following thru and doing it right!!

Starting the day, there were 27 teams behind us.
How the hell did that happen?

And given that the Rangers are in SFO

Frisco might be better for him
Pitchers won’t be able to exploit his weaknesses and he can just worry about fixing his swing and building his confidence.

what about malibu grand prix?

this offense sucks
last time Rangers scored more than 6 runs
May 30
last time Rangers gave up 5 runs and won the game
May 22 vs Hou 6-5
This team is living off pitching right now. Thier pitchers are not that good. The only thing good that came from this game was Andus batting second. Now if we can just keep him away from Rudy.

Idiot.
Right, ignore a long track record of success because the offense has sucked lately. Genius. If the Rangers fired Jaramillo all of the players and other coaches would be extremely pissed, and the rest of the league would wonder what in the hell they were thinking.
But, at least you would have some satisfactory catharsis.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
On the other hand
I’m not sure the Rangers offense as a whole has ever produced up to its ability except for perhaps last year, when Jarimillo was absent for most of the season. Was that a coincidence? Maybe it was but what if it wasn’t? None of us can really tell, I guess.
He does seem to do well at reclamation projects and that can be very valuable to a team. You get a guy like Byrd or Matthews and turn them into productive players…there’s value in that. But at what point does the team decide it’s time to stress a smart hitting approach?
I’m still convinced that Hank Blalock, at his core, is a hell of a good hitter. Who is it that’s supposed to get him to ease of his swing and level it out a little? Who’s supposed to tell him that he has natural power and if he waits for his pitch to hit a line drive, the home runs will come? I mean there’s a problem with a player when he’s much better in his second or third season than he is as he approaches 30. Now he might be an example of a player who’s difficult to coach. Okay. So what about the rest of the damn team? To one extent or another all but a couple of them have developed the Blalock approach. Always behind in the count, getting themselves out, letting the opposing pitchers off easy…it’s a fucking mess to watch.
by Black Francis on Jun 20, 2009 11:59 AM CDT up reply actions
I'm fine with this line of thinking
but I suspect that the guy I replied to has nowhere near as much thought into this as you do. I agree that Jaramillo may be overrated, but I think Blalock is probably a lot more to blame than Jaramillo for how he turned out.
I find it difficult (not impossible) to believe that so many people in baseball respect Jaramillo and they’re all wrong. It’s not all the ballpark. I think the problem may be more of an organizational tendency to acquire and develop more aggressive hitters than something you can pin on Jaramillo. He is part of that tendency, and maybe he does need to go if they’re going to change that philosophy from top to bottom. But right now he’s awfully entrenched here, and they need to acquire different talent if they want more patient at bats.
Okay. So what about the rest of the damn team? To one extent or another all but a couple of them have developed the Blalock approach. Always behind in the count, getting themselves out, letting the opposing pitchers off easy…it’s a fucking mess to watch.
I agree, but I can’t think of any one of those players who was known for being a walk machine that suddenly changed upon arriving in Arlington. They are all aggressive swingers and getting rid of Jaramillo is not going to change that.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Last Year
…is evidence that they’re not all free swingers. That was a whole MLB season’s worth of proof that the same players can be more patient and get their pitch. I’m not saying they need to walk all the time. They just need to give the pitchers some opposition. They just lay down and take it like a $2 whore. You only have so many at-bats in a game, and you need to make them count. Don’t just sit back and rely on the long ball, which will very rarely come if you’re swinging at crap.
by Black Francis on Jun 20, 2009 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions
The difference between this years team
and last years teams has more to do with Batting Average than walks.
"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers
Whatever
The reason they’re not hitting like they did last year is because they’re not working the count. Failing to do that will result in fewer walks, but more importantly it will also result in getting shit pitches to hit, which of course results in popouts and groundouts and strikeouts and generally outs of all flavors.
by Black Francis on Jun 20, 2009 7:07 PM CDT up reply actions
Forgot to say
I think one of the reasons Jaramillo may be so respected are those reclamations. It’s pretty high profile thing when a guy suddenly becomes what he never has been, or gets back even a little bit of something he totally lost. Everybody in baseball notices.

Coming into tonight's game, Andrus had drawn all of 15 walks in 198 PA this season.
He’s struck out 25 times. His OBP was .325, with a BA of .260.
Kinsler, just by comparison, had 298 PA, and twice as many walks (30) against 38 Ks. His BA was .267, and his OBP was .343.
All of that’s without considering slugging.
I like Andrus’s play ~ a lot. But as the effusive praise gives way to exaggeration, I think we need to tap the brakes a bit.

Andrus is 20
Kinsler is not
theres your difference

I'm well aware of the age difference. That's not the point, here.
We’re not talking about potential. We’re talking about approaches. I think we’re going all hyperbolic about Andrus’ approach at the plate.

He seems to only really work the count vs. lefties though.
He’s got 10 walks in 62 PA’s against lefties against 5 walks in 136 PA’s against righties. Odd split, but he obviously see’s the ball much better against lefties than righties.

Nah, it's not worthless
You just have to look at it in conjunction with other stats like walk rates and OBP, to see what the guy’s doing with all the pitches he’s seeing. I mean when you strike out 97 times, you’re gonna see a fair amount of pitches.
Get on base or die, Salty.
"If you can't watch Holland and see that he's going to be awesome, you probably shouldn’t be watching baseball."
-Section 339
Yeah, it is worthless
Here’s a stat that is 100 times more useful in saying what is wrong with this club.
Batting Average.
Last year this team had the highest batting average in the AL, this year they are 9th highest.
There are obviously better stats than BA, but P/PA is such a useless pile of shit stat that BA towers over it. This team could have 1 P/PA if they had a high enough BA on their one freaking pitch.
"Go post a dinosaur in a gameday thread."-Finnerty.Fan
You're right. But Andrus has a 3.7 P/PA,
which is a direct measure of working the count.
Guess what? Davis is at 4.0, Cruz at 3.9, Kinsler at 3.8, and Young at 3.6.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
Couldn't that be because the pitchers are more willing to throw him strikes?

He sees all of 2.2 percent more pitches in the zone

He also swings at 3 percent fewer pitches in the zone

Two units of Elvis love for one redeemable coupon to permit Scott Feldman to get through a lineup multiple times. I screamed curses when he was left out there one inning too long. Unfortunately, my television does not transmit to AT&T Park.

Nah
I think you’re not looking at it the right way. You can’t really look at the numbers yet because Andrus is way out of his league as a hitter. He’ll never be as good as Kinsler even when he has Kinsler’s experience.
What people are saying is if talented players like Kinsler were willing to take the approach that Elvis has, they’d be better hitters for it. Andrus makes the other pitcher get him out most of the time. The other Rangers simply try to do too much.
by Black Francis on Jun 20, 2009 12:03 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you're not understanding what I'm saying.
Andrus had great ABs last night. And he’s had a good approach at the plate this season. But in terms of what people have been talking about ~ working counts, taking pitches, and so forth ~ he’s had his ups and downs, and I haven’t seen anything (on the field or in the stats) that leads me to believe Kinsler needs to “copy” what Andrus is doing in those aspects of the game. The same goes for some, though not all, of the other Rangers.
Now, granted, one thing Andrus has been doing that Kinsler is struggling with is going with the pitch and using the opposite field ~ but after looking at Andrus’ hit chart, I think this is also a bit overblown. I’d argue that if Kinsler’s going to model himself on another Ranger in this respect, it should be Young, not Andrus.
Look, I love Andrus. I’m just saying we need to tap the brakes a bit on lauding his approach as a team-wide paradigm.
Your 2009 Texas Rangers: Can't take a fucking to save their lives.
ok
Well maybe not Andrus’ approach specifically, but hopefully they watched last night and learned something. I doubt it, but I can hope.
There are only a few players I’ve seen who could swing at just about anything and still be productive. Pudge Rodriguez. Vladimir Guerrero. Most hitters will hit pitches in the strikezone better. Pretty simple shit. Easier said than done, but at least make an attempt to put the concept to work. Other teams do.

OT: remember when this community...
…voted Michael Main a better prospect than Elvis? Interesting discussion not that long ago here. Another one here.
Just thought it was interesting to look back at how Andrus was viewed around here just a few months ago. Plus it’s a nice distraction from this shitty spell right now.

I don't think too many people
anticipated how solid he’s been with the stick.
Remember to retire Fin's number, Mark.
Good stuff.
Especially by me.
Honestly I feel like I’m overranking putting him at #6 on my list.
I want him to be our next ace in waiting, and I think there’s a decent possibility he can be a guy like that.
I just haven’t seen enough to feel comfortable putting hi ahead of guys like Max and Andrus.
Lemme ask you this, where did you have him before Jason Parks and M.J. Hindman ran a dirty man-love train on him after fall instructs?
Obviously Max has struggled so far so that part of it makes me look not so smart (though I think Max will hit once he gets right, that’s neither here nor there), but I always felt like we were getting way too hot and bothered by all those glowing reports about Main making the leap in FIL.

a lot of people think more highly of Andrus now
than they did then. At least they should. I got a kick out of reading those threads, seems like longer ago than it actually was.

Scooter hitting 96 on the gun tonight
where the hell did that come?
made some good pitches that were absolutely hammered.
Hes hit 96 several times
Nothing new here
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
i haven't seen it
certainly not with that regularity. unless the gun was juiced. had his cutter at 93 pretty regularly. krukow gushing over his stuff.
Nadel and Barnett where musing that the gun might be juiced when Brian Wilson his 98 a couple times in the 9th inning
But who knows.

You’re right, it doesn’t really matter as long as they can get outs. It’s when they stop getting outs that it gets annoying.

I feel like I contributed to the "Andrus approach" debate,
which started in the GDT.
I, for one, was referring to Andrus’ approach at the plate in THIS game only. I recognize that Elvis isn’t the end-all-be-all P/PA guy, but in this game his approach was definitely indicative of what I’d like to see more of from the rest of the team.

Andrus looked good at the plate tonight, no doubt about it.

Maybe I'm wrong,
but his plate approach seems to get better every game.

I get so disappointed everytime I learn that Vizquel is playing in place of Elvis.
That speaks volumes about Elvis, or at least my man-crush on him.

Same.

I just don’t think he’s any kind of offensive catalyst, at least not yet.

He's had his ups and downs at the plate, even recently.
He’s 20 years old, so that’s to be expected. He’s already something special, and it’s spooky to think about what he could be in a few years…

I don't know which is worse......
that game or the fact I have 8 in-laws (5 kids) sitting in my living room right now, stuffing their faces with Kolaches, getting crumbs everywhere.
Sorry boys, the game hurts, but this kills.
I'm Ron Burgundy?
Well, I'm about to head out to my family reunion... 100 strong people, 80-90 of them I want nothing to do with, ever.
Ugh.
This is the biggest beating of the year, every year.
And this year it’s at my parents crib so I have to stay the whole fucking time.
I’m considering harming myself to get out of this.

Damn man
I have no idea what I’d do if I had to go to a family reunion of 100 people.
I think I’d run. You know, the hit the road with a suitcase and a gun and rob liquor stores all the way to the Mexican border kind of running.
