Saturday morning Rangers things
San Francisco is the new Detroit. Rangers are 0-9 there all-time.
Anthony Andro says the Rangers lost because the offense couldn't get runners home for third with less than two outs, and because Scott Feldman had his worst start of the year.
David Murphy and Elvis Andrus will be hitting in the #2 spot until Josh Hamilton comes back, and Frankie Francisco is expected to be activated today.
Andro says that C.J. Wilson being healthy in 2009 has made a huge difference.
Jennifer Floyd Engel has a column up saying she was wrong about Ron Washington, whose head she's been calling for since about a month into the 2007 season.

5 runs in 6 innings obviously isn't good.
But other than the meat ball he threw to Fred freaking Lewis I didn’t think Feldman pitcher poorly at all.
So there’s something kind of semi-positive.

watching Feldman last night
I agree, he looked pretty damn good – much better than his line. The curveball has come a long way. I really think he fits somewhere in the rotation for a long time here.
There's more to the picture than meets the eye.

Yeah
Last night was kind of makeup for all those jams Feldman wriggled out of in earlier starts. The Giants had more dinkass hits last night than Michael Jackson.

You know
A part of me has been wondering if picking up Wash’s option was the wrong thing to do, not from the standpoint of him not deserving it (well, he doesn’t, really, but that’s not what I’m getting at here) but from a standpoint of keeping his ass motivated.
He seemed to be doing a lot better when he was managing for his job.

I think its a coincidence
I don’t think the team wide batting slump is on Wash.
I think the bigger culprit is you had a few players sucking at the plate and trying to press, followed by Hamilton’s injury, followed by everyone else trying to press to pick up the slack. Everyone things they have to do it all, because they have no faith in their teammates.
I don’t think its on Ron though.

I'm not saying this slump is on Ron
Just that Ron’s not contributing too it in a positive way. Continuing to use Eddie Guardado in the late innings when his ass is inches away from the waiver wire is kind of stupid. And making a double switch so Chris Davis leads off the 9th inning when you’re down by 2 is borderline retarded.

I think some of the worst managing we've seen him do
is when his job security was uncertain. When there was heavy talk of him being fired, we’d see him making a whole bunch of unnecessary moves to try and save his job which would usually result in more losses.

I thought he did pretty well under fire this year, myself
His creative use of the late inning guys during our rise into first place was kind of impressive, at least for him.
Now that his top three late inning options are either on the DL or extremely overworked though, he’s having to rely on his middle relief corps – and instead of using his head, like he was with CJ/O’Day earlier this year when CJ couldn’t get righties out, he’s just gone back to the infamous gut and throws out whoever he likes the best. Hence, we keep seeing Eddie Guardado shitting all over the mound in the 8th inning.

He's not using his gut
He’s using his lack of options. With Frankie on the DL, he’s got CJ and O’Day as the good, safe options and Jennings as a good multi-inning guy (but hardly a shut down arm). You’re left with Guardado, Grilli, Moscoso, and Mathis. Grilli’s been getting plenty of playing time in, Mathis is a long-relief guy, and Moscoso is hardly any kind of guarantee to be great though I would like to see him more. This bullpen needs a healthy FX2 back so Guardado doesn’t have to be used in close games anymore, but there are going to be times when Wash has to put a less than desired pitcher into the game because of a simple lack of options. Plus, he can’t burn out CJ and O’Day by July.
On a sidenote, Yahoo’s Rangers depth chart has Guardado as our closer.
By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I can see the argument for Moscoso, but Mathis?
If you want to use Moscoso, I understand but don’t think you are talking about some guaranteed greatness from him right now. Mathis though is your long relief guy, the guy that’s supposed to be used when the game’s out of reach for one of the teams. I’m not trusting him in any kind of close game right now nor would I want him in that role since his main job is to take up some innings.

I think any lineup
with Young batting 3rd is silly. He’s never hit particularly well batting 3rd, and this year he has just been trash with runners on.

Usually the third place guy bats with less baserunners than the second, cleanup or even 5th place guys do
So actually, if you have to hit him in the heart of the order, 3 is probably where you want him, especially against RHP’s.

Is there anyone whose numbers suit their lineup spot in one of the worst slumps of their career?
You don’t go moving around your core lineup everytime someone slumps.
That said, kinsler 3rd whoever leadoff would make sense just in general, not because of the recent slump and I’d be fine if they did it.

I'm sorry...
but this team can’t win a pennant, even in a weak division, with the offense they have right now.
Salty and CD just don’t make enough contact.
Cruz and Kinsler are good offensive players, but very streaky.
Blalock and Byrd refuse to take a pitch.
Jones is looking more and more like he did last year.
Andrus continues to impress me, but how much more can we expect from him?
Young has been over-achieving, but can he keep it up?
It was maddening to watch this team hit in person and it hasn’t been any easier to watch on TV the last few days either. If the offense doesn’t pull their head out of their ass the Rangers will continue their slide and all we will hear about again is how they falter when the summer kicks in. Sigh.

The offense will turn it around. They may need to get rid of some of the boat anchors like Chris Davis, but it will eventually turn around.
I saw the Giants make the playoffs with Barry Bonds and a cast of midgets. This team can make it too.

I agree with SLC Ranger
The rangers run for this year is probably over, unless they can find a couple of pieces for the offense (Milton last year was that piece that made the offense click) Jones this year just not that guy, no one on this team hits in the clutch, something MY use to do every year, but no more, except for the youngster (Elvis) they have no eye at the plate. with an owner who will no longer do what it takes to win, this team will once again end up 2nd or 3rd in the AL West this year.

Fuck, it’s a team-wide hitting slump. Baseball has a helluva long season, and every team goes through crap like this. Gee, notice that the 28 million dollar man was benched yesterday? That this team playing above .500 ball without it’s two stars is admirable, and likely in the miracle category.
I’d say the manager is doing a great job playing the cards he has been dealt. Does he want to use Eddie in the 8th, likely not. Did Eddie blow the game-no, so STFU.

line up changes
Wash (probably with input from JD ) made his first change to the lineup in order to get the offense going. I am not sure how much of a difference it will make. What other changes do they need to make?
Call up Borbon and bat him leadoff and Kinsler 2nd?
Demote CD and let Blalock play 1B fulltime?
Get other players into the DH mix?

I'd be good with all three.
The third one coming in some sort of trade. However, I have to keep reminding myself we have the 4th best record in all of baseball. That’s astounding with this lineup, one semi-ace, and a middle of the road bullpen.
That’s the quandary – Has it been smoke and mirrors, so don’t sell prospects for this season? or Do we have a legitimate shot, so let’s not blow it, and let’s do something now?
The first 2 are worth a shot in my opinion, and wouldn’t affect any future plans. They’re gonna have to tell Wash to play Borbon everyday though.

I like it for us.
He’s got an affordable contract w/ an option for next year. I’d think they would want more, we’d be selling low w/ the possible exception of Kiker. I wonder if we threw in another sell-low guy(CD), they’d bite. That would leave Smoak 1B/ Martinez DH for ’10 w/ Blalock 1B for ’09.
I don’t think that would be kneejerking on CD either, that’s a solid, proven acquisition in return. This year’s first two picks will replace Kiker on the prospect list, Max doesn’t have a position here, and Beltre is a huge question mark. Which all makes me think if there’s another bidder, they’d want more.

if the offense continues to struggle through the upcoming series with the angels...
what do y’all think about calling up borbon to play in centerfield permanently and batting him leadoff with andrus second? I know this could be an obp nightmare, but it seemed to be very affective at frisco last year. I would then bat kinsler 3rd and cruz 4th until hamilton comes back. When he does come back, evaluate and then move one of borbon or andrus to the 9 hole and kinsler back the leadoff or 2 hole. If the offense is not going to hit, then you have to start infusing the lineup with speed and try to create havoc on the bases.

The Offense
The frustrating thing about this team is a) the inability to get runners in from 3rd with less than two outs, b) not scoring lead-off doubles, c) and the gigantic number of strikeouts.
Improving the efficiency of a) and b) while reducing the number c) would make the offense perform better. One could argue that c) directly influences a) and b). Therefore one solution to the problem would be to remove high strikeout players from the line-up.
Until this team fixes these problems, consistently beating good pitchers will be difficult.

One of the worst offenders
at knocking runners in is Mikey “Mr. Clutch” Young. I cringe every time he is up with runners in scoring position, because its basicly a guaranteed out.

Agree
With Hamilton out of the line-up, this team doesn’t have a true RBI man, although this year he wasn’t performing as an RBI man.
I still think RBIs are a valuable statistic (duck for cover). In the pre-steroid era, I defined a good RBI man as one with a RBI/HR ratio of >4.0. Tommy Herr had one of the best ratios one year when he drove in 100 runs with less than 10 HRs. I’m not sure what that ratio should be these days.

is why I don’t understand the argument sometimes bandied about, “An out is an out”.
Put the damn ball in play. A couple of flyouts after a leadoff double is fine. A strikeout and a flyout ain’t.

The argument "for" strikeouts
basicly just acknowledges that if you are patient, and waiting on your pitch, and are willing to draw a walk, you will sometimes strikeout when going to deep counts.
For folks that don’t walk much, and folks who just hack away, there isn’t anything good about strikeouts. However, power hitters who draw a lot of walks also tend to strike out a lot.
Mark McGwire struck out 21% of the time, but he was still productive with a near 400 OBP.
Unfortunately, for a guy like CD, there doesn’t seem to be the walks to offset the strikeouts.

True
It’s much more forgivable when a guy is getting on 40% of the time.
It’s been going on for quite a while now, but I still can’t accept it. What happened to shortening up with 2 strikes? I’m too dense to figure out what kind of production a bopper provides with 2 strikes as opposed to the ball in play guy. K’s/Power v. ball in play/lack of power?
Hell, being a Bonds fan spoiled me.

some stats to cry about
In June
Angels 11-5 5.6 runs/gm 4.3 RA/gm
Rangers 7-9 3.6 runs/gm 4.6 RA/gm
The Angels scored 6 or more runs in 8 games while giving up 5 or fewer runs in 10 games. It is 4 and 9 respectively for the Rangers.
I am not breaking any news here. We know the problems are with the offense. I just hope the pitching is still there when the bats get going.

Not Rangers-related, but Hicks-related
ESPN is reporting today that George Gillett, Hicks’ partner in Liverpool FC, has reached an agreement to sell the Montreal Canadiens for $550 million.
Like Hicks, Gillett was attempting to sell his interest in his North American club to raise money to pay off debts towards Liverpool. I don’t know that this has any effect on what Hicks is doing, but it should help get the Bank of Scotland at least partially off their backs.

Jeez, how much bigger must Liverpool be internationally.
Sold the freakin’ Canadiens? Kinda sad, giving up such a storied franchise, and one of the Original Six.

Liverpool
According to Forbes, they’re worth nearly as much as the Dallas Cowboys- right around $1 billion.
The local chapter of the supporters’ group regularly draws 25-30 people for matches, sometimes as many as 50-75 for matches against Manchester United or Chelsea. The Champions League final watching party at the AAC a couple years back drew several hundred people; I was at a watching party at the Londoner in Addison that day, and there were easily 200 in attendance. So you can imagine how popular a club they are internationally if they can draw like this here in Dallas.

Liverpool
Also likely costs more money to run though.
Fans there wont put up for going cheap on the transfers and they are demanding a new stadium that can compete with man-u in attendance.
Its going to be hard for hicks and gillett to outspend a man thats building the worlds most lavish yacht.
