Because Wash...

loves him some Jones, Murphy, and Byrd.

It drives me nuts. Boggs isn’t this teams savior, but he should at least be starting against lefties and be PHing more than he has been. Or how about even using him as a defensive replacement late in games for crying out loud.

Especially given that Boggs' strengths as a hitter

are exactly what this team needs right now- strike-zone management, OBP, and hitting lefties.

At least murph actually did something to get some fans with that great debut.

Why does boggs have such a following? He wasn’t exactly topping our prospect lists this offseason.

He should probably play more often against lefties, but it would just be by default, he doens’t have great lefty splits or anything.

the preceding post was a great success.

by DShep on Jun 20, 2009 11:12 AM CDT reply actions

He had pretty darn good lefty splits in the minors.

And he’s a patient hitter with plus defensive chops.

He strikes out too much and doesn’t have enough sock to ever be a real force out there, but he should be used more than he currently is, imo.

I think Jones is pretty close to being done, and we have three hitters (Murphy, Hankles and CD) who should never bat against a lefty.

But mostly it’s backup quarterback syndrome.

People are going to be really disappointed when Boggs starts playing more against lefties and doesn’t end up having an OPS in the .900s against them.

If he has a OPS

in the high 700s its still a massive upgrade over what Murphy does against lefties.

I'll take my chances with Murphy

To try and develop him into a decent hitter against lefties. I would like to see Murphy have one complete season in the Majors before forcing him into a full time platoon role. With his patience at the plate right now, I think he can develop into a mid .700 OPS against them. Boggs might still do better than that, but it isn’t going to be costing this team any games right now.

The guy that should be losing playing time to Boggs is Byrd and probably Jones too who isn’t really doing his job against lefties.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

I’ll take my chances with Murphy To try and develop him into a decent hitter against lefties.

Why?

He turns 28 at the end of the year — he’s only a year younger than Hank F. Blalock.

He didn’t hit lefties in the minors.

He isn’t hitting lefties in the majors.

He played against lefties quite a bit last year and wasn’t good against them, and has been every worse against them right now.

I don’t understand why people are so convinced there’s any sort of chance Murphy is going to be anything better than what he is, which is a 4th outfielder who should never play against a LHP.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2009 12:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Do we have to go over this each time?

He has a bit more than one season’s worth of playing time in the Majors and only has 189 PAs against lefties in the Majors. I don’t care that he’s turning 28 at the end of the year, I want him to be able to have one complete season in the Majors before putting him in a full time platoon role.

And using Murphy’s minor league numbers is far from relevant. The guy has been much better in the majors than he ever was in the minors. If you want to look at his minor league numbers, you would be expecting him to get much worse against righties too.

By 2028, Mark Teixeira will be in the HOF.

One quibble about use

Boggs in LF is a valid defensive replacement. Murph has one “off the scoreboard” catch to his credit, but has neither Boggs’ range nor arm. Any time you are ahead in a game in the 7th inning or beyond, a defensive replacement makes sense. I’d cast Boggs the far better all around player than Murph, statistics or no.

Boggs' Arm

Very few people have an arm like Boggs. The image below comes from a Hardball Times article from last year. Players that have a high vertical score exceed at throwing runners out. Players with a high horizontal score are good at holding runners. Boggs was pretty damn good last year.

by Excel Hearts Choi on Jun 20, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

So they ran on Boggs

an avg amout of time but he threw them out at an exceedingly high rate. Likewise, runners seldom took the extrea base on Ankiel but when they did the had avg success.

What reason is there to believe that Murphy will hit LHPs if given a full season in the majors playing every day?

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2009 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

I think it is the same thinking

that folks used to use on Blalock when he was a rookie and Buck sat him versus lefties.

"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers

by DJCahill on Jun 20, 2009 1:13 PM CDT up reply actions

I think that made more sense

Blalock was a very young player who was a top prospect coming up through the system, and appeared to be a star in the making.

Murphy is a guy who was a disappointment for several years, but has bounced back and carved out a career for himself as a 4th outfielder during what are his peak seasons.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2009 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

murphy isnt going to suddently turn into a lefty killer

its like the ppl who wanted elvis at AAA this year, its not like he was gonna learn how to play better defense

at this point, m urphy is what murphy is. a 4th oF.

Yeah,

I think its insanely wishful thinking to hope Murph will ever be worth a damn versus lefties. Stick him as a platoon OF though, and he looks OK.

"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers

by DJCahill on Jun 20, 2009 2:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Gagree

I understand the sentiment of giving Murph more time to develop as a full-time player, but the argument for it seems to boil down to ‘Maybe magic will happen and he’ll hit lefties good! Magic already happened when he got kinda good when he came here!’.

And his platoon BFF is on the roster right now- Boggsy and Murph is an awesome platoon set, until and unless Borbon forces his way into the everyday CF spot or Cruz drops off the face of the planet or gets traded.

The problem is Wash, Rudy, JD, or Nolan (or all of them) seem to be in the ‘Maybe magic will happen’ camp.

by Keynes on Jun 20, 2009 2:11 PM CDT up reply actions

His minor splits versus lefties

0.284/0.391/0.562 OPS 0.953

Its just plain silly not to have him in against lefties. I don’t think he’s gonna be an everyday starter or anything, but as bad as this team hits lefties, there is definitely a place for him til Hamilton gets back.

"I saw a soldier try to dig a foxhole with his bare hands. He didn't notice that he'd torn off all his fingernails. I got him out of there quickly; not for his sake, but for ours. Fear is poison in combat...destructive, contagious." - Band of Brothers

I had seen that he had meh splits this year in the minors and last year in the majors

And couldn’t remember where to see previous years minor league splits… obviously he did very well in those years. Thanks for the info.

That line is much more intriguing of course. Still, I don’t think its a great injustice that there have been 6-8 starts vs lefties he probably should have been in and wasn’t and its more about the guys we have being bad against lefties than any belief he will come in and help the offense.

the preceding post was a great success.

Serious question

Did Boggs do something to get in Washington’s doghouse? This year or last year? Or is Boggs truely just the 25th man on the roster that will only play if the Rangers are up or down by a dozen runs?

He certainly can’t be much worse than the bad streak the Rangers offense is having now, as you can’t go much lower.

by Mark from OC on Jun 20, 2009 11:40 AM CDT reply actions

He has got to be hurt

I swear Wash loved Boggs last year. I know he was hurt the beginning of the season, and I’ll bet money he is nursing some injury that is keeping Wash from running him out there more often.

Of course, I have no visible evidence or proof of this.

Well see, he's in the dugout

And drew a timely walk PH’ing in SFO last night. But there’s a cruely joke involved. Andruw Jones and David Murphy swiped a “Do Not Disturb” hotel door sign from the St. Francis, and sticky it to the dugout wall right above Boggs’ seat. And you know Wash, a tidy, law and order guy …. and courteous … does what the sign says.
