First of all, Davis needs to go down.

No more excuses. He can’t hack it in the majors right now, and he’s draining the life out of this already cathartic offense.

I’d send him down tomorrow if it where up to me. I’m done defending him.

Second, we need to bench Marlon fucking Byrd. He sucks donkey dick at getting on base.

Third… well, it’s still a bit too early to be pulling off any trades, but I think we need to try. Willingham is the ideal target, but he’s on the bereavment list because his brother just got killed in a car crash.

Pulling off a LaRoche/Snell deal is looking pretty appealing right about now.

You don’t give up the farm for the chance at having a chance this year. Don’t knee-jerk and give up too much, we’ve played that game before to disaster.

But you’re right that there are always people two steps ahead of the testers, and if Bonds wanted to get in touch with them I’m sure he’s got the connections to get the next level shit if he wanted it by the end of the day.

It was an innoucuous comment about them being douchebags, himself included.

It was meant as a sort of half-serious joke that some of the negative humor guys in the clubhouse took offense to.

It was nowhere near a blast.

Like when I walk up to a group of my friends and say, “What’s up, you donkey raping pieces of shit?”

I’m not actually accusing them of raping donkey or being shit pieces.

And it was NOT an example of someone “blasting” their own clubhouse.

It just wasn’t.

There was no harmful intent, and there was no hate behind the words.

Simply a problem of communicating between one generation (where douchebag means one thing) and another (where douchebag is a grave insult).

Hmmm.
"It’s frustrating," says C.J. Wilson, the 27-year-old Texas relief pitcher. "I’d say there are two reasons. One, there’s a general lack of education among us. But two — and most important — you’re talking about a population that makes a ton of money, so the ups and downs of the economy don’t impact whether we’re getting paid. Therefore, we often don’t care."

Wilson stares blankly when asked who among his teammates he can talk with about Decision ‘08.

"No one," he says. "I keep it to myself."
Come on man you have to admit the median or average guy in a baseball clubhouse does drive an SUV, drinks beer, golfs, likes college sports, chews or dips tobacco and is relatively a douchebag.

Good for you.

The first one, yah, maybe.

I think he’s making a salient point in the first part that’s made far worse by that last little comment about having no one he can talk to about the election.

The second comment was an off the cuff comment made when talking about the jock culture in the clubhouse and was taken way too seriously.

It’s the same kind of shit most of us would say about our co-workers if asked about them in an informal situation.

The only real problem there to me is that he made them in public and they were taken around to people who didn’t understand the context and then a big deal came out of it.

Stupid.

Mainly I think people just don’t like CJ the person for whatever reason so they project on him and take every opportunity to jump down his throat with shit like this and it makes me sick.

Oh, the political commentary

is definitely a salient point, and I’d imagine a fairly accurate one.

Hanrahan has an ugly ERA, but dude Ks guys, doesn’t walk all that many, and plays in front of an awful OF. That’s the type of guys you target so you don’t have to give up a core guy. Pittsburgh apparently has an elevated sense of their own player values, especially for a guy like Snell. He might've been hyped that way,

but the fact of the matter is he had all of a .351 OBP in 661 PA with the Nationals the year before the Rangers acquired him, and in his best year, he had a .380 OBP.

Johnson’s lifetime OBP is .399. The big question there is if he can stay healthy. And that’s a huge question.

The point is

that for a lot of teams, midseason additions are how they address weaknesses.

What is this team missing right now? I count – a consistent on base threat who can create opportunities for guys like Cruz and, eventually, Hamilton and another power threat beyond Nelson Cruz. If you add a player who addresses both those weaknesses you get better. I don’t think that’s a flawed conclusion.

you know

as nice as dealing for a bat sounds, we could get albert pujols in this thing and still be terrible. Seriously, our offense is awful right now top to bottom. I have been on the “lets be patient with Davis” bandwangon to this point. However, enough is enough. He must be sent down to regain his swing. I’m not too enthused about seeing blalock at first base on a day to day basis, but I really think this is the best thing for the club AND for Davis right now. Furthermore, i don’t really know there is much we can do to right this ship except hope that the players get out of this collective funk. JD is a badass GM, but you can’t go out and deal for two thirds of a new lineup. I’d just assume ride this out, maybe make a minor move to acquire a bat. If not, just see what happens w/ Blalock at first and Jones at DH most nights, with Boggs starting against lefties for Murphy and in place of Byrd much more often.

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:01 AM CDT reply actions

Not necessarily true about one or two guys turning a line up around

Milt and Josh in the middle of the lineup last year made everyone else better. The guys around them see better pitches, and the pitchers tend to labor trying to make perfect pitches when you have two guys back to back in a lineup that are what those two were last year

I used to shoot baskets

by SaltyDawg on Jun 21, 2009 12:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I think if you

eliminated some of the major suck, like Chris Davis, and add a real bat, like Nick Johnson, there would be a big impact.

I agree with that

You replace a .250ish OBP with a .400+ OBP and the entire lineup is going to benefit. Plus, there may be something to other guys seeing an intelligent approach like Johnson’s or Milt’s from last year and a light going off….some stark realization that working counts and getting into team’s bullpens makes things a lot easier

Davis should be on the farm by June 21.

by Mark from OC on Jun 21, 2009 1:13 AM CDT up reply actions

no doubt

that replacement makes a difference. But what i’m saying is that with how awful this offense has been top to bottom, that still won’t force a drastic upgrade to occur, which we desperately need.

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:15 AM CDT up reply actions

so where are you

suggesting we get two bats such as Hamilton and Bradley of last year? Thats my point, it is unrealistic and not going to happen

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Well I would suggest we will get a guy similar to Hamilton

when Josh Hamilton himself comes off the DL. Then, if you did manage to add Nick Johnson, you would be getting a guy similar to Milt last year…with a little less power.

Those two things would change the top 5 in the lineup from:
Kinsler, Murphy/Andrus. Young, Cruz, Byrd/Jones

to a top 5 in the lineup of:
Kinsler, Young, Hamilton, Cruz, Johnson

I would say that would have a pretty drastic effect on this offense

I used to shoot baskets

by SaltyDawg on Jun 21, 2009 12:21 AM CDT up reply actions

two points

1) Its a large assumption to think that Hamilton will come back from injury and hit like he did last year.

2) If we continue to be this poor offensively, it won’t matter when Hamilton comes back because we will be out of the race by then

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:24 AM CDT up reply actions

My point is less about where the Rangers finish this year

and more about the fact that one or two guys in the middle of a lineup can completely alter the fortunes of an offense. Hamilton has been playing hurt, so I don’t think it’s out of the question for him to come back after so much rest and have a hot streak or two in him. Even if he isn’t producing at a first half of 2008 clip, his presence alone makes a difference.

Ryan Ludwick has had a renaissance over the past few years…but if he isn’t behind Pujols in that lineup…the odds of that happening would be significantly less. Big time hitters in your lineup means everyone else gets better pitches and better situations to hit in.

I used to shoot baskets

by SaltyDawg on Jun 21, 2009 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

i'm not disputing

that one guy can make a difference. What i’m saying is our offense hasn’t been too great w/ hamilton in the lineup. Obviously, having him in the lineup does help things. However, his presence alone won’t make the difference needed with how poorly performance is right now

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Also

Hamilton has yet to show he can produce at the level he showed last year hitting in front of Bradley. No question he saw a lot more pitches to hit with Bradley at cleanup. This is why I’m not so sure he will perform like last year

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions

Hamilton

Even with his slow start…

In 35 games Hamilton played: 5.8 runs per game

In 32 games Hamilton hasn’t played: 3.94 runs per game

There is something to be said for a guy’s presence in the lineup. And if you can replace Davis’ .678 OPS with an .800+ OPS on top of getting Hamilton back…you are giving the offense a much better chance of having a 2008 look to it.

I used to shoot baskets

by SaltyDawg on Jun 21, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

okay

i haven’t disputed that his presence doesn’t make a difference. I do think you’re giving him too much credit for it though. This is more a byproduct of our offense simply not being very good than Hamilton being out IMO.

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:44 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess my question boils down to this

This lineup/offense sucks:
Kinsler
Murphy/Boggs
Young
Cruz
Blalock/Jones
Byrd
Salty/Tea
Davis
Andrus/Omar

Does this one?

Kinsler
Young
Hamilton
Cruz
Johnson
Jones/Blalock
Byrd/Murphy
Salty/Tea
Andrus/Omar

Maybe I do put too much stock into it…but I see that second lineup and envision everyone from top to bottom getting better pitches to hit. Not only that, but I see a top 5 in the order that is going to be penciled there everyday rather than a mix and mash grab bag. To me, two guys, in the right circumstance can completely change the complexion of a lineup. And Hamilton and Johnson (or to a lesser extent LaRoche) could be those guys.

I used to shoot baskets

by SaltyDawg on Jun 21, 2009 1:06 AM CDT up reply actions

Also, most of Hamilton's ABs this year have come with

Blalock or Jones behind him…now that Cruz has taken hold of the #4 spot, that gives Hamilton the protection he needs to see more fastballs. Other teams respect Nellie a lot more than Andruw or Hank

This may have been discussed in gameday

But I got out of my recliner and made coffee and updated a couple of data bases when I realized the game was over. Giving up an out to move Kinsler, by having Murphy bunt him over. We were not behind by a run, we were tied with no one out. Even if Murph GIDP’s the result is the same on the scoreboard. I would have watched the rest of the game had Murph got a hit, especially if it moved Kinsler to 3rd with nobody out. That would produce a run (I think MY went deep enough to RF).

Both Cain and Holland pitched will.

From everything we’ve been told the Rangers can’t take on any more salary, and it’s doubtful that any but the richest teams will eat salary for more/better prospects in return.

Just conjecture, but I imagine we’ll see Hamilton DHing alot when he comes back. So trading for a 1B/DH type doesn’t seem likely.

by erikj07 on Jun 21, 2009 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think

there’s much of a difference between getting his OB chops in AAA and in the MLB.

The main advantage offered by Borbon is that Wash, hopefully, won’t hit him near the top or middle of the lineup like he does with Byrd.

Having the Outmachine hitting 6 fucks this offense up big time.

agreed.

like i said earlier, id like to see Boggs in there for Byrd to see how he produces

Jesus

Some of you act like Byrd is the worst player in the world b/c he doesnt take walks…

I hate his OBP too but his near 300 avg is still very solid…didnt he come up with a big time clutch hit yesterday?

Clearly, he has been one of the worst players in the league….or youre wrong for being overly critical

Jaramillo

How on earth is he getting a free pass from fans and media right now? Can you imagine the uproar if the pitching was as dramatically underperforming? Actually, yes – I seem to remember constant calls for people’s heads the past 10 years.

suck

3 hits in 11?

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

You Guys

…are pretty funny.

I just got done watching the game on the ol’ DVR. No team in baseball was going to do anything against Cain tonight, and actually I thought I saw some halfway decent AB’s mixed in there, all things considered.

The way it ended kind of sucked, yeah. It was a good enough pitch to swing at, oddly enough, but it just hit the dirt in the worst way possible. The pen did pretty well.

You guys should look at the positives from this thing. Frank Frank’s back and apparently hasn’t lost a step. Holland looked pretty good. HIs curve looked really good tonight. And if the offense were as bad tonight as you guys are suggesting Cain would have had a CG. They put up a little bit of a fight tonight for a change.

by Black Francis on Jun 21, 2009 2:02 AM CDT reply actions

We haven't scored more than 6 runs since may 30th.

Our offense sucks right now. It doesn’t matter how good or bad the pitcher is. We’re not a good offense right now.

I'm just goofin' new boot goofin'

by iorange555 on Jun 21, 2009 2:11 AM CDT up reply actions

even if we couldnt' score off cain

we should have scored off the bullpen. if we are now a mediocre offensive club that can’t even get hits against the middle guys of an above average but not badass bullpen, we are screwed

"I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the [MLB] for guys to fall in love with [the Rangers’s] sloppy seconds." (thanks cstorm)

by ab03 on Jun 21, 2009 2:23 AM CDT up reply actions

They're not mediocre.

They’re worse than that, but I believe the Giants brought out there closer after Cain who was throwing some serious heat. The next guy (Romo?) had pretty good stuff. They worked him but just couldn’t get anything done.

by Black Francis on Jun 21, 2009 9:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree with this

Yes, the offense is bad right now, but Cain was on.

The team is in a terrible slump. Trading for a bat is going to cost, several other contenders would also like to add a bat and there aren’t that many available. Patience is probably the best course of action unless Daniels manages to get very creative.

Can I haz DFA Chris Davis?

He’s going to start a tornado in RBiA with those wind tunnels he keeps whiffing up.

I saw last night that he has K’d 99 times in 218 PAs. That is an epic number of missed scoring opportunities and wasted outs. Does his defense make up for that? Methinks not.

-FirebatM3 to Ryan2907. 6/3/09.

by SarasotaRanger on Jun 21, 2009 7:07 AM CDT reply actions

Actually, he hit the big 100 last night

100 K’s in 219 PA’s. Somehow that only grades out to a 45.7 K/9, but it’s still mindblowing.

He’s plus 2.2 runs at first base right now, but he’s minus 9.8 at the dish. That’s “only” a half win below replacement overall (seems like it should be more), but I’m at the point where can’t rationally defend his presence in the lineup anymore. With the team in this squad-wide slump, it seems like step #1 to getting this offense back on track should be sending him back to OKC.

Get on base or die, Salty.

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

all i can say is wow...

you guys are the biggest group of knee-jerkers ever assembled in one place. amzing to watch the mood change so drastically in such a short period of time.

anyway…

milton bradley – people thought bradley was expendable b/c we could get a compensation pick, but unless tanner scheppers can swing the bat we need to accept that offensive loss and realize that not having bradley is a short term consequence of continuing to rebuild.

we weren’t intended to contend this year anyway. 2010, remember?

davis – sucks. JD knew (definitely should have known) that teixeira would never be a long term solution, so i am perplexed why there wasn’t a better transition plan involved for his departure. as others have noted over the last several days, you need a big stick at first to be competitive, and davis certainly isn’t that. i don’t care so much that he sucks because people don’t always reach their potential. i do care that this third baseman is our best option at first. how does that happen?

hamilton is hurt. hard to get too worked up about that. that’s been the one knock on him from day one – that the abuse his body sustained would preclude him from being a full season guy each year.
