Minors 6/21

Lots and lots of games today. The Arizona Rookie League stats today, I really have no idea who is on that roster so it will be fun for me to read those box scores to find out who's on that squad.

A quick run-down of the games today:

ARZ 9PM: Alvarez? - Im guessing this is Richard Alvarez, I dont know alot about him, but i bet Shroom or someone else could tell you.

SPK 8PM: Matt Thompson - I like what i've heard about him over Fall instructs and spring training. It sounds like he has a nice CB/FB combo to start with, of course command will likely be the key for him.

Hickory 2PM Box: Perez/Brigham - the famous duo has been somewhat less dominant recently, although Perez's last outing could have been amazing if it hadnt been cut short. Even though Perez's ERA has crept up to 3, he's still showing incredible perpherial #'s

Bak 2:30 Box: Gomez - eh, this is the one team that i dont have much interest in following right now, besides the pitchers that is.

Frisco DH starting at 4 (first game): Nippert, Ballard - not really an exciting tandem, of course, Smithy and Moreland are igniting this Frisco offense again, and dont look now, but Lemon's avg has crept back up to .300 almost

OKC 4: Feliz - the star hopefully will shine today... Im also hoping for a 4 HR game today for Max and a reason for him to take CDs spot on the 25.

Also, Im a big US soccer fan, so feel free to chat about the Egypt-US game... I need to see something positive today from them.

Nice

59 pitches through 5 IP with 43 being strikes is very nice. Why not let him come out for the 6th though if his pitch count was 75 though? I probably would have taken him out, just curious though.

OT: Nice ML matchup, Verlander v. Gallardo.

Lotsa K’s in that one.

Lemon went 3 for 3 in the first game of Frisco's DH and is now hitting a solid

.305… still missing the power, but at least he got a 2B today.

Moreland went 2 for 4 with a double as well, B. Jones k’ed 5 w/o walking anyone in 2.1 innings.

Jones

Wouldn’t that be something if he developed into a solid LH relief option and we look back in a couple years and have 5 guys on the major league roster from the Tex trade. 3 of them being in A ball or lower when we traded for them.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

No joke

It’s not an exaggeration to suggest that the Teixeira trade could go down as one of the biggest deadline heists in major league history. Great outing by Jones. One would assume he’s behind Pirate in the LHP call-up pecking order right now, but I hope he keeps it up and then gets a serious look as a lefty bullpen option in ST next year.

Glad to see Lemon quietly putting a nice line together. He was really hot and then really cold, I reckon he’s now at a level we can expect him to maintain.

2 for 4 with a double for Moreland? Ho hum. That’s an off day for him.

the interesting thing about Paisano

is that he’s still so young. He is a year and a half younger than Bianucci, and although he is not nearly as complete offensively, when you add in his defense, you could make a case that they should both spend the second half of this year in BAK.

What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.

Jones

He is one of those guys this winter we will have to add to the 40 or risk losing. Assuming we do add him he will have 3 options which will be nice. Right now we don’t have a LOOGY type guy with options.

they can use as throw ins, relievers and lefties galore that might interest another team.

by t ball on Jun 21, 2009 7:19 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Barring a trade, I would assume Jones is a near-lock to get added to the 40

Come Rule 5 time, teams don’t pass on 22 year-old left-handed relievers who are pitching moderately well in Double A and have a career 8.8 K/9.

For that same reason, as you point out, he could be a valuable trade piece this summer or over the winter. It’s going to be interesting to watch how the team handles the next few years. There’s a good chance we’ll have more ML-ready (or near-ready) prospects than we have available spots on the 40. If the team plays it right, they can turn this collection of arms into a Rangers pitching staff the likes of which we’ve never seen plus a few high impact, star hitters.

is it strange

that i now check the position player part of the box score before I check the pitching line? And I actually found myself wondering if Emerson Frostad should/could fill in for Chris Davis for a few weeks, if for no other reason than to wake the rest of the team up a bit. That’s crazy talk, but the point is that I’m at that point.

Sexy list

Alvarez, Escobar, Melo, Telis, Gullon, Ahn, in addition to the OF you mentioned. Looking down the rosters right now, I’m going to be doing a lot of coin flipping when we do or annual prospect rankings. Looking at that pitching staff makes me feel damn old. 1992?

Exactly.

This staff is looking pretty talented.

Alvarez really gets my pants excited, and Melo, Ahn, Grullon, Rijo, etc. are all fine pitching prospects with genuine ceiling.

Telis is the position prospect to watch, but Sierra should be fun as well.

It’s also interesting to note Braxton Lane’s name here. Didn’t even know he’d signed. Figured he’d be tough with his footballl commitment to Oregon (Linky- Hat tip to Hull Fan’s excellent fanpost for the link). A mention of 4.3 40 speed makes me think he’s probably a CF prospect, and you can never have too many of those.

Hard to believe that LW is still only 21

It’s really encouraging to see the way he’s developed this season. He’s still got the time to turn into a valuable ML piece as a 4th/5th OF, pinch runner, and superstud defensive replacement.

He’s probably got more value to us as a trade piece in a couple of years, swapping him to a NL team looking for just that type of guy.

Paisano might only be 21

but he is old as a signee. He has to be added to the 40 this winter to protect him in the rule 5 draft. I don’t see that happening. Unless something clicks and he shoots up the system, he will most likely end up a minor league FA.

Oh, and the US Soccer team has mellowed me out considerably from where I'd usually be after a Rangers loss like today.

I can’t believe they’re advancing.

I fell asleep this afternoon up 2-0, woke up to news we’d made it 3-0 and Brazil had held off the greasy floppers 3-0 as well and we’re on to the elimination rounds, bitches !!!!

Advancing by itself is not a huge, huge deal, but team USA needed something positive coming out of this if we are gonna have any hope of a good showing in South Africa next year.

I don’t have any delusions about us being a threat to win it all, but I’d love to make it out of group this time around.

Love, love, love to do that.

Onyewu looked good while I was watching. He had a goal today, but I have to agree with Harkes that Dempsey has been playing like crap for a while now. I think he needs to be a sub for this team in the WC. They have a lot of holes to fill still, and I don’t know where the answers are coming from by next summer. Jozy needs a couple more years.

It’s crazy that they came out of that in second, though. The Spaniards are going to destroy them.

by Brett Perryman on Jun 21, 2009 8:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea, outside of that goal, Dempsey was horrendous

i was just praying that would sub him and then he went out and scored that goal… He does have moments of brilliance, but that doesnt take away the numerous really poor turnovers he had. We have players who play better D than him and take care of the ball a whole lot better than him.

We have to find away to continue to play with two strikers, we just seem to play a ton better like that. If they keep Dempsey out there, I say keep him at Forward, but id rather have someone else up there…

Donovan should the kind of class today that makes him our best player, he creates more space in the open field than anyone else and he has class touches on the ball. If he was just a tad bit selfish, or if we just had a player with his talent level who played more selfishly, we’d be much better off.

I really like Spector and definitely think he is just a better player than anyone else we have on the wing, his level of skill is just a ton higher than our other options in my opinion. He’s big and strong as well… I like having big, strong Defenseive backs, Oneywu is just a beat in the middle, Demerit is also a very strong player and i have no problem with him out there. Bornstien, to me, has been our only weak link on the back line. The other obvious weakness is the defensive play of our outside mids, which of course might just be the way they are set up tactically, to be more offensive…

Anywas, that was an awesome win, very exciting and likely the most positive thing that has happened to US soccer this year. We have enough talent to compete on this level, I think its just gonna come down to finding that right mix… I hope they take Dempsey out for this next game and use some of our younger mids… If we somehow manage to add another playmaker with Donovan in our midfield, we could be a real threat.

Agreed on the two strikers, and

to add to that, just my opinion, but I don’ think that Brian Ching has the kind of class to be a regular starter and get the job done against world cup caliber countries.

Also, I know he’s not a prime time international player or anything, but I love Michael Bradley. I like having someone with a little size in the midfield, someone who can find the net, and who can tackle a little. He’s my favorite player on the US squad, even though Donovan is the lead talent.

Nice outing for Thompson

despite the fact that he didn’t come close to sniffing 90 – we’ll chalk it up to nerves, frostbite: 5ip/4h/0er/1bb/3so

Well the pre-draft scouting reports

said he threw low 90’s in fact BA tabbed him as having one of the best FB of the draft class. At fall instructs however, his velo was in the high 80s with later reports indicating he his velo had returned. Given the wheels off inaccuracies of the fall instructs reports/rumors/unfounded speculations who knows…

GG out of the pen for Thompson

Let’s see if he can pitch more than 25 innings in his 3rd year if if JG is truly the better prospect among the Grullon brothers.

It's only Thompson's second year, right?

I’m guessing you know that but I wasn’t sure by your comment. Not sure if you were talking about hoping he’d do it this year or next.

Drafted 7th round last year and didn’t sign till late, iirc.

We reportedly gave him “second round dollars” so we must like something about the dude.

Geuris > Juan

If anything, the name is a tiebreaker. But we shall see.

by naropean on Jun 22, 2009 8:10 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Geuris is a solid name

If anything, we have the #1 collection of farm system names in addition to having the #1 collection of talent. If we can add an outfielder with the exact same name as one already in our system (Guillermo) and a guy with the amazing moniker of Jurickson Profar, one would think we’re in line to maintain our #1 ranking in awesome names for the foreseeable future.

Wheels off on the MiLB AZL box scores

No pitcher mentioned in the play by play but he has a pretty good line:

4ip/3h/1er/0bb/4so
3 singles: 2 groundballers, 1 line drive
3/5 go/ao ratio

Telis’ rough night doesn’t count as an 18yo: 0-2, pb, gidp, throwing error, 0-2 throwing out runners in 4 innings

Smoak + Feliz + Healthy Hamilton

= fixed offense and missing bullpen piece for this team without having to mortgage the future? If those pieces could fill our major league needs successfully we could have the best of both worlds, win now and in the future… I just hope that they are ready sooner rather than later.

A healthy Max Ram could move into the part time catcher/platoon DH with Blalock role and look really good there, too.

I still think Max is gonna rake as long as he’s healthy.

It makes me sad that I don’t think we’ll end up giving him a chance to stick long term behind the plate, cause I think he could be mediocre enough there to be a huge plus once you fcotr in that sweet bat of his.

If it where up to me, and he was healthy I'd for call him up now or whenever Davis goes down

And platoon him with Hank at first versus lefties and DH him versus righties and if Salty and Teagarden don’t improve, phase him in as catcher.

Of course, this the real world with Ron Washington managing things, which means Max getting called up would only result in him riding the pine while Andruw Jones and the Salty/Tea combo continue to suck at life.

I hate that Ron Washington is our manager so much sometimes. Hate hate hate.

Why exactly did they send him to AZ?

Rehab assignment?

I guess this is commonplace for major leaguers, but it seems like a weird contrast sending a AA player down so many levels… Does it make that much difference to face inferior pitching?

I found a NWL video of Matt Thompson throwing one pitch – it looked like a nasty, nasty overhand curveball for a K. I also found a GG pitch – he really slings it and falls off to 3rd base – gangly dude. I found a funny pic of the Spokane bullpen that I’ll put up in the next minor league thread.

Why do you hype your lame ass blog

every time you post? We get it….you have a blog. People will show up if its good. I only hype Crops every other time I post. Perhaps you should follow my lead. I’m swimming in hits thanks to extenZe. It gives me the confidence I need when I’m in bedroom situations. Your blog sounds like it could use some confidence. Give it a shot.

Finnerty could learn a thing or two from guys like Goyo, but he doesn’t seem to want too. Which is, in all seriousness rather sad, really. Fin did have the passion to start a blog on the minors, give him that much. Kind of too bad that passion will now be wasted in attempts to troll LSB from now on.

Trolling to troll is one thing

Calling people like you out for being inferior isnt trolling. You’ve been attacking me from the very beginning, going as far as posting rude comments on the Crops site. If you want to make false assumptions and throw out attacks, you shouldnt act surprised when some come back your way. It’s really not that hard to understand, jon. I would suggest debating me on the Rangers as a way to solve this tiff, but I doubt you would want that challenge.

If you think you know more than me, accept the challenge. I promise you a fair fight. You pick the questions.

I’m not sure Jon would place that same bet, though. I dont think he wants to get embarrassed by someone like me. He talks a good game, but I think he is secretly afraid of his own knowledge. If he accepts my challenge, I will let him set the parameters.

He was a late name on the scene, which fits an August birthday, since he couldn’t have signed until then.

Do you see Alvarez as a guy who will stay in Arizona all year, or could we conceivably see him pushed to Spokane before the season ends?

If he did that, at a mere 16, wow. He’d make Martin Perez look like a late bloomer.
