this i agree with

is this a team of quitters? is it approach? is it lack of talent?

wtf?

again the rangers are making spare pitchers look great.

this sucks.

by sam in so cal on Jun 21, 2009 5:41 PM CDT up reply actions

lack of talent

No one is scary on this team. There are a few good offensive players(Kinsler, Cruz, Young, Hamilton), a few average ones(Byrd, Murphy, AJones, Andrus), and some bad ones(Blalock, Davis, Salty, TT). The worst part is 2 of the bad ones are from positions that it very easy to get at least average offensive production from – 1B & DH.

Sooooo, fix it Nolan & JD.

I was a Ranger fan when being a Rangers fan wasn't cool.

by JTodd on Jun 21, 2009 9:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Blalock is 4th among qualifying DHs in the AL in OPS...

He belongs squarely in the average grouping

and they can fix it easily…but the problem is the cost…

No, he's not...

but you’re making it sound like the guy is throwing nothing but meat at the plate. I pointed out that he’s had 4 good outings out of 5, and before the first part of this year in Colorado, he’d been a pretty good reliever in Detroit.

I’ll agree, he was god awful in Colorado to start this year, but outside of those 19.1 innings, he’s been pretty decent in his career.

Grilli has a 4.25 FIP and a 9.62 K/9

There’s plenty of reason to think his .421 BABIP will come down, and along with it his .331 BAA. His only really worrisome trait is his 5.18 BB/9, but if his BAA comes down that can be managed, considering how many guys he K’s.

Eddie doesn’t strike anyone out, doesn’t miss bats (K/9 below 4), and has a 6.22 FIP and a tRA of 24. I don’t see how you can even compare him to Grilli.

Get on base or die, Salty.

Shitty stuff or no, a .421 BABIP is rediculously unlucky.

With as many bats as he misses, I think there’s plenty of reason to think he can be significantly better than this if the BABIP comes down, which it will.

We are averaging 3.4 runs/game in June

We are near the bottom of almost every offensive category for the month. Its not the pitching we have faced. Its our guys playing like shit. Yes Burnett and Lester are good pitchers but they aren’t THAT good that we should suck as bad as we have against them.

not lester that night

and not burnett from what i can remember.

but yeah, I think that is fair. a non slumping above average offense should at least overperform a couple of times during the course of a month.

they haven’t overperformed at all it seems. maybe wandy, although i thought wandy was terrible.

so the punchline to all of this is that the rangers aren’t really slumping – they’re just not that good to begin with. given that, i think this month is only going slightly worse than what should have happened.

I know its easy to think that if we played a bunch of bad games in a row, it’s not them, it’s us. but we also just played a bunch of really good pitchers in a row. and when we weren’t facing good pitchers, we weren’t terrible.

and you’re just being a jackass. i said i wanted to see the zito game to make a determination. i think it was perfectly reasonably to be open to the possibility that we were only underpeforming against god pitchers and not in this tail spin systemic slump

If you needed the Zito game to make your determination then you haven't been watching the games

Our offense has been awful of late. Good pitching, bad pitching, it doesn’t matter. We have hit guys like Pettite and Wandy Rodriguez and then let guys like Tallet and Janssen make us look like an A ball team. We can’t manufacture runs to save our lives. We have two hitters at the bottom of the lineup that are almost automatic outs. Our leadoff man hits popups like Willie Mays Hayes in Major League.

Theres a reason those pitchers have looked “pretty good” and its because we make them look like that

Jim Lollar at Inwood and Cooper

Been to him a couple of times. If you don’t qualify for deferred adjudication or defensive driving, I would suggest him.

I think you pay like $40 up front… he goes to court, month goes by, get a letter in the mail… you’re fee will probably be about the price of the ticket (and then ~$20-$30 extra, for court fees and other BS I’m sure)

So if you got a ticket where you were ~10 mph over, you can expect to pay about $180-$190

I know it sucks, but it keeps it off your record. :)

Some good news/bad news on Neftali

Good News: 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 7K

Bad News: Needed 85 pitches to get through 5 Innings before Pirate replaced him

Still; 7 K, 5 GO, and only 2 flyball outs in 5 IP. Of the 7 hits, 4 singles and 3 doubles. Kevin Richardson helped him out by throwing out a runner at 3rd to help keep the game 1-1 and get Neftali through 5

Like I said lets wait for him to string together a few good ones in a row before we say hes figuring things out

Today was the first time in the last 5 games hes fanned more than 3 guys. The pitches per inning is worrisome right now. 1 run allowed is nice and a far departure from his most recent starts.

My hope is they keep him down for another 6 weeks or so before even thinking about bringing him up. He needs to work on alot of stuff it sounds like. another 10 starts or so should allow him to do so. Then re-evaluate and decide if you want to bring him up to fortify the pen or keep him down and continue being a starter.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 21, 2009 5:59 PM CDT up reply actions

Yep

right now he would only be a bullpen guy at the ML level. So if you want him to get his innings, learn to battle, develop his offspeed stuff…then he has to stay down until late in the season. If you want to see if he can help your pen and maybe hurt his secondary stuff in the short term…then he could be up earlier.

by ab03 on Jun 21, 2009 6:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Me either

But not until August at the earliest

Right now the positives he could bring do not outweigh the negatives of neglecting his offspeed stuff and the development he could get in the minors.

Now if we are still in a tight race in August and a late inning shut down reliever can really make a difference then yes bring him up and hopefully the couple months in the majors won’t stunt his growth.

Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by bigsteve on Jun 21, 2009 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Until he can average more than 4.2 IP per start

He won’t make himself anything but a bullpen option. That’s why I agree with what you’re saying that they should wait as long as they can on him to give him every opportunity to develop his control and offspeed pitches.

Just look at how Holland has looked as he struggles with his offspeed stuff and hitters sit on his fastball or yak a hanger. And Holland is ahead of Neftali in terms of control and secondary stuff. When he starts ripping off 6, 7, and 8 inning outings with this type of K/BB and a more efficient use of pitches, then you are looking at an ace prospect.

The bad thing is, it's too early.

More teams think they are in it, and the teams that will trade are gonna hold the Rangers up for a kings ransom. Tough spot to be in for a G.M.

As much as some are loathe to hear this, it may be best to stand pat for now, let the races further develop/shake out the losers, and wait for Smoak to get healthy, while determining if he is a viable option as a reinforcement.

Yep

My guess is that, with Hamilton expected back in about 3 weeks, the team will ride it out until then.

If Davis is still struggling, he gets sent down when Hamilton returns, Blalock plays 1B every day, and the OF/DH slots are allocating among Hamilton, Jones, Murphy, Byrd, and Cruz.

And at that point, they’ll look at whether they need to bring in someone else to man 1B, or if they’ll just ride it out with Blalock.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 21, 2009 7:02 PM CDT up reply actions

This seems likely

and probably for the best, all things considered. Trading for someone would make fans feel better momentarily, but it probably wouldn’t fix anything or really improve their chances of winning. Then later we’d all be bitching about what they had to give up to get that bat.

I'm sure we've all seen this, but...

Per Newberg:

A .355/.403/.403 June has lifted Borbon’s season slash line to .302/.358/.370, but maybe most impressive has been the center fielder’s refusal to go down on strikes. He may not walk enough for a prototype leadoff hitter (18 times unintentionally in 265 at-bats), but he’s only fanned 26 times. A 13-game stretch in May without striking out has been followed by a seven-game run in June. A strong candidate to be the Rangers’ center fielder in 2010, Borbon has succeeded in 18 of 22 stolen base attempts.

That's why they call them business sox

Byrd doesn't have much time in CF

That being said, Borbon would be a defensive upgrade.

However, he isn’t likely to hit better than Byrd going forward, so bringing him up doesn’t do much to fix the offense.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 21, 2009 6:47 PM CDT up reply actions

No, it admittedly doesn't

That said, Byrd has sucked ass at getting on base this year and at my last tally was seeing the fourth fewest pitches in the entire AL.

So I don’t really think the offense matters much where Byrd vs. Borbon is concerned, myself. CF is about the only other position than SS where I value defense over offense, so if Borbon can play plussy defense in CF while hitting at about the same/a little worse than Byrd is, I’d be willing to take it.

unless Borbon shows he can handle ML pitching well enough to

let Hamilton DH when he comes back. I the meantime, Murphy an Byrd share LF which suits them best. I also think CD needs to be sent down and Blalock can play 1B fulltime. Lets get on with CD’s “rehab” so he can contribute later while it still matters.
