The 2009 Texas Rangers offense: sigh...

that Frisco lineup suddenly looks a whole lot better
if Tracy and Whittleman would actually be decent, they’d be a really good offense
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Whittleman..... decent...
in the same sentence?

Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
ok now that just pissed me off
how dare you disrepect Johnny Whittleman like that

Why?
Do you seriously think he’d be playing for the Rangers? Boggs can’t get an at bat but suddenly JMJ would?
Yeah and like we really need
JMJ’s looooong swing.

would another year at AAA build his value back up anymore?
I just dont see how we sold that low, I think we got what we could at the time and moved on hoping to build more value with Golson than what we had with JMJ
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Meh...
there was no selling high on JMJ.

Im so glad you have determined Golson is nothing already
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Price had NOTHING tonight
If people are going to slit their wrists every time JMJ does anything, I’d advise going down the river and not across the bridge.
Yeah, Price was horrible, my fantasy team will pay
I always liked JMJ more than most, for no good reason, just did.
Maybe he could have moved back to 1B?

sadly, if he was here
i think we’d all be clamoring for him to do just that

Definitely
should be a lesson to anyone that is getting impatient with Holland. David Price was/is definitely a better rated prospect than Holland yet Price is quite inconsistent so far.

yep, it happens
and its gonna happen likely with all of our young pitchers as they come up… except for Martin Perez, of course.
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Word
How many consecutive Cy Youngs will Martin win at the start of his career? Five? Ten?
On another note, does young Martin have a nickname yet? There was a Mexican general in the Texas Revolution named Martin Perfecto de Cos. We could call him Martin Perfecto de Perez to honor his infallibility. On the other hand, Cos kind of sucked as a general, so maybe that’s not so good after all.

i think i heard that his nickname around the club was that b/c he reminded a scout of the way ron guidry aka Louisiana Lightning pitched, and hence, was the Venezuelan Lightning

Now that I looked up the numbers
He was pretty terrible in his first season (only 33 IPs)
But was only kinda bad in the first half of 2005 (3-7 4.59 ERA)

Anyone think Perez gets the Feliz treatment to start next year
Skip High A all together and go straight to AA. If he continues to put up phenominal performances I think you have to consider it

How many does he need?
He got 60+ last year in Spokane. By comparison Feliz got approx. 70 combined over 2 years between rookie and short season ball. Feliz then pitched in 80+ innings in Clinton before making the jump. I expect Martin to get 90+ innings this year in Hickory which would put him right in line with what they did with Feliz. He has a better breaking ball than Neftali does from all accounts so why not?

No Max tonight. :(
Why has Huffman been DHing and Frostad at 1B?
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Possible replacement for Davis?
Has Huffman been DFAd before? My thinking is if they are gonna send CD down and bring up someone from AAA who will need to be added to the 40 it would be best to bring up Frostad if Huffman has previously been DFAd. That way when you are ready to send Frostad back down you can simply DFA him and keep him in your organization rather than lose him like you would with Huffman (again this only applies if he has previously been DFAd)
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
I can't imagine...
…that Huffman is going to be in a big rush to exercise his right to elect for free agency were he added to the 40 man roster, then outrighted sometime later.
by Adam J. Morris on Jun 23, 2009 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Why take the chance though
Is Huffman that big an upgrade over Frostad in the amount of time they would get in the bigs? And Frostad isn’t a guy I would exactly worry about DFAing so it works
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Why do you care about Huffman?
He’s like 32.

The idea that huffman or thorman or frostad
will be called up to this team anytime _ever_makes zero sense. MaxRam would get the call or there would be a trade…
could be that
and maybe Frostad is simply a better 1B

Miguel De Los Santos struck out the side in the ninth for the DSL Rangers
now has 33 K’s in 12.1 innings pitched….that’s just sick.
If you want some slack, bring your own rope.
I know its DSL but . . .
He leads the league in K’s and he’s their closer!
He doesn’t even have enough innings to qualify at ERA.
Hold up
12.1 innings means 37 outs. You are telling me he has gotten 33 of those on strikeouts. Holy hell. I know some border patrol agents im sure we could smuggle him over somehow

Yah, the 3 k's are a little sobering, but overall pretty encouraging.
Can’t wait to see him coming in out of the ’pen in Arlington in September.
He’s in line for a cup, right?
What’s his 40 status?
This winter or next for him being added?

why Gentry leads off every game and Lemon hits at the back of the lineup.

marcus lemon why not mix it up and have him lead off?

Why shouldn't Gentry leadoff?
Close to a .360 OBP and 27 of 28 in steals so obviously he’s got some wheels.
Seems like a pretty good leadoff candidate to me.
I think Lemon’d look pretty good in the 2-hole myself, but do you really expect some lowly double-A manger to go against the wishes of the Newberg?
I’m guessing the man has a family to feed.

Ok, when has Gentry
had an OBP of .360? His career mark is .338. He’s having a very nice hot streak, and I’m ok with him being there, I guess, but Lemon should be hitting 1st or 2nd.

Because Lemon is a prospect and Gentry isn't?

Why isn't Gentry a prospect?
Because he’s 25?
by NoNameOnCard on Jun 24, 2009 1:53 AM CDT up reply actions
fringy at best
But they could leave Gentry in leadoff, hit Lemon #2 and move Moreland to 4th or 5th or something. Of course milb.com seems to be having problems right now when I want to check the order, but I think Moreland was hitting 2nd last night.
G G G E-flat_______ F F F D__________....
Maybe because
he’s never put up a 700 OPS despite being old for every league? He is a good defender and doing fine for the first time offensively at 25 in the TL, but as t ball said, he’s fringy at best.
Arlington, TX: home of The Blue Blur
by Brett Perryman on Jun 24, 2009 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions
You're preaching to the Lemon-flavored choir about Marcus.
I think he 100% needs to be hitting 1 or 2.
But I don’t see Gentry leading off as a problem. He’s 25 which obviously makes him the suck as a long term prospect, but he’s got plussy plus speed and apparently CF defense, so maybe they think he’s a 4th/5th OF prospect and want to give him as many AB’s as possible to try to prove that this year.

It's the combination that strikes me as odd
Fine, bat Gentry first, but don’t hit Lemon 9th to do so. Bat Lemon 9th if you’re loaded, but don’t hit a handful of non or fringe guys high in the order.
Arlington, TX: home of The Blue Blur
by Brett Perryman on Jun 24, 2009 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
maybe because Lemon
has a .972 ops batting 9th vs .622 batting second. The only two places in the order where he has had significant ABs.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Who cares?
If he is bad in the #2 spot, he needs to work at it. It’s an ideal spot in the order for him.

before Smoak came back, Osuna and Lemon were the 8-9 guys with Moreland #2 hitting in front of Smitty and Tracy at cleanup. Bizarre.

i keep hoping he’ll break out and go crazy. He’s doing ok. but damn. I was thinking he’d be hitting more for power this year.
