getting started early... If anyone wants to discuss the USA/Espana game early this afternoon, im game
should be fun, Im not expecting anything more than a 2 goal loss, maybe a one goal loss and id be pretty happy.

Would a 1 goal loss
be considered a success for the US?
by Michael Cave on Jun 24, 2009 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions
I think so, of course, it depends on how they look too
If they are really putting some good scoring chances up, then i definitely think its a success. Im not sure if we’ve figured out the exact lineups we want to use in the WC, so im ok if we lose now to the top team in the world

While Feliz has all kinds of Talent, and his arm strength is unmatched
I think Perez has the right types of talents that translate into a more dominant SP in the majors… You cant teach the type of curveball he throws i think, and him being lefthanded and so fricking young doesnt hurt

either way
the better prospect in my eyes is who you would rather have right now…and I think you would be hard pressed to find a scout who would trade Feliz for Perez straight up.
Yep
How high do you think he shoots up the prospect lists after this season?
Id say top 30. His numbers are very similar to Feliz’s last year at Low A 2 years younger than Feliz was.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
yea, I think top 30 isnt a reach at all... I guess it just depends on how much the BA guys like him
and i think they love him. His numbers this year belay his talent that was so hyped last year… I think that should warrant top 30 consideration

I was just sorting through some of the fangraphs leaderboards looking at the minor league statistics of players
definitely a cool addition… Anyways, Martin Perez is 5th in the Sally LG in FIP with a 2.54 FIP and is 6th in K/9 at 10.61, all of this while being one of the youngest players (is he the youngest pitcher?) in the entire league.

What about this line from KK?
7.0 7 1 0 1 3
The only run scored on a PB by Gradoville. Did they give him the Feliz talk, “Quit trying to strike out the world”? Or, did he just have an exceptional night? It seems to me that he overthrows trying to K everyone, which results in the HBP & WP/PBs. Nice to see him throttle it back and still have nice results.

yea, this was a great start for Kiker
these are the kind of starts we need from Kiker and Feliz, I think for the most part, we know they can strike out their fair share of batters, they just need to chill out and work on their control

Blake Beavan
Nothing like a little healthy competition to bring out the best in a player.
Elvis Andrus - 2009 AL Rookie of the Year
Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
Speaking of Beavan
The way he has been pitching this year and last he has to be in play for an end of 2010 promotion to the bigs. I think he continues to impress at AA, starts there next year but is quickly promoted to AAA.
by Michael Cave on Jun 24, 2009 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions
I think that once
a player prospect reaches AA they are on the radar for the MLs within a year. The fall and ST will determine how fast BB advances. If he impresses, he could put himself on the SP depth chart and see the MLs next year.

Mitch Moreland - 2009 Rangers Minor League POY
not ahead of Poveda
Moscoso Feliz and maybe even Hunter or Kirkman or Kiker, and now scheppers. Keep your dicks in your pants people…
Not unless we absolutely need him
He isn’t rule 5 eligible until after 2011 and we look to have some serious roster crunches coming. I think he would have to be lights out to warrant a promotion before the start of 2011
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.

by Michael Cave on Jun 24, 2009 9:38 AM CDT up reply actions
He may merit one
But I doubt he gets one.
Looking right now if these guys keep their development up I count 8 guys who will need to be added to the 40 after 2010 if not before then. I just don’t think we will have room for Beavan unless he is needed due to injury.
Bryan Smith (12:17:17 PM PT): Justin Smoak and Josh Hamilton. The AL West might just have found their Bash Brothers, v. 2.0.
Porcello????
Beavan needs to be in the rotation next year, if he continues to pitch like he is now…

IIRC
Early in the game Scooter discussed what the PC was preaching to Kiker about leading up to this start. Get his pitch count under control and emphasize the ‘depth’ of his CU rather than looking for ‘run’ – which I took to mean get it dropping down steeply in the zone rather than settling for it slipping to the side. NNoC?
good stuff...
scooter is ptiching coach?
Fewer strikeouts, fewer walks, better starts
This is the trend I see helping Font and Kiker. It’s showed up in each of their last starts (I know, SSS).
Maybe it’s simplifying, but if you aren’t throwing hard enough to go for the K wouldn’t your control improve?

i'm okay with this
nothing says that he can’t move back to a starting role later on. I don’t buy into the idea that this will stunt his progress in any serious way. And the big league club needs a shot in the arm.
What is this, Horseville? Because I'm surrounded by naysayers.
I believe you saw the problems
that holland had with his secondary pitches while stuck in the pen and spot starting. He needed to be working on his slider and his Jr clg-era curveball (who knew?).
What I don’t get is why you don’t simply leave Feliz in the rotation for another month to keep working on his command and his secondary pitches and controlling the running game and then call him up Mid-July to see what he’s got. why waste even a month of his development time when he is only just now coming around since a rough first 6weeks? The other thing that I don’t get is that there is no way he will be a closer or setup go, likely a MR to long man like Holland was this year and like Mags was last year. If they didnt trust Mags or Holland to pitch in a critical setup role (still not trusting Mags in fact) when they were called up, the likelihood that Feliz will be tried in that sceneario is even more remote. If true, then this seems like a big fat waste.
Now there's the "shot in the arm" player this team needs.

I saw the last 30 minutes after scrambling for an online feed
The defense was rock solid, particularly Onyewu and DeMerit. And the offense was moving the ball with purpose and confidence. Spain had tons more chances, but the US just took advantage and played their asses off. I’ve never seen them play better than they did today. I can’t get over it. The only bad thing is Michael Bradley got a red (which I thought was undeserved—should have been a yellow) and won’t be available for the final. But still, wow. An amazing turnaround from just a few days ago.
Well im pissed,,,
I will just catch the replay tonight or tomorrow…
The real question is how far has U.S. come compared to the rest of NA in futbol? How much longer until the U.S national team will consistently get the top 10 world ranking? I know before today’s game the us has been sitting between 10-20 for the last year or so.
The funny thing is that U.S has a huge amount of talent to pull from, every conceivable advantage in training and nutrition and yet we seem to be stuck just outside of true contender status….
20 more years until the U.s reaches that plateau is my guess. But that is a titanic leap from where the sport was 20 years ago…
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
It's all about the development
The programs in Europe and S.A. are geared toward making these guys eat, breathe, and sleep soccer at a very early age. If the US is serious about becoming a top flight soccer nation then something will have to change on the developmental level.
Of course, when a kid can’t go to the NBA after high school and the NFL until 3 years of college…I’m sure the reception wouldn’t be great.
There are some of these “sports academies” popping up, but they are a long way from what a kid in Europe would get.
I used to shoot baskets
it also hurts that we are likely losing alot of our best athletes to other sports... most of the time Europe and
SA have very little problem with this. That will likely help hinder us, but even then, we are getting closer. Right now, we could probably field a team entirely of players who play in Europe, which is an amazing improvement. We have enough players to put talented enough team out there… I really like the defensive players we have and i believe the style we play fits that. We dont have a ton world class midfielders or attackers, but we have some really good defenders and we play a style that suits that
"The House That Ruth Built, 85 years old, goes out as The House That Hamilton Knocked Down"
Yah, not nearly enough gets made of this.
In Brazil and Argentina and most of Europe the elite athletes go into soccer almost exclusively.
In America we have a myriad of other sports to syphon off talent.
Can you imagine if all our best athletes played soccer?

Although to be fair I didn’t mention the Dominican, where baseball is a real contender for young athletes.
And I did qualify it somewhat “almost”.
Sure there are guys who pick baseball, basketball, volleyball, track and field or whatever.
But I think the number of athletes being drawn to soccer as their passion in Europe and South America especially is far, far greater than in the US, and I don’t know how you can argue that. Soccer isn’t a huge deal here and very few kids grow up living and dying with soccer from a very young age like they do there. Growing up dreaming of being a soccer star just isn’t the norm here like it elsewhere.

Allen Iverson brings up another topic: boxing
Bill Simmons once made a good point in writing on the death of boxing in America that kids like Iverson, had they been born a decade or two earlier, would have boxed their way out of the inner city. Instead, nowadays, those kids pursue sports like basketball that provide less of a chance of ending up a brain-damaged vegetable.
"wORLD sEIRES HERE WE COMER!!!!!!!!!"by bigsteve on May 29, 2009 10:21 PM PDT
"Elvis Andrus has just performed a miracle." -Eric Nadel
Hmmm.... Maybe that's a part of it.
In fact, certainly it’s a part of it. I really don’t know that boxing’s downfall can be linked to a paucity of great fighters. We’ve had some real greats recently. (Mayweather. Roy Jones was crazy good for awhile. etc.)
I think a much larger part of it was the way the boxing organizations clusterfucked themselves right out of the American consciousness.
UFC is proving that there’s a very big market for competitive violence out there, and I don’t know that they would’ve been able to get their foot in the door had boxing not degenerated in a retard orgy over the past 20-30 years (and maybe longer than that).
I think most kids don’t try to box their way out of the inner city anymore cause pro boxing is fucking stupid and young people don’t watch it at all.
Also I think the decision to make all their premium content (meaning: all the meaningful matches) pay-per-view was a horribly dumb long term decision.
How are kids gonna want to grow up to be like Roy Jones when they can’t see him fight?
Basically any way a sport as a whole could come together and fuck up their long term prospects in such a way that guaranteed they’d never recover and become utterly irrelevant, boxing did that shit, any did it hard.
The sport deserves to die.

I might be full of shit here...
But the explanation I’ve gotten from some friends is that the physical aspect of the game is overly stressed and the creative/technical side is not nurtured or developed as much. I don’t have any firsthand experience with the US system, so I don’t know how true that is, but it makes sense to me looking at the players being produced.
Also, is there a US player that is legitimately two footed?
Wouldn't Bradley have been out if it was a yellow anyway?
since he got one in the last match?

I think we knew all of these, but
BA’s list of our signings through the 20th:
Signed: RHP Jared Schrom (NDFA—Stephen F. Austin State), SS Denny Duron (NDFA—Pepperdine)
Draft picks signed: RHP Sam Brown (22), RHP Kevin Castner (26), RHP Johnny Gunter (11), RHP Justin Jamison (13), RHP Chris Matlock (21), RHP Jared Prince (34), RHP Braden Tullis (8), LHP Shane Zagarac (42), C Vin DiFazio (12), 3B Taylor Vail (40), SS Shon Landry (31), SS Danny Lima (23), OF Joe Bonadonna (43), OF Braxton Lane (7), OF Kyle Rhoad (33), OF Ruben Sierra Jr. (6)
Arlington, TX: home of The Blue Blur
Any idea what sort of contract Lane got, Z?
Given his proifle as a two-sport star I fiugured he’d be an above slot guy, but he signed really fast which would be odd if it was significantly above slot.

Must’ve liked baseball over football more than had been speculated.
