OT: Mexican Food

This comes from a subthread started in the GDT yesterday (before the game) as well as me thinking about it/the fact that it has come up multiple times before now in other threads

Star-divide

Anyway, what is everyone's favorite Mexican food recipe? (hell favorite Mexican eatery would probably work too) -- this may be part of an ongoing series based depending on the responses

I meant to start this before I left for work this AM and include some recipes but sadly they are at home -- will add them tonight...

Favorite Mexican Recipe...

Go to Joe T. Garcia’s and do the following:

2 Margarita’s (Rocks, no salt)
Chips, salsa and queso
2 Margarita’s (Rocks, no salt)
Combo Fajitas (with a side of jalapeno relish)
2 Margarita’s (Rocks, no salt)

Yup.

For those in Austin...

Go to Baby A’s, skip the food and just have Margaritas frozen, fruity flavor if you prefer) Limit 3.

And then for the food part of dinner, go to Trudy’s

Those have developed quite the reputation

I’ve only been once, but my friend got hammered off of just 2 purple margaritas, then puked later that night….all over 6th street.

Mexican food in Austin

there is a place on the east side of Austin I think on E12th called Tipico that is a pretty good place also. Had forgotten that joint. Sits back on the property south side of the street.

I soloed in the Mile High Club!

Best Interior Mexican in Austin (and the whole US)

is found at Fonda San Miguel. You’ll drop some coin, but it’s money well spent.

Or you can drink purple margaritas and puke on 6th St……YAY! OMG! LOL!

Fonda San Miguel

Remember, Austin has so many great Mexican places that “best” ends up being mainly a matter of personal taste. But Fonda San Miguel is definitely right there at the top. For enchiladas in the Tex-Mex tradition, try Enchiladas Y Mas on Anderson — it’s the legacy of the great Jorge Arredondo.

Favorite Recipie

1. Prepare a wallet full of $20.
2. Drive to Mexican Inn.
3. Eat way too many of those frito chip type things they give you.
4. Pay the waiter/waitress at the end of the meal.

Done.

Cuquitas on Henderson.

Authentic, you might have to brush up on your Spanish to order. Two different salsas, great tortillas(musts in any Mexican restaurant).

They’re open late, great after a night of drinking. Mariachi band adds to the ambience.

I’ll get back later w/ some recipes.

used to be this placed called Beto’s in west tulsa on southwest blvd. they are shut down.

now it’s gotta by Mariscos de Centenario. i don’t eat the seafood though. my fav dish is bistec de mexican (or something like that).

as far as recipe, i make a decent vegetarian fajita. nothing scientific…tomatoes, onions, garlic, pablano pepper, jalepeno, muchroom, cilatantro, cumin, chili powder, salt and some little goya flavor packet thing (name escapes me). nothing exact, just flavor to taste.

Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan was on the same pitching staff with Danny Darwin during the 1986 through 1988 seasons. Both were described by Milo Hamilton as "tall, tough Texans." It was a source of debate amongst Astros players and fans over who would win in a fight, Ryan or Darwin. Though Astros pitcher Bob Knepper attempted to set up a fight between the two during spring training in 1988, manager Hal Lanier stopped it before it could commence. Many experts, including Astros shortstop Rafael Ramirez, felt that Darwin would win because he "looked like someone no man would want to mess with."

Goin to BPiA Mexican food:

(these are locations that are so close and good that its worth a stop on the way)

Marquez Bakery: you can stop & grab 3 tacos or burritos or whatever its all good and bring them into the game and eat’m instead of $5 hotdogs and every1 around you thinks your jesus reincarnated

Los Jalesciences: This place has like 5+ restaurants in austin so you know its good. Its east of 6 flags mall inside a hotel on the north side of the road, arlington/GP border. cant miss it. if tex mex is your style, they got it. if traditional mexican food is more your angle they got it. get the #3. some beers and roll to the game

Go get some quality shrimp with perhaps pico or some sort of herbal flavor kick.

Select the cheese of your choice, tortillas from Luna’s and go to town.

If necessary, apply fajita seasoning.

Corner of I 30 and I 35. It’s a normal – if huge – gas station, but with the most awesomest tacos ever. Cheap, too. As a bonus, during certain hours they also offer breakfast tacos.

I guess I should wait for the “burger” thread for this question, but we might as well just have a catch-all food thread.

I was reading reviews on yelp.com and came across a place called Wingfield’s on Beckley. Can anyone attest?

La Familia in Fort Worth is great

Fantastic former hole in the wall just off 7th Street. Used to be in an old Burger King that still looked like the Burger King. Nicer digs now. I’m a big fan.

The owner Al Cavazos(?) shakes everyone’s hand that comes in, will come sit at your table to chat (if you are amenable to it), have you try random new recipes he’s working on, etc.. Very fresh ingredients and familial.

Otherwise:

Mexican breakfast: Esperanza’s in North Side Fort Worth
Dallas Mexican: Blue Goose is a local staple. Chuy’s is still a great Austin export.
Best fish tacos: Fuzzy’s next to TCU.

Mario & Alberto’s by I-635 & the tollway, across the highway from Valley View mall. I love their chicken nachos. My other two:
Casa Navarro at Forest & Marsh. Good menudo.
I can’t think of the other place; it was down around Royal & Webb Chapel. Great sauces. Any guesses?

tamales

ive never had them at a mexican (or any other) place — grew up on the home made ones (there was a hispanic lady who sold them door to door at a lot of places around where i grew up for years – were talking nearly 10 here) and have been scared to try any others ever since lol

Pulidos

started off as a tamale stand for the rail workers at the Fort Worth rail yard, and so it really is just a mexican restaurant based entirely on their tamales. I will agree that most typical mexican places, the tamales that just happen to be on the menu tend to be bad, since they are usually made once a month and are sitting frozen in the back.

But as with any childhood food, you may never be able to find any that compete.

"I saw your act, just didn't make it for me. Just a lot of fluff."

by scoop16 on Jun 25, 2009 1:55 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

well it's a long process...

I make my chicken stock from scratch. Put the chicken pieces in a large pot of water with celery, carrots, spices, onions, bay leaves etc.. your standard stock ingredients…after that has simmered for a couple hours..

I then begin browning my rice in a skillet with olive oil, add in chopped bell pepper and onions and then some minced garlic. At that point I put in my chicken stock, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, and cumin and chicken pieces. I let it simmer til the rice is ready and all the liquid has evaporated. It is really really good. The Mexican guys who work in my building beg me to make it all the time.

Of course I make some fresh guacamole with it and make a burrito with cheese, guac and sour cream, oh yeh and the pinto beans with bacon, cilantro, chili powder and the best bacon u can find…mmmm soo good…. with a patron margarita with salt… whalla a Mexican food fantasy is born!

My old boss was from W. Va.

He grew up very, very poor. The guy was kind of an ass but I had lots of respect for him because he legitimately made something out of himself. From going from the son of a widowed coal miner to a guy making half a million a year, that’s pretty good.

In the 70’s he was also in the USN. Submariner. Talking to him about that shit was pretty interesting. I was on Netflix at the time and rented him Das Boot because I thought he’d appreciate it, but the son of a bitch never gave it back. He was also in the Marines at one point.

Anyway the man was a lot of things but stupid sure wasn’t one of them. Before that I had a lower opinion of W VA people than I do OK people!

by Black Francis on Jun 25, 2009 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I didn't call them

stupid or anything. Just brought up the accent and that people in VA make fun of them relentlessly. Like Aggie-UT Jokes, only with Va-WVa people.

I actually did date a guy from WVa while I lived in VA, he was from Wheeling, which is just over the border from Pittsburgh. No accent at all, which was refreshing. But good lawd, my neighbors had an accent so thick I just couldn’t understand a damn thing they were saying.

for DFW / Austin, Houston

one of my favorites is Chuy’s. Chips and salsa come as the appetizer…ask for a cup of “creamy jalapeno”. Get the Chuychanga with creamy jalapeno on top. Creamy jalapeno is not on the menu…so you’ll have to ask. There is even a Facebook group dedicated to it. :)

Sprinkle margaritas and cervezas throughout.

Chuy's

I go there pretty much every time I’m in Austin- I love their blue corn tomatillo chicken enchiladas.

Where’s one here in DFW? I thought they all closed in this area.

I also like Blue Goose, Herrera’s (Carrollton), El Fenix, Cristina’s, and Pulido’s. I miss Ninfa’s- they had a great green salsa. I went there with a friend of mine years back on the way to Mayfest. We got completely hammered on those purple swirl margaritas. Good times.

Joe T's got old real fast

If you first come to Ft. Worth, its like the best Mexican place. Then you find other places (like Uncle Julio’s or Fuzzy’s) around it and thus you change your mind about Joe T’s

I really do think that Joe T’s is overrated due to the sorority girl factor, cause everyone of them goes there just to get drunk off of the margaritas

Papasito's if we're talking chains.

There’s this place called Fernando’s at Midway and NW HWY in Dallas. Fantastic chips — easily noticeable that they are homemade. Three different salsas on the spread — all equally good (a devastating combo).

Oh, their actual food is good, too.

Funny thing about Pappasito's and Uncle Julios

I have worked in the Pappa’s restaurants over the past couple of years (not in Sito’s though), and before you can actually work there in any of their restaurants, you have to sign an agreement that states that you will not quit/get fired then take all of their food secrets and such and go open a new restaurant with them. Now, this is common for restaurants to do, but there’s a different story here.

In the Pappa’s restaurant urban myth, it is believed that one of the former cooks was fired for some reason, so to get back at them he sold the secrets of Sito’s to the guy that opened up the first Uncle Julios in Dallas for a nice profit. Julio’s thus became very popular, and thus Sito’s had to change a lot of their menu to actually compete with them….

Take it for what its worth

Somewhat

The BBQ in Dallas is actually somewhat new (and its good. Still no Ruby’s IMO), but the one in Houston has been open for a while.

I actually did work at the Pappadeauxs in Dallas (the one at 35E and Loop 12) for a while during last summer. It was a tough job and god I hated that damn bowtie. Btw, little hint, most of the Deauxs hate it when people order boiled crawfish cause we never have any in the back. That was the one item they tried to actually get us to downsell the whole time

I've actually met one of the brothers

Came into Pappa’s Burger (the first place I worked for them) here in Ft. Worth when it was first opening. I couldn’t tell you which one it was but yeah, they did have that doucheness to them. I still remember our GM freaking out trying to make sure everything was prefect, cause apparently one GM in Houston got fired cause his restaurant wasn’t in prefect condition. The guy walked around our restaurant all day, never talked to any of the staff, and would only voice concern to the GM. Oh god I hated it. What was killer that one of my friends who worked their actually had to wait on him. I’ve never seen someone sh*t their pants so soon when they saw him sit down in their section.

Also, one of the brother’s sons actually came to the restaurant to help open the place, and he was just as bad. Like, Mark Teixerira doucheness bad. It was like he was just counting down the days until he became a GM. I hated that guy so much. And the sad thing is is that he was like 26 or 27 and hes up front hitting on the 17 18 year old girls. Sad really….

Yah, they generally left the wait staff and cooks alone

That way it was easier to focus on guiding their tiny little dicks straight up management’s ass.

Not sure why, but it was clearly a planned endeavour, and one that was oblivious to any particular store’s strong suits and/or shortcomings.

the worst place

in tulsa is Casa Bonita

I think you have to ask for the bean soup now (appetizer), chips/salsa, 13A (cheese enchiladas), Mexican beer (Sol, Pacifico, Negra Modelo, whatever…).

Enchiladas Montadas

De seed and de stem a bag of dried red peppers. Chile de arbol, California chile, and Ancho chile are 3 types, from mildest to hottest.

Boil those bad boys about 5 minutes. Place them in a blender with garlic, cumin, salt pepper and cilantro. Blend the crap out of it. Force it through a fine strainer. Keep the fantastic smelling concotion warm.

Take some corn tortillas. Drop them one at a time in a pan of hot vegetable oil. Flip them and remove. No more than 5 seconds on each side, and that much time isn’t even needed.

Build a stack with tortilla, sauce, onion, cheese and repeat until you’ve made Dagwood proud. On the top add a fried egg. Enjoy!

Ah, the Mexican food in Texas

I love how probably 50 restaurants are listed there, everyone has their own favorite. It’s like BBQ places, but even more so.

In San Diego, the taco shops absolutely rock – giant burrito for $4, always taste a million times fresher and better than the garbage Chipotle makes. But you can’t find a good “sit down” Mexican restaurant to save your life. The type where you get a beer or a margarita and munch on your chips and salsa while you wait. There are just a bunch of tourist trap places where mariachi bands are angling for tips from the Sea World crowd. I miss all these places y’all are talking about.

Speaking of Chipotle

can i just say how much that word sends me over the edge. It is everywhere, even the restaurant chain and I refuse to eat there. Chipotle burritos might taste like pumpkin pie but I’ll never know because I ain’t gonna set foot in the motherf***er.

People act like this is some new revelation in flavor, but a chipotle is nothing but a smoked jalapeno, people. They’ve been around for years. And don’t get me started with the people who mispronounce it. Oh, and now they are so commercialized that some food producers are using smoke FLAVORING instead of actually smoking the peppers, which is lazy and disgusting.

I have about 5 taco shops within a mile of my house, but it isn’t too far away (Point Loma, right?)

You’re a better man than I, being able to eat only half of one of those burritos. I always think about it, then I eat the whole thing.

Very good spot, close to all that's worth being close to

The trick is to cut it in half immediately and then put the other half in the frig poste haste. Then again, I have been such a lazy fat slob the past couple of years, I’d prolly wolf the whole dog down now, too.

There was a place down in Seaport Village that used to do the most dopeass shrimp tacos w/ this sublime ancho chile cream sauce, can’t recall the name, but man, it was worth triple what they were charging. The only thing that sucked was the agro pigeons crowding the personal space. Fucking jagoff birds.

You don’t know that place, do you?

carne guisada

often confused with “asada” in discussion. its mexican beef stew. i make it at home and eat it with flour tortillas or chips. usually its served over something else, like tamales. eitherway, freaking awesome and easy to make at home…

Does anyone else here

love carnitas? Probably my favorite Mexican food. Piping hot, shredded in flour tortillas with slices of avocado and cilantro.

not my favorite but very good.

Something I like to mix in between tortilla soups, chimichangas, flautas and fajitas

carnitas are probably the safest out of town, never been to this restaurant safe order

they had badass carnitas in Utah at traditional places (like the ones that used to be on division before Jerry destroyed the culture there for Jonas Bros. concerts.

In Austin

I’ve never understood the fascination with Chuy’s, I’ve always thought it’s waaayy overrated. I think Matt’s El Rancho is the best tex-mex in town. Trudy’s stuffed avocado is really good. Manuel’s is also great, but its a different style mexican. Z Tejas has some amazing seafood enchiladas

used to be a hotspot in Lubbock by that name

Mexican food that was okay, but a great place for local live bands. It was a hotspot for restaurant/bar employees after hours, the place was out of the way and he would keep the liquor flowing and the bands playing until well past 2 o’clock.

Must be the same guy, can’t imagine that a couple of different people would come up with that same name.

Mariano's

They treat you like family and feed you like you just came off a hunger strike. Not a single bad thing on a pretty long menu.

El Rancho Grande is a great choice (near north side Fort Worth). Very good food, enjoyable place.

If that's a reply to the Mariano's choice (?)

Butt Lightning is amazing. All you have to do is eat a couple of whole habaneros, a bowl of cole slaw, a plate of beans, drink some Shiner Bock, chase it with a banana, and sit in the smoking section. Pretty soon a loose flying ember will set it all off. Caution – be sure there are no small children directly behind you.

Benito’s in Ft. Worth is really good. We used to go there all the time after softball games at gateway park.

There’s a place in Denton called El Ranchito or Mi Ranchito or something that I tried a few weeks ago and it was excellent, really affordable but still great food.

Estella’s on arkansas in arlington is also really tasty. Some of the best tortillas I have ever had.

x

my wife and I really enjoy Benito’s. Back years ago when my 27 year old daughter was about 1, we had her with us there and naturally she started to cry. One of the girls in the kitchen came out and carried her around and got her to quit crying so we could continue to eat. Everyone in the restaurant was relieved, I am sure. Anyway, I decided then and there I would support that restaurant as long as they are in business.

Echo Estella’s. Good place.

yeah...I was being a bit facetious about it being my favorite "mexican food"

but I seriously love the crap outta that place. In fact, I’ve been doing pretty well with the fruits/veggies/whole grains, etc etc this week, so I think i’m gonna treat myself to a bit of Pancho’s takeout for lunch. Although I’ve noticed the one in OKC tastes a bit different than the ones in DFW.

If you are in New Mexico

Still a classic with great food and wonderful atmosphere – La Posta in Old Messcilla at Las Cruces. Around here I really like Frescos but not sure if it’s a chain or not. At Frescos its all good, if you have the encilladas try it with the verde sauce but you’ll have to ask for it.

You know when Panchos started a long long time ago it was actually pretty good.

It tends to be a hit or miss place a lot more than other restaurants. I’ve always had good experiences there but most of the time I hear people don’t like it. It’s all gravy.

What about Maria's Tacos in Austin

on South Congress (or Lamar?)

Was featured on Diners, DIves, and Drive-Ins so when we were in Austin last time we decided to check it out.

They were pretty good tacos, had a great green salsa that the owner makes. I hear their enchiladas are good, but it was too early for those.

Oh, and me and the family unit are about to take it to Fuzzy’s.

Fuzzy's

the day the wife and I tried Fuzzy’s on Berry St., the tacos were so soaked in vinegar that we walked leaving the mostly un-eaten tacos on the table. We made a solemn vow to never eat there again.
