Nooch and Moreland slowly working their way up.
Nam and De Los Santos can’t be far behind.
Jamey, you’re pushing your luck w/ Fin. I hope you keep a thesaurus handy, and have Seasons 1 & 2 of ‘Yo Momma’ on DVD.

Robbie Ross
No place to put him, but he deserves a top 20 spot.

wait and see how high he climbs in our summer rankings. We love the guys who are hot right now.

Like a lot of the arguments these weekly lists bring up, it depends on exactly what these ranking are attempting to quantify.
If this is a true value rankings of our prospects, then, yah. Absolutely he should be. He’s one of our 20 “best” and most valuable prospects right now and I don’t see how that’s really a question.
But if this exercise is an amalgam of hot sheet/prospect value like I believe you’ve said it is (and correct me if I’m wrong here), then having Ross on the watch list is perfectly fine.

Couple of things
1) Honestly, with Smoak, one has to believe that the only way we trade him is for an Ace (Roy Halladay). First off, who do you all think is an acceptable return if we were to part with Smoak, and secondly, if Smoak is staying, its probably going to mean one of Davis or Ramirez that goes. Who would ya rather see stay here?
2) Some of the Hickory pitchers. Since there is somewhat of a logjam of starters there, what is the accpectable order in which who gets promoted first? Do we keep Perez there all year?
3) Beaven. Stud. Has to be in the Top 100 prospects this year.
4) How far does Main fall in our Mid-Season Prospect Rankings due to his Mono?
5) Finally, a question for Jamey. Do you foresee any of our Latin American signings that are going to happen in the next couple of weeks possibly breaking into your top 20 or 30?

Yeah
1. Short of a Halladay/Greinke return, moving Smoak makes little sense, particularly given the problems that have developed with this lineup. Davis vs. Max — keep CD.
2. I’d be surprised if any of the Dads starters get promoted.
3. Yep.
4. Guess that’s an LSB question, not one for me.
5. Oh, the other four weren’t for me. Sorry. Answer: Doubt it. But maybe in the off-season list.

For a while I thought
you might be able to just promote the tandem act of Brigham/Perez to BAK and continue with the pairing – keep their innings down while increasing the challenge. Lately, tho, Brig hasn’t been to hot.
How about Perez goes up and tandems with Gomez. KG’s nearly up to his 2008 IP totals already.
by shroomer on Jun 26, 2009 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Im more and more leaning toward Felizing Perez
Not until next year but instead of going to High A, if he keeps this level of performance up just skip him straight to Frisco

Thats what I see
I really don’t think there is a reason for Perez to be going to High A. Let him stay in Hickory for the rest of the year, giving him more innings closer to the end of the season, then just move him to Frisco next year. I really don’t think there’s anything at High A that Perez needs to work on

1. I wouldn’t trade Smoak unless it was for someone extremely good and controllable. His approach and the type of hitter he is is just to valuable to this offense’s future, IMO. It needs an anchor, and he looks like it – I think he might actually be worth more to us than any possible trading partner in the long run.
2. I’ll leave this one to the guys like Dirkatron and Goyo.
3. At this point I think he might be our third-best SP prospect right now, after Feliz and Perez. Well, until Purke and Schepps officially sign that is.
4. Where I’m concerned, his mono probably makes me inclined to drop him fewer spots than if he had just been plain underperforming for no apparent reason other than suck.
Get on base or die, Salty.

As far as question 1
luckily you don’t have to make that decision any time soon. Between Davis and Ramirez’s struggles it would be a hard choice.
If they both revert to previous norms, I tend to think I’d rather have Ramirez. Better K/BB ratio in the minors, although Davis has shown much better power. I have more faith in Rudy increasing Max’s power than I do in Rudy increasing Davis’ Patience.
Additionally, I think you have to consider that CD is a Boras client, so there is a good chance you basicly just have him through the arb years. That isn’t a huge consideration now, but by next year, when you probably have to make the decision, it will loom a little larger.

I forgot to add
I assume also there is some chance of Max staying at the C position. With all the updates on his hitting, I haven’t heard how his catching is coming lately. Certainly Salty and Teagarden aren’t doing much to rule out Max as the long term Catcher. They are both looking like good catch and throw catchers who can’t hit, who are reasonably easy to obtain.

How much of a chance do you think there is, though?
With the organization valuing defense and pitching to the level that it does now, I just can’t see them rolling with a Victor Martinez or Mike Piazza-type defender behind the plate. I’ve heard that MaxRam is capable of becoming tolerable behind the plate when you factor in his bat (like Piazza and V-Mart), but I think it’s doubtful that he becomes a Salty/Teagarden-type defender back there.
I think the club probably values his as a trade chip (as a catcher) or as an internal DH option more than they do as an internal catching option. And considering Davis, Smoak, and Moreland, I wonder how much they value him as an internal DH option right now.

on where Max is as a catcher. I really haven’t heard much in the way of whether he is improving at all defensively.

As much as I can’t wait to see Smoak in a Rangers uniform, you need to pull the trigger on that trade if it’s 1 for 1. I don’t think you’d be able to squeeze more out of them since Clay has been awesome this year.

I don't know
Sox are clearly pitching rich, need a long-term answer for a 1b as well as big bat, and Smoak is pretty much the best 1b prospect going, right? Sure seems like an even trade to me.
I may agree w/ the above poster that said Smoak may have as much value to this team as anybody.
by Sherman McCoy on Jun 26, 2009 4:46 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Why people keep saying the Red Sox are a trading partner for a first baseman (Blalock or Smoak) is beyond me. Like AJM (I think) mentioned the other day, even if the Red Sox were picking up a 1Bman to then flip why wouldn’t the Sox just take out the Rangers as the middle man and do the trade they want directly?
Remember Red, hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies.
by WyoRanger on Jun 26, 2009 8:35 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
My second thought
There’s just so much pitching rising, and far fewer position guys. That makes it a bad idea, unless the team is suddenly really confident in Max.
That said, Smoak is probably the only guy who pries Buchholz away, in this entire system.

A lot of scouts are still very high on him
Due to his starts at the end last year in Clinton and his performance at FIL. Many believe at FIL he was one of the top pitchers there. Even with a couple of bad starts this year (and if it is rumored that mono took much out of him during these starts), people will still be high on him.

I've vaulted him up quite a few spots after his struggles with mono came to light.
It’s honestly the best possible thing we could’ve heard.
There needed to be a reason for all the suck this year, and it needed to be something that wasn’t career threatening (ie, TJ Surgery or something like that).
Mono absolutely sucks and it has crushed much of this season for him, but it’s also the kind of thing that, once you’re recovered from it, you’re recovered from it. There shouldn’t be any long lasting effects from this like there would be from an arm injury.

Here's what Keith Law said bout him in March
Kiker’s best attribute is his aggressiveness on the mound: He works extremely quickly and attacks hitters with stuff that is more above-average than plus. His fastball is 88-91 mph with a little sink, but not enough to make him a ground ball pitcher. His mid-70s curve has a short downward break while his changeup has a hard fade away from right-handed hitters. With plus command, that’s good enough stuff for him to be a starter in the majors, although the lack of a pure out pitch could lead him to the bullpen.
Sounds to me like a back of the rotation starter
